  1. Day 4 & 5 The long Drive Home Passing though the Mrs hometown. Stopped off at the FILs place in the 'Ding for the night on the way back. The Mrs put her name on the next project, its been in the FILs shed for 20 years, runs the engine with 4 on the floor and buckets from the Torana her brother rolled when he was 16 . 2. Super mission to OldSchool Nats over the last weekend plus a couple of days either side. Over 1500km (Auckland to Featherston a lot of driving around then return) including grass skids and only lost the rear muffler (easy fix), used ~15l/100km until getting a wheel alignment on the way back in Taupo which dropped it to ~12l/100km. Used about 500ml of oil and no water. Came back with a couple of very unexpected trophies, and only a small list of minor tweaks, so very very happy with how it went. Anyway, pics or it didnt happen! CONVOY! Cruising though the Central Plateau Sillouette Split off from the convoy at Vinegar Hill, had some errands in Palmhole and took the Pahiatua Track Finally arrived at the camp around 7.30, so, to the pub!

  6. new house time. our house is small, leaky, cold and old and we've wanted to do something about it for quite a while now. thanks to a long journey which included astronomical increases in building costs, council changing their mind on things multiple times and heaps of other fun things it has taken 3 years to get to this point. but here we are, about to build a new house which was supposed to start last November. the plan? well, we're extending the front a bit and joining onto the garage. to get there we have to remove the current house and start pretty much from scratch. the floor structure of the existing will stay but nothing else. one of my jobs is to remove the current house. in theory the build will take about 8 months. im doing some steel work and a few bits here and there but the bulk of the work will be done by the builders and subcontractors heres the existing floor plan and the finished floor plan. existing floorplan by sheepers, on Flickr new layout by sheepers, on Flickr

  7. I had plans to get the Niva ready months ago, but work had different plans, I finally dropped the engine off to have all the vitals tickled, while its not going to be a 'performance' build, it will be a darn sight better than previous, i'm hoping to at least have compression back! With Otago rally on this weekend, I was hoping to use the drive there and back to run the engine in, sadly the weather has been absolutely terrible and in my crampt shed with not enough light, achievement has been low. Utilising the parts cleaner obtained off Bart, I've sparkled up the underside bits, ultimately, only the wof man will ever see it... Threw on a lick of speed enhancing red Multifunction 2105 workbench: Forgot how much I enjoy assembling engines, checking, cleaning measuring and torquing, no pics cos its dark, but the block is back together and awaiting a break in the clouds to lift it all into place I've also sealed up a 5 speed box I rebuilt ages ago, 4 just wasn't enough! Sitting out the rain I got onto the computer and drew up a head gasket, my sources have all dried up on standard thicknesses so i'll run a thick one until I get one waterjet cut from copper to give a hoon, hopefully it works......

  12. Well, at last I have a large grey pontiac in my garage. Still a couple things to paint like the skirts and the detail on the 'waterfall' trim that goes over the hood and trunk. Grill has been rechromed and will do the front bumper too plus a few randoms like indicators and tail lights, rear bumper is still pretty good. Have a bit of a list of stuff to do, now at that stage where I have to decide if I just want to get back on the road asap or drag it out doing more stuff. I'd like to do as much Dynamat as I can afford, at the very least in the doors/rear quarters. I had a felt kit and new rubbers for the front quarter windows to go in but this didn't happen when it was apart as I 'd hoped it might. Might be the time to pull doors apart and do this, and rechrome the quarter window frames as they're a bit rusty. Hmmm. Anyway, here's a couple of random pics. Since I have such a list of things to do it seemed logical to put the venetians in for a test fit! Priorities... Not 100% sure on them, think they'll work when more chrome is back on car. Currently look like too much of a feature. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/53947-shifters-51-pontiac-chieftain-talky-stuff/

  15. lol, yes, near new tyres half worn already. I didnt quite get onto it before we left for nats they were 6deg toe out? each side (were even tho so it drove straight, just was funky in the corners) and the wheel alignment pulled them back to 2deg toe in? (cant recall but the opposite way to what it was) each side so 8deg out each wheel or 16deg total. Im blaming this for lack of placing in Grasskhana. (i coulda been a contender!) Caster (2deg) and Camber (0 to slightly negative) were pretty good. With the rain on the way back it was pretty sketchy driving, so made the call to stop and get er done.

  16. Made a bit more progress on this thing. Fired up the car and noticed fuel leaking out of one of the stock injectors. Decided this was a good time to replace them. I scored some 550CC side injectors for a decent price, these are the newer style side feeds so you need an adapter kit to fit them to the early model Z32s. I ordered a kit online then threw them in. Stripped off plenum, removed injectors and fuel rails. Installed new injectors and adapter kits in the rails and then put back on the engine. As the injectors are the newer style I also had to replace the factory Z32 injector plugs with new style ones. I scored a second hand set cut from an old nissan loom and wired in. Thes plugs are so much nicer than the original Z32 ones which are a bitch to unplug and crack when you look at them. Plenum and other hardware reinstalled Due to new larger injectors the ECU needs to be modified to suit. You can socket the factory ECU and burn a new chip for it but I decided to go with the Nistune solution. Once your factory ECU is socketed you simply plug it in and have a fully programmable ECU. You can see the Nistune chip plugged in to the socket, you need to solder a few additional power wires and its sorted. Nistune are always adding functionality to their system. They now include features like flexfuel/e85 compatability, launch control and boost by gear etc. You simply tune via the laptop plugged into the factory nissan consult port. Thay have a pretty comprehensive software package to go along with it. Ready to go back in the car. Then its a case of firing up the laptop, using the resize injector feature in the software to enter the new injector size and you are away. There is additional tuning required to some settings to get idle and mixtures completely correct but the car fired up fine after the resize was done. Installed an Innovative MTX-L wideband to try and stop me turning the engine to flames I also installed a new alloy radiator as the old stock one I had found was pretty sketchy. Had to make up some new top mounting brackets. I also tracked down a factory fan shroud so chucked that on also. I managed to find another rear hatch that had the factory spoiler on it. Its in pretty rough condition but decided to fit it , I think I prefer the look over the wingless version. It will need some tidying up in the future. Still have interior stuff to tidy, front lip to install and lots of tuning to do...

  19. I used some bunnings degreaser shit on a mega grotty BMW head. It looked like it had come out of someone's arse. Container said not for aluminium. So I applied it pretty much undiluted from the bottle. Obviously didn't leave it on too long. Head came out looking like it had just been cast. Spotless.

  22. I picked up this a bout a month ago from Penrose (not Wanganui!) Ended up getting it sent from Ralph Moore Autoglass in Sydney who had one in stock, and they shipped it with an MG one for some other bloke to halve our shipping. This week i finally got it installed. Cracking the parts cats screen has not only been a very expensive fuckup but also meant ive pretty much missed cruising this summer. I reused the old rubbers, i cleaned them pretty good but they are a bit cracked and stretched in the corners so i hope they dont leak Sorting out the best surrounds, and had just enough unbroken clips, less 2 And on Pretty happy about the close fit to the opening given all the work i did around the screen top and bottom (not so much about the runs, but thats what accessories to hide them are for!) And paint run hider back on Too much or? Nothing like a pending >1200km road trip to procrastinate on sorting the list of wee jobs to sort and a few miles to put on, before hopefully a WoF Next weekend! If not then id better get the brakes on the 125 sorted! Here is a pic to remind me why I aught to pull finger:

  23. So the last thing i need right now is another project, but this came up for far to good of a deal to pass up on so i jumped on it. Its just parked in my parents shed and will stay like this for a while until i save up some money to throw at it / get other projects out of the way / have spare time. But keen to start hoarding some parts soon anyway. So as it is, its a 1986 BMW R80 G/S. Shes pretty rough, but runs mint. It was stolen and recovered and has a broken ignition and rattle can paint and has sat outside for a year or two and is pretty tatty. I went to the cop shop and verified the last registered owner and have a letter from him and the cops so hopefully revin shouldn't be too much drama. Does anyone have any experience revinning a modified bike? I love how its a GS as it has spoked wheels which i think is lush, im unsure if this is a genuine Paris Dakar model as they usually had a dirt bike type front guard and a single man seat with extra rack, this does however have a genuine Paris Dakar model 32l tank, under the paint it sill has the original decals which can be seen on the shitty facebook photo from the ad. anyway here is bike- At this stage i am totes unsure about which direction to go, at first a thought maybe restore to original adventure spec and do lush rides like this - but then i thought nahhhhh cos its missing a few original things like the pack racks, ignition, hi rise exhaust and that just does't look so coooool. At the moment im pretty sold on doing a scrambler build, but still road legal and comfy and complete enough so some awesome touring rides. Id like to keep stock airbox. At the moment im just unsure if ill keep the Paris Dakar tank (which is very large and may be hard to get the whole bike matching it when scrambler spec and actually look lush) or go down to a normal sized R80 tank. Id be pretty keen to keep the dakar colours with the white tank and orange seat. here is some inspiration anyway, also, please tell me all of the things, i am new to these airhead thingys / never built a bike before

  24. There's a new Burgerfuel opening in Hamilton and we've been invited to head along and get free burgers! They will be having a cook off at the new store where all the staff practice cooking burgers and test the equipment before the actual opening date on the Monday following. The owner has extended a personal invite to oldschool.co.nz to come along and display our cars and enjoy free burgers. They'll also be bringing along their 1971 Ford Ranchero ute to display with our cars. The details are: Burgerfuel Rototuna Saturday 22 April from 11am until 1pm. FREE BURGERS There's also a possibility of moving our meets out to Rototuna, so we should head down there and scope it out. Who's keen?

  32. This was an easy project. I drew it on a sheet of plywood, used a protractor to find angles...went to an exhaust shop and the dude looked over his shoulder a couple times and said "you do it, but do it quick before my boss gets back". He only charged me for the steel, and it only took 5 minutes to bend and expand the joins. Next time I go there I'll take him a box of piss for being such a GC. Kj

Live in Queenstown area, have done so for a few years now and just trying to branch out and find more people into cars, and potentially make some new friends along the way. Would be keen for meet, cruise etc and had been thinking of starting something locally within the Queenstown area where we got together every couple of weekends on friday evening for a quick cruise or meet at pub, carpark etc. Anything already exist like this that I've been missing out on?

  34. Pictureless update. On the noise issue I was mucking around with a piece of tube in the workshop with little miss 3. She found a small pipe with dry mud stuck up it so got a screwdriver and started cleaning it out. It's good when she's occupied. Anyway I blocked one end and drilled a few holes in an attempt to make a silencer. Half hour later I get it done, start the kart and jam it in to test. Quietens it down a little, that'll do. Miss 3 has her piece cleaned out by this stage and says "try mine daddy". Turns out her idea worked much better. Lesson learnt- Keep it simple.

  36. Had some time this weekend to keep tackling the interior. Managed to get the door sills plates, door seals, kick pods, trunk panels, c-pillar panels, cubby, e-brake cover, and steering column cover cleaned, and dyed black. Also got around to installing my new tachometer, steering wheel, front speakers, rear speakers, and headunit. I bought another cluster surround to see if I could deal with the poorly installed old headunit, but the one I purchased was from a coupe, which has a slightly different dash, so I had to use my original one. I drilled out the old cruise control plate and pitched it, then fabbed up a block off plate out of some acrylic we had kicking around the shop. I'm going to use it as a spot to install my phone mount. I also took out the severly weather beaten old 5.25" speakers in the rear and modified the panel, plus the sheet metal behind to accommodate a set of Rockford Fosgate 6.5" 3 way speakers I had from my old Subaru. I also mounted them with a foam BoomMat basket on the backside to give them a bit more clarity. Sound system sounds great, just needs some low end. After I get around to mounting my celica seats in, I'm going to go shopping for a slim subwoofer to put under the passenger's seat. Still needs some work on the interior. I still need to figure out what I'm going to do with the cracked dashpad, and dye the rest of the brown black. I also tried to remove the fake wood section around the climate control, but it is stuck in place, so I may just leave it as is.

  38. Longest exhaust build ever! What a stupid idea it was to design it like this haha. So far has 5 pairs of flanges on each side if you include the ones at the end of the headers. Will have another pair after the diff as well. Got some flexi's and welded them in, as well as the rest of it. Need to put the tray back on now and see where the rest of the exhaust can run out the back. Made some mounts, after making them incorrectly to start with. Had the rubber hanging under tension where-as it should be compressing, otherwise it would most likely tear the rubber in half. Also made some gussets for the 4 link brackets since they didn't quite look strong enough. Might make some to tie in the other side as well. Need to make a start on the fuel tank soon. Any recommendations on an in-tank fuel pump to use? Don't really know much about them, 255LPH should be enough? Tank will be about 220mm deep if that matters.

  41. This thing popped up on Trade Me on Friday afternoon, and by Saturday morning id had a good look and pressed buy now (including delivery). I havnt got it quite yet so fingers crossed i dont get bumped by a silly offer as there were 5 questions already and 3 other people coming that day. Dude is a bit of a character and has plenty of very cool cars but hes moving so (some of) it gots to go. Its mostly complete, just missing one of two chrome strips on one door, and the tail lift glass is perspex. It also has a broken tail light but i think the more common sedan ones will fit . It has rust of course, but nowhere near as much as i would have thought, but where it was stored was pretty damp and the worst is around the roof edge, and one hole in the drivers floor/sill from a bump from underneath i think. All the doors, panels and tail gate etc is really good and the rego is on hold. Engine hasnt run for years, and is a 2300cc inline six with a single dual throat weber that produced a claimed 80kW @ 5300 rpm and 184Nm @ 3000 rpm when new. Some youtubing of 2300S Coupes show that the engine definitely has some potential! Also has bench seats, 4 speed column change and patina. Plan is to fix the rust, repaint the roof, clear coat the rest, lower and roll. If plan A of recommissioning the existing driveline doesn't work out, i'm open to something silly just so as long as its I6. Cars history (as i understand it) is that its a low milage car, and one of only a few (2-5) RHD models in NZ. Sign writing (and blue repaint over burgundy) was for Nautilus Marine of Napier, after which it was in a big private collection there, then bought buy the current owner to do up and turn into a caravan towing cruiser, but over taken by too many other projects. Pics below are from trade me: Discuss: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/49262-azzurros-1966-fiat-duemilatrecento-familiare-discussione/

  44. Long time no post! Unfortunately haven't raced my car this season at all - was about 6 months behind the offseason rebuild due to having to focus on finishing my old house, selling & shifting to a new one. Kindly however I was offered a drive a couple of times, then basically the whole of the season of 81c - Higgins Chassis with Hartley Holden V6. Owned by Trevor Lineham from Nelson (Prepped by Blaine Blythe, & Gary of Baldman mechanical) The car had a update at the start of the season, and really run flawlessly for the season - only 1 gearbox and a flat battery, minor steel work. Had my best results to date in the car with a second and some thirds. Definitely well on the pace and handles very well indeed! Considering I still wouldn't call myself a experienced racer - managing .3 of a second off the leaders quickest laps in my best placed results Im quite happy with that result indeed. Anyway; End of last season I took the car up to Blenheim for the Eve of Destruction meeting, Syncro's in the gearbox were on the way out going into the meeting, come meetings end I had blown the input shaft, and sustained some chassis damage - this was in part due to the design alterations made to fit the Falcon - oversights/lack of experience left some weak spots. Steering pump failed mid corner , locked up and spun round, then collected by another car head on and tweaked the chassis in two places (Top & bottom angled rails on the RH side only) Unfortunately I've since lost the damage photo's. However basically I decided to chop the whole lot off at the radiator and start again with laminate top, bottom and both sides A little heat was required here to straighten the bottom rail; Because I feel jewish throwing away all that steel I saved some; Laminated the steel in preparation; Tacked in place, squared it up; Added the braces, shock mounts; Fish plated rail joins top & bottom, laminated the LH top rail to give more strength for the manifold scallop; Gusseted the rear end (due to my chassis's width I decided its a good idea for the lack of weight it adds), plated on the chassis side, but not the bumper side Bought a new body, bonnet , Colin Summerton folded a wing up for me.. I put the skills I learnt to use reglassing the body, bonnet lower (its all about the fit!), moved the scoop up, back and over to suit the new carb Bonnet is waiting the final signwriting, but the car is otherwise now complete again, waiting to be primed, fired up for next season. Gary spent half a day teaching me the ins and outs of putting together the HQ gearbox's (I have several spares now) The new Colour scheme photo's will have to wait till next season now!

  47. Went to wagnats Was fucking rad as predicted Vans now jacked up on axle stands with the front of the engine and sump coming off. Engine has had a bit of an odd noise for a while which I have put down to a combo of a timing chain rattle and Rockers needing adjusting, So have a full timing chain kit coming, At the same time, going to remove sump and clean any build up of crud, seeing as I bought a full gasket set from ozzy for fuck all. Today while pulling it apart I noticed there was a bit of crank thrust movement, so will also do the thrust bearings while I have the sump off, My guess is they will be like, $4.50 anyway. Other than that, just a generally tidy up for a 250km motor, new water pump, oil and filter, check plugs, new coolant, so in short, a hardcore service lol. Anyway pictureless updates are for amatures Rad, will Actually take some pictures of the engine tomorrow I guess, because thats heaps more fun right! Peace.

  48. wee bit more done, lots of fiddly jobs as i find, fix and bodge bits to reattach. After the oil in air filter drama of last time i tried to turn this around, I installed a catch can on the pcv valve to catch the oil before the carb and managed to get it backed into position. Squinting out in the light of day. I was having some real trouble with the wiring/column switch, i just couldnt figure out what was going on, but i have now figured it out after a eureka moment. It turns out - my car has a high beam relay which is not in any of the diagrams (my '69 125 didn't have one) - all 4 headlights had blown, - the column switch wiring only matches the loom about 1:3 colours! Also, i was using this particular brand of headlights (from the parts car), they bench tested good and looks good, and i was chasing all sorts of theories, because surely all 4 would not just work and then not work without warning or changing anything? Yep. Truly prince of darkness. Managed to get some Cibie semi sealed high beams + the Airport lenses for $30 from trademe, I paid more each for two no name hi/low sealed beams from Repco. Lights are all a gogo, just waiting on some H1 bulbs for the (inner) high beams and some orange bulbs for the indicators. Number plate back on, including the 'jewels' from the parts car - i need a couple of red ones so i can have them as port and starb'rd running lights. Dash all back in and working (except the clock), my aux illary guages are all go too, including a ratty Star Tacho that was bolted to the dash of my blue 125 when i first got it. Interior is all back in too: and stereo all wired up (a switch and headphone jack in the centre console (for ipod or phone) goes to an amp under the passenger seat that powers some boxed 6x9s in the boot), amp is powered off an auxillary fuse box/relays for electric fan and main beams, spotlight etc.
