  1. Well, that didn't take long. Not my finest moment. Had a stretch of two lane blacktop infront of me, completely clear. Gave it a squirt to the top end of second. Apparently it goes pretty fast at the top end of second. The officer was a really nice bloke, had a good chat after we'd done the business.

  2. So I'm about to persue in making a slam trailer mk2 which will most likely be a slower project then my last one since I'm now on apprentice wages. Plans are to air bag the trailer for easy access of bikes and things off the back. Haven't quite come up with how I'm going to bag it yet wether I go for custom A arms or just a big pivoting arm of some style. Want it to look real dope behind my c10 chev. Bought some guards off shakotoms dad with a part trade for some Toyota plate surrounds for his hot sister. And some Cadillac 15 inch wires from zebra dudes smashed up Seville

  3. Well I've had a pretty damn good morning. Changed the oil, topped up all the fluids and set off for a test. Hit up Repco and got myself an accessory USB socket to charge my dead phone, just in case I needed it, and a fire extinguisher, for a similar reason. Car was pretty smokey, and had a bit of oil to burn off the turbos/manifold too. It wasn't running overly well. Would stutter, miss and backfire if you gave it even the slightest amount of jandal, so I was anticipating having to get home and rip into it again... But I stuck with it, and took it for a drive along some back roads where I could open it up a bit... After a few backfires and misses, it cleared its lungs, inhaled a bunch of air and FUCKING WENT NUTS! I had to remind myself that the motor is pretty fresh, so I didn't give it all the beans, but holy hell does the thing shift. Feels like the fastest car in the world to me at the moment, but that's because I'm sitting on cloud nine seven. After that clear out session, it seems to drive really really well. No farting or missing when tootling around town, just drives really well. The idle is a little high, and not completely smooth, but I suspect that's just going to involve setting up the throttlebody correctly, which I can now do, as I can get it up to operating temp. Going to give it a much needed wash now, get some rego for it, pay the insurance and head off for a longer test-drive . Grins ear to ear.

  4. Brake booster failed a while back, still Driveable but was hunting for something else to rebuild while driving, then discovered the warrant was out so parked it, sent booster to safe-r-brakes and she came back mint! 2 day turnaround, not badly priced. Then clean sheeted a warrant today, so much wrapt. BRING ON HANMER!

  7. i have been plugging away at bits and pieces on this, and last weekend cleared two! engines from my tiny shed with the help of EURON8 - the 125s 1608 and 4 speed box, and the croma turbo engine which was on the engine stand. Now there is way more room to move (some room to move!) We also tried to fire the engine up as id run out of things to take off, and put back on but only got a few mild coughs - the oil pressure light did go out from cranking so thats good (pump is not broken from dent in sump) So i think no-start condition is a combo of - the fuel being a bit stale (i drained the 2300 tank into the mower can which was being gravity fed into the fuel pump), so have some fresh 98 to try (hoping its old gas!). - maybe low compression - will borrow my neighbours compresion tester to see about that, and - Also the voltage at the coil was a couple volts lower than the battery so may jumper that too, but sparks looked good and blue. I also closed up the last bits on the front corner just before as the Wellington parts car was going to be no help here. (ive already done about 6 much simpler patches on the wing and front valance which you can just make out) Quite satisfying making these complex bits and getting them to fit given my tools are one small vice, some hammers and gilbow shears, and the all important cereal box for CAD. only 992 holes to go.

  9. Iv stated wiring up the engine, so hopefully will have it running soon. I have a question though... The engine is out of a CBF125 (fuel injected), on the bike the fuel tank was directly above the engine. On the go kart the fuel tank is in the tail about the same level as the engine. Does anyone know if the pump of the bike will handle pumping the fuel through 1.5m of pipe that will be a tiny bit up hill? Cheers I put the new road tires on the other week...

  15. So I've been looking for a hako for about 4 years now, keeping an eye on the prices and how quickly they seem to be appreciating in price as the world notices them (thanks RM Sotheby's) and with some hard saving I've been able to finally make a purchase. The car is a 1971 2000GT with L20 engine and 5 speed. Unknown ks, bit of rust around the place (wouldn't be one without it) but overall a fairly solid start. I purchased this from Restored.jp who some may be familiar with, they make aftermarket FRP and carbon parts for old cars like that Hako. This was the owners personal car.. whether that's good or not is yet to be known but it's a nice story anyway. I'd be interested to have contact with other owners of Hakos in NZ as it would be handy for parts and general networking. I'll be working on this in stages (as I'm now broke) to get this up to road legal spec.. More to come but I've already figured a couple things I need to do before it's even here ! I understand there are several in NZ already, any coupes or road legal ones? Discuss: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/49704-mlracings-hakosuka/

  16. After years of steeling this from my father, a deal has been struck, and now the family vk is mine. It is a 1985 Holden HDT VK SS, has been in my family since 1992 and was the family car for many years before it got pushed to the back of the shed in about 1996 and left to sit, until about 2008 when I pulled it back out from the darkness. The rego had expired as dad didn't know he had to redo it every year, so after a revin, and replacing a few fuel related parts (don't leave your car full of gas for 12 years) and other bits and pieces that didn't like sitting for so long, it was all go again.

  28. Well this has been like downloading an entire season of my favourite telly series. I have had fuck all time to read the forum lately, so I've been catching up with bits and pieces as I can over the last day or two. I had the good fortune to be able to read this build thread from pretty much the point where you started diagnosing right through to now in one hit. It was the whole story in one compact 30 minute long read. I was worried that I was going to get to the end and you hadn't got around to trying to start it yet. Thankfullly when the video came into view I was very relieved. Top work on the methodical diagnostics Zac. I would have flipped all the tables and punched holes in all the walls well before now. OS really needs people like you to increase the average IQ count and I feel smarter just by reading the thread. Now you need to build a compression tester with that spark plug adapter and read via a smart phone app. Good motherfucking job man. You deserve a cold beer, shoe shine and back massage with a happy ending.

  31. I was trying it with a temporary set up regarding the fuel. And by temporary I mean really shit. I just had the fuel pump trying to suck fuel out of a bottle. The bottle was below the pump and it wouldn't suck the fuel through, the pump runs fine but I think it needs that gravity feed to get going. I haven't sorced a fuel tank yet so I don't know how low it will sit in the tail, but I suspect the lowest point of the tank will be lower than the pump... I'll add a picture in a couple of days, I'm away from home at the moment. Skinner, now everyone knows even my baby can grow more facial hair than me.

  32. it is always possible to adjust manually , it needs to be cause auto adjusters dont always adjust .... automatically , the 'baking' approach is average at best and is more suited to oil/brakefluid contaminated linings , good luck

  36. Once the rust work has been carried out next on the list will be finalising the driveline/suspension and steering setup. Items left to have all sorted: -Rear shocks sorted (getting some adjustable konis) -Sort and fit traction rods -Suspension and steering bushes -Driveshaft -RCA knuckles made up -Need to sort out and finish off the clutch setup (just need to sort the fork and get a new flywheel & bolts -Re-sleeve the brake master cylinder for better feel Once the above is sorted, the next bunch of work to look at is: -Sorting out a breather setup -Oil cooler lines plumbed -Engine wired up -Sort some HEL brake lines and bend up the bundy for the other lines -Finalise the handbrake lines -Get a battery -Sort side mount for the alternator Then lastly exhaust and she should be good to go, fire up and tune. I have another set of wheels on order so will have a much more aggressive look soon (will need to run some flares) and will need to look into gauges as well, cheapest option being VDO or Autometer but want to get something period looking so if anyone has any advice/ideas on how to go about it let me know here //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/44085-tai-scamps-mazda-1300/ Thanks for looking

  37. Ok time for an update.. After having on going disputes with the old shop over the last 4-5months I know have the ol' girl back and ready to get work commencing again. Safe to same I'm very relieved now that were cracking back on it to it but the issues aren't 100% sorted yet. So a few weeks ago this happened.. And now it's sitting here with this other familiar beast..

  39. dont think the soldering iron thing has actually been mentioned, but yes i agree. i picked up a nice adjustable iron from jaycar for pretty cheap and it worked very well. well worth it. another think that had been mentioned i think, was to make sure certain components are siliconed down so they don't vibrate and fail. the occilator is one of these, and i also siliconed any flying leads to prevent failure.

  40. I threw one together around 8 years back. I imagine everything has improved since then BUT I found the step by step instructions and process thoroughly enjoyable! Probably been mentioned many times but splash out on a GOOD digital soldering iron with replaceable tips - being able to set the temp properly is a wonderful thing. I had one issue only and that was that the stim unit came supplied with a 9v battery clip/lead which is useless.. Had a panic until proving it all worked on decent power supply.

  41. Decided to try and find out where this annoying rattle sound was coming from in the engine bay. At first I thought it was the water pump but was actually the tensioner bearing. So I replaced them both, along with a new cambelt. Also installed a thermostat as it didnt have one and the gauge struggled to move without one. All was going well driving this car daily till about a month ago. It developed (what I thought at the time) a strange miss The car would run fine and drive in a 50kmh zone ok. When I hit the motorway it would cut out, jerk and run like balls. Young Bigfoot came to my aide one night on SH1. So, I decided to replace items in the ignition system. I replaced the coil, dizzy cap, rotor, condensor, points, leads and spark plugs all with new items. Unfortunately this didnt fix it. I described the symptoms to my father and informed that the issue is fuel related. Carb off for a clean Tank out for a clean New (old) fuel filter from Dads parts stock Went to replace the fuel pump and as I removed the pump I found the spring that normally sits behind the lever arm sitting out of place Its fitted with a rare 2 piece spring Acquired a new fuel pump and installed it Drove it home for the first time since cleaning out the fuel system and it drives like a champ again! Happy days

  43. Awesome awesome awesome!!!! So glad for you Zac! Makes it so good that you have always wanted one of these. Now you have one and it appears to be a ripper! A bit of advice from me, being a rotary nutter for a while... I have heard from those in the know that a really good thing for these FDs is to take them on runs of say around 113km give or take a few K, including a few hills. This MUST be done on a friday or a saturday. For best effect at the end of august. Apparently the best type of run in NZ for these cars is this one.... https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Rangiora,+New+Zealand/Hanmer+Springs+Thermal+Pools+%26+Spa,+42+Amuri+Avenue,+Hanmer+Springs+7334,+New+Zealand/@-42.9226687,172.7321973,9z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x6d319488850974fd:0x500ef868479a700!2m2!1d172.5957246!2d-43.303356!1m5!1m1!1s0x6d3063827dd2db27:0xbe47f9b4237ac813!2m2!1d172.8282331!2d-42.5226141

  46. Mate, 8 year old down syndrome kids take the piss out of my hand writing.... I better not I have been thinking about the plaque and I still love the idea but I also want to put a monza style fuel cap on the back. The fuel tank will be in the tail. Will it be too much having a plaque and the fuel cap? If I have both I would make them both the same colour. What do you guys think? The only thing worse than my hand writing is my welding.... So I found this next part very difficult. Luckily I managed to hide most of the welds. The 4 to 1 collector is just mocked up, not welded yet. I might get a mate to do it as my nick name should be Dr spatter. I don't think my shitty little gasless mig helps the cause.

  47. Epic thread bump! Still havent really done anything further with this, hahaha. Have been a bit occupied with other stuff (blowing up carina, fixing carina, blowing up carina, fixing carina....) However! An MZ11 came up for sale, and we figure it might have some cool bits, or otherwise clips/trim/etc that is less than great on ours. So we went on a mission: If I had to use two words to describe the external condition of this car, they would probably be 'super fucked' heh. Mega rusty, most panels kicked in, roof kicked in! Sort of a bummer but it's a parts car so who cares Came with some cool stuff like headlight squirters, and we were missing one of the fibre optic light thingys you can see on top of the gaurd in this pic: And aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh yeeeeaaaaaaahhhhhhh about that rust. It looks like the car was parked up for rust reasons rather than mechanical ones, it's got a sweet looking 5MGE in it. Which might start up and be fine, but fuel pump has crapped itself. One thing though is that the interior is EXCELLENT. We will definitely be swapping all of this over into the other car. Not sure if I like the burgundy better than the blue, but the dash isnt cracked, and the (cream) carpet and seats are in amazing condition. Stoked! It's also got cruise control so we'll put that in as well, overcomplicated coupe life Some scumbag kicking panels in, ggrrr.... We've been looking for ages for a 3.7 ratio F series diff, which this has. So we're super chuffed about that! Will make for some sweet cruising rpms when running 15" wheels, with a lot smaller rolling diameter than JZX100 stuff. Either way, it's got me a bit more motivated to get stuck into working on the other car. I think the next thing on the menu is to pull the motor back out, tweak the engine positions slightly, then after that it's laregely panel, paint, reassembly. Cant wait to drive it again one day!
