  1. Heard back from machine shop this arvo, ring gap was way too big, and block is worn around 4 thou (I could feel a slight lip and expected as much) so they recommend reboring to 40 thou over, new pistons and bearings. I thought 0.030” over was about max for a thin-walled sbf, but apparently going + 0.040” is ok for a street motor. Plus it is only 0.005” (0.127m) larger each side than what it is now which puts it in perspective. Gave them the go-ahead to proceed, and I’ll drop off the gasket kit I already have to lower cost a smidgeon. If it wasn’t the original block I may have looked at other options, but the matching numbers thing makes decision easier, plus it’ll be nice to bolt everything up knowing it should be sweet underneath. Just more $$$ I’ll have to explain to wifey, who is losing her tolerance… Did some maths, and this will take it out to a 308 Ford, which will be a talking point I s'pose...

  2. Project discussion: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/55789-corona_man-1979-toyota-ke30/ I thought I'd start a build thread on the recently purchased Ke30 Corolla I have just purchased. I'm off work at the moment so am going to try and restore it back to original condition within a month. The car is in pretty.good condition, has minimal rust in it , but the 4k motor is stuffed. I will just be putting back in a 3k or 4k motor. Interior is a bit old, no carpet and seats are ripped up. I will be doing all the work myself, panel and paint, engine work, re upolstry, the lot. I will keep up regular updates if anyone is even interested in it. Here's a picture of it as is

  4. Been a while... The car has been sitting in the garage for the last 2 years or something not doing much. I have been slowly hoarding away parts and with our first baby on the way decided it's time to get motivated and do some stuff with it.. I got these wheels from another member up North ages ago, they're supposed to be from a formula ford or something. I've had them stripped, powder coated and fitted up with 175/60 A539. I had bought a set of MK1 struts converted to coilover ages ago but as my car already had a MK2 front end and I had a spare set of MK2 struts I sold the MK1 struts and Chris from suspension tech in Pukekohe built up my MK2 struts. This is the finished result of new wheels plus struts.. (this was taken a couple years ago pre coilover) and now.. I'm super stoked on how the car is coming along.. I've been planning this in my head for the last 10 years almost! The next step is go for a WOF, hopefully it will pass at the local shop out here in Waipara but I'm not overly optimistic with the lack of cert for coilovers.

  5. The rest of my aliexpress stuff turned up today steel bung for sump rivnuts etc. I was a noob and ordered -8 instead of -10 bends so I'll order some more and wait. I got the rocker cover and piping welded up which looks sweet! so much better (and faster) than braising. The factory pcv/breather system has this ugly separator box on the back, I turned up a adaptor so I can get a -10 weld in bung in place and to to the catch can. I lost count on a few of the passes before measuring but its pretty close. I'll cut out a retaining tab and get it all welded up nicely later.

  6. I run a catch can in my car, because I thought I had to for racing rules. But it's bone dry 100% of the time, I think because this particular engine has a 3 pass baffle in the rocker cover. As in, the fumes have to go from one end of cover to the other, then back, then back again before getting to the vents.

  9. Lol, so oil pump has turned up, bought via rock autos. look at box, oh yeah, some sort of brand. Open box, well well, what have we got here, genuine Aisin oil pump with the Toyota symbol ground off haha. Score in my books. Now I just hope it fits, as its for a cressida and all Anyway, not sure when thats going to make it into the car. busy this weekend, possibly busy the weekend after. and somewhere is nats and then I'm away the weekend after nats also. Such a busy time. Plus I need to get other crown on a hoist to do exhaust, So, kinda stuck in between both, as they both need to get on a hoist really. Not keen for removing sumps on the ground haha. Anyway heres some pictures of the turd. Seedy Al

  14. to wrap it all up chucked a new engine mount in, slammed the rack in the hole and bolted her all up snuggly lovely jovely Last on the list was wheel alignment the passengers side had massive toe out while the drivers was straight, rather then looking like a drunk man with a bad limp I did the wheel alignment can do 1km distance straight not touching the wheel, ran out of space. right so now is to drive the shit out of it to bed in the new rack its go kart tight at this moment in time but slowly been broken in, poor girl having a rod ram in and out of her, lovely steering box indeed

  15. I got into 3D Modeling earlier this year, coming from knowing nothing i've done quite well i think. The main software i've settled on is SketchUp with the STL Plugin, ThomThom CleanUp3 Plugin that produces good Models for Printing in which I primarily use Simplify3D though i have found a few bugs in that with overhangs and occasionally i will slice with OctoPrint. I read as much as I could about printers for a few months and eventually settled onto a custom Printer design called a VORON, its a CoreXY design that has a very light print head for very fast travel/stability, it also has a 240v SSR heated bed which warms up super quick. There is a ton to learn and what really didnt help me was i couldnt find a good guide that helped in the initial calibration of the printer & filament (i've since written one) More pic's here if interdasted.

  16. 0.5 mm at a distance of 100 mm from the hub axis would equate to approximately 2.5 mm at the centre of the shaft, assuming the whole shaft is bent at the centre. In that case, 2.5 mm would probably be beyond tolerance and probably cause substantial vibration. But yeah, try with the gearbox disconnected, or try inspect the wheel bearings for any roughness.

  18. Discussion - //oldschool.co.nz/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=34338 So here is my new set of wheels Always liked the 330 shape, would have liked the wagon or hardtop version but they are hard to find and this was cheap and in good condition. Picked it up from Dunedin, left there at 4pm and arrived in Picton at 2am, 10hrs only stopping for gas. Rained most of the way, was pretty stormy north of chch was freezing while waiting for the 7am ferry and then had a 4m swell in the strait. Was a good trip and it ran sweet the whole way. Here are some pics, it's still dirty from the drive, original hubcaps are in the boot, one came loose so I took them all off just in case. Nice to drive with the lazy auto plus the L26 sounds choice too. Plans are: clean inside and out, lower, wheels, fender mirrors

  19. First time posting, sorry if I've done anything wrong. This is my 1966 Mk1 Triumph, was my dads but he doesn't have any time to work on it so it now mine Discuss: Originally had a 2000 motor with auto gearbox but was changed over to a fully rebuilt 2500 engine with Tr5 cam, auto box was replaced with a manual overdrive around 96' I think, also was repainted around that time. Motor has only done 10000km since then. Failed a warrant in 2006 and has basically been sitting since then. To Do List Rusty Brake Lines Fuel Pump Rebuild Rust R/H Door Pillar Rust in Doors Rust L/H Door Pillar Rust Front L/H & R/H Sill and Boot Floor U Joints need replacing Rear axle gasket needs replacing Suspension seems higher on one side? Think needs new or rebuilt struts Sorry about the pics but don't really have any of the car actually looking complete. Car has basically been stripped on the outside. There was lots of rust bubbling out partly because of it sitting in a carport for 7-8 years and partly because of the bad paint job and repairs done previously. Dent on front where cat had knocked a piece of wood onto the car Engine runs great. Radiator has been flushed, new oil and spark plugs. Water pump and thermometer gaskets have been replaced along with the rocker cover gasket Fuel pump also had to be rebuilt as it leaked. This is the L/H front Inner fender, frame rail had almost completely rusted away. Basically same thing on the other side. Wire wheeled and covered in rust converter, frame rail patch welded in. Don't know what you call this but the water is supposed to run down here into the fender? Anyway rusted metal gone. Probably the worst part on the car, Probably a centimeter of bog covering this, which rust had bubbled up through. Was a previous repair done with what I think was a gas torch, sand? and bog by the previous car painters. Not sure how to fix this. Ideally needs a whole new fender but 16 yo me is way to poor for that. Anyway hopefully by posting on here I will have more motivation to work on this. Next planning on purchasing some por15 to do the battery tray and inner fender

  20. It was just a universal type one I found so it isn't the best fit but it still looks ok I think. Would have liked a bit wider but it was already the biggest one I could find at the time at 1.5m, dat bumper be huge.

  22. That chin spoiler is sweet. If it was me I would break up the red, perhaps a couple of stripes or something. At the moment it looks like a chicks petticoat hanging beneath the hem of her skirt, like it's in the right place and meant to be there but should be a little more discreet. But look at me, I own 2 Australian cars - I pretty much have the worst taste in the world.

  25. I used fuel cell foam as the media inside my catch can. Just cut a piece to the right size and gave it a thorough clean before installing. Have had the catch can apart a couple of times and the foam is holding up nicely. Also have some of this inside the valve cover in the baffles - when looking into breather setups I found this is part of what RB guys (think Mines, HiOctane Racing Australia etc) were doing so figured if its good enough for 500+hp RB's it's good enough for a little 4AGE.

  28. Well, had some ups and downs with the car since the last post. I managed to get a few hours to do some work on it and found some really nice surprises and a really shitty one too. The nice surprise was that I pulled out the old musty, super dirty, cigarette burned and ash filled carpets. The car smelled a million times better after doing that, but the best surprise was the floor pans under the carpet were absolutely mint. No rust, no mold, no nothing. My 2002 WRX had more rust on the floor pans than this thing does. Still needs a good deep clean to get rid of the dirt, but I'm so happy with how clean they are. Speaking of carpet, my replacement carpet showed up the next day. Fully formed, has the heel plate, just needs to have the holes for the shifter plate, hand brake, and seat holes cut out before I put it in. The last bit of good news is I got my new headlight setup in from Asia. I couldn't find the replacement lenses for the marker lights, so I decided to pull the trigger on the JDM flat nose headlights and bezels. I mistakenly only ordered the right side bezel/marker light, so I need to order up the left side this week. The bad news of all of this, went to go rebuild the carb last week and found this. Hairline crack in the carb body. It explains why the carb would start puking fuel out when it got up to operating temperature. Since finding parts for older Toyota's up here is like finding a needle in a haystack, so my buddy is going to take it home and see if he can either seal it up using a special epoxy he has, or see if our other buddy can just do a quick weld on it. Either way, carb should be taken care of soon and hopefully wont flood out. I also had a quick question for anyone else who owns a KE/AE Wagon. I'm going to start working on the body work in the next couple of weeks, and one of my first things I'm going to be doing is pulling the glass out of the rear 1/4 windows and the hatch window. I had a question about removing the rubber seal outside of the window. I took a quick look and it looks like for the rear 1/4 windows the rubber seal pulls out, is that true? I know for the hatch window I need to pull the chrome trim off, then the seal. I also checked with Toyota over here and the hatch glass seal is discontinued from Toyota, should I just use a thick coat of urethane when I replace it?

  29. Blacks or Hylton Parker. If HP, then ring the Chch branch and ask for Corrie, she knows that shit inside out and has stacks of weird arse fasteners left over from Tait and Trimble etc. If I was looking for this, she would be my first port of call.

  32. So gearbag got back into the car today, still a few things to sort out under there, but atleast the cunty part of trying to install a heavy gearbox under a car on axle stands by your self is done and dusted. So tomorrow it might be driveable again, however, there are some other jobs that really need to be done also. One is to swap out the very noisy fuel pump. Not sure its because its a cheap item, or because I possibly didnt prime it correctly when I first started it, but either way, it sounds like there is a coffee grinder going constantly under the car. kinda gay! and want to change the spark plugs, because I didnt ages ago, and it seemed a bit missy. once those are done, its dash and exhaust time. Pics of some crap. Front Bearing all swapped over. Helicoiled selector thread. And two very different clutch forks. The more I look at the difference in these, the more I can only feel this is why I have had so much issue with clutches in this thing so far. Correct fork is longer at both ends, which probably means my release bearing has been acting a bit funny on the pressure plate. Hopefully no more! Rad and stuff

What's everyone's thoughts on the next meet? Maybe it's time for the Pohara bowls? I'm not sure if they have a "season" but I can call and find out.

  36. And once again, I've started a small job that has grown. Pulled the passenger side out, bit more difficult as it's against the wall in the shed and I've got to wriggle into position (usually forgetting the important tool). More shock bolts sheared off, plus much hammering to get ball joints/tie rods out, more piles of muck to scrape off and tricky rivets to drill out, but got to a stage where I've got two piles of parts roughly cleaned... and a whole lot of bits to toss... Have ordered new brake pads & wheel bearings as well, plus brake shield gaskets and new grease caps (a surprising $5 delivery from a Mercury speciallist in th' States). I probably should remove the calipers and clean them up/replace seals etc while I'm at it but I may replace all brake lines later on so will do it then. Thought I'd try my blast cabinet with the new compressor (last one was painfully asthmatic/slow) so wrapped all engine parts in gladwrap and sealed in box before making things dusty... And it worked ok, still slowish but much better air delivery. I can't see myself hunched over for hours doing the control arms etc tho, so will prob get these professionally blasted... So aiming to press old bushings out and get parts blasted this week, ready for painting over the weekend. Then it's the fun stage, assembly. Will finish with pic of my apprentice - he's bloody useless. Gets covered in oil, chews stuff, widdles in the shop, scatters tools and generally gets in the way. Still good company tho...

  38. Been a while. I have mounted the rev counter in the dash, installed headunit, speakers and some doof doof. Yay purple wheel nuts Attended Hardpark and enjoyed myself more than I expected I would Also hit the Ford day in Kapiti, the weather was real bad and it actually got called off but it was fun while it lasted. Driving home my wipers got slower and my lights got dim....the alternator died Thankfully (in a weird way) I still run points and EVLSKE made it home Replaced the alternator and we were back up running again annnnd we attended the British car day So all was going well but ya know how it is with old british cars....the headlight switch burnt out on the way home from the inlaws farm in Levin, no problem the lights stayed on so we got home. Unplugged the switch and all good. The next morning was the day of the Shannon auto spectacular, we drove to the inlaws and my lady and 2 of the girls stayed there. My eldest daughter and myself carried on through to Shannon. We stayed for a couple hours and then we headed back to the inlaws. The back road between Shannon and Levin was nice and quiet so I put my foot down to stretch the legs on the Escort. The gearbox had other ideas. There was a major internal malfunction and the internals exited through the gearbox housing and left a trail of destruction in its wake. So this is the view from under the car I picked these up off the road It came out in 2 pieces 2 weeks later and we are running again! Scored a Gearbox for a good price, new driveshaft universal, some fluid and its all good (Y)

  39. Random bits I bought a bigger sway bar on tardme to see if it improves handling any, seems ok but was yellow, so stripped and painted in my favourite durepox black, along with a few other bits... Putting in new universals too, got them out by the 'bash with big socket over cap while resting on bits of wood' method - looks like not before time... While I was doing this I thought I'd paint the distributor, as OCD me don't like the red under the bonnet. Shouldn't be any electrical tracking dramas with epoxy, and hopefully it sticks well to the plastic. Just cleaned it with solvent, masked the connector turrets and shot it with a gloopy mess of paint (was down to last bit of tin and it had thickened to an almost jelly consistency)... Surprised it managed to spray at all, but came out tolerable - I'll just tell people it was an attempt at a wrinkle finish...

  41. So, around a year after I started, I've pulled the guts out of her again. It was going ok, been using it a bit, but the puffs of smoke and red puddles were embarrassing, so I'm gonna hopefully fix those properly. Since I've got most of the gear and done all the painting etc it shouldn't be too much of a mission. (I was sooo close to putting a 5-speed box in though, just can't justify the hassle/expense). Plan is to strip engine and get block checked, and put her back together all tight and perky... Also gonna fit lowered springs and have ordered a set of rubber suspension bushes and larger sway bar to tidy up the wallowy front end. Bit of a bugger redoing a lot of this work, but I took the gamble last time, and at least I've got a garage buddy to keep me company... meet Jagger, the 9 wk old Border Collie, great wee bloke - already knows to sit there out of the way while I cock things up, bleed and swear...

  44. So got the old beast going today and went for a drive. handling is horrible but that was expected lol. Vid showing it running. Smoky as its exhaust pipe is only like 3 feet long and in the middle has a big hole. And a walk around the old Hudson. orgional colour was Blue. someone painted it mid 60s. a bit of surface rust but on the whole its in pretty good condition. So the engine and everything under the hood will be up for sale soon once i rip it on out. Heck pretty much everything under the car will be for sale. Any restoration guys after parts let me know i guess. Alex
