  1. So this is arriving in my hot little hands in an hour or two, assuming it doesnt blow up and/or my sister does not crash it on the road from picton. I am such a dick, I dont like British cars, and anything not a wagon is stupid, so obviously I have acquired a british saloon. Got it from a mate in AKL who has had it for many years. He only let me have it on the basis that I slam it, so me and sidewaysickness have been planning that out. There will be more pics when it has arrived, but here is a potato quality one from my sister as she left Picton just now. Discussion Thread

  2. Did a bit of tunnel massage today. Usually it's the bellhousing but this R154 is pretty big in the guts. So up she went and bolted onto the factory gearbox mount. I then lifted the engine to clear the sump from the cross member by about 5 mm. This meant I needed a mount to go from the new engine mounts to the subframe that was 30mm. Made a few calls and looked at a few books and ordered from the mount shop a Land Rover engine mount. It's 65mm round with a stud on each side and is 36mm so I'm happy with that. I will now make a plate that makes the subframe mount nice and flat and will drill a hole right where I need it. Most likely slot it vertically as the engine mount is slotted horizontally. That will give me all the adjustment I need. Once that's done the auto sparky is coming around to start the new wiring. Might also have a play with the exhaust headers soon while I'm putting the engine in and out.

  4. Ordered some seat covers from the states and got Greg (64 Valiant) to fit and trim them to the seats. Before in not too bad condition considering. Vinyl was really brittle and hard. After! The lighting isn't great but you get the idea. Make-shift solutions are often the most comfortable... okay maybe not this one. I'm really happy with the colour match. Big ups to Greggles for his work.

  8. So on Sunday I did this to a bit of the hallway floor. It was the only clear spot in the house, so naturally Chris put his shoes there immediately. And then we made a big (temporary, as that wall is to be completely removed shortly) doorway, which has already made the space feel much bigger. All of which was in preparation for yesterday's installation of this wee beasty. Yay, heat!

Came with a big port, i wanted to try a small port.... So i got this. Oh yea got these too... Mate spent shit loads getting all these engine bits and sold them to me for less than half the price he paid.... mates. heres some of the goodies Yuck...... and all the engine together, will be running this setup for a bit until i can afford a decent turbo and manifold. aaaaaaaalso got these! will polish them and sell/swap for 14s i think. unsure of offsets at the moment 14x7.5 14x7 Got my gearbox too, running a j160, making up an adaptor plate at work at the moment. and have a liteace diff too.

  13. Pull plug lead, give it a kick in the guts. If it sparks you're onto a winner. If not, its either turned off, or something else is dicked. Unplug the ignition switch, i believe on bikes of this era (with cdi), when you turn off the key, it grounds out the ignition stopping it from running. So if you unplug ignition, it should run! Its like that for my H1, my GP and my c50

  19. Might I suggest that for that last little triangle section in the rear, you get a little brass plaque made up with your initials or a logo or something on it, polish that up and sit it in there with the rest of the wood finished and varnished or waxed, it would look both fitting and amazing and be a great testament to the amount work you've put in.

  20. So a bit has happened just haven't had time to update. Noticing the V12 engine mount pattern is the same as the 1UZ, so I ordered a set of 1UZ to M series engine mounts from xcessive racing in the states. I measured the differece in V angle between the mounts bolted onto the engine and the subframe (seeing the v12 is a different degree to the 1uz). The differece was 18 degrees, so I got an engineer to bend the mounts out another 18 degrees. Now they are the same as the subframe. I now need a 30mm engine mount I can adapt and that side is sorted. Managed to score a 1UZ Celica with an R154 so figured I would take the R154 out and sell the rest. So now I had a R154 and the 1UZ clutch and flywheel. These bolted straight onto the V12. I figured I might as well save the hassel and splashed out on a R154 to 1GZ bellhousing. So now everything is bolt on. Made some wooden engine mounts as a dummy and sat the engine back in. Tonights mission is dummy everything up and fit the engine box in. According to my tape measure, the factory gearbox mount will bolt to my R154 and the engine will sit in the middle of the engine bay. I would have preferred it to sit back a bit further ,but 25mm isnt going to kill handling or asthetics. Still leaves me plenty for radiator. Have also cleaned up and painted the rocker covers in my traditional wrinkle black. Will try and keep up with updates as is moving pretty fast now.

  21. So... a day off sick(sick in the head maybe). I was bored, and looking at trademe and I stumbled upon a moped that took my fancy. So i brought it It turned out to be a 1959 VéloSoleX 1700 49cc - in completely rust-spec mint condition(rooted) ...christened P.A.M (pedal assisted motorbike) by my wife . . . If that wasnt bad enough, i found two more locally so naturally hit buy now on those too (now im really fu#$ked in the head) original purchase on the right - another 1959 1700 on the left and a very original 1961 2200 model in the middle I set about quickly dismantling a motor and learning the intricacies(breaking) of small 2-stroker motors. After a week of cleaning, honing, part hunting and reassembly - IT WAS ALIVE!! One day i shall have at least one looking awesome and be hooning down to the local patisserie - ordering le baguette and crumbing it all the way home.

  22. Alright, this one perplexes even myself. So i bought that Cefiro that was on here a few months back that wasnt running. Dug around sorted some things out and, it kept popping fuel pump fuses. So i figure pumps toast. Get new gas, throw 15 litres at it, put a new pump in, run pump for a while to purge out the fuel lines, new gas comes out. Hook it up, fires up no problem. Park her up for another sunny day and go back to being a dad for a couple of weeks. Get a spare moment one sunday and go to fire it up, and it will not start, check everything. Pull fuel line off turn car on, no gas comes out. Figure it must be fuse. Look at sure enough. Replace fuse and it blows straight away. So rip out NEW pump and put it on the bench, give it some power and wont turn over. So i decide to dissect this one. Apply power and its just jammed/wont turn, just starts smoking the contacts. However I can freely turn the motor over by hand. The gas in the tank now smells kinda funny too, I think there might be something in the fuel that is vanishing the pumps. Anyone had this before? Anything else I could be overlooking? Want to get to the bottom of it before I pay another $100 and lunch another pump. Thinking, syphen tank, run some ethanol through it, put new gas in with new pump. Thanks,

  24. ANNOUNCEMENT: At Caffeine & Classics this Sunday, there will be a chance to enter a prize draw to participate in a really cool cruise after next month's Caffeine & Classics. This cruise (sponsored by Protecta Insurance) will be to The Hot Rod TV Show studio, where filming will be taking place for an upcoming episode of the show. Lunch will be provided and those that come along will be part of the show. Space at the studio is limited, so this prize draw is being run by random ballot. The good news is that we will be drawing 40 winners (who are welcome to bring passengers). Entry is open to anyone with a Caffeine & Classics vehicle (car or motorcycle) and is available to come on the cruise on the 30th of August - look for the signs this Sunday for more details and to enter the prize draw.

  32. No AFM's in these cars, they run a speed density (MAP and IAT sensor) configuration. Didn't get a chance to test the MAP sensor yesterday, but I have it with me in the uni workshop today, so will see how it compares to the factory specs. I really need to get another probe for my scope, so I can overlay spark events and see how they align with the injector pulses. Looking at it again, those pulses are 50ms in length, and that seems really long for what are supposed to be 550cc (thats 27.5cc's of fuel!) injectors... If it's one injection pulse per ignition event (which I would assume... but you know what they say about assumptions). Looking at those scope pics, there are around 275ms between each injection event start, meaning ~3.6 events per second, or ~218 per minute. There is one combustion event per rotor for each revolution of the eccentric shaft, so this would correspond to the motor rotation at 218rpm during cranking. This sounds about right, leading me to believe it is one injection event per combustion event (sequential). Need my bits from china to show up so I can continue the fun! .

  33. The final sheets of ply have been laid for the flooring substrate, this prompted the need to make some decisions about shower, vanity and toilet choices as the pipe work needs to pass through the corten steel deck. Decided on a fiberglass shower liner rather than something acrylic, it would seem that there are only a few manufacturers of such things left in NZ, after choosing a model the waste location could be marked on the deck and holes cut for drains and water pipes. You will notice that a tyre has conveniently appeared where the drain will be!! Same was done for the vanity waste and pipe work. Time to start framing up the bathroom. Framed up wall, temporary until the shower stall arrives. The rear loft is now enclosed with the access now defined, the idea is that there will be a vertical ladder attached immediately below the opening. Started to run cabling about the place. Being an electrical engineer I couldn't bring myself to pay for new cabling so have decided to recycle. Most of the interior will be 24 volts DC, there will be some 240 Volt AC but only a few power points. All recycled cable will be tested especially its insulation. The next steps will be to line and create the rear loft sleeping area..............

  35. Lack of space in the ute means that my buckets will be pushed as far rearward as possible and left there. I'm not that tall so you'd have to be a fuckin midget to have issues. Do I need to have sliding seat rails or can I just fix them in place like the factory bench was? If my midget wife has to drive it then she can put a cussion behind her.

  37. Oh also...yesterday I built this. Finished in the afternoon. The original steps I had cut into the clay have been getting washed away and were useless after a good rain. I knew they had to go but had been putting off this job. So glad Ive done it now because the difference is vast. Especially as it takes you up to the garden and throught to the track that leads to the toilet rather than taking the long way round towards the cabin. Precious moments saved when one has that morning 'urgency' after a strong coffee. I call it the 'Stairway to Kevin'

  40. Well the voltage regulator regulates the voltage, so if you have excessive voltage then its a good place to start, you need to check the connection to the battery is stable as it is the soak, the load which is the basis of the regulation...

  46. Been doing a lot of debating bubble arches vs non bubble arches recently, partially due to the costs involved, but also I'm liking the thought of staying with some reasonably small rolling stock. Been keeping an eye out for these things in 13x7" but having no luck as they only seem to be sticking to the -19 7.5" jobbies: In other news, I managed to finally complete the dash tidying up. Got a guy off trademe to do the stainless inlay, man that was a pain in the arse. After sending the first one in some flimsy cardboard and it getting bent to all buggery it took a further month to get him to finally send the replacement after bullshitting a lot about getting it done. Shame, because he had some dash pads I was keen on, but I won't be lining up to buy off him again in a hurry. Anyhoo, heres the final result:
