  1. well then, many happenings have been happening. firstly my good Mate Adam strapped it down to his dyno and he had a go at tuning it. the fuel pump died and it was making 15PSI which is way to much for a poor little M122. so i pulled the fuel pump out and replaced it with a walbro GSS341 and i made a bigger pulley for the supercharger. while i was at it i put the colder thermostat in it. put it all back together and this morning i went back to Adam's dyno for another go. everything was working so we set about basic setup, this is where i discovered that id set the timing wrong and it was retarded by 15 degrees. dont know how id fucked that up but i had. explains a lot.............. so anywho with the timing right things progressed well and the thing made power without getting hot so thats solved. pics/video can tell the rest of the story. EDIT - flickr is being a dick and wont upload any pictures. it made 250RWKW and the torque is literaly a straight line at 280 foot pounds. but youtube is working so heres the vid,

  3. Got this as daily hack. have fixed a fair bit of cancer. Ideal plan is to tidy up as much as possible without a full ground up build....maybe a set of custom rims.. dont have a lot of photos as such but here is one I took before I bought it. The previous owner lived it so I'm continuing the legacy Discussion thread

  4. After a couple of big sessions we have a drive train and it works! As I have stated have been concerned about the weight with the buggy body. Story within itself scored a bonnet locally in great condition, so now we have a Volksrod! Also had concerns about the gearing and brakes, no worries with the gearing plenty low enough to get going and cruise, if anything will probably have to gear her up a couple of cogs. Brakes are better than expected as well, all four rear wheels have brakes which helps, operated from a lever mounted outside the seats, emergency braking Fred Flinstone style! Plan to run her without the front bar maybe rig up a small nurf bar, pretty happy with where she’s at, looks like a Volksrod?!

  6. Wrapped the exhaust as i didn't want it to cook the alternator or starter Blocked off a couple of vacuum hoses and rangid up a fuel supply I've got 11ty vacuum leaks but it's running pretty well considering. I need to replace the engine mounts too as they are super soft.

  9. Finally got the old girl running, not sure exactly what the issue was but I replaced the carburetor with a rebuilt one, distributor cap, rotor, leads, adjusted timing, cleaned the spark plugs and it burst into life, still needs some minor timing adjustments and fine tuning on the carb but I'm stoked. Worst part was I couldnt take it on a test drive due to a new asphalt driveway only just been finished.

  10. Progress is happening on the rust!! WooT!! Also went to do finally assembly on subframe today and had a bit of a hiccup with some nuts and washers, even though I gave the nut and washers to the guy to match, he still got them wrong, cue RAGE QUIT. (probably exacerbated by cunt of a job it is to get the lower suspension arms in, 4 things have to line up and they don't) But at least I got the brakes back together.

  11. Picked up some good quality window tint from @Archetype. As expected I wasn't able to do a good job of the rear screen and I'm happy to pay someone to do that later on, but the sides went flawlessly and I'm so pleased I opted to tint the car. Should help heaps with it being an oven in summer. The car is all but complete and back together, things lefts are to cut back the orange peel and buff it aswell as fit the manual trans. l

  12. The EJ Holden moves under its own power, probably for the first time since 1994 and possibly 1990. Managed to get round to my mates place about half a k away and back. Found a water leak from it looks like the lower radiator hose. The brakes have a reasonable amount of travel and need a good shove but work OK. I'm going to have another go at adjusting up the rear brakes tomorrow. The steering isn't too heavy, not power steering but not bad. Lots of little but time consuming things to do. The electric fan is on all the time, I suspect the temperature sender has died, it's buried under the throttle body so that has to come out to check the sender. I installed my new H4 semi sealed beam headlights. They are flatter than the old fully sealed beams but worth it for the brightness. Lots still to do but massive step forward. I think this car is going to be lots of fun.

  14. hard to say exactly tbh. temps did drop once we'd sorted the timing issue, but they were getting better all the time. the more load and running it saw the better it got. so maybe a combo tight new motor and timing issue caused it? i did learn that you cant use the trigger wire to the coil as the trigger for your timing light because it gives a false reading. i dont know by how much, couple of degrees i would imagine. but it is false.

  15. Pulled the engine this morning.. Took all of about 30 minutes. Took it home and gave it a clean Before, After, doesn't look it but I can assure you it has a lot less oil on it.. After doing some reading I've come to the realisation that my sister probably cooked the engine, there should be an engine seal around the tinware and also the heater pipes weren't on either, according to the gurus that be on the webs the engine bay should be totally sealed otherwise the engine will overheat.. Went out to buzz bug this morning and he confirmed what I thought, was good to chat to someone that knows they're shit. Gonna send him a list through of stuff for the engine, he's also getting in a bunch of rust repair panels which will suit our kombi..

  16. I have been picking away at this radiator piping all week, my back heartily disapproves of grovelling on the concrete, I may have to find a crawler.. First thing I did was create something to make beads on that pipe, this seemed like a good idea but the pipe is 1.6mm wall thickness and quite resistant to change. Fortunately I have a large press, so this seemed a good way to do it; Works fucking sweet, just press and spin, press and spin etc. It is scary when you over do it and the two 8mm weld beads go pop, but otherwise uneventful. Then I just cracked on, some of these boys go complicated; Then I chucked them into place today; They have come up good, hopefully there are no leaks, I was in the zone when doing it but there is always room for a fuckup. A couple of pics up you can see the drain plug I put in a relatively protected spot, but I reckon a skid guard is on the cards regardless. You can also see the vent on the top of the rad which should help get the air out... I just have to get what was the side drawer face mounted on hinges, find a feed for the fan relay then bolt everything back together. Getting to the clutch slave will now be way more fun than it was. In other news I believe I have well and truly sorted the brake situation, things are in transit right now and I will post a pic when that package arrives.....

  18. done about a thousand Ks in It now and its heaps better. its still not fixed, i think crawling stop start traffic would be the death of it but its getting better all the time so ill just drive it more. it really wants to go, the motor feels heaps better now that its running a bit more freely. the tune is basically non existent for anything above very light throttle so its not exactly ground breaking as yet but next weekend i should be able to get the tune a bit better. also i have found a thermostat that opens at 76deg. stock is 82. i did some side by side testing and what was interesting was that these didnt actually open at the stated temperature, they opened about 5 degrees hotter than stated. its when you let the water cool and the temp comes down that the thermostat seems to close at about the design temp. differences between the two, the 76deg has a much larger aperture at full open than the stock one. i haven't installed the 76deg thermostat yet, ill do more Ks in the car first and see how things settle. its good to know that i have this up my sleeve though, it may be that in summer when the AC is cranking and im sitting in traffic i need to run the colder thermostat. i guess ill find out. 2020-05-31_04-44-11 by sheepers, on Flickr 2020-05-31_04-44-32 by sheepers, on Flickr 2020-05-31_04-44-40 by sheepers, on Flickr

  19. Been a VW fan for yonks, had both a 1960 and 64 Split window Kombies a 64 Beetle and a 74 ex Australian Army 9 seater Kombi, wish I'd kept one of those Kombies! Time has flown, ten years ago nearly I saved this old J & S buggy from the clutches of a brutish Banyan tree that was going to gobble up the old thing. The pan was gone to rust heaven, managed to save a few parts from the motor, what’s left of front end and transaxle are still at the whims of nature in the bush. As found….. As she sat under a tarp for nearly ten years…….. Been thinking and talking about doing this for an age, finally got the time, no work, so getting into it, she is going to be a worm burner, down with the snakes, as in low! Will be two person pedal powered with a central VW steering wheel so both occupants can share the driving. Will have brakes but only on the rear wheels of which there will be four, two driving, two coasting. Been hoarding (collecting) bits for her for a while, some old school head lights found in a junk shop, front bar scored at the local dump. Made up the windscreen from an old windy frame, can fold down safari style. Probably obvious, she's a bit heavy so have made her so the buggy body can come off and she can go as just the frame. Really want to keep the VW flavour, steering wheel, badges, chasing up some ratty hub caps, more on this later…..

  21. So I finally got around to mixing up some of the 65 Shore A polyurethane to see if it seems about right for engine mounts etc. I tipped some into the corner of the cut off bottom of a coke bottle. the results - aahhhh... It feels weird to give a review saying these mini boobs were about the right firmness but here we are. Definitely needs degassing, end up stirring a whole heap of bubbles into it that don't escape at all. This stuff is very gluggy compared to resin etc. It also took bloody ages to set. Like, more than a day. Very different to the solid stuff I used earlier which set in about 15 mins. I've been watching some stuff about bonding it to steel, sounds like you need to rough the surface with sandblasting, use a polyurethane friendly etch primer, then you'll get a really strong contact with the urethane poured against it. I guess only other thing is to make sure it's somewhat petrol/oil/temperature tolerant. I guess it would be seeing how many people use poly bushes for nearly everything. Will try find what sort of additive you can use to colour it.

  22. Havent done much for the last month or so as had a bit going on. Got the full new exhaust painted with heat paint and on this weekend, sounds primo and alot better than the one that was on it. Got some new Hawk HP Plus pads for the S6 Brake setup and have fitted that up, should be a good stopping package now! Just waiting on some new front brake lines and that can be bled up and car can hit the ground again. All booked in to get the rust sorted in a couple of weeks so will get that sorted next.

  25. Been running this round a bit, not too far from the house but just enough to get the motor warmed up. Runs better and better as the engine breaks in. Its loud and sounded a bit tinny so I cracked open the supertrapp and found an ok amount of baffle packing wrapped in masking tape. Brought some new packing which was a bit more like a cloud than a blanket so I packed that inside and wrapped it in the OG packing. The result was a much more bulkier baffle also upgraded the strapping with steel zip ties to hold it tighter. Since these are a Supertrapp style exhaust they have a heap of exhaust rings which are spaced with washers, the space between the rings lets the exhaust out. I ended up removing 3 to reduce the noise. Quite cool how adjustable it is. Anyways I’ll see what it all sounds like tomorrow as it got too late to fire it up.

  31. Whooohooo we have some progress, control as in steering in, also revisited the front end. Was going to have a rigid front end but thought what the heck, had the bits so went with suspension, see how she goes, if work out couple of bolts and she goes back to a solid set up! So you can steer her how about propulsion, mocked up the pedal position, the way things are looking they will sit lower. As I said up the top want to keep the VW theme rolling, so first VW bit a Ratty 60’s steering wheel. I live very isolated so you often fix and build things with what you have. Also as with most things I’m on a budget so best thing about this build so far what I’ve spent. Only items I’ve laid out cash on, some welding rods, the tyres, some spring washers and the steering wheel, all the rest scrounged from local tip, gotta be happy with that!

  33. So after a couple of big days finally got the rear end sorted, originally had the drive wheels out beyond the body. Revised this they now sit nicely in the space where the VW engine would have sat. So in a sense have the motor where it should be! Next sort out the chain drive, plan is to have two idlers up to the pedals. The outer wheels take some of the load, hoping most of the weight comes onto the middle drive wheels, all four have suspension, outers leaf springs, inners coils. Scored the outers off a children’s pram, the inners off an old school suspension mountain bike. After the drive system is sorted front end and steering, long way to go but getting there! Any tips criticism gratefully accepted.................?

We got the engine and gearbox in (no clutch) and the car rolling with all the parts either reinstall or inside it Need to reinstall the turbo wastegate Whole thing was a pain in the ass, also slightly fustrated with my mate who pulled the rear cradle and fuel tank out but didnt actually fix anything But at least its rolling so can be moved on the 17/18th July

  43. Hack-oss-ka-nundrum. As we know, KY had an overwhelming fit of Good Cuntary and sorted me a new boot badge from Japan after I gorilla'd mine. To be fair, it was epoxied on so I didn't really stand a chance. First thing I noticed was that the new one had four mounting pins where as the old one was held on with double sided tape & glue. I assumed it was just an old badge that had got damaged so cleaned the old glue, etc off the boot to find the holes. No holes.... I had a check from behind, as well as i could through the holes in the frame and there is sign that they've been welded up or anything. All very strange. It looks like it's an earlier boot lid, but even then most of them seem to have a badge, even the 4 cylinder cars. Never mind, guess I just bite the bullet and drill holes in it. The badge just clicks in blind ( if I get the drill size right) which maybe explains why the original one got broken in the past as I can't see how you'd not break it trying to get it off. Better get me some brave pills and a decent ruler. Gulp.

  46. Pretty determined to get this done now. So. as I mentioned in the previous posts dating back to 2010 this overheats at speeds under about 50 kmh which is a huge pain in the ass. For what ever reason I never addressed this, maybe I thought if I ignored it the problem would go away. It hasn't. When I first built the car I spent a lot of money on a 5 core radiator soldered to the AP top and bottom tanks. Made a fan shroud and went to the effort of making the factory fan fit the 383. There just isn't room to fit an electric fan. Anyway because it's automatic I put a big trans cooler in front of the radiator , called it good, and never gave it another thought. Recently I started thinking of things that I could do to solve the issue without spending lots, I had a look at the cooler and decided to move it away from the radiator incase it's causing a restriction. I got it off today and it must flow almost zero air through. So I've cut the mount up and started mounting it inside the L.H inner guard just behind the headlight. Possibly not the best place for a trans cooler but I have a trick up my sleeve on that front that I will share with you later. I'll make a basic shield out of ACM to stop the cooler getting dirty/damaged by crap thrown off the wheel' Just out of curiosity I did the maths to work out how much radiator core the cooler was covering. Lots as it turns out. Just over 1/3 of the radiator core right in the center in ftont of the fan too, it makes me hopeful that I've found the problem. Anyway, that's enough about that. Who wants to hear a sharn? Yeah I thought you might. So here's the story about how I came to own this car. When I moved to Christchurch from Auckland circa 2003 the thing that was foremost in my mind was buying a Valiant, I wanted a VF or a VG most of all (which is another sharn in its self). I'd gone to the bank and organised a loan and was all set to buy a project starter. Anyway every Thursday on the way to work I stopped and brought a copy of the Buy Sell Exchange and went straight to the C for Chrysler then the V for Valiant section, I looked at a few VF/VGs but they were all heavily boganised, I remember one guy with a flat black VG with a 245 hemi doing a hektik neutral drop and then overshooting his driveway because the brakes were fucked on the road test. I wasn't too keen on that one. I saw the AP5 for $500 In the paper one Thursday and ignored it, it wasn't the shape I wanted. It was re advertised the next week for the same price it was a bit of an odd add, not much information etc. My friend Steve saw the AP5 add and went straight to %100 pine. Steve was about 15 years older than me, was a full blown foamer when it came to old Aussie cars. On his insistence I called the number and arranged to go have a look. the old lady who answered the phone was a bit vague about it but I got her address and went for a look. When I got to the house the AP was nowhere to be seen, It was in a garage behind the house, the shrubs had overgrown the driveway making it about as wide as a foot path. The AP was sitting by its self in the middle of a concrete block double garage with almost nothing else in it. The car had been brushpainted with white house paint and was sitting on four flat crossplys. It was in pretty good condition, was totally original, and had been embalmed in white house paint. I knew straight away that I wanted to own it. I told the old lady that yep I'd take it, could she hold on while I went up to the cash machine and got some money out for her. She looked very disappointed and told me that four young men wearing black jerseys had come and looked at it that morning, had said they wanted it because it would make a good street stock and had told her they would be back later that day. Looking back, it was probably Bart and his mates. Anyway I started to panic a bit, no way I was going to miss out and let it become a street stock so I offered her $600 which she declined, so I offered $750, she looked shocked but still declined. I said I'd make it $1000 and get the money to her that day. She said I'd better talk to her husband who was inside. The car had been her husbands mothers car and he'd held on to it after she had died in the mid 80s? He was very attached to the car as I could only imagine. He wasn't coping well with the sale and was basically hiding inside. When he was told that someone was offering double the asking price who didn't want to wreck the car he was as pleased as punch and we sealed the deal. It was then I found out that his mum had owned the car since new, and that he had every document and receipt relating to it from the initial purchase to the present time. I went to the cash machine, got out $500 (all the machine would give out LOL) and told them both I'd be back tomorrow to get the car. Before I left the old fella said "if I liked Valiants I'd really like what they had in the garage attached to the house. He opened the door and there was a Subaru Vortex , I very quickly resisted the urge to say I'd rather drink a warm fish milkshake than look at the vortex, luckily it wasn't the draw card he was referring to. Next to the Vortex was a mint orange and black VH770 charger. I pined so hard it was perfect unrestored about 50,000 miles from new. Dam I pined so hard! It absolutely wasn't for sale, if it was it would have been far more than I could muster. i often wonder what happened to that car. I really hope it's still safely tucked up in a nice garage safe and sound somewhere in Christchurch Anyway Steve and I went back the next day pumped the tyres up, jacked the car up because the old tyres had glued them selves to the concrete floor, and pushed it as fast as we could through the overgrown hedge down the drive. I did have a photo of the day I got it home, it's pretty shitty and double exposed. Anyway that's my sharn about the day I brought an AP5. Heres some pics of all the old documents that I stashed away in a safe place. They make for amusing reading.
