  3. Today I made good use of nothing to do and pulled the gearbox off to see what disaster awaited me. What I came upon wasn't pleasant. Those with weak stomachs dare not read on. This is what fell out as I separated the gearbox from the block: The remains in the bellhousing: Then I went back under the car to have a look at the pressure plate and remove that behemoth of an assembly. This is what awaited: I was not expecting that, and can't say I've seen that before. It must have been one hell of a party in there (which I funded by the way). The total sum of the destruction: Luckily no damage was done to any other parts so I can just put on the new flywheel and clutch kit and hopefully carry on with skids. I don't like to end on a down note, so here is a stance picture: Phwoar.

  5. So I've had a bit of a nerd-on regarding fuel economy etc recently, Was reading about that guy that whale tailed his civic (which looks utterly rediculous) However he now gets 2.8l per 100km What the fuck!! I didnt even think that it would be possible to improve by that much. I want to keep this car looking standard, but there's some low hanging fruit in the aero department because the front of a the car, from underneath, is a frigging mess. Gonna have some side sections sealing off radiator entry so it uses the fan less. Then try get a flat tray underneath the front of the radiator area and a short distance behind it too. Might be worth a few KPH at the far end of the straight at Hampton. Found this cool excel sheet, will give this a go before and after and see if there's any difference. Not expecting miracles but I do think there will be at least some quantifiable change for the better by attempting reducing drag a little. If not, as usual, will chuck it in the bin. www.iwilltry.org/b/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Drag_Coefficient.xls Made a start on some side panels for radiator, just corflute for starters. Will check with pressure sensor for before/after and see if it makes any difference. "When you've got carbon fibre taste, but a real estate sign budget"

  7. My weekend job was to remove the old carpet as it was stuck directly to the metal floor...bloody noisy! Bought an xtreme pack of Dynomat sound deadener, new underlay and a new carpet. This is great stuff an made a considerable difference.

  9. so i bought this from mega GC Tim off of here, when it popped up cheap i had to snap it up -jap import -1800 8v (G60?) -auto -boat spec body is fairly straight, little bit of rust creeping underneath the windscreen, and some poor attempts at rust repairs on the rear hatch. the engine performs okay considering its size and spec, however it leaks oil out the engine/crankcase breather? i assume built up pressure in the crank, or a line somewhere is blocked. if anyone knows more info on these and how to remedy would love to hear. plans are to give it a well needed cut and polish, give the springs a bosch haircut, fellow golf foamers let me know your thoughts on suitable adjustable suspension for these. from what ive seen Raceland ones seem to be pretty good. acquire wide 13s from japans and perhaps a manwell box later on. inspiration

  11. It's not for saving money so much as for interests sake and learning something new. Or, learning about the theory of things, but then seeing how the theory holds up with some practical tests. It's also about being smug, that's my real main hobby. The best way to save money with this car would be to put it in a crusher haha. I'm done with the idea of driving old or high km cars as a daily though. My next car wont be something so Echo-ey but will aim for something around the 30 thou kms mark again. Not a single dollar or hour spent on problems for that car, in ~60,000kms driven so far. That's beaten any previous vehicle I've owned by several magnitudes haha. 2GRs are coming down in price...

  15. a old friend of mine back in high school had one of these, the same colour. funny if it was the same one. I remember noticing the engine was pretty much a water cooled beetle engine, even the same clip on valve covers. keep at it man!

  16. Spent some time liberating the rear screen from the green turd yesterday. I suspect the green one was a low spec model compared to the orange GSR as it doesn't have rear demister. Spent a bit of time with some window cleaner and a razor blade to remove the lichen and funk. Perfect. And so the green one was parked in an open yard next to SH3 since the year 2000 it would seem. Subsequently anything easily removed like lights, trim and badges has been. Funnily enough, this pair of badges don't appear to be worth stealing. May order some window rubber I think matches from Basis' selection this week if credit card says yes. Tell me stuff about window demister kits and tetanus here. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/22150-waimaks-gsr/page-19

  17. Abit of an update since its been 6months.Life has changed a tad for me now with having a baby on the way. The crowns have had to take a back seat as i renovate the house and get baby things, but it is a boy!!! so i may need to order a small tig torch so he can help dad finish his cars.I have been hording more bits, manged to score complete front and rear disc brakes off a ms112,it came with brake booster/cylinder and powersteer setup too, unsure if i should run it yet tho. Also have load adjusting shocks on the way for the front, should calm the whale down.Managed to get that factory black hood lining up,30mins in the sun to soften and work quickly to stretch it into place.so now the interior is all factory black and should be rolling in Japanese mafia spec fashion when its all done.have sussed a shorter shifter position and notched sump (from MATTTS crown) as the jz was too far foward,so when all the bits are here i can finally mount the thing. oh and the wagon, thats just awaiting its turn,i am on a hunt to find parts, proving to be a challenge.all i have scored is a 'custom' badge

  22. Hello online mechanic friends.. Wonder if anyone has come across this problem before, and if so - what was done to resolve. Car: 1996 Rav4 Transmission: Automatic Problem: When turning left there is a thud/donk/knock noise coming from the left rear side (from what it feels like from the drivers seat). It's a rotational sound, it's not at random. Also when travelling faster than 80kms there is a slight shudder coming from the rear diff but as soon as I take my foot off the accelerator the wobble disppears. What I have done: Replaced the diff oil with proper AWD diff oil supplied by Toyota - No change. I can see by looking underneath that the rear diff mount has been replaced at some stage. If you were to hazard a guess, what do you guys/gals think? Clearly a blown head gasket eh?

  24. Oh btw- this is your wagon when it was at base Woodbourne... I took these photos when I was there collecting the Mazda Eunos I bought for the first V6 engine. I was quite smitten with the trump. I am glad its been saved and has ended up in the oldschool family. Its not too dissimilar to our S wagon we had in Blighty..

  29. Yeah something like a DC2 would probably be a better shape to start with, and still reasonably light etc. Variable valve timing engines can alter cam timing to make it work like internal EGR, intentionally sucking some of the exhaust gas back into the cylinder before combustion. I think it improves economy by reducing pumping losses? But that's why most modern engines dont have EGR pumps etc anymore, thank christ.

  30. You cant compare the modern cars, they get so much better all the time and the rules are constantly making changes to reduce the aero so the racing stays exciting (the wings have shrink shit loads). The modern cars could do insane shit with more/different wing, the rules opened up for under-body shit, exhaust in the rear wing and all that jazz. Fan car FTW though.

  31. Pretty much anything in F1 that gets banned, is usually awesome haha. The fan car was cool but I'd say a modern F1 car would make way more downforce anyway. Although its a bit of a laugh that the fan car pretty much looks like a big rectangle box, compared to having a zillion ugly winglets diverting every little tuft of air.

  32. Thought I had pretty prove that progress is actually getting made here. The following photos are the before and after of the last patch repaired on the body. Which was around the boot lip, quite cunty areas to repair and most corners being made from multiple steel patches. Being hidden I was a bit on the rough side here but it will be functional and not rusty and leaky. Welded Who am I kidding? I'll end up cleaning that up more.

  33. Time for the car to go for a ride. Picked up from the panel shop, off to go on a wheel alignment machine and then to A1 exhausts to get the chassis work done I forgot to take any photos from the wheel alignment. Amazingly the car was pretty close. The cross member will have to be rotated slightly to give 2 Degrees of castor. There is probably more than enough adjustment in the shims to sort it out but I want to get it as close as possible. Also got my wheels back from being powder coated. I had put the other 3 away so that is why there is only one.

  37. i know this car, i tried and failed to set up a buy for Yoeddynz. i got bored one afternoon and tried to start it but it had no fuel. got it turning over though. im interested in the story of it being hauled out of the depths of the woodbourne engineering club. it had a damn near full spare car piled in the back!

  38. Here is a photo of a not so jacked gloria wagon. 50mm blocks in the back and kawasaki special springs up front. sills are pretty much spot on level but looks whack as front guard opening is so big. would like the front a touch lower at some point but this will do for now. Next is wheels, either 15s or 16s to help fill the guards. not much room in the back so wont be anything cray cray //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/41006-beavers-87-gloria-wagon/page-6

  40. On Sunday I was all keen to run a surge tank etc, then I measured up where it would go and how much fuel line I would need to buy, at about 8 Meters of EFI fuel line I concluded fuck that, am just going to run an inline pump and see what happens, can re-asses later on if I find I'm getting surge while swinging O's

  46. Discuss here -//oldschool.co.nz/index.php?showtopic=47657 Hey Boes So some of you might have seen this when i posted it in the "Left to rot" thread, well I have acquired it and after I pick it up on easter weekend it will start undergoing the reversal of the rotting process, I just really want to prevent it from completely disappearing into the ground. Some of you may give me copious amounts of shit for taking this on as it is very very rusty, but at the end of the day it owes me very little, is a genuine mk2 1600 sport with plates dead but still in the system, and the fact that these are getting very very thin on the ground now. I have a mig, panel steel, access to donor escorts, a father in law who has been building escort rally cars for the last 30 years and most importantly, a wife that loves mk2 sports (because going up with a co driving in). So yea this is going to be a pretty slow build as finances are being directed to honeymooning and house renovations, but luckily there is a whole butt tonne of work to go into this that will require much more time than money. Thank god for palmside and their aftermarket panels anyway. Plans may change but at this stage it is restore body, worked zetec conversion on twin 45's or bike carbs running Nodiz ignition, undecided at the mo but possibly forest flares with wide arse 13" rims, build for fast road so it can be fanged on hillclimbs and clubsport events as well as being fanged to the dairy. Anyway what you all want to see, some pictures of a rusty arse escort.....
