  1. Hey wow so this happened IMG_5652 by Allan Ainsworth, on Flickr And then today this happened IMG_5651 by Allan Ainsworth, on Flickr So yeah........... getting there. not to bad of a list for a car thats been off the road for 2 years. Managed to replace the ball joint with a new one after work today, hopefully have a steering idler coming tomorrow if repcos listings are any near correct. Checked out the fuel leak, looks like the washer where the fitting goes out of the pump is junk, so need to replace that, which sounds easy, but is a cunty Mc cunt getting soaked in gas sort of job. And adjusting the hand brake while I'm under there should be a piece of custard square too hopefully. Wof on monday fingers crossed.

  3. Best Friday ever. The rain must of washed some of the dust off. I was barrying away in the garage and missed a call from a random number, guessed what it was for and wandered out the front to find this I was quite amused at the existing damage on the paperwork Grabbed the battery and it fired right up like a champ! It won't idle no matter the temperature. I ran it for about 5 mins and moved it out the back. Good news is my rangi radiator o ring replacement rtv gasket paper works perfectly, it showed half on the temp gauge but was boiling a bit. It is missing the radiator fan and probably needs a drill port & rebuild good bleed and flush. Both hoses were hot so it has thermostat opening and flow through the rad. I'll measure up the rad and have a look through zebra for a electric fan that I can make fit. Hopefully It has a thermo switch somewhere I can re purpose/use to trigger a relay. A quick list of stuff i need to do off the top of my head - wheel nuts - diff mount/cv nuts/driveshaft bolts to diff input - put a flexi in the exhaust and figure out the leak - air filer and figure out the idle situation - fan/bleed coolant etc - paint/sort the surface rust so it doesn't get worse - re run fuel pump wiring - spanner check everything before a wof - check/get all lights working for wof check -fail a wof and do a skid whats probably going to happen is the van will turn up and i'll be like a kid with too many toys and wont know what to do first

  4. Clint came round today to have a look at the car. After much looking he said mainly happy. The only thing that I got wrong is the mounts for the traction bars are too low by 10mm. They will hit the ground if a back tire goes flat. Not major, a bit of cut, shut and paint to fix. The other things are a gusset on the rebate in the front chassis where space was made to fit the top A arm and a strong back on the engine mounting plates, all easy stuff. Plugging away with other bits, fuel tank is mounted, still have to figure out the filler, brake pedal support is on the pedal box, some more holes in the floor welded up, UJ fitted to the steering rack. The list of stuff to do has got shorter, must be time for a new list.

  5. If you have no money then start reading and do it yourself, there isn't much too it if you follow the instructions, but beware that it is like physics, in that if you just know how to plug numbers into formulas, but don't really understand why, then you will have a much harder time making it work than if you spent a bit of time to learn what each thing actually does.

  6. Gents Well I need a little help. Im in Papatoetoe. I have two cars, both rusty, but in different places. I need to cut one of them up to salvage the good sections so I can repair the other I have a reciprocating saw, x2 grinders x3 ear muffs, safety glasses and a bunch of cut off discs. I also have an ability to cook food and chill drinks for those who can help me out. This will also please my wife greatly as we will no longer have a rusty old BMW in the drive way. Hoping that this will happen on Sunday afternoon 21th of May. weather dependent. If you can help it would be greatly appreciated.

  9. Well if I can make it, ill tell him to go fuck himself, I also live in his tranquil neighbourhood and have no issues with the club meets whatsoever. Perhaps he chooses to just ignore the far noisier motorway just feet away from the venue because it wont tolerate his bullshit. That might be inflamatory

  13. Finally home, 915.8k of trouble free vanning completed! I don't remember the last time I've had this much torque on tap, dunno how many of you know the Wharerata ranges between Nuhaka and Gisborne, but there's a few pretty decent hill climbs inc one big fucker that gets pretty steep, normally needing to chop down a gear or 3, this thing not only didn't chop down it held 100+ and would have easily accelerated I don't think it did too badly on the fuel, well in comparison to what the Mitsi would have done before it shat itself/I've got no diesel point of reference to compare it. Fielding-Palmy-Welly-Palmy = 505.4k using $65.98 (58.97L) in diesel giving 11.66l/100k or 24mpg, that included a lot of lurking around Wellington/Lower hutt and some decent hills. Palmy-Hawkes Bay-Gisborne via the scenic route and giving it a bit of stick on the hills closer to home = 408.2k, $53.20 (51.20L) giving 12.54l/100k or 22.5mpg. Even factoring in RUCs that seems like a cheap weekend away to me ha. And since pic-less updates suck, I found @JoKer's factory

  14. It looked better before I welded it.. I need more practice clearly but it'll do. Two resos in the middle make it a tad heavy, it's fairly balanced as the Hangers are in the middle so well see how they last. Part way through the muffler

  17. Take out all the plugs, bang some auto trans fluid in there, soak overnight Breaker bar on the crank and turn it over by hand a few times. Drain the sump and use fresh oil If you pull the plugs and the engine is totally full of water then well it's gona be bad

  18. Pull out the spark plugs and spray some oil/penetrating oil down into the cylinders. Give the starter a flick every day for a week or so and it should come free.

  20. Little update for anyone interested in the life of a boring van haha Since I've had it the HiAce had been using a touch of oil, think it was close to 2l since January, some can be easily explained by the cam cover gasket/grey goo leaking down the back of the head but it was deff getting a bit of blowby or similar as it was using noticeably more climbing hills/towing heavy loads. Anyway I did the first service since I've owned it last week (it had been serviced less than 1000k before I got it), drained something really thin feeling (5w30 maybe?) and filled it with good old Delo 400 15w40. We then did 1350+ k on it over the last week including some pretty decent hills inc overtaking everyone on the way up the Kaimais haha, hasn't gone down on the dip stick at all so thats a win in my book. Did a trip up to Auckland and back last weekend, not trying to be fuel effeciant at all -see comment about Kaimais haha. managed 1228.6k on 140.25l of diesel which gives 11.41L/100k or 24.75MPG for Igor, don't think that's too bad for a box on wheels right? And with the oversize tyres that mileage is bang on, no 5k slow speedo here! Just managed a clean sheet VTNZ WOF today too FTW. And since pic-less updates suck... Need to work on making a rack for the line trimmer and a shelf over the mower engines to try organize it a bit nicer! It just won't leave! Street sweeper guy threatened to send the council parking people round if I didn't get it off the road (he'd hit it 3 times with the sweeper truck by that point hahaha) so now every time I open the curtains I'm reminded why I will never buy another Mitsubishi... /Ling post.

  21. Lil more progress however she's running oh-so-rich - to the point that I keep fowling plugs / black smokes. Been through a few plugs now trying to diagnose. I reset the max fuel screw to factory spec on the metering unit and fluffed about with trying to balance the throttle bodies. These could do with a bit more work, but I don't think they are out enough to cause this kind of enrichment. Also, overfuel/choke lever is resetting per guidelines. Blew the over-fuel return clear with the compressor, and then checked for vacuum pressure to metering unit - which seemed a bit low - however I might have also fowled a plug in this process. Did a compression check and all around the 160 mark which I would consider healthy. Did a dort sans bonnet up the road So, next steps (and yes - please comment/suggest) are : Double check ignition side - try another coil in case it's weak, replace/clean plugs again, test lead resistance,. Vacuum to Metering Unit: more vacuum diagnosis across all three sets to see if any difference with side of metering unit to check travel. Metering Unit: Double check fuel pressure with another gauge, then if that all turns pull metering unit again, replace all seals / rebuild and/or start playing with calibration adjustments under top cone of metering unit. (I don't want to do this.... see below) Also - all o-rings at both injector end and metering unit end could also play into problems.

  25. I dealt with Sam at Mag and Turbs, he was real good. He is the manager. They took really good care and used stick on weights as requested with a great balance (not like some other monkeys that stick over 100g of stick on weights on wheels.)

  26. Ah, the culprit to all of the roof woes!! I wondered what the knife marks were around the fuel cap, the roof use to have one of those vinyl covers on top of it. I haven't ever seen one of those come out good after 30 years. they all have a mountain of orange metal under them. I was about to start the front cowl but underneath it was a rusty river so it all has to come off. I drilled these welds out with a drill but have gone and bought a spot drill bit online as I guess it is good to do things properly! I shall resume with the cowl removal on Friday. As you can see, good I removed these. rusty as, and would hate to think how much is under other panels like this. I finished off some more of the body, overall quite happy with the rear end, a couple of dents but all very easy fixes and over it's very straight so that's a bonus. 28. Busy as with work but still chipping away/hurting the credit card when I can. Bomba aka Kenny and Nick kindly came around and helped get the grill in place. Was recommended to do it without masking tape being fresh paint and all, which I thought was going to be a pain but went into place pretty easy. Every bit of chrome and stainless going back on makes such a difference and there's still heaps to go. Pulled apart side mirrors to get chromed and new glass cut but on closer inspection they weren't original so wasn't worth the expense. Hit eBay for some repro King Bee mirrors which are nicer and cheaper in the long run anyway. Dusted off some engine dress up bits which have been patiently waiting on the shelf and drained the stale gas out of the tank. And that's about it. Waiting on my stainless for the hood and trunk and skirts which are getting paint where applicable, then will get visor and mirrors mounted. My tyres are still annoying me too. They're about 3/4" - 1" too thin on the whitewall for the look I want. Which is going to be an annoyingly expensive fix but it's going to keep bothering me. So let me know if anyone is in the market for some near new 205/75r15 Coker radials. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/53947-shifters-51-pontiac-chieftain-talky-stuff/

  30. The second set of 540cc injectors arrive over the weekend so I professionally cleaned them: Checked for sameness: Also used a multimeter to do a resistance check on all 8 ST215 injectors, they were all the same which is nice. Also the same as the old JZX100 injectors, not sure what this really proves... So I went ahead and installed them, checked for leaks and it started up first try, fckn yay. Idle'd perfectly fine, rev'd it a bit and saw a bit of black smoke which I was expecting. The battery had been disconnected for a few days which might explain why the AFR's were super rich at idle with 10.6:! But it then surprisingly sorted itself out, whether it was just cold start rich, I'm not sure but when it was warm it idled at around 14:1 which isn't much different to the standard 370cc's. Next was to test drive it to see what the AFR's did under low boost, but I then found a fuel leak from the rear. Which turned out to be the fuel tank o-ring which looks to have expanded so it doesn't sit right. Have now ordered a new genuine one, for fcking $51.11 11 cents!

  31. There were a couple of mx5s at zebra so I grabbed the cv bolts and the diff input bolts so hopefully they are similar enough to work on the fc so its less sketchy. I also have sorted a load of wheel nuts so there will be more than three holding the wheels on. Its a bit early but does anyone have a set of r32 gtst wheels for cheap? I've seen a couple on those wheels and like the look if them. This one on tardme looks pretty sweet imo

  32. Spent some time on the weekend with the help of @kempy with good results. Some of the stuff I remember: Changed one-way valves on injector pump, cleaned points, bled injectors, replaced injector, adjusted fuel regulator to 110psi pressure, cleared return line, adjusted overfuel lever, replaced 6 (yes 6) totally dead spark plugs, re-timed and marked ignition, swapped distributors, lost all the hair on my arms and temporary hearing whilst fireball from backfire on intake gave @Geophy and @Threeonthetree a good laugh (possibly due to me holding a can of engine start that was also on fire) and then started car. Next steps - sounds like slight miss on one cylinder but no cooling system plumbed in, so, reinstall radiator, tweak, and do skids / road test / fix all the other stuff I find broke. Finally making progress = win.

  34. Almost finished painting inside. I was tempted to just fit carpet, but I think I'll use the 'new' looking carpet in the other 200sx. I mixed some Hammerite silver with black until I got this colour. I originally brushed it on but the brush lines were really bad, unlike when I did the same in another car with white. So decided to try spray it, I thinned in with proper hammerite brand thinners because apparently its something special... It worked pretty well but I definitely need a better compressor. Looks much better than the photo a couple of posts up there ^^^

  35. nice, i remember seeing this on the tard. Dont get rid of the mechanical injection, it is actually lush if set up right, unfortunately you will have to de barry that. The injection system is super easy to get your head around, i have a bunch of the old lucas manuals and can get copies if ya like. 99% of the time the problem with them is a blocked fuel filter or leaking injector seals that have caused the system to lose its prime. once you sort your spark issue out follow this process -remove all spark plugs - remove all injectors from the throttle body but still connected to metering unit, jam them all in a big glass jar or summin - jump the car to a running vehicle -crank for like 5 minutes to prime the injectors, they should all have a nice crisp fine conical spray them jam everything back in and do a phat skid

  37. The V-spec II came with the BBS from factory though a different variant. Not really my bag as I've mentioned, my preference (not that it matters to you, I know, but I just love the look) is a simple 5-spoke such as a RAYS Nismo LM or a Desmond Regamaster They work with the design of the car a lot better than a super spoked "busy" wheel.

  39. over the past couple days ive had about 2.5 hours seat time in this, and i love it, the new engine just works so well. couple little things ive noticed and will sus in the near future is that weird pulse, and there is sometimes a rattle from the timing chain on cold start which will probably call for new tensioners, though it could a do with a touch thicker oil, as i just used the 15w40 i had on hand and im going to engine clean and dump it after a few kms my mechanic brother enlightened me to the fact that there is an actual order of wheels to bleed the brakes, so this should sort the air bubble im sure i have. he also noticed the firewall flexing due to the booster, and its brace being removed, so i will make up a new brace and that will also help with pedal feel im sure. The radiator fan also sucks, but Im not surprised, it's not cowled properly and its a China unit I bought from scarles for cheap, but still too expensive really. took some flash pics with a proper dslr and got a short gopro video of driving. i sure do enjoy looking at it.
