  1. and hows its going to be rolling into vinz looking like. Shit I'm pretty not sure on this, its either going to be an epic win or epic fail. or a whale. biggest issue really is time, I'm now over a week behind my planned schedual due to issue with mount, and I need to get ripping into Nikis Austin as soon as I can, which is this weekend haha We will see. Also I silicone the tires because Bizzo told me to.

  2. Right so I thought I would chuck this up here in case there are other weirdos out there like me who like these piles of crap. It's a 1987 TM Magna Elite Auto so top of the range for its day with mostly all electrics, four wheel discs, digital dash, air con etc Found it on Gumtree after the owner for the last 20 years went into a rest home and her neighbour was selling it off on her behalf. He went through the trouble of organising a roadworthy certificate (like a WOF, you need before you can transfer ownership) of which it passed, but then it had to remind us that it is a Mitsubishi and then proceeded to lose forward drive from the transmission. I happened to know where another identical model was with a good trans but stuffed engine and bought them both for cheap. I guess this is a thread mostly to document what is bound to go wrong with it and what I've ended up fixing.. starting with the transmission... Old (previously rebuilt) trans out, 120,000kms donor trans lurking behind it mounted back together and finally legal with club reg Stay tuned for the next failure...

  3. At work . That's not even the track, that's the testing ring. Down the hill, there is 2.3km of paved private glory. I'm not going to lie, I've managed to score about the best job, in the world, ever. Yesterday I fixed a Ferrari 458 Challenge racecar (minor electrical fault). Today I spent the day fitting aftermarket race suspension to a Lotus 340R. It's the bizzaro world, and I'm going to ride it out for all I can.

  4. Cheers man! Thought I better do an update So had my first crack at competition level over the weekend. D1NZ Pro sport which is the feeder series for D1NZ-Pro. Drove the car 3 hours down to Tauranga and my prayers were answered as it was soaking wet! I got in a decent amount of practice dialing in the car for the conditions. Sadly qualifying was cancelled as it kept bucketing down and there were a few crashes because of the standing water. I was only just linking the track nicely in the wet so I was a bit concerned about the dry. So we decided on 70PSI and I went out. Even with the short run up I was linking the track, not super well but enough to qualify in 14th place! I had wrecked my tyres in qualifying as I had been running them all day so I put on my daily Yokos with 80PSI in hoping the slightly smaller dia would help when following. I came up against 3rd seed Calvin Clark who knows how to drive. On my lead run I lay down possibly my best run all day which left me with a huge grin! Sadly on the chase run the rear was a bit too slipper and I was feathering the throttle and shallowing angle to try keep up which ended up with me losing. But Im still exetremely happy with how it went! So next round is in Taupo which is another bit of a drive but its a track I have done so I should hopefully be a bit more comfortable. Thanks to my mate Dave we have some outcar video and incar! Out car https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTwn5-mFbOM&feature=youtu.be In car I have also made a page on facebook so I can try and get some sponsors because as I found out its quite expensive doing competition, if you could have a look that would be much appreciated. https://www.facebook.com/ThatGreenMX5/?fref=nf

  6. I've been doing a few things to get the car running again. the wiring loom is hilarious in its fuckedness. Nick came over the other night and went through it and fixed a whole bunch of shit. there is still a bit to do to get the wiring sorted but its getting there, and its become apparent why it was difficult to get the starter to engage among other things. I'm going to hide most of the loom except for a small bit that goes under the radiator so its needs work anyway. so it now has brakes and a clutch again. I've attached a few bits and I've been cleaning and prepping other bits to go back on. oh, and Greg came over earlier tonight and fixed a couple of runs and polished them out. 2016-01-14_08-38-00 by sheepers, on Flickr

  7. Found air leaks, it lives. Milkshake oil, gears and brakes barely work but it lives. Handbrake doesn't do anything but then again the lining is 90 years old and crumbly.

  8. I have asked Auntie Google for an answer, to which she showed me: VISUAL APPEARANCE Tempered glass possesses the basic optical qualities of annealed glass. The induced stress condition sometimes produces a slight bow in tempered glass lights. Tempered glass that has been manufactured in a vertical tempering oven contains small surface depressions resembling dimples along one edge. These marks are caused by the pointed metal tongs which support the glass during its passage through the oven. Glass which is passed horizontally through an oven may contain a very slight surface wave caused by contact with the rollers. The waviness can sometimes be detected when viewing reflected images from a large distance. Finally, the air quench nozzles discharge air in a fixed, reciprocating or rotating motion. The area of air quench can be seen through polarized glass as arrays of irridescent spots or lines. Under some lighting conditions these patterns can be seen in ordinary light.

  9. Oh Boy I got plenty excited seeing the engine bay like this.... Its not nearly as close to going as first appearances suggest though. The banananana extractors and 48 Delortos are just sitting there. Spot the gaps. And a few minor details like the gearbox mount is now 25mm too far back behind the pinto perhaps making the driveshaft too long. It still looks the business though!

  11. Did i mention it that i think it should be lower? i can fit SOHCs version of this car under the chassis rails. Which are 24.5 inches off the ground (average, 24 front 25 rear)

  12. Casual update, when I dropped the car off they gave me a statutory declaration form to fill out to say legally that I am the current owner took a whole of 2 mins to fill out and a 1 min trip into the local district court to get it witnessed

  16. Cheap chinese replacement windscreen. It's just some weird polarizing effect. It won't explode or anything. You won't be able to wear polarized sunglasses in it though.

  17. Needs front wheel bearings, about $1,000USD spent on manking the diff' nice (high speed gears & reduce the disturbing noises) reline brakes, fit floor and probably a few other things i haven't listed. Why is the exhaust bends crappy? Haven't got a pipe bender at home, i can cut that section out and replace it later. And make a proper hanger, it's tied up with wire for a test drive in those pics.

  18. I hope you siliconed the engine bay too, just so when ol' Jim pops the bonnet to inspect it and leans on the engine he'll slip off in comical fashion.

  19. I only wear polorized glasses and its never been an issue. Do you have a polorized filter on that lens when you took the photos??
    2 points
  20. I wondered what that was for ages after seeing it in photos, then I bought some polarising sunglasses, I have noticed the effect is lesser on newer cars, 70's are wavy as shit, 80's is more even and new cars just look like they have a purple tinge to the entire screen. I've only noticed it from the inside of one old vehicle (hiace), it's not much of a problem

  21. Gave this thing a bit of a thrashing at work this afternoon. I never realised how annoying the exhaust sounds from outside the car! Will do something about that ASAP.

  22. pulled the lid off to have a closer look. Here you can see the Eaton M90 supercharger, with throttle intake at the rear. These engines did not run an intercooler, although aftermarket ones are available. Looks like clearance to the throttle body will be tight, otherwise everywhere else looks easy

  23. Well its a new year and I thought I should do some work on the old girl. 1st time I've tryed the new cross member since making it and its a nice fit. Then mounted the escort steering rack and the to is a good fit with full movement and nothing hitting...so far Then I put spear motor and box in and that was not straight forward at all....thanks to the shut loads of rafters in the garage roof ....so close together and low. Ended up leaving the motor hanging while I lifted the front of the car so the wife could take the axle stands out so the car was low enough. Once all in its good to see plenty of room around the master pipes at the rear of the motor and also around the steering joint. Now I can continue making shit.

  28. So last year they had a fiddle with the system classes & whatnot Majority of the info you want is here : https://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/licensing-rego/ though if you're like me & your car make/model isn't listed then there's not much info specifically relating to "Classic cars" or "Vintage" So I asked directly via NZTA Facebook page & received the following information via PM Posting this info in the effort it may help or be informative if you spy any private info that should not be shared or this is in the wrong section/useless then feel free to let me know or delete & I'll happily edit or amend information correct at the time of posting

  31. Good job guys, get yourself one of these http://www.jaycar.co.nz/Test-%26-Measurement/Thermometers/Non-Contact/Mini-Non-Contact-IR-IP67-Thermometer/p/QM7218 and check the temp at the thermostat housing and compare with the bottom of the Radiator to see what the actual temp is and how well the radiator is working.

  36. They got the V6 in the next shape Magna. The NZ V3000 was basically a clone of the lesser known Galant Duke V3000 which was sold in very few numbers in Japan due to its displacement and extra tax. Everything came in a complete knock down kit and only stuff like the interior, wiring looms and glass was manufactured in NZ, while in Aus the Magna has PBR brakes, Aussie made Bosch alternator, Aussie made engine and driveshafts etc. Club reg allows you to drive it for 45 or 90 days of the year for a reduced price. You just fill in the dates you drive it in a log book and once you run out of your allocated entries that's it for the year. Costs $70/140 as opposed to $770+ for a years rego otherwise. Obviously is better suited to project cars and not daily drivers. The car must be 25+ years old, modifications approved and you have to be a financial member of a club.

  44. What had I actually bought then ? Its a June 1972 car so one of the last made and was originally dark green metallic. Actually a 2000GT so manual windows but has the 130 ps twin artichoke GT-X engine. Although I bought it as stock it has got some pretty hard springs and has been lowered to a point that you can just get your fist under the sump. Low enough for round here. The rear arches have been rolled to fit something a bit larger than the 6 x 14 +12's that are on there. Rust-wise it's a goodun. There seems to be a bit of an internet myth that every Hako has no floor or chassis legs left. Not true. I'm sure it'll go flakey at some point but at the moment it's seems ok. The engine is strong, feels like more than 128 hp to me but with out pulling it apart I'll never know. Drives nicely, few little niggles but I'm hoping to sort it out properly this Spring. Got a wedding job in July. Just done servicing so far. More pics before y'all nod off Action picture of me, I don't normally move fast enough to go blurry There had always been something bugging me about what the car looked like. Finally the penny dropped, the sills were black. Out with a couple of tins of underguard, instant lowering ! I've also lined the bonnet up properly since.... That's about it really so far. I have some wheels on the way from Japan that should look the bollocks and I'm going to get a front spoiler too. I definitely wont be chopping those rear arches though, loving the Surfline. Engine wise, not really sure what to do. The L20 isn't that tuneable apparently, if I go silly L28 with Triples I'm then going to have to upgrade the brakes too. And the clutch. And probably my Cajones .Time will tell. Ultimatley I'd like to paint it ivory or dark red. I'll get stuck into it over the next weeks and post pics and words. Thanks for reading !

  45. sooooooo long time no touch cause of a crappy beetle but time has come. i have acquired two spare gearboxes that i need to pick up when the guy gets home from his holiday. he has also asked if he could use it for his daughters wedding along side his valiant. here is a pic of when i meet him at beach hop last year so the roof also needs some attention. so i started with removing windows and then while i was there i removed the headlining cause i may as well make that look pretty while im there and after this the windows should not have to come out again. also braved up at removing the side molding trims on the guttering so i can clean down behind them as well. here are some pictures il get some sanding disk tomorrow and steel my mates sand blaster and get all crazy about it all. lets hope this pull apart doesnt end up like the last one haha
