  1. So now I reg'd my 121 I have been having some serious thoughts/beers over what to start next. For economy and theoretical ease of completion I decided to resurrect my 929.. some history ensues. I bought this in early 97 after spotting it down the back of Canterbury Radiators on Tuam st (chch) and bought it for the pricey sum of $300 de-reg'd. I then sold my poo brown (bracken) 78 wagon to fund the rebuild only to see it a year later at the local wreckers.. boo. Anyway, the car was originally a tan gold but I had BRG on my mind, more specifically mx5 racing green. So I bare metaled it and found a completely straight, rust free body, the doors had some holes along the bottom, a mate gave me some good rx4 doors, I think the bonnet had some issues but, cocanes a hell of a drug.. The same mate helped me prime, fill and prep the car for paint which was completed at some truck painters place in wigram for $150 in enamel BRG (cheap). I had also built a cam'd MA a year previously which I installed with a 626 five speed. The whole thing was completed including exhaust and new 235 yoko 352's for about $1800.. not bad for a bum on the dole I thought.. just before paint.. don't have any finished shots other than a speed camera shot and one at my sisters place.. I was supremely stoked, for three weeks drove around accepting the looks and the nods like a true try hard rotor head and then... Had a bit of a booboo.. got a bit of school mum road rage at the intersection of rutland st and innes road (rugby park in chch) an intersection that I had had trouble at before but clearly not learnt from. Had a van blocking my lefthand view, saw a rav4 take a gap and gunned it only to be t boned by a mondeo. I was fairly heartbroken to say the least, lots of drinking completed my day of despair. Luckily I had been hit straight on the rear wheel and the diff took a fair amount of the impact snapping the nearside leaf spring and popping the propshaft, somehow the wheel itself escaped unharmed.. My sisters bf knew a panel beater and the car eneded up about 5 doors down from where I bought it. $1500 later and a donor rx4 quarter and I was back on the road.. fucken PHEW! It had a fairly hard next 2 years then blew a head gasket and sat from then on while I pursued further automotive acquisitions. When I look back I can't for the life of me figure out why I stopped driving it cos it then went into storage and subsequently lapsed reg while I was overseas.. Duh!.. When my cheap storage failed in 2012 it sat in the drive out here in brotown under a shit tarp and suffered a little paint wise. Tried to sell it for 6 months but couldn't get enough, glad I didn't as it was the one thing I knew I'd regret.. fuck family pressure. So I then got serious and bought one of those heavy duty uv resistant tarps two cans of fishoil liberally applied and stuck it out the front where it has done surprisingly well given the conditions, whoever said cars don't do well under tarps.. well.. something. Really all it needs is a respray (will try for the original colour), engine and a cleanup and it should be back on the road soon enough. I'll clean up the suspension while I'm at it, it has 121 struts coz of the vented discs so I might have to revert back to standard if anyone has some lying around (Dane) Yes this is an early 4, but it will be the look I'm going for.. albeit with some early 626 steelies..

  2. So i have sorted out the driveshaft problem i was having. I guess the difference came from the fact that i went from auto to manual gearbox. The engine is definitely where it should be. Found a two piece driveshaft from an early L200 and fitted the front half of that to the back of the existing one and it fits perfectly! yuss! just need a new universal for the middle and to swap the hanger bearings bracket over and that's sorted. Now i just need to modify the x member so it will bolt on where the old one did and all will be swell. But that makes for some pretty boring pictures. I also took the springs out of the front and tried some wheels on for size......

  7. Smoothest car I've ever driven. Need to get my Brougham going for maximum luxobarge cruising. Edit: For those who weren't there, imagine the Gran Torino 6 up, rolling at twenny miles an hour down the road with Prince Tui Teka flowing from the speakers.

  10. Shit this build is going slow! compaired to last time anyway. Ball is still rolling tho, I feel like im real dragging the chain and but Dannys dominating it ...............agian Got some prime-hole on my tank, Tanks to Chris other tank and bits are for chris's hog Put the new foot pegs on, had to modify the hangers, worked out all good, apart from one flaw that i fuct up on - keen motorcycles will spot Think they look oright, not sure if Im just steering at them and not totally all bout them or once its all done, mounts are black, and youll hardly notice them Lowered the rear and front abit more, the rear is at 60mm on the shock and front is 110 in this photo, Im think bang on 100mm will level out the tank and frame nicely and Im happy with that for swing arm levelness haha once i sit on it itll be sweet Head light brackets on, this headlight came with the bike, its not factory, i kinda like it but the bottom of the front surround is totally rusted out, so have to look out for a new one Top view of foot pegs, Dannys hog is looking pretty much finished....looking anyway. He peiced it together the other night and rode it After something like 3 weeks of wiring, cut extend remove and remount, the thing still fires up, with out catching on fire which is nice Ride that hog That is all

  22. So I bought a whole spare engine for it's extractors, super cheap from a dude who rolled his Colt. Never hurts to have plenty of spare parts I guess… Turns our the extractors were pretty rooted, cracked in a couple of places and evidence of some previous repairs. So I got a set made up, they look like this: and the rest of the exhaust replaced, now 2 1/4 all the way through, lets the Astron breathe a bit better. Here's a terrible photo: with a nice little double tip: The whole set up sounds great, really nice rumble without being stupid loud.

  24. You need to read some books Race car chassis - Design and construction by Forbes Aird is one I would recommend. It's easy to read and has plenty of real world advice that you really need. This book will explain in layman's terms how you design a chassis (even a simple one) taking into account the loads that said chassis will experience. After that maybe Tune to win by Carrol Smith. This book will help you understand the basics of suspension and steering systems. Nothing you've done thus far is safe or functional. Harsh but true. I mean even fundamental stuff, like you've welded the chassis with a gassless mig. Gassless mig's do a shit weld to start with, then i bet every weld's been stop-start forming heaps of cold brittle point and undercuts, all nice stress concentration points. Then you're going to hard mount a vibrating engine to the frame. The flat, twin beam chassis has no real torsional stifness and will flex. Between the flexy chassis and the engine vibrations the welds don't stand a chance. You would have been better off making a chassis from wood and bolting it together. That's not even touching your suspension design... It's kind of a case of "you don't know what you don't know" Take a week read two books, get learned and then do a proper job of it!

  26. Hey! Im Aimee, I'm Shakotoms little sister. About 6 months back i went to a street culture meet with my brother to have a geeze, wandering around the meet i saw a KP Starlet and since then i fell in love. Saw this pop up and went to have a look at it, could see too much wrong with it so a couple of days later came home with it. And yes, this is Berjs' old Starlet. Meet Devon Discussion thread

  31. Haha awesome, that's exactly the experience I'm hoping for If I got a few solid days it might be possible, just a lot of little jobs which will add up, making brackets, spacers etc Will probably jump on my C90 for it. On the subject of brakes, I have these on the way A 1/2" master off a CBR400 and some 4 pot calipers off a TZR250, the early TZR's have the same 83mm mount spacing as the RD. I'm only using one caliper and have matched the master to it accordingly, this site here has some good info http://www.vintagebrake.com/mastercylinder.htm My ratio is about 23:1 so will give a firm lever like all your mums amirite

  41. So basically my brother is going to help me maintain it and teach me a bit about these things. After getting the car home we discovered it actually had a fuel leak from the hose between the fuel pump and the carb hardline, so i replaced it with a new bit of hose. the starlet came on the original 12inch steel wheels but the tyres are no good, Shakotom had a set of 13x6 alloys that he had squirreled away for a future project; so he decided to give them to me. they need abit of a clean up but should be good. does anyone know what they are? they're stamped ryobi on the face and my grandad had them on his AE86 back in the early nineties. I just need to get some starlet sized tyres for them. maybe 155/70r13s?
