  2. So Manfield finishes up... And I'm enjoying doing superlap and the camaraderie between competitors. Buuut everything else in life was starting to feel a little stale. I have been daydreaming about moving to the South Island for the last few years, but I'm not a planner person... I figure if I wait until I have a plan, I will never do it. So I made a bold move - To just hand in 30 days notice at my IT Manager job, with no idea what I'm going to do next. I knew this meant sacrificing the remaining rounds of Superlap, and would probably lead to some hard times financially and otherwise. But it was just what I felt was necessary. All I knew was that I wanted to move out of Auckland for a while and start on a fresh page after some tough times over last year or two. A few days after this, I see an ad pop up on facebook... "Remote Dyno tutor/manager at HP Academy in Queenstown" Awww hell yes, could that be any more the ideal career/city change, at exactly the right time?! I applied for the job - and got it Then not long after, thanks to Bigfoot, I had some accommodation sorted too. It was the most low effort career/city change ever! Within the course of a week it went from my family probably thinking I was a bit of an idiot for quitting my job without a plan. (and a fair bit of doubting myself as well) to, "God damn it you're a jammy bastard Dave" To anyone who has along the way thought "David why not just take your car to a tuner instead of wasting your time doing all of these stupid tests/graphs/etc" Well, all of these things that I've done were a major contributing factor towards me getting the job. So there's probably some motivational message there about following your dreams or something. But end result is I'm pretty happy right now, and working at a company where drawing graphs and looking at datalogs etc is par for the course. Which is bloody exciting. So I packed my echo full of essential stuff and drove on down to start a new way of life down here. So far so good! Keeping some relevance to this thread though - My Carina is still back up in Auckland. It's packed full of "want but dont need" items, it's ready to hit the road as soon as I've organized a place down here that has a garage to store it in. I've been learning so much from Andre and the team, it feels like getting an apprenticeship from one of the best engine tuners in the southern hemisphere. I feel like I'm only just smart enough to be on the cusp of understanding some of the stuff Andre talks about. But I think I know just enough, that he doesnt feel like it's a waste of time explaining things to me. I expect that by the time I've got the Carina down here, I'll be ready to redo my tune from scratch using the new knowledge and tools now available to me. Cant wait! A new southern chapter of graphs, nerdiness, and awesomeness awaits the Carina. The next post in this thread, when the time comes. There will be graphs, oh yes, there will be graphs.

  3. Nearly done the transmission tunnel. This piece of the firewall has always annoyed me by how it isn't symmetrical, so cut it out and fixed that. Just need to do something with the little hole on either side where the tunnel, floor and firewall meet. Also built the fuel tank. Drew it up in Solidworks and then lasercut it. Added a couple of baffles that located and slotted into the top. Here it's fully welded, will give it a polish or something one day. The big flange is for the pump, the smaller one is for a sender unit and the small holes are for the return line and breather. I think it's just under 60 litres. Now to figure out how to mount it.

  5. Ass end is pretty much done! Well the hard parts any way. Full ridetech 4Link tacked in and Moser housing in place. Useing HQ 8000 series Shockwaves from Ridetech at the back. The mounting brackets have three height settings. All welded in and a quick coat of black. This is shown at the lowest height. once the skirts and rocker panels are on its going to look pretty good on the ground at this low height. Guess i will do a bit of a write up of whats going on gear wise back there. Whats in and still to be put in sitting in boxes. Talked about the Ridetech 4Link but im also using the before mentioned Shockwave airbags from the same brand. For those not in the know click here to check them out with all the fancy videos and marketing guff. Basically they are air bags that mount like a coil over but with air shocks with 26 tuneable rebound clicks. The company was great to deal with and extremely helpful. Another company who had exceptional service was Moser Engineering. Drag racing heritage & brand so built to withstand alot of abuse. the guys build and race the kit they build. Website here. Man i feel sorry for Brian Miles as he steered me through the process of ordering the custom 9′ rear end. A million emails, measurements, re-measurements latter we got it sorted. Bare classic looking Ford 9″ Housing made to my measurements. (2inch narrower than stock Hudson) Moser axles w/bearing package 5×4 bolt pattern with screw in studs. Moser perf nodular case. Trac Loc posi 31 spline. Nodular support. 1350 Pinion yoke – steel gearing at 3.50 fill & drain plugs. Wilwood breaks i will cover when i get to installing. Should last me well. So next step is taking it down off the rotisserie and sorting the front end. It will be back up on there a few more times yet i imagine

  6. Something we briefly talked about at some stage, is a trip out to the Mangahao Dams in Shannon. If we get a half decent number of people I may be able to get us access to the power station for a walk around and they have a museum of sorts there as well. Either way the three dams are all public access (can drive to them all, not slam friendly though) and I can teach you all about being a beaver/spin some yarns

  7. The last few trackday events I've done, they have all been on very hot tracks in summer time... lots of grip for R888s which were coming up to temperature nicely, very quickly! Thanks to all this grip I've had, I've been able to wind the brake bias heaaaapppssss more rearwards than I ever have been able to previously. Which is awesome, it stops the car up great. Then, the Manfield round of Superlap... I was greeted by an intially damp, very cold track. First run out, feeling a little too confident... by lap 3(?) I still had almost no heat in the tyres, was pushing it a little too hard, and the brake bias caught me out. I spun off turn 1, ending up stuck in the kitty litter which was embarassing, and I felt bad for delaying the session while I was towed out. I went back to the pits, took a few winds out of the brake bias (it isnt adjustable in the cabin) Second session, wowzers! Track came up to temp nicely and the car was running great. I was still getting familiar with things as I've never driven there before. But had an awesome time. I was driving conservatively as I didnt want to be "that guy" that crashes twice in a row haha. Feeling confident lining up for the third session of the day, and ready to push a bit harder. I get waved out onto the track and my driveshaft makes a clunk noise. Try go forward again... same thing... shit. I head back to the pits, and it looked as though the hanger bearing had crapped itself, so the centre of the 2 piece driveshaft was free to flop around. It felt okay to drive "normally" so I said my good byes to friends at the track and went back to accomodation (Thanks Lachlan) I packed the car up and started driving home. I got about an hour out of Manfield, and driveshaft noise was getting bad going up a hill when it was under load - Boom! The front UJ broke, and the driveshaft went smashing around in the tunnel like a MFer! Lucky I had driveshaft loops in place or it would have made a bloody big mess. Once I got safely to the side of the road, and had a look under the car. It dawned on me that I am 6-7 hours drive from home, with a car that's fucked haha. About 1/2 an hour later, something magic happened! Some other competitors saw my car on the side of the road, and stopped up. They couldnt really help, but wanted to see if they could assist. Then some more competitors came past - this time with their track car on the trailer behind tow vehicle. They stopped up, unloaded their track car from the trailer so they could tow my car home - and drive their track car instead. These guys lived near Hampton downs, but drove all of the way to Glendene in the pissing rain to help me get my car home by about 2am. Which meant they didnt get back to theirs until 3 or 4am after a very long day. Absolutely blown away by the help. Big thanks to Jakke and Matt for being awesome well beyond the call of duty. Sometimes when you're up to your eyeballs in shit, and someone helps you out - The sort of thing you remember for a very long time. Some good memories and good friends, made by a bad situation.

  14. So @Archetype lent me his trailer this arvo and I managed to drive the valiant under its own power onto its trailer. Was good. But the new house location is up on a hill....... got the trailer and two wagons stuck half way up kinda got to close to one side and bottomed out, couldn't move. Unloaded wagon there got trailer up the hill. Backed back down and towed the valiant up with out a trailer. Mate got brakes working and it running quite sweet just not great which is sweet as. And now it's sitting in my shed waiting for me to buy some steel and a couple of cutting disk and hire a gas bottle Watch this space. Got to have it going for the wedding in feb next year and now I have my own shed I can escape from Beth heaps now.

  19. The second set of 540cc injectors arrive over the weekend so I professionally cleaned them: Checked for sameness: Also used a multimeter to do a resistance check on all 8 ST215 injectors, they were all the same which is nice. Also the same as the old JZX100 injectors, not sure what this really proves... So I went ahead and installed them, checked for leaks and it started up first try, fckn yay. Idle'd perfectly fine, rev'd it a bit and saw a bit of black smoke which I was expecting. The battery had been disconnected for a few days which might explain why the AFR's were super rich at idle with 10.6:! But it then surprisingly sorted itself out, whether it was just cold start rich, I'm not sure but when it was warm it idled at around 14:1 which isn't much different to the standard 370cc's. Next was to test drive it to see what the AFR's did under low boost, but I then found a fuel leak from the rear. Which turned out to be the fuel tank o-ring which looks to have expanded so it doesn't sit right. Have now ordered a new genuine one, for fcking $51.11 11 cents!

  23. Nah, change of induction, if the cert plate didn't say carbs I would have changed years ago Once I rig the speeduino in it will be electric everything except induction, which is quite sad, I really should just suck up and re-cert, thinking bout it, tis probably cheaper than a set of jets..... Have speed input now, made more lines, timescale is still off, more like 1min over the entire range, more code to fix.... Long acceleration in 3rd, red is engine speed, (not calibrated ~ 5000rpm at full scale) green is AFR, blue throttle, the blip in mixture as the engine speed rises is interesting, few ideas, need to confirm, cool having the different inputs to give clues to the reasons. 50-60kph cruise is bang on, quite happy with that, not that you get to drive that steady in chch much!

  28. Finished the last of the ply yesterday and screwed the rest off, can't see this house moving much in a quake, so many layers.. Paints all finished thanks again to family, then I fucked around in the afternoon clearing everything for the sander, Fillets came up great, I then had a crack at the bathroom vanity, Cut a hole.. goddam oaks hard, chewed a blade or half way through. Also smells remarkably similar to Rimu which also fucks metal things.. Trial fit, had to enlarge the hole slightly with a 40g flap disc still just burns it off.. Two more hole for the taps, And voilà.. not to shabby, Just need to adjust the drawers somewhat.. Sanded the top back a bit as it was a little messy and the two halves of the top didn't really line up properly, not sure whether to oil it or put it back like it was. Checked on the floor sanding progress today, guy doesn't fuck around.. floors all leveled with the filler on already.. also bought some carpet this evening, shit isn't cheap, 6k between the floors and carpet! Should look ok tho..

  31. Where was I... Fillets, Floor came up okish.. Bought a kitchen, got fed up with looking at shit that was a mission to change/adapt to my kitchen. Its Chinese with German hinges.. 3.5k Put it together and semi installed in on Sat/sun and discovered they forgot to give me a bit.. That's better, Drilled some light holes, fucked one up but it was at 12am Tuesday morning so it's ok.. Crawling round in the ceilings a bit of a cunt, glad I'm not doing the insulation, Oh, and I spy with my brown eye.. Christened this one already, felt good.. Still not a fan of those taps as they're too new looking, would've preferred the ones I missed on the tard for a fiver.. getting closer and closer..was gonna get my mate to laminate my bench for me but I just found untreated 45mm laminate ply for $140 a sheet.. would be good for a temporary bench, see how the money goes.

  34. Well... at least having carbs means you get to generate pretty patterns It is a shame that re-cert costs the full whack, so I believe, even if it's just one thing that's been changed. That was my one gripe and issue I raised when the lvvta did their survey a while back.

  39. When I had no access to a slide hammer I just used some chain around the axle flange and got a decent run up, it was just as easy as using a slide hammer. Rope is no good, you need something that will transfer a shock load directly to the axle. Using the brake drum is usually no good if they are in tight as you need more distance to build up enough momentum.

  40. We'll dig as deep as need be. She's a dry carpet model. And despite being rusty now, ten years ago it was completely rust free. The cancer doesn't run that deep. I've met your mate. That business caters to cheque book builders. It's no more rusty than you'd expect for a car of this age that has spent 20 of the last 47 years out in the weather. ......

  43. tell ya, its been nice having this back on the ground, its been some time. Would seem on the test drive most of the stuff I went to sort out with the gearbox is all takin care of, shifts good, no clutch shudder etc Super nice having the dash all back together too. Given long weekend it seemed like the best opportunity to get this into work and on a hoist. Main goal was just to complete the exhaust, which after a few convos with my work mates, convinced me going under diff would be the best option as A) easy. B ) actually fuck all of fuck all room on top of the diff Personally I hate under diff exhaust, but I will let it fly on this one, as I truely am not sure I could have made an over diff work. SO yeah, besides a few simple things, which off the top of my head is put a second set of nuts on top of the front struts, then this should be cert ready. I know it will need a wheel alignment for the cert, but going to leave this till i know everything is good under there. So, current plan is call up tomorrow and book it in, probably for next week, think he is usally over this way on a Thrusday, so a week and a few days. Anyway, none exciting pics IMG_5549 by Allan Ainsworth, on Flickr IMG_5587 by Allan Ainsworth, on Flickr IMG_5586 by Allan Ainsworth, on Flickr IMG_5588 by Allan Ainsworth, on Flickr

  44. I also am too cheap to spend $8 per pin for the door hinges so machined some high tensile bolts to the right length and diameter and grooved them to take a tiny c-clip. Then heated them up really hot and dipped into waste oil to blacken em. No idea how well this will last or protect from rust but YOLO it was cheap.

  45. Now that some of the old crap is off the rear its time to start the cutting and welding madness! God damn but i am excited! So as you can gather from the above posts the springs etc have all been ripped on out. I chose a RideTech Triangulated 4Link to take its place. Must say im happy with the product. 5.6mm(0.219inch) wall thickness tubing and 4.8mm(0.188inch) laser CNC brackets – included is brackets for the shockwaves. It just feels sturdy and built right. Ridetech sales reps are great to deal with and more than happy to go over everything making sure the right product was ordered for the car, weight, ride height and driving style. I chose triangulated for a few reasons. One being no panhard being needed to free up room with luck for the exhaust as not much room under the Hudson for two pipes. Another was i could get tighter wheel to fender clearances due to less or no side to side play compared to a parallel 4link. They should give a much better ride quality than springs whilst being able to cope with rising and lowing the car better as well with bags. Anyway a refresher of how it was once the big stuff at back was stripped off: Below you can see the old brace and spring mounts. Flockie dealt to these. And then fabricated a Hudson bracket kit & pipe support to replace original chassis brace for each side. Good thick 5mm plating. Welded the four brackets to the car along with the ride tech one. Everything is rust killed and sealed up under the plates. With bottom bar attached. Bottom bar & mount. Right hand side bottom bar done. Left hand side bottom bar. And done! Bottom two bars attached to car via with some nice brackets. Next is notching the chassis to allow diff, rising the unscraped section of trunk floor a bit and attaching the top triangulated bars. Flockie just sees the gear and the car, visualizes so quickly how it will go together, quick glance at the NZ certification rule book to make sure its good then attacks it.

  46. I put a China copy muffler (frowmaster? ) on te ute to shut it up, it was a bit droney. I ran out of pipe to make a tip but found a driveshaft under the house that is now an exhaust tip. One thing I have found useful when doing exhausts is some hi temp pot belly black paint from bunnings, cheaper than rattle cans and it lasts well

  47. Putting the wife through fertility treatment so money has been tighter than usual but managing to do cheap shit occasionally. I removed the bent grille in top center of the dash (is it for a single speaker?) Sent some bits off for gold zinc plating Drilled some holes in my fuel tank mounting frame as it's way too sturdy/heavy. Will get this gold zinc plated too Also did some trading and bought some fiberglass front guards (need to get these north from invers somehow!) And also a fiberglass nosecone that was made locally.

  49. It's been a month where I felt like I tried really hard, but got almost nothing done. Things got done for certain, but they're hard to see. What you probably can see now is the rocky face that I'm going to chisel into stairs. I have no idea how that particular endeavour is going to work out.... but I'd wager badly. Very badly. Oh well. At least it'll be really hard and a waste of time.
