  1. really went to town on the tank/old oil can. chop, fit, solder, smack repeatedly with things to 'adjust fit', leaks like a shower rose, of course. one more attempt at soldering leaks up then it goes in the bin. driveline coming together, had plenty stuffing round with the clutch which is on the other side. coming in just over 20kg as it sits.

  7. it was, now its been raining for 3 months its all fucking mud Got some wood to line the wall from the plyguy. was pretty cheap. mostly cosmetic seconds. done about 75% of this end. Just need another stud to attach it to, and wire up the switchboard. and find my motorvation. i left it out in the rain somewhere? also partially built some shelves. it was easy cos the wall was half my shelves already built. couple lengths of 4x2 and some other random offcuts, plus some more seconds ply to line them. They are 700mm apart so im thinking of making some levels in between the current ones starting to fill up...

  8. New bumper support ordered from Toyota, cheers Mark! I ended up buying two in the end because stocks are running low. Now I can emulate those foamers who throw brand new parts into the attic and forget all about them for 30 years. (Then some other guy comes along, buys it all for cheap in an estate sale and posts about it on Facebook.) P/N 52021 in the above image. You can also see the dumb foam insert (i.e. water trap) that's sandwiched between the bumper support and bumper cover. Also dug around in the shed and found all of the spare refurbished retaining rails (P/N 52521, 52522, 52525, 52535, 52536) left over from when I did the rustwork on the last AW11 and sent a heap of things away for blasting and re-coating. Knew those would come in handy one day... Discuss: http://oldschool.co....1-sc-chit-chat/

  14. E throttle is all good, my coon is now tuned to drop throttle % to prevent impending transmission doom when the trans is cold or on high torque shifts. Its not quite active enough to drop wheelspin like the traction control probably should but at least its not all soft like the OEM ignition cut for tcl which makes it feel like someone turned the key off. Also look up sprint booster for options around external control for OEM e throttle setups to make more or less aggressive.

  17. My thought was in the animators mind the low density air retained momentum until it hit the valve so built up to atmospheric pressure fron the valve end. Or it was easier to animate it that way.

  20. *******WARNING******* This post contains coarse language Despite all consuming thoughts I've been having to burn this shit heap thing to the ground I've been making some progress. The last two months have had thier up n downs with this. Not long after my last post i decided to pull the pin on this 1g and bought another low kms one off a member and another gc brought it up here from duniden. CBF touching it / wasting time / spending more money on another 1g i decided to just leave it and chuck it straight in as is. In it goes. now is about the time i realise there are a few subtle differences between the 1ge and 1geu. like this; and this; and some plugs and the oxygen sensors etc also i discover this. Whatever, thats fine :/ Now with that shit all sorted and everything plumbed up etc ..... its time to fire it up again right? wrong. Some scumy fuck has stolen my petrol. Again!!! Whatever, got more petrol the next day and fire it up. It ran good for a minute or so then starts missing really bad and wont idle, i can hold about 5k revs on it and it sounds ok. So i take it around the block to blow it out and it dies and wont start again After looking around for a problem i discover the back of the oil cap has gone all milky looking. WTF No. Not this shit again. The curse of the 1g Threw my toys, pack shit up and give up for the day. Under closer inspection the oil seems to smell a lot like petrol. Hmmm?? As it turns out, lots of fuel in your oil makes it look a lot like it does when there is water in it! who knew..... not me. So why the hell is it putting so dam much fuel into the engine??? I then discover the fuel return line is completely blocked and the pressure is getting so great that there is fuel squirting out past the hose clamps on the rubber lines. AH HA, that will be the cause of the issue! NOPE! did not fix the problem. Different oxygen sensors? nope The coils are different. is it the coils? nah! I checked the resistance of the 1ge injectors and they are slightly different to the other 1geu ones. So i changed them over aaaaaand it made no difference. God dam it! What else? a bung temp sensor? swapped and tested all the temp sensors. Not that! Removed and checked the cold start injector. That is fine. That only leaves two things, the ECU or the airflow meter. Now i have no way of testing either of these so i give up for a couple weeks. Which brings us to today. I took the AFM off to take and compare to my 1ggeu one and maybe try that in there. That's when i realize that the fucking flap inside it is stuck at about 3/4 of the way open! Well that will sure as hell cause a shit load of fuel to be injected unnecessarily won't it!! Nasty Its now that i realize there was possibly not much wrong with the last engine i just took out, and the fact that the compression tested good amplifies the fact that it was just doing the same dam thing this has been doing. Anyway! i put the afm back together after I regreased the rusty bearing and gave it a good clean up. Start it up and WOOOOOOO success!! it idles and revs smoothly. Finally! So i take it for a hoon around the block and it dies. Out of fuel. Who the fuck is stealing my petrol!! I feel actually feel sorry for people who are scummy enough to have to steal peoples fuel. The price of meth must be going up or something. So with all that behind me i can now make some dam progress!

  22. Wow- after a bit of digging about through her old photos my mum finally found some of our old 120y wagon from back in the late 70s/early 80s. What I was after was confirmation that the car for sale on the oldschool classifieds area.... http://oldschool.co.nz/2011/forum/index.php?/topic/49659-fs-datsun-120y-wagon-nelson/ Mum phoned me this morning with good news. Yes!!! it is indeed our old car. Damn this is cool news!!! I have spoken to Dave's (avenger tiger) boss and its still up for grabs so I have said I'll take it away Mum and Dad are very excited about the prospect of getting their old car back. Mum has been talking about getting a Morris Minor Traveller like they had before the Datsun but they are too expensive. Getting their Datsun on the road for them would be awesome. Luckily it sounds like I might be able to get the old original engine back as well. Its currently in a Suzuki 4wd but the owner wants something else to power it. So this will be good if I can secure its original heart. Anyway- I'm so excited. I should be in the workshop right now welding my Viva wagon but I couldn't help but start a thread even though I don't yet have the car. I am under no illusions that it will be an easy resto. It will be rusty like Ive not seen before. But I don't mind that. Hopefully if I need any parts there should be enough bits floating about in NZ on the vibrant datsun nz forum. Another choice thing is that because mum has photos of it with the plates visible hopefully I can apply to reuse the old plates when it come to the re-vinning process. So here are some cool photos. All taken in the late 70s or early 80s. This is up the Westbank road when we used to go visit this mad old farmer/recluse fella. He would hang weird things about in trees if I remember correctly and thats what we are looking at. This is me and my brothers and sister in the boot along with Bella the smelly old Lab and Pipi the cat (who lived to be 19 years old!). I'm the little fella sitting on the back seat on the right in the white collared top. Here's the two family wagons. My Dad was very proud of his Mk4 Zodiac wag that he brought over with him from the UK. It was always giving troubles whilst the Datsun just purred through life. Dad never bought another english car again and we ended up with two more Datsuns after the 120Y. Mum and Dad did buy my first Triumph off me when I left for me 10 year OE and they loved that old car. But that's because Triumphs are bloody awesome too. Finally here is a photo of a Family reunion at Woodend. It was my Mums family and this was the mens beauty contest. The little Hillman Superminx wagon next to the 120y was my cousins and that was a cool car too. I think my cousin Helen ended up crashing it Here it sits in its current condition.. Discuss Here

  23. WHERE: Smales Farm, Auckland WHEN: 10am till 1pm. WHAT TO BRING: All cars are welcome. This has proved to be a popular event and there can often be over 300 cars in attendance. Everything from V8's to Rotaries. Hot Rods to Vintage. Euro to Japanese. Everything. What tends to happen now, is that most people show up by 9:30 if you want a spot in the front car park, as this is usually pretty full by 10:00am, although with an average of over 300 cars a month now, parking in the back car park is usually sweet, as this is often pretty full too. It also makes it easier for groups to park together. It is not unusual for people to cruise to a local eatery afterwards.

  25. Ute tray wof question. I have a B1600 with a wellside but with rust in/through floor and inner guards, the sides and tailgate are fine. Looking at cutting out the floor and inner guards and welding in some new inner guards. I understand the rear wheels need to be covered but will i get a wof with no tray floor? Meaning diff/chassis/fuel tank and tray structure will be exposed.

  27. So basically this month it's a double header. Coffee & Cars will be in the normal car park. In the Vodafone car park there will be the heritage thing. This should be a fun Sunday and if you have not attended before this would be a good one to cruise along too.

I guess this means you should be thankful then that they were so misinformed that you didn't get repeated fines for no front bumper, I recall you saying that the cop didn't know shit when he gave you a fine for not having a bumper and you saying there wasn't anything illegal about it, I'd just say your lucky

  34. Been a while since I did anything on this, but the boulder bashing, mud chucking daily has been very needy (I think it misses the attention) and would be nice if it stayed together for more than a couple weeks. So I wasn't happy with that panel as the steel I used was a bit thin. So I cut it out and started again. Unfortunately I was on a roll and forgot to take pictures But here's the end result Then I cut out the loom hole and panelled that in I did it again and got no photos dammit aaand that's about it. I found a small bit of rust in the right side sill, right in underneath. But I haven't grown the balls to tackle that yet Also, still looking for a mk5 radiator so I can modify the mounts before I paint the engine bay... Cheers

  35. Did some photoshopping of the wheel colours, drip rails and window frames to see which ones I liked the best. Still no idea which I prefer. Open to suggestions. Also how would I go about lowering it another 30-40mm? It already has cobra springs which I think are just lows. Cut or compress them a bit with shorter shocks? Or get some superlows? Adjustable coilovers are out of my budget atm. Discussion: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/48889-matts-81-kp60-starlet-discussion/

  37. Sorry 20% negative offset so like 20% of total wheel width. And the crown has a fairly narrow diff already and flares get me going when done tastefully like sheepers crown which I have read about 5 times in this last week thinking of how much of a God he is doing 2 things I want to do to my car with the r32 irs in the ra28 and bagged crown. But could his chassis modification bar the notching have been solved by running more negative offset 9s with same dish. As his ten don't appear to have the 6-6.5 inch lips that he would have with minus 50 that he could legally run. I'm not sure what tyres he's running but Im guessing they aren't legal.

  41. possibly a hijack.? ive got no idea on velobikes 'rules' but has anyone tried a petrol generator running an electric motor? my mates dad used to have one of these flymos, tied a rope to the handle and dangled it down his super steep back section to mow where he couldnt push a wheeled one. they only sucked dragging them round when not running lol.

  42. Not much to report but any progress is good progress. Replacement gearbox is in, it probably would have taken longer but I had to move the car out of the shed I was renting cos the new owners wanted it empty. Once back in my own garage I had access to such luxuries as light and powerpoints and after much use of light and powerpoints I had my exhaust back together with extra clearance over the diff and a couple of flanges thrown in. I put some tyres on the rims and had a test fit, pretty good fit with the 8's, the 9's stick out an inch further due to offset so some work required. Incoming potato pics And because I can't stop fiddling with things I have plans to modify the cooling and charging areas. On the cooling side I am going to ditch the engine fan and fit a Volvo 2 speed unit. While at PaP I grabbed a dual thermo switch from a BMW which should have the temp settings I need to have it working properly with the thermostat. An inline housing for the switch is on its way, after a slight mod (tapping it to fit the BMW switch thread) it'll be usable. As far as the shroud, I'll probably fibreglass one up to suit. For charging I have an RB alternator to replace the stock externally regulated item. The wiring is pretty simple, may need a diode on the field circuit and the pulleys will need to be changed too. In less interesting news it also has a full complement of new balljoints in it, woooo

  43. I see pros and cons for the idea. If it was a real good bunch of mates it would work best. If I was involved I would have to trust all the others. But then like the others on here I would only really be interested if I got access to big equipment that I just can't fit - hoist, lathes etc. Personal experience tells me it was hard enough having to manage a workshop with staff who were being paid to use the supplied tools. but even then (and I am sure others who have worked in a workshop or own rental properties will attest) some people just don't give a shit about other peoples things or milk privelages to the maxxx. Common issues; Shit gets broken and no one owns up Shit gets left in a mess People "borrow" stuff that never shows up again People hog time at certain things to do work for everyone else (perkies for their mates.) As I am writing this I am convincing myself it won't work without the right people. As I said before the difference between supplied tools, paid to use them and supplied tools paying to use them is going to lend people to have some sense of entitlement to do more with them for longer.

  44. Have a look at "men's sheds " or the "sheedies". They are not uncommon, but have age restrictions , ie over 50 yo . I'm trying to get my dad to join one so he can go use the lathes and mills for me. As some one else mentioned most people that automotive is a job or a hobby Wil have most of what the need and will have sorted access to space when needed. It's the big things like lathes, mills,, welders, pipe benders and spray booths. The next level up equipment that only those with space and cash tend to have .

The plan was to get it rolling, then remove the engine to tidy it up, and paint everything But I've run in to another problem.. It's got tiny calipers! WTF What were these people thinking! Went to fit the new pads and uh ho so anyone got a pair of M16 calipers floating around? any condition Cheers all for looking
