  3. the rules might have changed but when i did mine like that as long as both sides are symmetrical (ie, the opposite side is unplugged so only the two external lights work) and the remaining headlights are both high and low beam then your good to go. be prepared to be told "hey, you've lost a headlight" approximately 2 thousand times a day.

  4. New lower crossmember has been fabbed from scratch, welded into place, and liberally coated with underseal/rustkill/Brunox. Parts of the front have also been tidied up with a lick of paint. The certifier visited this morning to complete his final inspection of the crossmember repair; but in typical tradesman fashion he won't be back until tomorrow to write up the actual paperwork for it The new front bumper supports also arrived courtesy of our man Mark at Manawatu Toyota. One of them will be affixed to the vehicle, and the other one goes into storage because you never know when it'll come in handy, right? Then I have to pull flnger this weekend to re-assemble the front, and the car will head back to compliance early next week... for what one hopes will be the last time. It ain't over until it's over! Dat TGP sticker. This one's in slightly better condition than the one which came off the car! Discuss: http://oldschool.co....1-sc-chit-chat/

  7. So I've been looking for a hako for about 4 years now, keeping an eye on the prices and how quickly they seem to be appreciating in price as the world notices them (thanks RM Sotheby's) and with some hard saving I've been able to finally make a purchase. The car is a 1971 2000GT with L20 engine and 5 speed. Unknown ks, bit of rust around the place (wouldn't be one without it) but overall a fairly solid start. I purchased this from Restored.jp who some may be familiar with, they make aftermarket FRP and carbon parts for old cars like that Hako. This was the owners personal car.. whether that's good or not is yet to be known but it's a nice story anyway. I'd be interested to have contact with other owners of Hakos in NZ as it would be handy for parts and general networking. I'll be working on this in stages (as I'm now broke) to get this up to road legal spec.. More to come but I've already figured a couple things I need to do before it's even here ! I understand there are several in NZ already, any coupes or road legal ones? Discuss: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/49704-mlracings-hakosuka/

  11. I picked some old bakelite magneto telephones recently, I had heard you can quite easily hook them up and have a closed circuit telephone line, turns out it is pretty easy. What better way for the wife to let me know it's dinner time while I am working in the garage, with the gentle chime of bells awoken from their slumber by a hand cranked magneto, aaahhhh technology. Party line party times One of the phones I got was the phone in the scoreboard at Athletic Park. There seems to be some slight variation between the telephones, mostly in the wiring, they usually have a diagram stuck inside which is handy. All the mags look like they are from the same manufacturer, I had to swap one from a front crank unit into a side crank one, just had to change over some brackets. As far as connecting them together, each phone should have 4 wires, positive, negative, line 1 and line 2. These are just connected to the same on the other phone, positive to positive, negative to negative etc. They will now be able to ring each other by cranking the handles. To get the voice circuit working a battery can be connected to each phone, 3-6v seems to be enough, I have a little AA battery holder on each which is connected to the positive and negative terminals. All hooked up and working again Next step is to run some wire to the garage and swap one of the cases to a nicer one for the house, should fit in quite nice as the house was built in the late '20s

  12. Suckle upon a picture of the car since I added the filler panel between the bumper and grille and splash guards under the headlights. Dane the good cunt hooked me up these, but only one splash guard and it was rusty. I made another one from scratch and got it fairly close. Dick job but got it together just before the rain fell and daylight ran out. Shows how bent the bumper is and still won't bring the grille into spec because it's pot metal, cracked both sides and never going to be right but fuck it.. Front much more stable and a lot less gappy now. Been too rainy since to paint in anything but black zinc. Mint16 scored me a steering bearing from eBay cause I'm too scared to online purchase. It will eradicate the 360 deg Inch of slop I have with the wheel inside the column. Will be ultra lush. Bridflu has all shifter bushes on order so to make it magical feeling. I've made my own bushes but they fuck out fairly regularly because home made. Hoping to give it a QUICK flick of black before my wedding in a month but require my flatmate (not a mate, he's a scourge) to move out this week to free up space.

  14. Wow- after a bit of digging about through her old photos my mum finally found some of our old 120y wagon from back in the late 70s/early 80s. What I was after was confirmation that the car for sale on the oldschool classifieds area.... http://oldschool.co.nz/2011/forum/index.php?/topic/49659-fs-datsun-120y-wagon-nelson/ Mum phoned me this morning with good news. Yes!!! it is indeed our old car. Damn this is cool news!!! I have spoken to Dave's (avenger tiger) boss and its still up for grabs so I have said I'll take it away Mum and Dad are very excited about the prospect of getting their old car back. Mum has been talking about getting a Morris Minor Traveller like they had before the Datsun but they are too expensive. Getting their Datsun on the road for them would be awesome. Luckily it sounds like I might be able to get the old original engine back as well. Its currently in a Suzuki 4wd but the owner wants something else to power it. So this will be good if I can secure its original heart. Anyway- I'm so excited. I should be in the workshop right now welding my Viva wagon but I couldn't help but start a thread even though I don't yet have the car. I am under no illusions that it will be an easy resto. It will be rusty like Ive not seen before. But I don't mind that. Hopefully if I need any parts there should be enough bits floating about in NZ on the vibrant datsun nz forum. Another choice thing is that because mum has photos of it with the plates visible hopefully I can apply to reuse the old plates when it come to the re-vinning process. So here are some cool photos. All taken in the late 70s or early 80s. This is up the Westbank road when we used to go visit this mad old farmer/recluse fella. He would hang weird things about in trees if I remember correctly and thats what we are looking at. This is me and my brothers and sister in the boot along with Bella the smelly old Lab and Pipi the cat (who lived to be 19 years old!). I'm the little fella sitting on the back seat on the right in the white collared top. Here's the two family wagons. My Dad was very proud of his Mk4 Zodiac wag that he brought over with him from the UK. It was always giving troubles whilst the Datsun just purred through life. Dad never bought another english car again and we ended up with two more Datsuns after the 120Y. Mum and Dad did buy my first Triumph off me when I left for me 10 year OE and they loved that old car. But that's because Triumphs are bloody awesome too. Finally here is a photo of a Family reunion at Woodend. It was my Mums family and this was the mens beauty contest. The little Hillman Superminx wagon next to the 120y was my cousins and that was a cool car too. I think my cousin Helen ended up crashing it Here it sits in its current condition.. Discuss Here

  18. so after being shafted with the re-vin process, decided to keep building and just use licence plate from an already registered moped and begin modz huge tyres looked cool but inevitably were horrible. they rubbed everywhere, hard to get on and off, front tyre was eating away at my speedo cable, not ideal. slapped the 2.25's back on, made a great difference. top speed increased. no rubbing. the dream. then came the lows v pleased with end result. took indicators off cos in all honesty they do fuck all, and it looks better. scoot goes so much better now without the horrible boaty suspension. sui shifter??? trim the seat??? more matte black aussie export????? roger

  26. The engine is now all back together including the original fuel pump While putting the carb back together I had a few bits left over in the rebuild kit, few I knew and wasn't worried about but one little jet had me stumped, noticing a threaded hole on the side with no screw I dug out another carb and attached to the other side of a small brass screw was the random jet, referring to the workshop manual it turns out its for the idle circuit, further explains the reluctance to start! With everything back together and a fresh charged battery in the hole I primed the carb (so cool having a primer lever!) and turned the key, first pop and away, I've had her up to temp and everything seems happy only when I decided I needed a drive I ran out of gas, so hopefully this weekend I'll top her up and go for a sneaky drive. Just need to sort some rust and put the interior back together and she'll be ready for a date with the wof man. I've also cleaned the block and engine bay of most of the muck, I planned to paint the rocker cover but its got a cool rust/paint/patina look so I'm just gunna leave it, with new gaskets all round it shouldn't leak too much oil, also replaced the heater hoses, now waiting for the heater tap to leak all over the interior....

  31. New bumper support ordered from Toyota, cheers Mark! I ended up buying two in the end because stocks are running low. Now I can emulate those foamers who throw brand new parts into the attic and forget all about them for 30 years. (Then some other guy comes along, buys it all for cheap in an estate sale and posts about it on Facebook.) P/N 52021 in the above image. You can also see the dumb foam insert (i.e. water trap) that's sandwiched between the bumper support and bumper cover. Also dug around in the shed and found all of the spare refurbished retaining rails (P/N 52521, 52522, 52525, 52535, 52536) left over from when I did the rustwork on the last AW11 and sent a heap of things away for blasting and re-coating. Knew those would come in handy one day... Discuss: http://oldschool.co....1-sc-chit-chat/

  32. After years of steeling this from my father, a deal has been struck, and now the family vk is mine. It is a 1985 Holden HDT VK SS, has been in my family since 1992 and was the family car for many years before it got pushed to the back of the shed in about 1996 and left to sit, until about 2008 when I pulled it back out from the darkness. The rego had expired as dad didn't know he had to redo it every year, so after a revin, and replacing a few fuel related parts (don't leave your car full of gas for 12 years) and other bits and pieces that didn't like sitting for so long, it was all go again.

  34. The annual Mustang Convention is coming up in Labour Weekend, its a massive event with 120+ cars registered and this year its in New Plymouth. I thought I'd start getting the beast all spicko the other day and gave it a really thorough wash and dry. My last phase of the "very thorough dry" was to dry it off with a microfibre, unfortunately I picked up one that I had once used for polishing and left a greasy film of damp polish over every inch of blue paint on the car... Very fucking thoroughly... So I had to wash the whole thing again to get it off and by that stage it was dark, so not as clean as I had hoped. Oh well. The kenwood stereo its had since I bought it only gets stations ending in an odd decimal point for some stupid american reason (93.1 93.3 etc) and ALL the local stations are even points. Lately I've been sick of listening to my ipod via a tape adaptor which is starting to pack up, and I found a new CD player I forgot I had, so I got busy today and made a nice bracket and fitted it in. It sounds great, I dunno why I didn't do this years ago. 1.6 welds so nice with the TIG, don't even need to use filler Sorry for the state of those photos... Also, when I brought the car into the country 7 years ago the handbrake lever was broken and it failed compliance on it so we made a "temporary" one to get it through while a replacement came from the states. Its been on the shelf for 7 years and I finally fitted it today. I bet the fucking thing will break next week and I'll be putting the "temporary" one back on haha Ive also bought some spare front springs for 1-way adjustables and will fab some blocks for the rear at some stage. Then I need to do something about the tyres to allow it to get a bit lower. I'm not excited about that job though, I'll probably put it off for a while cos I hate putting springs in and out.

  35. Well, not quite ready for nats, but good things take time right? On Thursday evening it fired into life for the first time. After lots of fiddling, and a round of fish and chips, we shuffled the E21 onto the dyno at approx 9.15pm. Big thanks to Roskilda autos! Rodney and Ari are great guys who know who to get stuff sorted, and went hard to get me doorting for the weekend! After the first run was worked out properly on a calculator on my phone translating to "old barry horsepower" figures, my face turned to a big notbad.jpg Things only improved from there. I rang the engine builder the next day to tell him the numbers. Pretty sure it's one of the only times I've heard him curse. We were both pretty happy! 152wrhp/190hp at the engine

  36. right been a while. lots of waiting when parts have to come from the other side of the world, any way first to arrive was my new shift drum and selector dogs. i had to buy a whole set to get one dog. but thats the way it goes sitting nicely in their new home next up was cleaning the gear box, removing and replacing all the bearings, thankfully simply bearings in the uk had every thing i needed in stock, most of the bits i need arrived from richards relics in the U.S, the new intake to airbox rubbers and chrome joiner the new pistons, rings, pins, small end bearings, and circlips gasket set and brake shoes and a funky little key ring also a new cam lobe for the points inside the alternator/generator still waiting on http://www.poetonaptec.co.uk/ to return my barrels, they were remarkably quick to take my money, but refuse to return an email, i guess ill have to suck it and see but the good news is i can atleast rebuild the bottom end back up.

  37. OK sorry for more spam but Shane just sent over some more close up images with various repair stuff which is good and thorough. Engine had a strange miss which turned out to be a bung plug, replaced that with some random one and it worked. Compression appears to be a little low on one cylinder but the car still seems to run relatively well so when I get it I'll do plugs/leads/dizzy cap etc anyway as a precaution. Shane also has some MDI spark booster thing (you know those boxes you always see on old Jap cars to boost the spark) so he'll throw that in too. A few more pics.. Powerhouse! I'm actually happy that the numbers match on this and the body.. otherwise that could be a bit of a problem come time for VIN etc. Angry face! Interior is overall very clean, will need new centre console as that one looks banged up and not correct for the car (more holes for buttons and switches than my povo one has). Plus side, less things to go wrong in mine right? But this really got me excited.. https://vid.me/fhmd Annd they reckon we should have a booking for shipping next week so that's pretty exciting.

  43. Decided to try and find out where this annoying rattle sound was coming from in the engine bay. At first I thought it was the water pump but was actually the tensioner bearing. So I replaced them both, along with a new cambelt. Also installed a thermostat as it didnt have one and the gauge struggled to move without one. All was going well driving this car daily till about a month ago. It developed (what I thought at the time) a strange miss The car would run fine and drive in a 50kmh zone ok. When I hit the motorway it would cut out, jerk and run like balls. Young Bigfoot came to my aide one night on SH1. So, I decided to replace items in the ignition system. I replaced the coil, dizzy cap, rotor, condensor, points, leads and spark plugs all with new items. Unfortunately this didnt fix it. I described the symptoms to my father and informed that the issue is fuel related. Carb off for a clean Tank out for a clean New (old) fuel filter from Dads parts stock Went to replace the fuel pump and as I removed the pump I found the spring that normally sits behind the lever arm sitting out of place Its fitted with a rare 2 piece spring Acquired a new fuel pump and installed it Drove it home for the first time since cleaning out the fuel system and it drives like a champ again! Happy days
