  1. you have to have a semi believable reason as well like camo door cards are illegal cause if you open the door and a cyclist rides past, they wont be able to see the door cause of the camo and they might injure themselves. thats a dangerous fitting

  3. I must finish the wagon, I must finish the wagon, I must finish the wagon, I must finish the wagon, I must finish the wagon, I must finish the wagon, I must finish the wagon, I must finish the wagon…… Its been put on the back while over the last couple of months while things like family visit, jobs that pay get done, land work gets sorted, swimming in the summer sun happens. Bur I have managed to sneak in a few bits here and there. I did a bit more welding repairs to the rear boot/arch corner and I started on the brakes plus I have sorted out the wheels! Its been a little Vivatastic in our workshop recently too. I had Andre's lovely genuine GT in for repairs and I also have a Firenza that has come down from Auckland for much rust removal and repairs including fitting a wide arch body kit. Its going become a 70's V8 powered road going racecar replica. For us Viva fans the workshop was looking pretty spiffy.. Firstly the welding. Pretty easy to see from photos so here we go. Where I left off on the last post was about here… Then this scabby bit.. So the rear end is pretty much done but for a couple of little bits. Lets just ignore the elephant in the room that is the very frilly tailgate (or hatch as Hannah likes to point out..) Next rust area is around the bulkhead so I can put the brake servo and master back in place. Then I can finish the brakes. So those brakes.. Well they were all knackered. I took all the bits off and evaluated their mankyness.. Luckily the calliper pistons freed up and slide out revealing good chrome and seals. So just a clean for them. The pads are still thick and dry so result. Moving to the back. I cleaned up and honed out the wheel cylinders. Usable but not perfect and for the money of new ones not worth fitting seals into. But then I discovered that new cyclinders in NZ were either non- existent or cost moon beams. So I looked to dear old Blighty. There you could get all new old stock parts for the price of a terrible greasy spoon bacon sarnie. Luckily my older brother lives in the land of greasy bacon sarnies and he was coming home to NZ for a holiday. So I started buying up old Viva bits and getting them posted to his house in Wales. He was so grateful.. and brought them over for me (along with several classic car magazines J ) Here’s some bits… Typically after these bits arrived I had been looking through my boxes of bits and discovered not one but two sets of brand new brake shoes. But they probably don’t have the real deal inside them like these beautys… So the rear end is all fresh and daisy. New cylinders, new shoes and new brake lines. I found a new master cylinder seal kit in my stash of parts and that’ll go in place once the rust is done. Wheels next. The wagon came on a lovely set of classic Cheviot Turbos. Lush! Swoon. Two had slight kerbing damage to the outer rim edge. I could have left it but it looked pretty yuck. So I tigged them up and filed them neat again. Quite satisfying. Then since the wheels were in motion…. and I was on a roll…. I gave them all a good wire brush and removed the horrible build up of oxide. That was a nice job on a sunny afternoon. They look a lot better for it. Then the wheel stud holes needed tidying up/remachining because someone in the past had used the wrong nuts, tapered, and it wasn’t very good really. This was going to be bloody tricky with just files etc. So I whipped up this little fly cutter to reface the washer face. It worked a treat and they pull up great on the hubs now. Now many, many yonks ago some might remember the nice set of Dunlop D1 alloys I had bought for my other Viva. I never ended up using them because I had discovered cracks across the hub faces on two of them. But not before I had spent some time machining up nice new stainless washers to suit the new nuts I had bought for those wheels. I found these stashed away and they are a perfect fit on the Turbos. So that was nice. A few weeks back I spent some time welding up Andres Viva GT where it had failed its WOF and he returned the favour by gifting me a set of 185/65 13 tyres he had left over. I had them fitted yesterday and they look good… Sadly one has a pin hole through the sidewall so hopefully I can get it repaired/patched inside. So next step is finish the rust in front and the tailgate (hatch) , finish the brakes and then fix the leaky Stromberg carb. I’ll swap the screen out for one I have that is not covered in scratches and then it’ll be close to going for a WOF ! Simple………. Oh yeah.. we can all discuss the merits of Cheviot Turbos here... //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/44200-yoeddynz-and-hannahs-hb-viva-wagon-discussion/

  4. Another big milestone ticked off yesterday/today, Dtech Motorsport had it on the dyno and gave her a tickle up and tune, Sounds like it made around 260kw atw which will be a hell of a laugh on 175/70/R14 tyres! Need to change the Toyota TPS to a LS1 one as ECU wasnt reading WOT past 80% throttle so sort that and a few things out and he reckons we should see around 300kw lol. Pick it up tonight then its off to the depths of the paint shop for the weekend for a gap of the panels and buff. Comment away here about how much fun its going to be lol //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/34313-the-westpala/page-7

  5. So I want these doors solid, I'm just not completely disassembling them like the shell. That said the bottom hinge on the drivers door needs some major work, some numpty(me) tried to drill out the pin about ten years ago, removed runningboard, jack car up on one side and drilled straight up, sept the car was on a angle this it's self would be bad enough, having to drill out the rivets in the door, fit a new hinge and then suss out nuts and bolts to hold it in place, but I can't. Because someone at some point folded this door right round and half ripped the rivets out, and then welded everything back together. So. This is stuffed anyway, so off it came. See how I skillfully drilled out half of the pin! this is looking from the bottom of the door, there is even less meat left on the top of the hinge. I was hoping to somehow fix this half of the hinge and just use half of the new hinge, but everything is so bent and twisted it really needs replacing. after thinking long and hard about the easiest, fastest or best way to fix this thing, I did this. and chopped the inner panel, hinge and all, out. started removing rust and hammering the folded door skin flat, something I couldn't do with the inner panel in the way. Also cut this out of the other end on the bottom of the same door. very krusty in here. removed parts and new hinge from this angle you can see how far the hinge has pulled though the door. it's going to take some work still to separate the hinge without damaging the door panels shape. Again, What have I done!! started making a patch for the bottom corner, might have to wait till the weekend till I can cut the hinge out of the door panel. Also finally welded up what must be the last rust hole in the body, on the passenger rear quarter window sill. and just a wide shot of the shed just to prove I haven't cut the whole thing into tiny chunks. my names Angus and that's my story.

  6. Better not be, the West Coast is drifting north east at 2-3cm per year. Will the Grey District Council get a ticket in the post for "sustained loss of traction" for NZ's biggest skid?

  7. Recently I've rebuilt my steering box , had a "bolt in replacement" but the bolt holes were 1/2 " futher apart so must have been out or a different model. Anyway took out the internals from the not fucked new 1 and put them in origional housing with some new needle roller bearings and a seal... yae the sector shaft now dosn't move laterally 3 mm Now for sill rust , just 1 side , went on discovery adventure with angle grinder 1mm skim coat of bog dust through out garage Where they brazed on the Wagon to a sedan body can see old repairs stitched in front half of sill , hence all the bog The inside of the bottom of the A piller is also rusty , hopefully can replace it when i have the sill off... Floor pan still to come - turns out false floor (galv sheet metal) tacked in with pigeon shit over top of origional floor was a dumb idea from previous owner... not looking forward to what i find under it also need to figure out a good way to get the worlds supply of underseal off the underside... im thinking Liquid Nitrogen??

  9. i gave the injectors a spruce up and a coat of paint. then attached new injector seals and put it all back together. its starting to look about right. I've still got the bottom windage tray to attach and the fan shroud, both of which need a good clean up and a coat of paint. im also missing the proper oil cap for this rocker cover and i need to get a hose to make the breather pipe with. Mikes got the oil cap so i just need to get it off him and paint it. next is to start on the interior so ill do the heater box and put that back in first i think. 2016-03-16_06-27-44 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-03-16_06-27-59 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-03-17_05-38-51 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-03-17_05-38-58 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-03-17_05-39-12 by sheepers, on Flickr

  10. Just picked up a Volvo 240 Wagon, 2.3L of raw Swedish fury, a car so good it outlived it successor in production. The Soviet's being the fine connoisseurs they were, decided this was the model they must have for their embassy and so it was purchased, by them, new in 1988. 363,000 KM's later (the odometer stopped working shortly after) here it is: First job is to get it road legal..

  11. That sounds like it's worth investigating. I would be stripping down the calliper and checking that out and probably giving the entire system a over zealous flush through... I think you may have an issue. Could be the internal lining of the hose breaking down or seal deposits.

  12. Minor update. The seatbelt guides & rear seatbelt repair kit turned up yesterday from the US of A. Only took about 2 weeks to get here so pretty rapt with that. For now I like the seat covers on the front seats so I cut a slot & steteched it around the guide mount.. Then popped the guides on easy as, so now the belt won't be cutting me in the side of the neck! Rear seatbelt kit literally took 15 seconds to install. The insides of the belt buckle went missing at least 10 years ago, but never got pulled up for a warrant. These seatbelt buckles have the nickname "the exploding seatbelt", this is because the plastic retainer gets brittle & the spring pops everything out.. Very happy with this as now I can feel a bit safer taking my kids out for a drive. I'll probably pick up another kit on my next parts order so the other one matches, but that's not a biggie for me.

  15. This could be irrelevant, and totally unscientific in every way, with no recorded data, or even adequate testing done other than feel. But I installed a trans cooler in my Hilux Surf after a hard day out on the beach in the sand climbing sand dunes etc, I could feel the heat in the car coming off the tunnel was immense. Since the install of the trans cooler (still plumbed into the radiator aswell), I have yet to feel the same immense heat from the tunnel, in the same or even slightly hotter weather conditions. As I said, totally unscientific, but reel woorld gainz wur hed i buleve.

  17. Well things have finally settled down a little bit for me to start a thread on my new old car. Selling my hatchback was a massive headache but so happy it went to someone in the end who reckons he'll have on the road in about a year (he's a panelbeater which helps I believe). I flew down to Christchurch a couple of weekends ago with the old man, & after having a good chat with the previous owner we jumped in & roared off. Been a while since I drove a LHD car, last time was about 15-20 years ago in my mates old '76 mustang, but it didn't take too long to get the hang of it. And dad piped up when he saw that I was starting to wander over the centerline too which helped. The trip was a blast. 4 hours sleep the night before & barely half an hour on the ferry made for an interesting drive toward the end - especially driving through the night in pouring rain with the windows leaking. Fun times. Took a coupla pics just round the corner from the previous owners place Took a couple of days, but the hatch got picked up & I was able to park the Camaro in it's new spot Discussion topics greatly welcomed here: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/52171-jeds-74-type-lt-camaro/

  18. So I went to Marton and picked this Gemini coupe up on Saturday for $1000. It's 99% complete and not completely rust fucked. Even drove it on and off the trailer. G200z It now looks like this. I'm going to build a rotisserie for it in my spare time. I'm meant to be working on my shed/home so progress will be a bit slow to start with!

  34. Everything is nearly done now. Just need to make the exhaust, sort out the breather/pcv valve and tidy up the wiring, as it's a mess. Made some overly complicated throttle linkage. This is since the Weber's throttle rotates the opposite way to the factory carby, also clearance issues and because the cable travels way more than what the carby rotates (would result in very touchy accelerator pedal with hardly any travel) if that makes sense. Anyway this works mint and uses the full pedal travel. Filled it up with oil and coolant tonight and started it. Started up first try after fuel had gotten through. Ran really nice! Was quite loud with only the headers on haha. Will try get a video tomorrow.

  36. Engine bay shot.. As you can see, the rocker covers, air cleaner & alternator bracket are a lovely patina of pitted cheap chrome. Dislike the rocker covers especially though, so while I was wandering around the Puke swap meet last weekend I happened across these cool old Weiand one's. Unfortunately the seller would only sell them as a set with the "matching" air cleaner, but for just over a hundy I thought it was a good deal. Sanded the fins down to the alloy & cleaned them up a little bit then chucked them on. Nice improvement there I think

  43. The rear sill was next. No surprises here. A new sill was made in the folder. Weldy weldy. Grindy grindy Because of the slope of the carport I wasn't able to jack the back up and made it a c*** to weld and grind underneath. Oh well, it ended up pretty good anyway. Again all this was primed and had epoxy sprayed in the sill once it was welded shut.

  44. Being an escort, the first choice of wheels were always going to be hotties. I also mucked around with the height with some blocks and springs I had. Treated it as a test van for parts which would end up on my other. Other then that it sat dormant for 2 and half years because of rust issues. Plan was always to finish the other one, then play with this blue one. That was until earlier this year when I decided I wanted this thing on the road again....

  45. So this just happened......maybe getting a bit carried away. Polisher has given the trumpets and manifolds/fuel rails a hearty polish, came up mint!!! 46. Few photos of the passenger side repairs inside the heater duct and lower windscreen areas. Like the drivers side a section was removed to carry out the repair then refitted when complete. Kayne has checked that the windscreen fits evenly as the previous repairs had distorted the steel so some more work was required to get it all looking good. As usual Im very happy and now starting to think about colours. Some discussion //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/30893-crustys-jzx31/ And the finished product. Super happy.

  47. Went back to Wellington last week and caught up with Kayne. Im stoked and the next stage will be the previous repairs around the windscreen and some little dozzles in the passenger door. Inside just needs a clean up and etch primed. And this is my favorite from the photos and threads found online.
