  2. So after many months of looking - including (failed) bidding on sight unseen cars 9 hours away from me, mincing around car yards and looking at more rust than I care to remember - I finally pulled the trigger and purchased one of these fine automobiles. Reasons being: - It was local in Auckland. - The Toyota tax wasn't too extreme. - It was ratty, showing it had been somewhat legitimately repaired. Anyway, what I purchased is a 1985 HJ60 high roof model, not sure which trim level but it has the 'power pack' interior with central locking, power windows and sunroof, A/C, rear passenger heater. It's powered by a 2H 3980cc straight six diesel engine and an H55F 5 speed transmission. It also has a working PTO winch on the huuuuuge front bumper. Initial impressions of the truck is just how big it is, it's massive! Especially compared to my usual modes of transport, the Austin 1300 or Nissan Sentra Sportwagon. The paint is rough but it shows where work has been done. There is filler but it is mostly fresh metal underneath. Looking up the D pillar I can see some rust at the roof seam, I've acid treated this and will address it at some point. There are also a couple of small patches of rust in the rear inner wheel arch and under the rear seat floor. Will apply wax to the body to preserve the patina. Driveline wise the P/O had the engine reconditioned (receipts provided) and the owner prior to me did the cylinder head after the HG blew between no. 2 and 3 pistons. This was caused by the head not being torqued down evenly. The front hubs were also rebuilt by him after a WoF fail on oil leaks. The gearbox is a little noisy, I believe this is the input and/or output shaft bearings. Kits for this are available ex-Australia. Probably caused by towing - it lived in the Waikato towing horse floats for a while. Have not tested the 4wd system properly yet. Anyway, overall I am stoked about my new truck! Diesel and 4wd is all new to me. Planning to daily this if practical. The conveniently most appropriate stickers applied - thanks @Archetype! Also thanks @MichaelJFox for assisting in collecting this tank. Discuss:

  5. 1kz would have to be a winner if it was able to be converted, they go hard in a prado in my experience. For context, this is more or less what I want to achieve; Start with a double cab 4wd Dyna/Atlas, graft landcruiser/safari coil sprung axles onto it, move the rear axle back a bit so you can get a proper sized deck. No crane. Build a cabin for the back that can be jacked up and removed in a jiffy. Then it can be my forever workshop vehicle/bug out machine/camper and I will never need another vehicle in my life. I have spoken to a cert man about it and it needs a 1D class certifier, but it should be straightforward although time consuming.....

  7. More high fill primer on the roof and it's blocked back with much fewer high spots: Door jams and sills sanded to 320 grit, high filled and sanded back: Almost at the stage where I can get some paint on the body, last part is the rear hatch jam? (I guess that's the name) so off came the hatch, very happy with the lack of rust here! Only some minor surface rust, nothing under the seals etc: The rear hatch is a bit warped from having a big wing mounted to it from it's previous life, so I got to the point where I won't worry about it not being a perfect finish there. The semi warp is flattened out when the duck tail wing is mounted anyway. I also started putting together this damaged marquee I got for $40 on Trademe to see if it would work for painting since I don't want paint fumes in the house (garage under bedrooms). It had been in a storm so had some bends but I fixed that. Unfortunately I had to spend hours waterblasting the cover because the storm mud had been left on it and become ingrained.

  8. Long time, no update. I haven't done a thing to this, but I do use it when ever I can. Fixed some potholes and graded the drive today. Been getting ready to do some paving which means lots of base to build up. Why shovel when you can Bulldozer? Hid in the garden. I'll add a choke cable in the future but beyond that all is well.

  9. I bought a Beetle. I had a '66 when I was 16 and I thought I'd got over it but when a mate offered me this messed up but solid beauty for a good price I heard myself say " Yeah, I'll have it". It's a 1200 '62 with later panels, a six point cage, Empi seats, the worst smooth-job ever and terrible paint. Pics.

  10. wat? are you crazy? its the best free ticket to subverting the rules there is. you'd have to be fucked in the head to throw away the free loophole in consent/spatial restrictions/land coverage/height to boundary etc etc just to say you house isnt connected to another one. the jokers who lived in the house next door before the current lady, were moving out and i offered to help them. they had a piano. i asked the lady why she never played it and she said "what do you mean? i played it every day". we never heard a single thing. it might be an issue elsewhere but round these parts sharing a wall is of no determent to the value of your house.

  16. The absolute cheapest option is about $1900AUD, obviously, you'll need a Subaru gearbox (my donor box cost me about $450), about 5hrs labour on top and also fabricate some mounts yourself. But at the end of that, you end up with a stronger box and 5 gears to choose from.

  18. Project update non-update /no pics. Went pick up 7" steels and check out hot 1641, big cam, twin down draft carbs motor. Beetle rod type thing that has the rims on was still on top of my mates office, needs fork-lifting off. Motor was under a pile of crap, same pile of crap that the forklift was under. Tomorrow apparently. *sigh* Two part plan. Part one..... Big steels on, rear arches flared to clear. Fit 1641 motor if it's not fucked. Flat back questionable paint so it looks even more shit. Cruise around like it's 1960's California. Part two..... Tall tyres, bugeye Baja kit, body lift, ridiculous paint job involving metalflake, lace curtains and mucho masking tape. Cruise round like it's 1970's California. Win at Beetles.

  25. @Firetruck is right - as the high pressure pulses expand into the collector/megaphone area they slow down and create a vacuum which helps to draw exhaust gasses out of other cylinders. At the same time there is a sound wave that bounces back in the other direction towards the valve. This is also known as a mindfuck.

  28. Oil pump Perform throttle cable inspection and adjustment. Remove the R, L body cover. With the throttle grip fully open, it is fine if the alignment mark of the oil pump position and the control lever are in agreement or within the range of 1 mm on the throttle opening side. Start the engine, open the throttle grip slightly from the idling state, and confirm that the control lever operates almost at the same time as the engine speed increases. For adjustment, loosen the lock nut of the control cable, and adjust it by turning the adjustment nut. Do not adjust the alignment mark of the control lever to the closing side of the body alignment mark. The discharge amount of the oil decreases and adversely affects the engine. Even if it is adjusted to about 1 mm to the opening side, there is no hindrance to the engine. When the synchronization is bad, the following phenomenon appears. When the opening degree of the oil pump lever is too large. White smoke or start failure ยท When the opening degree of the oil pump lever is small, Piston stop.

  29. I fell in love with one of these when I was in Melbourne a couple of years ago, a guy turned up to a little meet we went to in a super cool 5K swapped one. He was a GC, and he drove it pretty hard. I've pined for one ever since, but chances of owning one are probably pretty slim. Definitely one of my dream machines. Keep it K. I can't believe I'm saying that, but the character that this little KE15 had with the 5K in it was just so perfect for the car. Couple of doorty sidedrafts and you're good to go.

  31. And here she is tucked away in until I've got some coin to throw at a motor and whatever else she needs for rego. Needs a good cut and polish, I know a guy who's pretty talented at bringing old paint back so I'll have a chat to him and see what he recommends. Hopefully the paint is savable, I like the thought of owning a 49 year old car with original paint

  34. The plan is to chop the ends off it and make a simple Baja Bug. It's something I've always wanted to do but have never found a solid but lashed up car before. I'm not a fan off cutting up good old cars but I'm also not a fan of rusty Beetles. This is what I'll be aiming for, pretty sure it's going to be a bug eye. Aye Before I do that, I'm going to drop it, put a big motor in it, put some paint on and run around like that for a while. I've given it a service, taken the door bars and front half of the cage out coz I'm 50 and falling out of a car at the local Supermarket with your foot stuck under the seat is not big or clever. It's a piece of junk, it rattles crashes over bumps, lets the rain in and is as slow as fuck and doesn't really stop but i'm hooked. Update when my mate finds me the 2" drop spindles and 7" rims for the rear. Hang loose Bro or something.

  36. As the exhaust gasses expand in the megaphone it creates a vacuum behind the exhaust pulse which improves scavenging, creating more power. Or something. Maybe it just makes it real loud to create a false perception of more power.

And if you must, why didnt you do it the sensible way using xyz part?" project and im loving it p.s. solidworks had their lawyers send an email telling me to stop using their cracked software and pay them $12,200, so i might join you in learning fusion 360

  39. Hello, I'm looking at purchasing this motorsickle which also comes with spare engines and numerous parts: Is anybody able to collect this on my behalf in exchange for payment and possibly that sweet OG Warehouse plastic bag in the bottom picture? @Goat has kindly offered to store in in Masterton if someone is able to collect it. Thought I'd ask before I have a bid. Cheers, Neal.

  42. So, as it turns out, that type of Weber is reasonably hard to find. Hmmmm I think. There's some one Ebay but they're spendy. No matter, I'm in no rush, We'll see what happens... 6 months go by, in this time I buy a new desktop computer as I really want to teach myself how to use CAD, problem is I really have no interest in just drawing this that and the other thing as it doesn't relate to anything. This next bit is a bit of a blur. Scrolling Trademe one night and a matched pair of 40mm Weber IDF type 13 and 15s have been listed. I immediately hit buy now. So now I have three of these things. These 2 arrive in the post a week later and they are properly shagged, I think Freddie Mercury was alive the last time these carbs had fuel in them. One of the throttle shafts won't rotate at all and they're both just gross. This presented a bit of a dilemma as the carb above could actually function as a carb again, like, it's a happy carb. These two however, nope. Don't mind the DCOE on the left, that was stop gap between the first Weber being finished and #2 and #3 showing up. I pulled these two apart, which involved a bit of heat and having to cut the throttle shaft out of both of them, along with a few broken/seized components - Emulsion tubes, idle screws, that kind of thing. They then proceed to do laps of my desk, generally getting in the way for awhile.
