  3. so as you know if you have read this topic this year i swapped the original motor out (because it was starting smoke real BAD!!) i put the one that came in the parts car i bought in after swapping all the shit from mine onto it......and all was good with the world...it started ,ran well, and didn't smoke..... this one and then one day on my way home from work it started rattling ....and it didn't go away.....and it started bleeding oil all over everywhere i parked.....(at this point i knew J-W-G was selling his 2.0 out of his mk3) so thought i would try and fix/fuck mine https://youtu.be/BaPxkhkxBoE 2 things happened that night ...1 i didnt fix/fuck it....2 it sounded better and the rattling when a away........................................for 9 hours. so i bought J-W-Gs motor and he kindly dropped it off for me on the Saturday....i didn't do anything with it till the flowing Monday... Drove the old girl to work and it was getting worse so came home and pulled the motor out swapped the flywheel ,p-plate,clutch ,inlet and carb onto the motor(3rd this year) i got from Jesseas i know they worked well on past 2 motors (and against my better judgment not the water pump or thermostat) ....put it all back together and it ran like a dream fried straight up and didn't sound like a diesel...after a couple of days it did pick up a slight knocking sound (that when away when the clutch pedal is even lightly pushed (so wasn't to bothered )..and had a massive hesitation when you put your foot down.(found that to be coil to dizzy HT lead........the hard way......heeeelll of a jolt). then this monday i left to go to work and got a few ks from home and temp was well over half way(normally the fan is just kicking in as i get to work )...it was a hot ass morning tho. got it back home and it was very low on water.....so i bit the bullet and pulled the motor back out ....replaced the water pump and thermostat from mine......i know....i know. found the knocking to be a stone jammed in the sandwich plate ......before you ask ...fuck knows. i also decided to give it a blast and quick paint...and water last the engine bay and put it back together..... and give the old girl a wash......shes happy as now and back to being 100%. cheers all

  4. Damn i havent updated this in way too long. Long story short, the X-flow dropped its oil on my way to work about a year and a half ago. Bang, rod out the side... Threw in a Pinto, didnt measure the starter throw out and chewed the starter so it sat for a while. Pulled the pinto out and its now living in @d.p.n.s MK5. Few plans for the mean time involving an EFI V6, ITBs, T5 gearbox, and maybe an SC14.... And of course a post isnt good without a photo

  6. Still on daily duties. The datsun club had a meet at Levels in Timaru last weekend and we did a few laps of the track during lunch break. Didnt miss a beat. then on Saturday night I was thinking of excuses to avoid this respray, and essentially had nothing so on Sunday I stripped it and started undrilling the roof. Not too many nasties, really stoked the side rails are mint considering. It has bust out on both front corners, prefect time to slice this out! The new roof skin weighs 8kg. The red one was 15kg. The amount of bog truely is astounding, and I gave it a layer of rhino-liner on the inside to assist in strength.. and a full size piece of dense underlay because I didn’t know if it would drum. Gonna be so good to not have to drag that around! Won’t be running the towbar next time, so minus another 12kg easy. the bootlid is from the old nickM race car, it’s really really fucking tidy. No rust, one small ‘depression’ near the lock, and came with nice bolts and a nicer-than-my-current lock mechanism. Big thanks again to nick for that, the red one had a lot of time, rust repair and bog in it, and wasn’t in nice shape. I have a fair few areas I’m going to re-do but I’m not going to let this drag out. Will be done before the weather cools down again

  10. Also I really appreciate your input team. Im sorry if im coming across as a bit curt or short but I am incredibly fucked off and really angry at not being able to fix this. The radiator guy hasn't has a slot to look at my radiator until now so I'll take that up to him now and hope like fuck that's been the problem. Fuck, I really hope it is because I'm running out of things to try.....

  11. How did you get on with repairing your circuit? I make reproduction circuits for the Falcon range, HK Holden and currently working on Ford Torino. If you can send me your circuit I can work on the reproduction. Here is an example, this if for ZF & ZG Fairlane:

  12. If I use a piece of string and straight line it from the engine cog to the rear sprocket it’s off. Got a new swing arm on the way so I’ll fit that and see how it looks. If it’s all good I’ll strip the paint off it and hit it with the left over black 2k I painted the rest of the frame in.

  16. I have a challenge for you guys. Im look for OEM parts to design around. Starting with Shell bearings and Con Rods. Bearings: Big End. 45mm Diameter. 35mm wide Mains. 60mm diameter 28mm wide Con Rod: 180mm long 45mm bearing (49mm? bearing dependent) 35mm wide Ive found Subi main bearings in the EG33 are 60mm diameter but they dont look wide enough. Old 911 looks close too. Same problem with the big end. Lots of 45mm diameter but not wide enough. The conrod length is super long. Ford Model T or Flathead are 7in which would be fine. But journal diameter is too big. Hoping you guys can help figure out a combo.

  19. Have gone with the 6 bolts, loctite and hope plan Some "precision engineering" care of my angle grinder got the pick up location sorted Not a huge amount of clearance, but enough! Still loving the blaster Used some copper spray on the head insert and some PC thermal compound between it and the head cover and I think it's pretty much time to do some wiring, sort out the exhaust and give it a nang!

  21. Had some pipe left over (it's also splashed in pigs blood from homekill, so it's a pleasure to weld yum yum) A decent little length, looked about BBQ height, so I scrounged up all the rusty scraps that were too good to throw out, and made this rocket stove. Should have cleaned it up better and not welded outside in the wind. But a tidy up and some Potbelly paint should tart it up. Once I've cranked some temperature in it to burn off the galv as I don't want zinc in my food. lower bit is solely for air intake. Might fandangle something up to control it for simmering. Although fuel is probably the best way to control temp.

  22. Ok so had an issue where the rear wheel always sat to the left when bolted up. Thought this was due to a inner wheel collar not being present. Found one and popped that in but still sitting to the left. Good thing is that I can test the wheel on my other Honda. Did that and it sits bang in the middle so it’s not a lacing rim offset issue. I then placed the wheel in its most straightest position I could measuring off the top shock mounts each end of the tyre Seems like it’s the swing arm itself that’s a bit Swiss cheesed, 95% sure it’s not the frame as it’s inside the swing arm that’s sitting funny. Got a new swing arm on order as I cbf’d pulling the swing arm out of my other one. This Honda has been a basket case hahaha! Fitted the Cafe honda’s rear wheel to check if it sat centre. Fits perfectly in the middle, hella flush on the guards.

  24. Bit off topic but this is what narrows down my workspace in the shed, currently used as storage it's my 82 lancer gsl that I've owned since I was 18. It's the car that's waiting for me to get this ute legal so it can have some attention.... Used to have a project thread for it but it's gone these days. Has currently donated some engine parts etc to getting this ute done which is how it has sneaked into this thread

  27. I have finally managed to get most of the shaping/repairs done, a few wavy bits and a couple of dings here and there, sorted now. I was also having some problems with leftovers from the old respray reacting with the primer and wrinkling on the roof. I solved the problem by bare metalling the whole roof and starting again, to be sure there was nothing underneath. All good now. So now it's all painted up in filler primer, ready for blocking. It's looking quite good already, pretty crisp and straight. Bonnet and guards not attached properly here, which is why the alignment of the front end is all off. Not bad for a noob effort, I think. There's a tiny bit of fine tuning needed, shapewise, a couple of things which weren't easily visible until it was all light grey. But in general looking pretty good, will block it back and get it as straight as poss, then time for colour, at long last.

  28. Alrighty, bit of an update lull as it has been way too fucking hot to do anything serious, plus I am broke so cannot fund much stuff that needs to happen. I have been picking away at a a few jobs tho; I added some deck lights. Nothing super bright, but then they don't draw a shit load of amps either. I took it for a stealthy drive down to the weighbridge, it has ended up at 2450kg with a full tank of diesel, not as light as I thought but still lighter than a Safari, pretty happy with that really as the deck is a chunk bit of work. That was the first time at road speed and it feels fucking great. The drive did highlight the need for a bit more airflow to the rad, it was a super hot day but at road speed the fan was still cycling which isn't ideal. Thus I built a pretty serious bit of ducting/shrouding underneath which I don't have a great pic of but which seems to do the trick; This was actually a bit of an effort as I needed it to clear the diff, which meant relocating the brake T block, which meant redoing the front brake lines etc etc. Cool cool. It also got pretty hot in that cab, so I have ordered some heat shield material, I will see how that goes. As an added precaution I created a bit of bodgy HVAC to pull hot air out when things got too much like an oven; This was because I had a 24v 150mm fan that has been in my stash for 10 years - see you should never throw things out but hoard them always. This runs off a bi metallic switch set for some random temperature. I have had a couple of previous comments about my choice of thermofan switch which I chose to cut in at 102deg. I talked to my radiator man about it who said what a cunt I was and that mid 80 degs was where I should be so the cooling system has a bit of headroom to work before boiling. Ok, I am abashed. The cheap easy switches were all M16 thread though and the fitting in the thermostat housing is M12, so I pulled it off and retapped it to suit. This has made the cooling situation feel a bit happier, plus it doesn't get so hot in the cab. This is probably good all round. Being broke and discovering that I had 4x 24v relays from the donor truck I decided to create a trailer plug 24-12v drop down converter; I will get a trailer plug and wire this shit in. There is 12v available at the back of the truck from the dc-dc converter set up for the air pump. Sweet. Lastly there is a leak from the exhaust manifold somewhere, and this will be difficult to sort because of the stupid little adapter I made to go from the OEM manifold to the TD05 inlet. So I drew these up the other day and got them cut. I will purchase some bends when I have some spare casharoonies... Then brace yourselves for some header lovins bitches. Also I made some spares to potentially pay for the cutting, let me know if you need some.... At ease.

  32. Merry xmas people. Got the old man to come down with his truck and bring the pit up to theirs as we were heading up for Christmas, and present it to my brother there. Threw on a bit more paint as it got a little scratched up in transit and gave it a clean out on the inside. My brother was pretty Fucking stoked and all my family were pretty impressed with it so was pretty happy with that. I gave him a hand throughout the day and we got it roaring to burn it out. We created a fire in both the firebox and the cooking chamber as well. Got the firebox up to about 650 Fahrenheit for a bit and the cooking chamber up to about 400 for about 3 hours. Cleaned it out again then sprayed canola oil throughout and got it going via the firebox for another 3hours to season it with a drip tray and primarily Manuka to season it. It seals up pretty well once the exhaust starts extracting but it takes a little while to get it going. We also struggled to get the cooking chamber above 200 Fahrenheit when we seasoned it so we need to learn how to get it going hotter. Will try different brickettes and heat beads as we primarily just used wood when we seasoned it. Pretty stoked nonetheless. Will get some meat on it tomorrow hopefully and see what we can come up with. Cheers

  35. Post eastcape thoughts 150cc kit was pretty nice to have. Just leave it in 3rd gear and use it like a twist and go. Top comfortable speed with loaded panniers is about 90kph. Handling on gravel is noticeably wobblier with panniers on the back. Rear tyre is ok. I would quite like a more aggressive/adv tread for gravel. Not desperate but would be an improvement. Leaving Auckland I lost power for a second on the Bombay's and thought I'd cooked it in the same spot it died last time. Carried on and found it was stumbling at over 8k rpm under a good load. Didn't notice this the week previous but I was going easy on it and had no extra weight. Plug looked like it had some brown spots in it (but was the oil contaminated one from the last rings) as a precaution I bunged in a cooler plug and started using 95 octane fuel. The stumble went away except for a small one very rarely at just under wot under load. I tried 91 again leaving opotiki and the stumble came back. Filled with 95 again and it's gone. So I'm thinking the increased compression from the kit is the cause. Cooler plug looks fine but will try again with a fresh standard. Should add that I never gapped the cooler plug so that may explain the infrequent stumble, wideband shows a bump in richness so I'm thinking the spark is the issue. Riding it today with no weight on it it doesn't happen and bangs out to 110 happily. Current jetting is standard main jet (110) and needle lifted from middle to top. This is the same as it was when the rings went, but wideband says rich and 1000km of loaded riding says it's ok. Guessing garbage rings. Mix is ok at idle and wot. Everything else is rich (high 10s to high 11s). Going to need to fiddle with the emulsion tube I think. Have ordered a new standard one from Ali. Will try that to see how different it is from the original and then start drilling. Exhaust header appears to be two layers so it's smaller than it looks. I'm thinking a new one that's actual size will help the top end. Usb in bike is lush for camp site phone charging. Led bar is lush for when headlight bulb shakes itself off. Stuff for next time? I think I could use some even smaller panniers to carry my "sleep system" which weighs like 1kg all up. If staying at similar places I won't need the stove, just need a zip/kettle at campgrounds. Will take a tarp next time, never got around to getting one this year. Bivy is great no moisture inside but would be miserable getting into in a hail storm, plenty of building at campgrounds to shelter under though Possibly don't need to take a puncture kit. If I don't take that then there's no reason to take levers. Tyres are good cond, just don't be unlucky. Don't need a fuel bottle, always had enough to get to the next pump if I couldn't fill at the nearest one for some reason. Wasn't sure on economy with the 150 kit and loaded, but it's only slight more than before. Potentially shift some weight further forward. I think this would improve gravel handling. I sold my tank bag just before I got the bike - because I won't be needing this for a while.... A pace notes holder would be an ideal addition. Anyway. Got home, changed the oil. It's looking perfect. Oiled the squeaky chain, back into commuting duty
