  1. While I was in hospital some awesome mates decided to rebuild my bike for me. I had no idea at all that this was happening. This weekend at the Hanmer meet Jonny rode over on a sweet looking bike, I was very impressed. Before long I started to realise that the number plate and engine looked kind of familiar, sure enough it was my bike rebuilt. Looks and rides amazing, incredibly impressed. Thanks so much again to everyone that has helped out and contributed to the build, I really appreciate it and am stoked.

  3. For those of you that Know I have been on the look for a new work vehicle for a while now. The poor old Alfa must be getting near the end of its life with 255,000 kms on it . So the challenge was on to find a Vehicle that was up to the job hopefully Oldschool was first on the list. Next it needed be able to move stuff (cakes) with care and carry half a ton if needed . So I found this has a warrent , rego , rust and a rattly motor but it goes and road legal starts like dream from cold and the 1.3 power plant what more could you want . Had to have at least one photo of this great car has changed the way I look at an Alfa's with this many Km how can you fault them??????????????? More on the new Work Van I have these wheels sitting around and think they will suit this well While I had the wheel off I noticed 9 inch drums which is great but the plan is to keep it very standard with a little low and some wheels. Inside the back is in such good condition looks like it's hardly carried anything and rides that high as well. The guy I bought it off swore black and blue that it had 87,000 km. I'm not sold but there are some very good condition parts inside it. The urgent list has a new window rubber new floor pan fix the messy back door repair. And for looks wheels lowered Discussion Thread //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/44953-shaneos-79-escort-work-van/

  4. Pretty special weekend right there. So good to get slaughtered with my os boes and boe-ettes again. And thoroughly enjoyed a huge salad banquet so late at night. (People are coming around to my way of thinking at last) Thanks to Karl for making the weekend such a lush reality. And huge ups to all who came. Also fucking massive thanks to Karl for letting me use his truck for recovery purposes. Returned the Val to dads around 2ish on sunday. We had the motor and trans out, and separated that afternoon. Nothing too fucked really. His excess is only $100. So it's far from the end of the world. But that's the end of me and vals on unsealed roads. (I rolled my one of those on gravel some years ago) I really got max enjoyment from otp yarns on the friday night. Pity I don't really remember much of what was said. And shgwag, the things that came out of your mouth will haunt me for months.................

  6. For anyone interested here's the list I made on my phone about 6 weeks out from Hamner which was of course the deadline *handbrake cable *Radiator * Upper hose *Coil *Fuel pump *tank blockage *clean carb *bump stops *Drive shaft *clutch master/slave seals *Bleed clutch *bleed brakes *Panels *lights *Exhaust studs *leads/points timing *strut spacers *Interior panels *Rear seats *sort front seats *bumper irons *power steering *boot rust *exhaust Revin *Adjust lights *swap front wheels *steering idler *bolt in steering coupler Rear trailing arms * Paint * Install bushes *Mazda engine confirmation -ltsa engine confirmation Gear oil Brake fluid Plugs/points Seal kit clutch Fuel filter Petrol Rubber mounts d/shaft Air filter Pick a part alt Rad cap Underseal Kneadit Trans fluid Went good up to Hamner, fucked up the clutch master seal and it bit the dust on the way from my house to the Northwood convoy meet, had to drive up there with no clutch which meant every time I had to stop I had to pull over and start it in 1st then do the old revmatch gear change which is easy enough.. also meant I couldn't give it a canning to clear out whatever had been sitting in the rings/valves for the last 5 years. Big thanks to Felix for grabbing a seal kit from repco on his way. Definitely got faster on the way back but had a minor tank pickup blockage which raised its head whilst overtaking a commonwhore.. bit embarrassing, especially after having overtaken a couple before that too. Other than that she was flawless, fucken stoked.. Oh.. have to cut and shut the panhard rod as it's pushed the diff to one side lightly scuffing one tyre on some bumps..

  11. I am not having a go at you but it has to be said that your posts are coming across as whining and much stamping of feet. However your beef should be with your suspension guy. He was the one that told you that you don't need a wheel alignment for the cert. He is the one who wrongly assumed your certifier wanted it for the rear suspension when in actuality it is for the front suspension lowering. Your car was lowered when it went in for the cert so of course the certifier is going to base his certification checks at that height. How would he know your intentions to raise it back up unless you explicitly told him. You have clearly admitted that you don't know it all. (and I will admit the same applies to me in this subject) so why are you questioning someone whose job is to know it all about this subject in particular. If you think you have suffered mistreatment at the hands of a certifier then I'm sorry but in this case you look to be quite wrong. The fact that you are referring to Clint, it makes it even harder to get on your side here because I can categorically state that he is an upstanding dude and on a scale of 1-10 of fairness then I would rate him a solid 10 out of 10. If anything can come out of this then it should be a good lesson that if you are doing modfications to a vehicle then consult your certifier and make a plan before starting so you know what you are expected to do and at what stage you need to get him in to look at your work - if at all. Cheers

  12. So after a mad rush to finnish building my car trailer we headed away this weekend to purchase my new datsun bluebird. after many kms and a few stops we finally got to Wairoa at 4pm sat. As per usual it was alot worse off than was suggested on trademe but there was also a few gems left on it that can help the other return to the road. anyway the farmer was a good sort helped to drag it on to the trailer (15years of storage left it with flat tyres and a siezed brake drum on the rear). He aslo offered us his pig who was quite fond of my partner. But since we live in Birkenhead we might get removed from the neighbourhood having a pet pig. We carryed on to Napier for some overpriced gas and a great night sleep at 'The Country Hotel' (5* recomended) After a nice brekky my partner said that I was allowed to buy if we can take more breaks like this (sweeeet) Full credit to the Maxi with 486000kms on the clock she still towed like a boss and only used 3/4 of a full 65L tank from Napier to Auckland with a car in tow.

  18. Thanks to everyone involved, Only my 2nd meat but once again I really enjoyed myself! Burning ozone layers, molesworth rattling out bolts and chewing up wheel bearings... wouldnt have it any other way After getting home with alot of worrying noise coming from front left, she didn't want to back into the driveway... Torque quickly overcame this but left behind a trail of what I can only assume is a inner wheel bearing... but thats the essence of OS right?

  20. Hello. Bit of background first i guess is the place to start... Me (mtbtimr) and my mate (Sammy1222) (both 20 and relatively inexperienced mechanical engineering students) recently bought a 1972 Austin 1300 in bold but original magenta. The aim is to restore this little beauty to its former glory (classic), and learn some about cars etc along the way. Since this is a first for both of us we chose to start with something which was already drivable (WOF and reg). So here she is! Her name is Maggie. Couldn't resist taking it to uni day 2

  22. First 'job' was swapping out the grille. Grille on the car was MkII when we got it and was showing signs of rust, so we swapped it out for a MkIII refurbed grille which came with the car.

  24. Same with everything mate, the minority ruin it for the rest. While i agree with the "who writes these rules" comment These are written by someone behind a desk who writes a limit to use across the board "aka for everyone" and you only have to look at the camber rules to see there was little thought put into the variety of car choice, aka it was rushed in to limit the crazy amounts of camber that was enveloping the overseas car scenes at the time. Reality its has to be simple enough for every tom, dick and harry in a blue uniform to enforce and alot of them are not technical people who are even interested in the exhaust , adjustable suspension and height regulations written.............. Now you have to get a piece of paper that says you camber is within the allowable factory limits for the vehicle recorded on your cert file to show the car/ute/bus/lawnmower can be adjusted to fit inside the factory limits, here by covering the LVVTA if an accident was caused by the geometry your car was setup too. Shame really as Guys like Clint (based on his answers on here) are very practical/knowledgeable when assessing what they consider safe only to be told what limits are safe by someone else because someones mate-certifier doesn't value safety as much (or people are prepared to push stupid to a whole new level). Its easier for LVVTA to assume that the thing is safe with a small deviation from from the manufacturers limits than to consider every vehicle on a case by case basis........ Not really looking forward to the first officer having a bad day to test my knowledge but i guess that's his problem......... Had to spend a fortune Cutting/welding/making everything adjustable to get my 1600 back to factory settings, End of the day once its set ill make some markings with a punch to adjust back too depending on the amount of road use it gets........... Keep up the good work Clint

  26. racecars are different, they have an authority card that allows them to do what they like etc. i can't imagine many adjustable suspension that will work across its complete range without becoming uncaptive, adding to much bump steer or being to low etc. Please go and do some proper research, even just looking at a cert plate will tell you more than what you know now.

  34. The rear kitchen area is going to be for food prep and storage of plates, vegemite, gingernuts, English Breakfast tea etc. Beer storage will be in a trusty chillybin. Cooking will be on the WeberQ. I will check that height for you soon. A little bit more done. Glued the outer skin in place. Man that was fun. Got glue everywhere on my clothes. Let the glue set for 7 days before removing straps. Stole a doorlock off an old screen door I had laying around. Nice narrow mortice with small 30mm backset. Fitted the edges with ali right angle extrusion. Just a few jobs left, then will strip the bits off it to clear coat it.

  37. every time we submit the paperwork, and it says lowered suspension, we have to supply a wheel alignment report, I know its dumb in your case as the front is only lowered a minimal amount but thats the rules. http://www.lvvta.org.nz/documents/infosheets/LVVTA_Info_04-2012_Suspension_Camber_Angle_Guide.pdf as for the towbar bolts being loose, if the vehicle hasnt had a recent wof check then we have to do a basic safety check like a wof as part of the inspection, that is a legal requirement. if you have a problem with the inspection, feel free to ring me on 0274 522 049 Clint.
