  1. Probably time for a little update on the Trumpy. So the new engine is currently being built up from an old PI motor that was lying around in a garage down south. Basic details are .40 thou over, forged pistons, Newman cam, lightened flywheel, balanced pistons/rods and rotating bits, 10:1 comp, extractors, and the EFI setup based on the old PI bodies. There is also a power steering rack and pump getting the treatment in town which will go in at the same time... Please enjoy some pictures

  5. Few more details of stuff. Decided I needed a collapsable flagpole.... searched around on the internet a bunch for something that didn't suck, then realized I already owned the perfect thing. For those here who aren't back country skiers... it's an avalanche probe, essentially a thick tent pole with a spike on the end. I just cable tied the flag to it and it all folds up and rolls into the sleeve it comes in. Perfect. Changed out one of the grommets for a sport climbing bolt hanger so I didnt have to unthread the cam buckle strap every time. Yes... I realize it isn't a rated carabiner and the bolt hanger should pull down ... Window nets that rebecca made. There is also a big one for the side doors. The strip magnets don't hold for s#!%, glad I have the circle ones. The rear ones also are bolted through the hinge. Little ties to hold them up. Cargo net in the back. The tan bag is our sleeping bag. For anyone who wants a bada$$ two person backpacking bag I'm a huge fan of the Nemo Tango Duo, it allows the two of us to carry one less bag and weighs no more than one normal bag, 800fill down and backless. The window nets and flag pole live in the cargo net as well when not being used. The flags were brought to me last month from a friend who was in India. Some pics of the roof in use Needed a place to stand so I stole this idea from someone on Expedition Portal to use cut down ute loading ramps. Now I need to figure out what to do with the second ramp since they are only really useful in pairs... freebie if you pick it up to anyone who wants it. Had the van out for its first shakedown overnight run at Cunningham Falls State Park. We were the only people there. It of course rained, but I was very very happy with the ARB awning, we were still able to cook outside. Also took it out to a local horse race last weekend, Maryland Hunt Cup. The tailgating area was full of yuppies so I picked the coolest looking guy I could to park next to. The other guys van was more of a tail gaiting rig, he pretty much spends all weekend driving between porting events, but he did have a removable bed platform. He had only finished it a few months ago so we chatted a bunch about our builds, cool guy. Lots of TV lots of sound Lots of batteries Lots of amps and lots of air for an air horn

  9. so direction changed so this a bit, i have been pining an ADV bike for a while, and after talking to a few barry's about how rare a genuine R80 G/S Paris Dakar is im going to bring this thing back up to its adventure orientated globe trotting glory, with a few modern twists. The Frame will get some HPN spec bracing, the front end will be swapped for a DRZ400 front end, i may go to a repro PD single seat and probably lower the stock footpegs a bit to make it a bit more comfortable to ride standing up, and i plan to take this thing where coffee shop dwelling ADV fag barry's wouldn't usually go. I have already picked up a nice stainless high exhaust for the bike, it goes up and then sits horizontal and goes back a bit further than what i think would look nice, so its gunna get chopped a bit so the muffler section is on about a 20 degree angle similar to the HPN rallye mufflers. This is the DRZ parts bike i picked up, the forks are still conventional so have the "classic" look but are 49mm as opposed to the measley 32mm BMW forks, they also have much better springs and valving. They will be shortened by using a 75mm spacer inside, i will use a DRZ / RM wheel with the suzuki brake and caliper, just with an aftermarket bigger 320mm disc. The only problem with this swap is the triple trees have 15mm offset, compared to the massive 32mm of the BMW triples. I am looking out for some RM250/125 triples which have 24.5mm which is about perfect, because they are USD triples they will just need spacers in the fork hole to pack them out so they clamp down on the 49mm stanchions. Apparently it makes them handle soooooo much better, so looking forward to that. At this stage im still just hoarding parts before i pull it down, need to get escort out of the shed which is going as i have realized its way too fucked an i CBF250 doing anything with it, then ill have some space to rip into this thing. looks like its going to be a fun winter project! cant wait to have it done and then smash out some awesome adventures with Action Waggy!!!!!!

  11. I haven't done too well at photographing progress on this thing as it's my daily and I'm usually just trying to get the job done with as little fuss as possible but I made sure I got photos of the panel repairs. When I bought the car it had a big square dent with a tear below it in the sill. I don't know for sure but I suspect that it fell off a jack at some point and punched in the sill. Initially the panel beater thought the dent could be pulled out and a small patch welded in but unfortunately there was some rust on either side of the dent so we bit the bullet and cut the lot out. I stupidly didn't take a before photo but I'm very pleased with the quality of the repair and it's nice to know there's steel there and not just bog! I still need to fit the chrome trim to the sill and then that's one more thing off the list. Discuss here:

  12. Through our facebook page we've received a request from a chap who works for Moa Beer: Hey there. I work for Moa Brewing Company. We are filming a video and are in need of some help. I need to find an old "Kiwi" car to use in the video. Unfortunately all of my friends with old school Toyotas don't fit the bill. We are looking for an old Holden or Ford, a Falcon, Cortina, Escort or something of the likes for a couple hours at 7am Monday morning in Westhaven Marina. Anyone who can help will be compensated for their time in beer etc. Is there any way you know anyone who could help, or you could put a post on the facebook page about this? As per usual Film type stuff, it's last minute, at an odd time, lacking details and pays poorly but if you are keen then let me know and I can forward you his email address. Cheers.

  16. Pretty randomly our rep at work got to yarning with a codge who wanted rid of some Datsun stuff his son left in behind. $100 got me a set of new crow valve springs, 2 A12 heads and set of barely used valves and sparkie plugs. At least $300 worth realistically. Hoped one would have a rocker shaft cause all mine aren't quite 100% but alas. I also decided that cam bearings would be cheap insurance since mine weren't mint so got a set and a spare just in case but overthought it bitched out on installing them myself in case I wrecked the new cam soon after firing it up..they are buried inside the block, and scope for disaster is wide, so dropped the block and head off at reconditioners.

  17. Haven't updated this for a while. Car is on the rotisserie at home in the garage and nothing new has really happened. I did receive my individual throttle manifold from @evil_si (Simon at Max Fabrication) and to say I'm happy is an understatement. Looks awesome on the engine! Need to get it in the engine bay to see how much room I have for trumpets. This manifold uses the standard 2jzge intake runners. They have been cut down and a 10mm plate was CNC'd. All throttles needed no modifying at all. Quite effective and didn't cost me the moon.

  20. I was talking about drill bits with a mate of mine and he said a similar thing to 8-ball. HE also noted that often it is only the very end of the drill bit that is hardened. HE has almost given up trying to sharpen dulled bits. HE said he can do it 2-3 times max and they will no longer hold the edge. HE is comparing them to old bits that he has sharpened down to nubs with out hardness issues. He also says a similar thing about the tap and die sets he has brought in recent years.

  23. More details: We are filming an advertisement, which I can't go in to details of, the filming will be at 7am, 8 May (next week). We need a car with character, something that wouldn't be out of place on NZ roads 30 years ago, and the scene will be a scrum pushing the car. We are looking for an old Ford or Holden, preferably Commodores or Falcons, but also very keen to look at Cortinas, Escorts, Kingswoods etc. The person will be reimbursed in beer, and our thanks

  29. So Manfield finishes up... And I'm enjoying doing superlap and the camaraderie between competitors. Buuut everything else in life was starting to feel a little stale. I have been daydreaming about moving to the South Island for the last few years, but I'm not a planner person... I figure if I wait until I have a plan, I will never do it. So I made a bold move - To just hand in 30 days notice at my IT Manager job, with no idea what I'm going to do next. I knew this meant sacrificing the remaining rounds of Superlap, and would probably lead to some hard times financially and otherwise. But it was just what I felt was necessary. All I knew was that I wanted to move out of Auckland for a while and start on a fresh page after some tough times over last year or two. A few days after this, I see an ad pop up on facebook... "Remote Dyno tutor/manager at HP Academy in Queenstown" Awww hell yes, could that be any more the ideal career/city change, at exactly the right time?! I applied for the job - and got it Then not long after, thanks to Bigfoot, I had some accommodation sorted too. It was the most low effort career/city change ever! Within the course of a week it went from my family probably thinking I was a bit of an idiot for quitting my job without a plan. (and a fair bit of doubting myself as well) to, "God damn it you're a jammy bastard Dave" To anyone who has along the way thought "David why not just take your car to a tuner instead of wasting your time doing all of these stupid tests/graphs/etc" Well, all of these things that I've done were a major contributing factor towards me getting the job. So there's probably some motivational message there about following your dreams or something. But end result is I'm pretty happy right now, and working at a company where drawing graphs and looking at datalogs etc is par for the course. Which is bloody exciting. So I packed my echo full of essential stuff and drove on down to start a new way of life down here. So far so good! Keeping some relevance to this thread though - My Carina is still back up in Auckland. It's packed full of "want but dont need" items, it's ready to hit the road as soon as I've organized a place down here that has a garage to store it in. I've been learning so much from Andre and the team, it feels like getting an apprenticeship from one of the best engine tuners in the southern hemisphere. I feel like I'm only just smart enough to be on the cusp of understanding some of the stuff Andre talks about. But I think I know just enough, that he doesnt feel like it's a waste of time explaining things to me. I expect that by the time I've got the Carina down here, I'll be ready to redo my tune from scratch using the new knowledge and tools now available to me. Cant wait! A new southern chapter of graphs, nerdiness, and awesomeness awaits the Carina. The next post in this thread, when the time comes. There will be graphs, oh yes, there will be graphs.

  32. Been a while since I've posted anything up on my Trumpy but have been having heaps of fun with it. The OD gearbox has made a world of difference to how it goes on the open road so that was definitely a worthwhile excercise. Since I got it back on the road last June it's done about 4500 miles with no real faults to speak of. Been mostly just around Nelson and Mot but have been up the lake half a dozen times and once down to Westport which was a blast... I am really stoked at how it handles now compared to before the big upgrade but have been pining for a bit more grunt. For a little while now I've been collecting bits for a new donk and am just about ready to pull the trigger and get it built. Plan is a 2.5 bored out a bit, up the compression, EFI, cam, headers etc... Ive got most of the stuff together for the EFI setup and have been modding a set of PI manifolds to suit. As soon as this is done I'll get the engine itself underway....

  43. Test drive yesterday revealed not so much a flat spot in acceleration, but more of a yawning abyss the car would fall into when throttle is applied too rapidly. I have mild whiplash as a result. Today's mission is to put all this In here Mum is in town and the kids have found a Rammstein CD and are headbanging to Du Hast in the dining room. Hilarious. Dad escapes to garage. Anyhoo, those green HT leads are original 1973 Cavis items. I got another box from Germany with rotor, condensor, points, and leads. Essentially shipped for free with the wheel bearings and brake stuff I was getting anyway. All parts were very cheap. Unfortunately I broke this while undoing, it's the insulator block in the side of the dizzy housing that keeps the points, LT, and condensor leads electrically seperate from the housing. Ideas where I can obtain another? I can still use the inside bit. New high impedance insulator manufactured from Marmite lid for the outside..complete with special offset hole. Feeling quite chuffed at achieving some Barrying. Test drive on the cards for this arvo. When I got it, the accelerator pump on the carb wasn't working so I suspected this at first for causing said abyss. It seems to be working now however, so hopefully replacement ignition components will fix it.

  44. Whoa! Car survive ok? Keen to see more of your one. I know your pain about the lada grief. A mate had a mint 125 at high school and this was before I had a real appreciation for all makes and models. He got grief a lot. His old man was a euro piner and loved fiats. I almost bought their Fiat 850 Coupe back in the day. His 125 was dark grey and had 125T interior, wheels, springs and engine from memory? Twin cam , dort dort sidies , the world's poorest throttle linkage (that broke almost every time he thrashed it) and performance unequal to another mates datsun 1200. Me sporting the bleached hair 20 years ago! (with Anpanman on forum) and the old owner. It was actually a really cool car. There was a white 125 and a teal 124 that went for a steal at that auction in Wanganui I went to towards the end of last year. Some dealer from Bulls bought both for 5k (and they looked pretty immaculate.) He is now trying to sell each one for higher than he paid for both.

  46. I've slowly been working on this since the last update. Fixed a lot more rust, I'm happy that all the rust I will need to fix is done now. I have pulled the creased sill out and banged the door frame back to shape. Passengers floor is fixed, along with the jacking point and inner sill too Rust in the sill and quarter panel all gone too. I have cut a notch in the sill for a side exhaust too. Added this to the manifold and started making an exhaust, 2 & 1/4 to the side of the car, I'll T off it and put a pipe out the back too. Thanks CUL8R for the pipe and bends etc. Home made cap Also picked these up off Trade Me before xmas but only got them here recently And started to work out where they need to be mounted. Finally Thanks to Big Louie for these little gems! I might have to get some Capri rotors and a set of spacers for them. Thanks. viewtopic.php?f=18&t=25081
