  1. Iv done nothing to this but buy stuff- probably won't work on it again until the sheds done, but we have a pretty good kit of parts ready for assembly, Narrowed front beam, full window rubber kit, door rubber kit, chrome trim, front air assisted shocks, narrowed front beam, new front torsion springs, caster shims, rear side windows, steering dampener, side running board things, plus the joints etc mentioned previously. Parts prices for these things are definitely a huge bonus, very reasonable compared to anything else I have been part of before. Will be EPIC once assembly can properly begin, is going to be like a big model set

  3. This would have been in '85. It was from Oakura, white with 2 gears available on the column shift. Rust holes behind the back doors you could fit a hand into. We drove it back to Hawera around the mountain to avoid the popo with only 2nd and 4th gears. I heard the engine blew up shortly after I sold it. That was a 1600 crossflow that i put in with a floor change box, I didnt have many tools so I cut the hole for the gearstick with a cold chisel and a big hammer. The paint was terrible, I put more than 4 litres of bog into it along with some roofing iron to support things. I learnt how much I don't like painting things when the hours of what you thought were spectacular prep ended up with a sweet grapefruit finish. Hopefully I have learnt some things since then.

  4. Well back on the dyno at protune yesterday, made some good power (175rwkw 445nm at 11psi) but found an oil leak, seems like this car just dont like dynos haha, at least i was only cleaning up an oil puddle on the dyno and not engine pieces Got home and checked it out, pulled the clutch dust cover...bonus its not the rear main rope seal. Waiting on an engine support bar to arrive and il drop the sump clean it up Gonna weld in a couple of sump breathers and go to town with the rtv Oh and all before drag day...

  6. Speaking of industrial computers this was driving our batching plant until we had it rebuilt 2 years ago. AMD K5 PR133 and 8MB RAM was probably overkill for what it was doing:

  7. Was only getting 3-9V, messaged @Raizer and he figured out I needed to earth the stator, now it’s 6-13v A+messenger fault finding Took the cub round the block, melted the fairing pretty good (need to bolt it in I guess) wants to pop wheelies in first A+ half way round it started chocking and I saw the filter wasn’t on right, tried to mcgyver it with the key as had no tools, until I remembered the factory tool set! idled it home and took a few attempts of carb cleaning and swearing to sort it made it all legit with a speedo.... great idea @Truenotch still didn’t sort any tyres-might try and same day some tomorrow

  10. Ever watched a awesome movie at home by yourself and then have no one who is at all interested to tell them about it. well here is the potential game changer mate And this came to mind after watching some great car films within the last 6 months and thought it would be great if it became an 0S event. to bring some like minded people together so my idea is that get a whole bunch of Auckland OS members together for a oldschool car themed movie evening and the idea would be sometime in the weekend evenings unfortunately can not host the event but im sure someone else could but can provide shit sharns seen as OS in auckland has no other meeting events on let me know on your ideas and thoughts Cheers MATE

  11. Old disc was sloppy as fuck on the drive spline, was pretty sure that's where the noise came from. Can't wait to get my hands on another engine to do a full rebuild and port, can see so much room to improve on the factory castings!! Managed to get hold of the specs for the factory Suzuki R-T disc, so after checking and double checking I got cutting The worst of the noise is gone, thinking one of the bearings is responsible for what's left now. Cutting the disc has given a decent gain, it's still not fast but it's a LOT of fun to fang about in town at least. Need to pull a few degrees of timing out, hearing a bit of pinging at WOT and under high load.

  12. Well that's been robbing HP for longer than it needed to a Cheap China had already been installed, not to sure what was wrong with the OEM carb so we've frankenstiened both together (top off the Hitachi & body stayed in place seems to go heaps better for now! that's the Accelerator Pump seal btw, scary pulling out in traffic, anything below 40kph was walking pace! I tried a can of Carb cleaner, draining fuel (in case of water) & still have my eye on the Black Friday deals for a complete carb

  14. Hi guys -I stepped down from Auckland Area rep a while ago due to having a bunch of shit going on at the time that I felt like I was drowning in. Apologies for being so slack. Still don’t have a OS car that works but eh. -would any Aucklanders still be keen to attend unofficial burger meets now the weathers getting nicer?

  20. So I flicked the 944. It wasn't something I was intending to do, but a fella on the Porsche Transaxle NZ Facebook page popped up a 'WTB' post and I responded. With a high price. He initially declined, I didn't budge an inch and then a few days late the wife had mysteriously allowed him to purchase the car. He drove across from Tauranga, was rapt with it, and drove it home. Am I upset? No not really, I didn't get especially attached to that one since it burnt me (and my wallet) a lot during my near 2-years of ownership. Decided I wanted another DC2R, some of you might remember my 96-spec I had about 2007-8 and came along to a couple of NZH NIMM's in etc etc way back then. I put the word out that I wanted another one, and happened to meet Tim Bell (unsure if he's on the forum yet?) around this time through some of the other Hamilton fellas and a group chat. Tim being both an excellent human and the owner of a minty fresh DC2R put the word out among of his Type R friends, and turned up this car. DC2R Phone (1)-Edit by Richard Opie, on Flickr It's a 2000 Integra Type R-X. The 'X' is basically the final run of these cars, from late '99 through to mid 2000. You all know what a 98-spec car had over a 96-spec. But the R-X added to the list with a few more luxury mod cons. Power folding mirrors, 6-speaker audio, blue-tinged faux carbon trim, privacy glass, bla bla bla. Basically the best spec they came in, unless you reckon no options at all is the best. Which is kind of is. But anyway. It took a little bit of negotiation. The seller got semi-cold feet about the whole thing, had a change of heart, then another, and I ended up buying it for a fairly premium price. But it's clean and tidy, with absolutely minimal molestation. When I first viewed it, the car was on TE37, had a Recaro SPG on a fixed rail, was running a Neptune-chipped ECU via adaptor harness (yay no splices etc) but I was happy enough to not bother with all of that as I wanted as close to stock as possible. As it stands, the car has a Mugen Gen 1 exhaust (cat delete via welded in stainless pipe), and Ohlins adjustable coilovers as it's only mods. Which is fine. Oh and a very terribad Japan-spec hodgepodge stereo of shitness. DC2R Phone (2)-Edit by Richard Opie, on Flickr But the good! It's clean, straight, has new rotors, Endless pads, 160000km on the odo, a VERY clean engine inside and out, great even compressions, the suspension has $1700 worth of recent rebuild receipts, excellent black Recaros, tidy dash and is the perfect base for what I want. Actually I need to speak to @64valiant about replacing the bolster on one side of the drivers Recaro. DC2R Phone (4)-Edit by Richard Opie, on Flickr My plans? Chuck some nice fresh audio at it - I've bought a stack of Focal speakers, have a nice Image Dynamics amp and an Alpine bluetooth headunit for it. Tidy up the alarm/install a new one, refurbish the tired OEM wheels, go through all of the tarnish fasteners beneath the bonnet and replace with nice fresh ones. You get the idea. DC2R Phone (5)-Edit by Richard Opie, on Flickr I'll leave you with these phone shots for now - once I have the wheels done and dusted I'll be heading out for some proper shots with my big boy camera at some stage. Nice to be back though. Forgot how addictive these wee engines really are. And how rattly and generally shitty they are/racecar.

  23. I would be wary, tape them up or something and then use mechanical means to remove rust and paint around the seams. You are using the easy/good method for at home paint removal, works great for big flat areas but usually you need to throw the grinder or sand blaster etc into the mix for some areas you cant really wash away the stripper and acid. I have cracked open seals where phosphoric acid has been used and as you cannot really flush it out you get this white powder build up which seems to promote more rust as the acid is never neutralised.

  24. How careful do I need to be with paint stripper and seams? I am planning on paint stripping (clean off with water), treating with phosphoric acid (wash off with water), rubbing back with scotch-brite/prepsol then painting with 2K epoxy primer. I was reading some threads online that recommended maintaining min 20mm from any seams to stop the stripper tracking. Provided I wash the stripper off carefully with water, is this something I need to be concerned with? How about with the phosphoric acid, do I need to do similar with this?

  34. I’ve had this IBM model M keyboard for a year or so but some random keys don’t work. Took it apart which involves cutting the plastic weld rivet things. Thought it was probably a broken membrane trace. I think this one on the edge is probably the problem, looks corroded. Tried a resistance reading and get nothing. Maybe one of those conductive paint pens would work?

  35. if you have a current working knowledge of old pc gear, you should advertise as a cnc repairman, there is a huge amount of os/2 and drdos machines with obscure isa motion control boards still running that everyone's too scared to do minor pc maintenance work on. soon all the xp (sp0) based machines with netbios comms to the motion side will start needing stuff swapped to keep them going for the next 10 years, which is even easier - and all the current crusty old dudes that still remember how it works will be out of the game. Even basic stuff like being aware of the ide jumper settings when swapping discs is seen as magic.

  36. Yep we've got a place at Riverton so plan is to try it out there. Two rivers converge at the mouth (Pourakino and Aparima) so want to chuff up the Pourakino for a look (the one on the left). Being tidal you get dolphins chasing mullet up past the bridge, and target is big silver sea-run trout full of whitebait... Plus if I go upstream I can merrily float back down to the pub when it conks out (in a film of rainbow coloured water)...

  39. Back to the engine, 120psi-ish and zero acceleration in fifth or on any incline wasn't going to cut it!! Soo back to the lathe!! That's the factory 41mm bore head, added a 2mm squish band to take it out to the 45mm it needed to be to suit the cylinder and also took .5mm off the face for luck! Can see just how much deeper the aftermarket finned soup bowel is! And the plug after pesting about in Auckland, looking a touch rich if anything. So added another .45mm base gasket, .4mm head gasket and ended up at .86mm squish with the refreshed factory head fitted, looking for some .2 copper sheet to make another head gasket out of to gain just a little bit more nang. Much better! And I think it would have come up a bit higher if I could have got the rubber push in fitting to seal better in the plug hole. Drastic improvement to power, shift at the right time to keep it on pipe and it will pull to the top of fifth now! BUT now that it has compression it wants a lot more fuel!! Have to order some pilot jets from MikuniOZ for it as once warmed up it is running HOT and has the worst lean hang I've ever come across Suzuki used a non adjustable version of the Mikuni VM16 so there's no screw to fiddle with to try and make it happier in the mean time, so a little A50 waits again as I've put too much into this thing just to melt it down in the quest to pest! Oh and as it turns out, having more than 6 and 8 or so psi in the tyres really improves acceleration... Who'd of figured... Think this post has the engine work pretty much up to date, until the bits I ordered yesterday arrive in NZ at least So here's a pic of @Archetype hard at work transforming the whole look of the bike

  42. So i tried making my own coil on plug system with a piece of plywood with magnets glued in it in the front of the cam, an arduino pro mini with sensors mounted on the front of that, a sheet of plastic (Made from melted milk bottles & bottle caps) with copper screwed to it to distribute power i know those aren't proper ferrite toroids but thaat's just too bad. Wrapped in a tin foil tape to try & keep interference out (probably keeps it in?) The cool kids have MS paint graphs & stuff so i'll try be be cool too. The red curve is a rough approximation of how the standard magneto behaves. The green one could be programmed any way i like. If i put a high(er) compression overhead head valve head on it, then i can program a curve to take advantage of it. It'll also make old grumpy people sad. Most people just use a distributor conversion.

  43. "Straight through" Holley NH carb's share many parts with the economy version carb'. Same basic thing, but the economy version had more restriction. I'd be tempted to smooth the venturi a little, as it has a rough finish, but don't want to mess it up. I'll choose to believe that rust pitting help the mixture. So i filled in some pitting around the rim of the bowl seal with an epoxy. Used white metal normally used for engine bearings to build up work throttle shafts. Drilled small holes in the broken castings and poured white metal into them to build up the areas where casting had broken off. Built up the worn nut with more white metal. First i tried to replace the bronze throttle link with chunks cut from a worn bronze bushing, that turned out to be fragile. So i riveted and soldered, with more white metal (more resilient to vibration than solder due to no lead content) copper strips. I choose to believe i have improved this carb's condition compared to when i found it.

  44. I've actually done heaps to this, like; - source and fit factory airbox and intake pipe (as seen in pics earlier). - fitted nice new K&N filter. - wheel refubishment finished, tyres remounted etc. - replaced dashboard with one that wasn't cut up where the stereo sits in the DIN slot, also a nicer dashtop than the one in there. - installed new audio. Alpine head unit, Focal components up front, Focal 2-way coaxials in the rear. - existing door trims had been hacked to fit some dubious audio, so replaced those with some sourced from same car new dash came from. Full clean/shampoo of upholstery brought them up A1! - rear interior stripped, everything cleaned, all fasteners sourced and replaced (had maybe 1/3 of what was supposed to be holding the side trims in) replaced and there's not 677864254% less rattles. - front bumper resprayed by Brendan at Platinum refinishers, no more stonechips or cracked paint. Scrapes on underside of lip reappeared pretty quickly while negotiating driveway though. - full Royce-spec paint correction and wax. Including ceramic coating on the wheels (OK I did that bit...). - new OEM Type R stickers on quarters, it had non-OEM ones on there and they weren't put on straight. - boss kit acquired to fit my Personal Neo Grinta wheel (although the plan is a red stitch MOMO Monte Carlo in time). - OEM optional rear strut brace fitted, and shock covers cut and trimmed as per the OEM template you received if you bought this new in period. Did it like they did in 1998 basically. - replaced rear boot carpet with a bloody mint example Mr. Jimmy Lucas scored from Zebra for me. - bought a replacement OEM key cos well, choice, and available. - replacement foam inner for the drivers side Recaro has been purchased ex-UK, just need to install/get @64valiant to help me install. - sourced and fitted an OEM clock, mine had a blanking plate fitted but the Type R-x was supposed to have a clock (loom was there etc) Then I got word Honda NZ had a single, solitary one of these NLA Type R cam covers sitting in their stock. So I thought "that's pretty flippin' neat" and I bought it because magpie. Haven't fitted it yet. 2019-06-24_01-57-46 by Richard Opie, on Flickr So we're sort of nearly where I want it to be. Some stock suspension on it's way from Japanland also. I actually haven't taken any other photos of it yet.

  45. Did front wheel bearings, bought new front beam bearings, some other random stuff, new front calipers, greg has some new front brake hoses for me and so once i get some wheels and a new front spring pack (some of my leafs were broken) i can get it on the ground and rolling. A few things before its drive time but lists getting shorter Wheels, steering box, rear side windows, window seals, motor off @64valiant and be sweet for a drive i think i also bought a turbo legacy as a donor for a one-day engine swap dream project. Thw legacy was being sold by a mate for $750 with blown trans and 140,000km, seemed like a bargain and couldn't help it.
