Alas the little lady is sick today, so am home with her. Took the opportunity to snap a couple more pics. I spent about three hours cleaning it on Sunday, and I'm not even 10% of the way there, hah. Booked in for a warrent on Friday. Probably less of a warrent, more of a plan of what to sort. I've replaced the blown bulbs and everything seems to be working. I'll have a diddle with the drivers side seatbelt as its pretty slow to retract and hard to buckle. I'm hoping the low, the exhaust and the wheels wont cause me any issues. The place I'm taking it to purports to be a mitsy / evo specialist, so hopefully they'll like it.
Once the other half is home to take over care of wee miss I'll shoot into pick-a-part and get a couple of things. Needs windscreen squirters. One of the trims that goes up the side of the windscreen and over the roof flew off on the motorway, so will see if there is a tidy pair of those there, and if its possible to get them off without fucking them too badly...
Need to pull the tape 'eyelids' off the headlights too, but I think I'll just get another set, give them a polish and chuck them in. It's _weird_ having a car you can just buy parts for easily.
The interior is pretty nice really. Would have had the tan leather from factory, but has had black carpets put in which I quite like. When the manual was put in it the cluster was swapped aswell, so it's a pretty seamless conversion, no sign that it was an auto basically.
The headunit is super dated and wont talk to my phone, so I'll replace that at some stage. I've been wanting to play with a double din android based one, so will likely head that route.
Apparently its a thing to swap to evo flywheels and clutches in these? I wonder if its just a parts availability thing. Its got a heavy duty evo clutch in it apparently, and it certainly feels like it on your leg. Getting the muscle memory in place to drive it smoothly and efficiently is taking a bit of time, as the turbo's respond so quickly you're in boost before you know it. I suppose that's a good thing though. They're tiny TD03's... With some larger internals fitted to them I bet they would go really well. Not going down that path though!
The FMIC kit looks pretty decent really. Nice welding on the BOV flange. I suspect the BOV causes a couple of issues though, venting to atmosphere on an air flow metered car is a bit of a no-no.
Fun Fun.
That engine bay just gives me excitement for a degrease and water blast
can confirm satisfaction levels are high when finished doing it.
also paint looks in good condition for its age. someone must of cared for it at some point

Na on the starlet the chassis rails stop around the front seats, we have put a minor one in above the muffler, but nothing major. It has a cage which helps with strength.
Have no intention of changing the fan at the moment as i've had no issues with it mounted the way it is (they are on foam), also will be ducting through bonnet so don't want to put a shroud on it as it will restrict air flow, it's hardly every used so doesn't need to be that efficient, and with EWP should have even less use. Been running fine so in the if it hasn't broken don't touch it camp!
Yep new front sway bar still needs to go on, just being measured up now, along with driveshaft.
True true
If using the factory sway bar D bush location were you going to strengthen those two corners?
as after un stitching front chassis rail under radiator and sway bar mounts on my own starlet i have found they are not exactly that rigid in that area. but also might not be much of an issue in how the car handles and moves

Remember this is tomorrow night people!
Old car or not does not matter its all about getting fellow OS members together for shit yarns and a burger

Wow this thing is coming along quick helps when you get an all round skilled person to do the job.
so now currently running full chassis rails? hard to tell with the photo.
also i guess your not going to keep your radiator cooling fan mounted that way also? As they damage the core and eventually leak with those clips its best with a good shroud to mount the fan too.
also going to run a front swaybar still?

these are cool cars.
having done a engine rebuild on a 4 cylinder one years ago then driving it i was blown away how nice of a car it was to drive.
definitely don't think it was a bad buy by all means maybe just the daily part.
how many ks on this bad boy?

what did you end up doing with this?
ive used crc glass stuff and the tru grit nz made stuff
if need be your welcome to come and see if you can get the scratches off ive got a buffer and the glass stuff.
have done this process on a few of my cars now and has worked well. just cant get the deep scratches out
-
you will probably get away with stock shocks.
otherwise can get the front ones shorten to suit if need be.
but rears wouldn't be too pricey if you needed too

Wednesday 17th JUNE
Save the date
third Wednesday of every month
the, "i just happen to be driving an older but legal* motor vehicle and like burgers once a month or so, we happened to find a park up here, and it seems other people with cars that just also happen to be older instead of newer coincidentally did too" meet?
Someone might feel like a burger at around 7pm to 7:30pm
A chance to catch up with fellow people who happen to be driving a older car, talk with people you may or may not have met before and get your mouth filled with meat.
Or not meat if you're that way inclined.
Burgerfuel, Mexicali Fresh, Ajadz, Subway, D
theres a few car parks in the area and plenty of side roads,
See map for the location of burgerfuel. And there might be a convenient car park in the picture
First time you happened to be driving a old car and happened to park up here to get a burger?
people driving old cars might show up between 7:00pm and 8pm-ish.
MOST OF THESE ARE COMMON SENSE. WE WILL PROVIDE A FEW GENTLE REMINDERS WITH THE NEW RULES BUT REPEAT OFFENDERS MAY BE ASKED TO LEAVE.
RULES AND THE BORING STUFF!!
Basically these are in place so we have a fun and friendly meet and leave the carpark clean and tidy like we were never there.
- Take your rubbish away with you or put it in a bin, Use the public bins downstairs not the private ones belonging to the business up top.
- Smokers please don't dispose of your butts on the ground!
- Please limit the ALCOHOL consumption. Its a public place and the Police/security regularly stop in and we don't want want anyone getting in trouble, We also don't want people leaving empties around.
- You are welcome to invite mates, but please note you are 100% responsible for your and their behaviour.
- NO Skids or Reckless/Dangerous driving
- Park in a proper carpark! If its full then just use a bit of common sense and try not to park too many people in.
- Don’t make excessive noise / rev engines, idle for extended periods in surrounding streets
- dont be a dick
what a coincidence people decided to drive old cars and have burgers on this night right?

I don't have anything oldschool that actually drives ( legally drives ) TE31 being panel beated and painted, AE86 can't drive more than 20kph or bonnet flies up haha, carina has a stuck clutch.
Got a porsche that can come in, am I allowed to park downstairs or something like it was few years ago hahah
That's the standard OS car life mate
The porsche does sound somewhat interesting though.. should bring it
although the real issue here is getting bums on seats to listen to shit Barry sharns while mildly enjoying a burger
let alone getting an OS car to a burger meet

Would anyone on here be interested in my FC?
Wanting $35k ONO with all the spares, the Regas & the drag bags + front runners.
465kw at the wheels on 26 psi.
13B Semi PP, Projay intake, Link G4+ Extreme, Borg Warner 472SXE, microtech dash.
TKO 600 syncro box.
NZDRA spec cage, tech'd to run 9.90 or slower.
Racetech seats, Driver & passenger 5 point camlock harnesses
Heaps more.
Runs 10.1 down Meremere and would go faster with stronger axles or a faceplated TKO.
Block's out for a freshen up atm - new side and corner seals & all new springs, I'm cleaning it down Friday and will be reassembled in the next few weeks.
Reg on hold.
Will be put up on trademe in the near future.
Will be sad to see it go, have owned for 5 years and had a heap of fun in it.
PM me if interested.
I personally think your price is too low
A steal and will sell asap at that price.
A standard s5 that is tidy is listed for 30k which may be on the high side but a nice car
and another listed for 38k with way less power and mods
and a fd for 50k with also less power and mods
start high and go down from there?

Also between doing the engine stuff some small stuff got done on the car itself
tried pulling the steering wheel off but still can't left a puller on it over a few nights plus crc and heat pretty much just ended up stripping the threads in the wheel.
removed the seats and put some fabric paint on them.
Three coats later
and back seat
then removed the door cards and inside door handles and painted them \
some previous owner had recovered the interior stuff and has done a half ass job. much like the rest of the cars previous work
so im just painting bits as its the best bang for buck.
then masked and painted
and decided to keep part of the orange to break it up a bit.
good enough for this ruff old car
done 3 of the 4 but will do that one at some stage
then removed the front drivers quarter window mechanism and found the back casting part had broken away which caused the gears to get out of mesh.
cleaned the gunk out of the gears and regreased and made a back plate.
now i just need to find a clip to hold the winder on

So after all the motor parts were stripped down and cleaned all the parts were measured to see what was usable or needed.
bored went from standard to 30 thou over due to wear
and main and big end bearings went to 10 thou over due to wear too
so now a rebore and crank grind is to be done.
also measured the crank tunnel and found it needed a line bore too
then after many hours cleaning up the shitty 1950's casing on the block we set to work on some machining
but before we did machine work we had to wait for the parts to arrive from Australia as nothing local
measured new pistons then bored cylinders to suit.
then after all eight were done the cylinders got a hone
then after all cylinders were bored honed and the tunnel borred we surfaced the block
then after that was done the block was cleaned and carefully wrapped and stored until the rest of the rotating assembly was ready.
so removed all of the old rod bushes and pressed in some new ones
then machined the mating surfaces on the rods and rod caps so they are flat.
then after all rods are done the caps are done also
then after all the rod bolts were inspected some of the threads were found to be average so some Arp rod bolts were purchased
then bolted all of the caps to the rods and torqued them. of course keeping the rods and caps carefully matched with each other
then measured the gudgeon pin and honed the rod bushes to suit that way the bush can't seize onto the gudgeon pin
then measuring the big end side of the rods and honing them to suit.
then with the finished product
then the next job was to machine the crank to suit the new bearing size
so once the crank was machined all of the rotating assembly was cleaned and checked then sent away to be balanced as this is a must do when changing pistons or rods as if its not done can cause engine vibrations.
so while i was waiting for the rotating assembly to come back from balancing we did some work on the cylinder heads.
pretty much same protocol as the block
strip and clean then cleaned up the castings and tickled up the ports a little bit
then the heads had new valve seat inserts and valve guide insets. and a new set of intake and exhaust valves
and new valve springs and keepers.
then we machined the exhaust and head facing so they are flat.
then cleaned heads and lapped the valves in
then once they were lapped in we checked the spring heights and machined some off the top of the valves to get the correct and even spring height
then once the spring heights were correct the head was stripped again cleaned then reassemble with valve stem seals.
so everything on the heads have been replaced apart from the casting itself.
then wrapped them up until they are ready to be fitted.

The OCD in me thinks the alternator pulley fan and nut and washer should get zinc plated like the factory
you can thank me later.
plus the fan looks like its bare steel so will rust in no time
