today i was woken up at 6.30 and i couldn't go back to sleep so i got stuck into this early. lots of this, 2016-04-23_08-49-05 by sheepers, on Flickr resulted in me getting the motor and box out and pulling the box apart. i think i might have found the problem. 2016-04-23_12-32-38 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-23_12-32-46 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-23_12-33-02 by sheepers, on Flickr14 points

today i did a bit of stuffing about. nothing major just lots of little bits. so this car now features, a throttle pedal sun visors a rear view mirror with a switch dealio for night time driving arm rests actually connected to the doors fully functioning brakes (still have air in them i think but they work super duper) non fucked indicator, windscreen wiper and light switch stalk things that aren't covered in paint a new steering wheel (the "twin cam turbo" one i had on my blue car ages ago) a horn that works probably some other thing I've forgotten. and then i drove it around a bit. it goes exactly like a normal car that you get in and drive about without any hassle, i would happily drive it to Wellington tomorrow and I'm 100% sure it would make the trip without raising a sweat. i have no idea what a 2TG is supposed to go like I've never driven any others but this one seems to go OK. I'm going to ask Mike to take it for a hoon and see what he thinks. 2016-04-23_10-24-23 by sheepers, on Flickr8 points

A bit more progress on this. Got some tyres fitted to the TURBO's Got a jockey wheel, fitted the doors and tore off the old purple and ripped tints Picked up a sweet matching Cruiser at the op shop in Taupo, and retinted the windows Made a bad ass friend Need some proper shank nuts for the rims and some number plate lights and a bit of a wiring tidy up and its good to go to see my friendly WoF man, then Van-cessories4 points

Took the day off yesterday and missioned it all back together, scraped off the piston tops, changed the oil and filter etc. Started straight away so I got it up to temp then reset all the valve clearances as this needs to be done hot. All was basically fine except for a chuff in the exhaust where I had split it and a bit of a hesitation when accelerating, I thought this might mean the carbs needed a balance, but then I remembered that I had adjusted the points gap when I was troubleshooting the problem. So today I sealed the exhaust and reset the timing, it is good as gold now. Dizzy has one of those sweet knobs to fine tune the timing without having to crack the clamp, which is superior. Should be good for another 100000k now.3 points

pretty happy, today i got it running with the MA engine and its not smokey, no strange noises from the engine and no strange noise from gearbox/clutch….. success. took it for a small drive around the block but not very far as it needs a fan belt to drive the water pump as the old one won't fit as MA has a different alt set-up and a different water pump pulley. so off to get a belt tomorrow and bolt the bonnet back on then proper test drive3 points

engine/gearbox removal. it begins. i thought it a good idea to do a compression test before i took the motor out. very consistent readings of between 160 and 170. well, on the front 5 cylinders there was, number 6 however decided that 70PSI was the most it could muster. so the motors fucked and will need a rebuild. tomorrow more motor disassembly . 2016-04-22_08-20-19 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-22_08-20-10 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-22_08-20-03 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-22_08-19-56 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-22_08-19-48 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-22_08-19-33 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-22_08-14-06 by sheepers, on Flickr2 points

All the way though this project I've been conscious of being overwhelmed with the size of the task at hand, attacking one mini project at a time, ticking them off, moving on to the next one. Looking though my photobucket the other day I noticed how few of the photos actually look anything like a car, just red, brown, grey metal shapes, every now and then it's great for the motivation to mock up a few panels, sit back with a beer and bong, and picture the day it's all back together and rolling the streets again. photoshop is also great for this. hell yeah.2 points

Success, went into AA this morning asked for MR2B, filled it inand was given a plate and 12 months rego for $109 Sucess by Andrew Whalley, on Flickr Figured id try AA as its just a couple of office ladies rather than grumpy vehicle inspectors. Only trick is that on the form the vehicle type is not on the list of options. Options list starts at "02" but a moped is "01"2 points

Went and had a gander at this and put a deposit on it about a month ago, and finally organised myself to go get it yesterday. Formerly owned by ESKIN8R who i think originally chopped it up and put it together and then Zebra Dude, who got it painted and sorted the draw bar etc. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/26688-zebra-dudes-esky-van-trailer/ (photos are down) I knew i was in the right place! (you will know their works by the trail of bodies) Needed the lights wiring up, + some beers and Ben didnt finish till 6, so by the time it was ready to roll it was pretty late! Ran the gauntlet no troubles at all, and tows well, will go even better with some weight in it. I also managed to convince Ben to through in some schwweeeet rims. In case you are not a wheel aficiondo, they are * 13 x 6JJ * CHEVIOT * TURBO * Anyway today started getting into it, cut down the roofies from the van ( ) hung a gas bottle from a handy attachment and pondered on how to cram a LWB sized vans worth of camping stuff into half an Escort... Solution - Make the small thing bigger with Extentions! Roll * 13 x 6JJ * CHEVIOT * TURBO * to entice only the hottest classiest babes into the stabbin cabin. Need to buy some hardware to mount the doors then start thinking about the interior. Its basically going to be a bedroom for the boy + bathroom and kitchen that I can tow with the 2300, 125 or my daily1 point

Sorry guys, bit late notice this month. Few of us discussed the idea of pizzas at drovers next Tues in Feilding. Drovers is on manchester street near the clocktower if you haven't been there before. Blake suggested the Westpac carpark for somewhere to meet up beforehand. See you there!1 point

I did this: Also looked at the old motor and that thing is FUCKED. It looks like the bolt that clamps the two halves of the counterweight came loose (was 10mm unwound) causing the two halves to separate over time. I couldn't figure out where all the oil it kept leaking was coming from until I wiped it's arse and found that many things came to an abrupt stop inside the motor and smashed a great big crack/dent into the case. Inside is full of silver slime and tiny bits of everything. Cam, valves, flywheel and coil will be useful spares. Everything else is goneburger.1 point

When a drunk hit my trailer and broke my range rover they AA went nuts trying to help as the guy owned up and bills got paid. Once they got to 5 grand though he stopped paying. insurance gave my car back with issues that never fully got fixed I ended up selling it. My advice get stuck in fix everything as quick as possible while insurance are happy to pay up.1 point

I had planned on working on the mower deck today... I got some R-clips to replace the split pins in the clevis pins that hold the deck on. I also got some replacement fuel hose and replaced the old perished hose. Then, for some reason I decided to remove the steering linkage from the left kingpin. I assumed there was a plastic bush that was worn down to nothing.... But it turned out, it was a metal bush. It was super loose because the two halves of the front crossmember had separated making the hole far too big. I couldn't clamp it closed while it was on the mower. So I took it off to put it in the vice. Then welded the shit out of it. The steering is better now. The top of the kingpin no longer rocks back and forth when you try turn.1 point

Considering I live only 5 minutes’ drive away in Milford I've got no excuse not to turn up for a look. (Sadly only in Mrs sr2's modern 'Mazdabator'). Until now I've never been brave enough to throw aside any concerns I have re personal safety and actually meet a group of psychotic Oldschool members en-masse. (I did however meet SOHC and it only confirmed my worst suspicions). Look out for a stunningly handsome old bald prick, wearing plastic sandals with socks, a raincoat with the bottoms cut out of the pockets dribbling out of the corner of his mouth because there's a girl's school next door to Smales Farm! (If I'm being pursued by two gentlemen wearing white dust coats carrying a strait jacket I've never seen them before in my life). Cheers, Simon (sr2)1 point

I apologise for the lack of updates over the last few days, I've been busy working on the car. It is now all physically back together, drivetrain, exhaust, brakes, engine etc all done. All coolant hoses etc are hooked up. I have also relocated the battery to the trunk using e36 parts. Tonight and over the weekend I will be doing the last few small jobs and doing the wiring. The plan to have it driving by the end of the weekend looks very realistic. More to come soon.1 point

spent ages (like fucking ages) at Nicks shop last night trying to get spark. no joy, the module we were trying to use wouldn't switch the trigger coming from the dizzy pickup. but, i did manage to take the best parts from the two distributors and build one good one so the action plate is now a lot better and the air gap on the pickup is much more consistent. late in the evening we found a module for a 2TG on line so Nick is going to order that today and that should make it go. 2016-04-22_06-25-32 by sheepers, on Flickr1 point

My girl-friend at the time (now wife) took some pics of me actually working on it. Not sure if welding this close to the petrol can is OSH approved! Definitely OS approved though. Things have moved on a bit now - just welding in the steering shaft support bearing - you can also see the Trans oil cooler I built from an old fridge compressor. cars054 I had trial fitted a seat to determine the pedal placement - note the G-Clamps holding the steering column on - I seem to remember driving it around like this - just because I could - brakes are entirety optional cars0551 point

Minutes work https://youtu.be/Ibdq6SD21gU Voltage reg is getting warm but hasn't hit thermal cut off yet. will do a test at work all day and see how it goes. Will probably put a bigger heat sink on/use the ammo tin as a heat sink when I eventually put it in there. I still have to figure out why the '1' of the 10 hour(s) doesn't change over. And I'll have to test/figure out why there is no switching going on in the transistors for the voltage doubler. Then I can work out what I'll be doing with the set buttons and mounting of the dekatron1 point

Finally traced this problem down - a lot of people had suggest bad ground so I thought I'd double check that but they all turned out good. I was then thinking about running a 12v source to bypass the ignition switch - kill switch etc in case any wiring was shorting out in that area - I was trying to work out where to run the power to and I thought I'd just check the resistance from the positive battery lead (the battery was out being recharged at the time) to the 12v wires that lead to the coils. Everything read as expected but then I noticed that the resistance shot up if I moved the positive battery lead around - up down left right etc. I removed the lead (which lead to the starter solenoid) and all the braided metal is breaking down at the starter solenoid end (weirdly the starter has never given any issues) the 12v lead to the rest of the loom branches off where the main positive lead attaches to the starter solenoid. Knowing that the starter motor is still getting enough juice somehow I took the lead for the rest of the loom and attached it straight to the battery positive terminal and goodbye ignition troubles - she's been running fine for three days now! Theres a few pics of the lead below the smaller red wire was leading the the main fuse / rest of the loom before I bypassed it. So all in all it kind of was a bad ground - only on the other side of the battery - I'm a new lead made up for it and hopefully she keeps on trucking as its been pretty bloody irritating getting to the bottom of this problem.1 point

Sooooooooo while I've had the car apart for other stuff. cobbled together an injector test bench so I can work out deadtimes and flow rates etc etc. Took about 4 hours of running tests at various pulse widths and voltages etc last night to characterize the Altezza injectors @ 60psi. At 60 they are awesome and linear right down to 1.6ms which is lower than what my car idles at. Will test a bit lower today and see where they start becoming a problem Hopefully the second set of injectors will take a bit less time, now that I know what the process is. I came up with a spread sheet that helps figure out the dead time, basically you adjust the number up or down until you get a flat line instead of it sloping one way or the other. Deadtime too high: Deadtime too low: Then once I worked out the deadtime for this voltage (13.4v) I could run a simpler test at other voltages, as I already know one of the values. So this time I'm looking to get the flow rate matching at all voltages, once their deadtimes have been excluded. Based on already knowing the value for 13.4v The Altezza injectors are awesomely linear though. (If injectors were non linear you'd see less of a straight line and more of a curve) It will be interesting to see how well my $120 Aliexpress 1000cc single pintle injectors compare, haha. I should probably start putting my car back together though, trackday is next weekend!1 point

Ordered some seat covers from the states and got Greg (64 Valiant) to fit and trim them to the seats. Before in not too bad condition considering. Vinyl was really brittle and hard. After! The lighting isn't great but you get the idea. Make-shift solutions are often the most comfortable... okay maybe not this one. I'm really happy with the colour match. Big ups to Greggles for his work.1 point

Few more pics: Close up of front showing factory option fogs, with covers Side profile - very straight Other side - also straight - but you can see surface rust on the bonnet and a pillar - looks really good in the gaps though so this must be from moisture hanging around on the surface. More surface on the bootlid - all trim present and correct though1 point
