  1. Was able to wire wheel the rear floor on Wednesday night and sand below the back seat. Panel beated out the 30+ years of abuse the floor and wheel acrhes had from commercial duties. There were a lot of dents alon the floors ridges. No point getting These dead flat with filler because A ) I couldnt be bothered, B ) They'l probably be covered anyway and C ) I couldnt be bothered. Its a million times straighter than before. Also chipped out all the old seam sealer and will replace it this week. Prepped and sprayed Thursday night. Put a few more coates on then i normally would because the inside always gets knocked around a bit. Now its time to make the outside match the inside.

  5. Not relating to this month but I may be in and around the Auckland region in the middle of January for a friend's wedding. I'll have to review the dates but it would be lovely to make the meat again. We'll see how we go. Excellent. Carry-on. P.S. Good work on that post, Neal. So efficient.

  7. 16th is probably better tbh as it gives a bit of seperation between the Chrithmath festivities and the Meet. Hopefully meaning a better turnout. I'll put up a thread now.

  8. heck yes. I could spend days just hooning around the various roads around there! just flicked an email through to wendy from the apiti pub. i was super impressed with those guys yesterday. I told them a group of about ten and they said even though they had that function going on that they'd look after us. i was skeptical, let alone when a whole lot more of you lads turned up than I expected but I reckon they did really well. A++ would trade again.

  9. So i've decided on bit of a plan in the way I should attack this thing. Get the motor, brakes and suspension up to scratch road test rust repairs rear fit out- seats, bed, kitchen etc re-vin I probably should re-vin at an earlier stage but we will probably use it for a few sneaky runs down the valley to camp at the river and i'm willing to risk it. Have had a reasonable look over the van and its all in really good shape save for the rust which i gather has only appeared since being parked up under the tree. Got it up on axel stands, removed the wheels and drums to inspect brakes, all in really good condition, good shoes, no leaks and un worn drums. Repaired the dodgy work on some of the fuel lines and replaced the broken filter. charged the battery and got it going with the help of ether. Cleaned the points, set the idle mixture and speed, set the timing (way advanced! no wonder it struggled to turn over) now it fires up and idles fine just need to get oil, filters, plugs and coolant. Next step is to get some tyres (looking at whitewalls from STA parts) and put the van back together to road test! Realised i've had a few goodies stashed that fit the project perfect! Front centre badge i've had for ages and i'm sure its from a Hiace (and the camper is missing it) A set of 14" hubcaps that fit perfect, pretty sure they came off a Toyota Crown so a good enough match for me

  10. for cert purposes, you cant weld a push rod. you could make a one piece clevis that threads on to the push rod and incorporates the balance bar sleeve

  11. Nice surprise at work this morning, Rimmers had delivered! I only managed to get the manifold gasket, exhaust manifold and bottom gasket on before the rain started! Black powder coat looking better than rust already. Decided to give the air intake Flexi hoses a bit of a scrub whilst inside with nothing to do.

  13. Hey Everyone, (Discussion Thread) This is my baby, got a lot of work to do on him. Was given the impression that he was in better condition than he is but ah well. Will update after I have stripped him down. Hopefully there won't be any more surprises (Please ignore the raised bonnet. It does close, albeit somewhat a bit tightly. Just forgot to shut it after looking at the engine) Edit: Added Discussion link. Edited title (we think it's actually a 73 not a 75 model. Will change back if Mitsubishi says otherwise).

  15. Since it's Christmas I would like to do some sort of Secret Santa type thing. These are usually lame but we'll make it oldschool/car/bike/2 stroke themed. I'm talking about gifts such as; A 1977 Hot Rod Magazine featuring an article Tunnel Ram intakes that you found in a 2nd hand store for $2, Automotive/retro themed op shop clothing/caps/Cheviot badges, Vinyl records, Parts you bought at swap meets but you can't remember why etc etc If attendees are keen let me know and I'll make up a list of who is surprising who.

  16. pictureless update for now Well its home set off from my place at 7 am to pick up my mate then went and got a trailer from a friend we got into napier at around 1230 and loaded the car on in 30+deg heat and set back home . the roof rust is definitely worse than expected i think its had repairs done to its previously and the small patch of rust on the floor is actually a hole but other than that its not bad . Has had an electric fuel pump ect installed and it seemed to go pretty well and was making all the right noises when i took it for a hoon round the block the carbs need a bit of a clean i think and the brakes are a bit spongy from sitting around so picked up a new(er) mig and will get some steel the best bet would be to find another roof and get it put on by a panelbeater but parts are pretty few and far between so for now im just going to start patching the rust and priming it. I will get a panel beater to spray it so stand by for some terrible body work i haven't done too much of it before but we all have to start somewhere right? ill chuck some photos up in the next few days

  17. Went up to Waihi on an OS cruise for Pizza, and then snuck off out to Te Arai for a surprisingly good surf. Car went quite well, which is good becasue OS Drag Day coming up on December 12. i also took this on the way back from Te Arai to Muriwai, SH16 between Wellsford and Kaukapakapa, then Peak Road to Waimauku is a great drive! Unfortunately is after the really nice twistly bits but cars running well - Camer is jammed in the headrest so the mic is a bit muffled, so turn it up.

  18. Discuss? - //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/29495-sparkles-bmw-of-supermega-happy-hell-yes/ So recently gave this thing a bit of a tidy up, mainly in the interior, which was started by my a1 wife getting me a rad Momo Prototipo for my 30th. The ever amazing Greg for Midnight Upholstery whipped me up a couple of new door cards to replace the originals that were cut to bits for some ugly 6x9s by the previous owner, Simon came to town to make me a little panel to mount the VDO gauges, and Cam chucked a bit of vinyl at it, and totally rewired the engine bay, and got rid of a shit load of unnecessary wires. I also got a nice new gearknob turned up from a guy from the wood workers guild. The highly talented Richy "I'm not a fan of excess Coriander" Opie came down and took some amazing shots - some of you may have seen some sneak previews for a certain upcoming article! Oh, and I also got it retuned now that it's run in. Not much in the way of peak power, but a nice 8-10kw pick up in a lot of mid range bits. Goes quite well! First run in 3rd, then 4th.

  22. Control box almost complete, almost as I couldn't find any 6 pin plugs like the other ones I used locally so they'll have to go on later, I'll just stuff a grommet in the hole for now. This houses the ECU, Battery, a little servo trickery and a whole nest of wires. Ended up being a lot bigger than I imagined it to be as the die-cast boxes jump from just a tiny bit too small to way to big. I ended up placing it directly over the turbine for a couple of reasons being that if the turbine decides to let go it has another barrier to get through before it hits the rider, also it helps protect the turbine if I fall off. Nearly done!

  29. Right, for people wanting a bit of this Meet at the Plimmerton Weighstation (see start of map below) at 11 am. We can hit up Otaki for lunch/supplies/novelty items before heading off the main drag and out to camp. For those that want to head straight to camp, aim for the South Side (see end of map below) https://www.google.co.nz/maps/dir/-41.0766995,174.8736483/-40.8829408,175.2215174/@-40.8901475,175.2125656,4910m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!4m1!3e0 Long range forecast is shit but we will see how it goes later in the week.

  30. Well done Cam, it was well worth the effort to make an early start from Auckland. I drove that extension that you mentioned above from Mangaweka to get to meet up spot - was an epic road, but just wish that I had my 205 for it as it really is the best car for the twisty stuff - what makes it fun is that it's so easy to hustle along without even really trying. My 306 felt big and heavy in comparison, even though it's not by any means.

  36. heh, weirdly enough it was pretty much only a trot for the 205, with a few spots of minerals here and there too. It's not fast on a track by any means but give it a bit of road like that and it's amazingly casual to drive quickly. I've been thinking of flicking that thing but when you drive it on a road like that it reminds me why I have it in the shed. I think I used about $15 of gas for the whole day too. such economy. Love that loop road. There's an extension you can do (instead of turning left at the Tee to come into apiti, turn right) which links through to Rangiwahia. Can go through to Mangaweka or back down to Kimbolton. Another great set of roads. We did that loop with the french forum a few years ago mid winter. I didn't have a french mobile so took my old man's 1000cc mini and was working seriously hard to keep the pack at a fun pace (I was leading). We were driving amongst snow lined roads and all. So awesome! Glad all you jokers enjoyed. I'm not good at organising stuff, and I don't always catch up with everyone that comes along but I really love showing people around the backroads of my home region. There's some damn good roads, beautiful scenery and great 'left to rot' sights to be seen on plenty of backroads. I'll start planning the next one now

  40. Hi Jack. Ross is the name. Live in Caboolture Queensland. Just a couple of lines to keep in touch. Leaving for Christchurch via Wellington back home on the 17th. Thinking about your piston replacement. were the circlips retaining the gudgeon pin circular or did they have ends to enable pliers to grip them for ease of removal.? If they have ends on the circlips I seriously suggest you lift the barrel, and using side cutters, and remove them. I went through two barrels and three pistons, the latter was a 62cc and the barrel bored to suit. I notice that a note was in the piston box which stated "Please cut the ends off the circlips before installing this piston". Apparently various resonances causes some sort of internal harmonics. Well taxi is waiting. Sorry we couldnt' get together this time If you can leave me a phone number, we can discuss and help each other. Presently I am looking for a complete motor. Let me know if you have any contacts. Cheers Ross

  42. Have been busy sanding the guide coat for the last few weeks. That shit takes for ever, even when its not clogging up the sandpaper. Still have a few areas to finish but 99% of its done. Then its onto final primer. This last week has seen a few late nights in the garage. The idea was to get the inside prepped and primed. Took the window and headlining out, very happy to see NO RUST. The person who last sprayed the van took the window out before painting on a million layers of orange, which probably saved this area. Under the headlining was the same story, original color this time but no rust, not even surface. Decided to do the inside in sections to make it easier. Started with the roof, only took it to bare metal where it needed it, keyed up everywhere else. Sprayed on nice, few runs but wont be seen when the lining goes back in. Next night was prepping the sides and floor..

  45. fixed that, ready for crashing into mustangs starting boggling on how to do the upper 4 link mounts on the diff, copied some of sheepers trick that I saw he used on richies starlet diff to help with the locating the diff mounts but wont work completely as you can see the original fox body setup has a bushing pressed into a thingie on the diff and im changing to a rod end setup. still i can use it to help define the angle and distance apart. also was very lucky - I though I was going to have to pull the whole diff apart at this point because the diff breather location appeared to be right where the mount was going to have to go. but on further investigation the diff head is offset a little and it is just going to clear so that is a win. will still have to pull the thing apart to swap the center and check axle lengths to ensure they will engage in the e-locker centre properly (a wee birdie tells me it may be a little known toyota secret that the e-locker diffs have different length axles to the LSD axles for the locking collar to engage on) but also this diff has been shortened so who knows what might be hiding inside. also will be getting a disc brake conversion but that is also a later job at this point.

  47. so i finally gave in and gave my mums shed back to her. mainly so i could start working on my wagon. last time i started it i was driving it around the block no problems. this time it was farting around missing and been a right prick!!!! (i think someone played with my spark plug leads!) but yeah proceeded to drive it towards my work shop which is only 2 kms up the road max and had nothing but huge back fires and all the rest. mum ended up towing me the rest of the way. i also went to horopito motors a few weeks back and done some valiant shopping. came back with a rear window!!! pretty sure i was paying per moss patch. and this is what the shop looks like now while im here. yeah vw doesnt go either since wheel bearing sounds like its shat the bed and the green sedan likes to jump out of 3rd gear i have no old cars going bloody cars!!!!
