  1. So the first task after the bathroom extension was to have a kitchen area along the back wall. Kitchens are expensive, even for the kitset things. So after a bit of Facebook market searching (never expected to find good stuff on there) I came across a yuck cabinet thing that can only be described as the wooden entrance piece to school camp where 1J5's were stored in the top, and school bags below, and maybe one of those weird clear grey/brown mugs on the top too that a relief teacher sipped from occasionally. Well this thing was also bloody heavy but only $50 so we hoisted it up into the van and to the shop, and I spent 3 days regretting my purchase. Had various ideas for it, tested different woods to see how food-grade polyurethane held up, then eventually stumbled upon a sale of ply at Bunnings and was sold. We sanded up the cupboards and drawers and took the top piece off. Spent another few days testing between paints and stains, with the matte black paint turning out chalky and holding fingerprints, so I settled for an outdoor satin black deck stain. Don't tell the Bunnings paint lady though or she has a meltdown. Ended up sacrificing the left had drawer and cupboard for a Bunnings showroom special oven and hob, and the shelf found it's final place but not by choice, because the chemicals in the floor coating has stuck the feet to that position. So it stays. And the legs are off a commercial cooker that were the cheap price of free. After that we went to work on the dirty/laundry area, but didn't want the machine visible because it's not cool and industrial, and wanted an area to clean car parts etc. Went with the cupboard theme of black with ply top and genuinely impressed with how it all came together, especially with Leonard. And other than those jobs, we had to get some of the bathroom done after months of procrastinating over different ideas. I got Ryan to leave some of the concrete bare, because I wanted to still have some of the tiltslab in the room, so I put what I thought was polyurethane on it, just turns out it was some wood varnish (definitely don't tell Bunnz lady) and it worked a treat, stopped the concrete dust and allows the water to run off. I waterproofed the shower over 2 days, the second day took 3hours straight of coating but old mate Missy and Ice Cube got me through. Then I found a tiler and it all went well until we were one tile short to finish. A few days later it was all tickety boo. Note to self though: if you've never had a dual shower head scenario going on before, do ensure the dump head is turned on first and not the shooty one. Stephen wanted me to have a photo of the shower on and a beer in the soap box, so turned it on full steam with old shooty head pointed at me and the camera. So the camera is thoroughly clean now. Next we are finishing off the final wall, and deciding an idea to make a bathroom vanity. Any ideas are hugely welcome - we got some galv feet off AliExpress which are lush so that's idea one.

  2. Glued the strengthening plates on. Pleased how well the upside down welds went. Didn't push my luck, I'll fully weld it later once I've made a rotisserie.

  4. This weekend was productive thanks to a few friends helping (Was on dad duty as well). While a mate was collecting the engine crane, another friend put the wheels on the car and rolled it outside. Some genius thought it'd be a good idea to do a skid (me) so I started her up, sat on the rusty floor and effortlessly ripped a single peeler. Success. All went pretty smooth form here with removing engine, a few shitty wiring examples from the original builder (Wires crimped instead of plugged) but nothing we can't deal with. With minor swearing, the engine was out and it became apparent that the top radiator stay needs to probably be removable. There are scratches up the firewall on the drivers side where the rear engine bracket has about 3mm clearence when trying to remove the sucker. Engine was out finally and the car could go back in ready for me to remove subframes and go on a hunt for some more rust. After all that, no more photos was taken, it all went back inside in a hurry. Spent an hour with it last night getting it to a good position to lift it on axle stands (See: Final resting ground). Plan is to take all subframes and suspension off, I have requested/ordered an energy hyperflex kit from Adam @ Speedscience. will then clean up arms stuff then Por15, install new bush and reinstall to car. Today also bought an engine and body loom from an SIR EG Civic. This will be sacrificed to convert the car to obd1 and also to ensure nothing is missed/fucked from the current butchered Da6 wiring job. It allows me to have free wiring for things like dash fans etc which the car doesn't have... And now for pictures. Rest now sweet Prince. Location of the engine until I can get new bits for it. Should probably do cambelt etc right? During the process, the was left in the trolley jack... Hmm We only lifted the tow hooks. Hmmm, not this side... (Can also see the traction bar & mounts, needs to be cleaned up or redone) Oh, don't even need to get on my hands and knees to see this lol. That bit to the left bottom is bottom rad stay BTW. You shouldn't be able to see light through that other hole...

  5. Quick fixer upper for one last hoon on Queens birthday.... Someone left coffee grinds in the fuel filter..... Yep, that sucks, tank is gunna have to come out, will be put on the winter list. Considering the filter is ~2 years old so I am going to just replaced it and let the rust be tomorrow Nick's problem. The alternator issue turned out to be an OK repair, considering I went about it the hardest way possible! The pulley is meant to have 2 flats that engage on the shaft, my guess is that years ago the nut got loose, was also stripped at some stage in its life to finally work loose until it spun and made a right mess of the lot. My fix? In some odd moment of cheap and quick I decided that fabricating a new pulley was the correct approach. (I really should have just fizzed the pulley onto the spacer and been done with it) Step 1) Wait for the workshop staff to go home and leave some machines unguarded Step 2) Spin bit of 6061 real fast like Step 3) Dig around behind the CNC mills and uncover a largely neglected indexing head and spin many dials real slow and orderly Step 4) Realise the M12 thread is actually poked and have to change the design, interference fit for the pulley and cut a M10 thread with stuff all material free. Step 5) Bake till crispy and seal in the luck thus far. Step 6) Plug it back together Step 7) Dump it back in the hole where no one will ever see it again. Step 8 turn in for the night, waking the household this late with Datsun noise will not be in my longterm interests, will be a long day waiting to test drive! Very stupid/illogical that I put in all this effort, half as much would have grafted a modern alternator into position with much less future hassle.

  13. I had worked on this last weekend but didn't take any photos. Captive nuts welded to strengthening plates. Straightened welding warpage in strengthening plates. Embiggened holes in chassis rail to clear captive nuts. Cleaned, sanded then acetoned chassis rails before spraying with some zinc 'weld through' primer, that I'm totally going to wire brush off where the welds will go. Sanded the strengthening plates and zinc primered them too.

  14. V3.0 Bottom end All the ARP's Threw the bottom end in the car, before attempting to put head on, since don't have an engine stand. One small issue. 16v sumps are a little bigger than the 20v one that was in there. Hits the bash plate/ brace. will probably modify the engine mounts engine to lift the engine 5mm or so. cbf'd taking sump back off.

  15. Got the roof off, you can see how damaged it is. I reckon it must have hit something while open or possibly someone tried to pry it open from the front? I have almost all of the bits to fix it but I am also hoping to get a whole 'new' roof. Started cleaning out the crap from the floor, lots of broken glass. Not safety glass either, its in fckn everything, even the air vents and gearshift holes: It's all dry inside now, so pulled out the fcked carpet (classy 70's blue loop carpet): Found a key! (and some rust in the floor): Tried the key in the ign key hole but it snapped in there...cool. Coolcoolcool. That's annoying but it refused to turn with the other key as well which was also rusty. So no real loss, I was thinking I'd need to replace the barrel anyway. Also found this magazine behind the drivers seat under the carpet, lol: The steering wheel is weirdly bent: Cut the ign key wires because I wanted to see what would happen with power. Not much, although I can get a click from a relay in the back which must be the starter motor. There is a crude fuse box which is a bit stuffed so might explain why I don't get much happening. So out of interest I put some fuel in the carb, plugged in the coil that was inside the car and connected it to battery positive. Tried to crank over with the jumper leads straight on the starter but nothing happened. Think that spare battery is stuffed. Took the battery out of the 200sx and tried with that. OK so engine is cranking over again, but pretty sluggish and no sign of it wanting to start.... that was kind of optimistic. Ran out of time to do anything more so haven't checked to see if there is any spark. Have chucked the battery on charge and will see if it cranks over any better tomorrow. Maybe the starter is just tired or the bores are rusty, who knows

  16. Bought a Fiat 500D a couple years ago for the Mrs. Was supposed to be a quick panel and paint, re reg and enjoy. Had beers with angle grinder out. Discovered many cancers. Got depressed. Moved overseas and forgot about it. Moved back to NZ and it hasn't turned itself in to dust so I decided to get it done. Hopefully making a thread will motivate me to finish it.

  17. i never thought id get to own one of these cars. like, never. so long story short Rhona needed a new daily and she wanted, no, demanded, something a bit less agricultural than a 80 series landcruiser. after talking about many different Toyotas i asked her to just put anything that took her fancy (and was a Toyota) on the watch list. many weird and wonderful things got added to the watch list chosen solely by colour and then something amazing happened. she had added an ISF. i said "you know how much that costs right?" discussions were had. a plan came together and we were test driving an ISF. the first one i drove was just punting around the back streets of greenlane but even then i knew this car was something amazing. we drove a few more and the boss didnt stop liking them, then the impossible happened. We actually bought one. say hello to our Larry. 2019-05-24_05-37-38 by sheepers, on Flickr 2019-05-24_05-37-55 by sheepers, on Flickr 2008. 21. Lexy has a little Mazda Premacy that is supposedly a 7 seater... but you better be a small person for the back seats though! but you all ride small bikes so should be fine? It also has a teeny tow bar for a teeny trailer (but i dont has trailer). I realistically wont do anything to the scoot as too much other shit to spend time and money on... but keen to potentially partake in shenanigans somehow. Plus @sentra will break down on day 1 and we can have a 2 day vengaboys sing along party! So don't rely on me as support vehicle, but when push comes to shove, i can 100% be bullied into attending

  22. @Thphantum Work ute could well be our best bet thank you! Will confirm a bit closer, would be a good option though. I'm pretty confident on knowing the fuel stops on day 1 and 3, but 2 is a bit of an unknown, pretty sure theres no gas from Waikaremoana through to Gisborne unless you detour and/or backtrack. From Lake Waikaremoana to Gisborne on the route we're hoping to take, looks to be 155km. Surely thats achievable for most bikes without jerry can? Or just pinch some off one of those frugal slow bikes. As far as accommodation goes I'll leave that up to the individuals to sort that out among themselves. I've booked a room with potentially 1 surplus bed (for now) at Waikaremoana. Were you looking at heading around there anyway? Or making a special looksie trip? I had thought about just going hammer down round (most of) the loop (in a car) in one day to get it all figured out. You could ride a questionable CT?

  23. what a wild weekend just been, PPSC clocked up 550 odd kms doing a return trip from Feilding to Kuripapango, on the Napier side of the Napier-Taihape Road. taking nothing but rural back roads through the beautiful inland north island, including plenty of gravel, suspension bridges and angry wife-beating cockys doing a shit job at moving stock, climbing some 900 metres in altitude along the way. To my pure amazement the MT50 rose to the challenge and sat at WOT doing 9000rpm all day with no dramas at all. considering 24 hours prior to the trip we had welded up a very pesky hole in my exhaust which has been an ongoing debacle. after being unable to weld up the hole due to its swiss cheese/rust construction, Blizzshop managed to tack a piece of steel over it. This thing is incredible. I carry a reasonably solid tare at 90 odd kegs, and this weapon sat comfortably at 65-70km all day and climbed hills at reasonable pace, showing no signs of weakness. There's something to be said about nanging a 50cc 2 stroke at its limit, sustaining minimal traction on a gravel road, one of life's greatest pleasures. It takes a lot of riding to keep it in the power band at all times and time your gear changes perfectly to maintain momentum up hills. Perhaps if i can be fucked i might track down a 17" rear wheel and swap the rear, it looks quite funny with the 19 front and 16 rear. And of course keep blasting gravel roads into the sunset. Pic dump for Fred

  27. na the wheels are off something that i didn't pay enough attention to what i was being told. i have it written down somewhere. the sounds the thing makes are orgasmic. it is all things to all people. it sounds like a 6/71 diesel pulling hard up a steep grade to the ears of a black smoke stalwart. its an RG500 at 9 grand to the man who stood beside the flint walls at the isle of mann. its a RR Merlin dropping through the bottom of a dip and throttling hard through a vertical climb to the ears of a british weirdo it is all things to all men.

  28. Stripped the Ute down for round 2 or rust work last weekend. Had to drop the steering column and pedal box to clear everything so that the rust in the rain gutter could be sorted properly. A couple before and after...rain gutter and also the drivers side wheel well frame (unsure of correct name) Whilst a mate was doing the welding I started to play around with the new Vitex timber for the decking. Quite happy with this. Will be oiling it and securing it this coming weekend. Need to cut down two lengths by 8mm each and we will be away.

  29. Just been doing my due diligence. The Lake Whakamarino Lodge at Tuai is around 10kms further than the Lake Waikaremoana Holiday Park. (Give or take) And a single dorm bed is only $30 per night. And I can get a mean hot feed, and a cooked breakfast there. That also means, no carrying a tent, or a bedroll. (Those were a p.i.t.a. last year) Plus after sleeping in/on K-marts finest at the batch (with bruised ribs) I swore I wasn't doing that again. I'd defo prefer to stay with the majority of the other participants. But I'm too smart/old and fucked to be roughing it.

  32. No fixing, just hooning update. Went for a cruise down to lake Tekapo with the Datsun club. Car ran great except for the usual niggles, up one of the last hills into Tekapo I seemed to loose fuel pressure, couldn't find any issues on the side of the road and got home no trouble, will pull the filters as first call and go from there. Secondly had the alternator pulley split in two a few hundred meters from home, will dump that out for what I hope is just a quick tightening. Have noticed the back end feels a bit loose at times but with a person in the backseat it feels much better, having checked all the bushes can I interpret that the car is requesting a light serving of low? (is currently on standard springs) I've been instructed 180b rear coils are worth trying, any other suggestions? With the Canterbury winter gloom only a few weeks away, I feel that might be all the driving she gets til spring, winter is Niva season!
