  1. yep so she's back on the road, little bit of an update eh. - a bunch of rust needed doing, plenty more to go. sills etc. - front short shocks, Ultima, from online auto parts aussie site - had some standard KYBs floating around for the rear. glad i didnt cut the original shock mounts out during the hydro process! - whiteline swaybar and bushes, as above - new spring packs care of Archers springs, Rotorua. - thermostat, first time in years - fan shroud, first time ever - went back to the muzzy rims with some maxxis 175/70 14 biccies - new rear brake lines - super-drone side exit exhaust managed to stay, yeah! it drags round left handers under the right circumstances - stoked. - cleaned all the paint off the front end trim. fuck it drives so sweet now (for what it is), best it ever has. still a bunch of niggles but pretty happy with it. the new springs are great but came down a whole bunch during the trip to Wagnats. a little unusual for new ones. anyway, just got them back from HG Inghams blacksmiths in the Hutt. i dropped off the springs and my old main leaves on monday, by tuesday's end i had them back in the car with the old main leaf added to the pack, and all reset to suit. will get it out for a drive tonight but from standing on the towbar the car is noticeably stiffer, and only sits a half inch higher at the back, unloaded. loading up a bunch of shit and a Hemi2doz in the front and driving it for a week/nats should be a good test!

  2. well the trumpy has been running mint, took it down south for our wedding at the end of jan and the engine ran really well, although quite low on oil pressure, an oil change with penrite 20w 60 sorted this. From the journey i discovered a few things i wanted to change It still had the 4.1:1 diff in it, and even with the overdrive box it still didnt have enough legs for my liking, screaming tits off at 100kmph, although it did pop sweet skids with this in. So back to the parts PI in wanganui i went and ripped out the 3.4:1 and ripped out the shitty leather pinion seal and banged a rubber lip seal in. Went to jims workshop last sat and put the diff in, new one went in alot easier than old one came out, blardy stupid brits making the diff part of the rear subframe! While i had the old girl on the hoist i happened to look at the flex bush on the steering coloum, a shitty nolathane UJ pretty mush to reduce cabin noise, it had just about completely broken off, was holding on by about 3mm of nolathane, imagine that breaking on the motorway at 110kmph, so thats one of my 9 lives gone. Pic for scaryness - So i fixed this as adivsed by a guy that races a PI, but im not gunna post on here how i fixed, you can ask me at nats.... Next up was the springs, under advise i had the standard springs compressed, i wouldnt reccomend this to anyway! the became so soft and soggy and shit that i had to get rid of them. So some standard ones were cut 2 coils so they were just captive, bottom arms are now about 2mm off the bumpstops, not as low as they can go but thats not really what im into. still have the rears to do but geeeezus the fronts made a huge difference to the handling!

  5. I have made some progress on this little bike. Firstly it is small!!! Made some strengthening plates Found a wider rear wheel from a Chinese chopper and fitted it Made new bar mounts and fitter bars Turns out the c50 engine was fried after the last burnout so fitted a pit bike 110cc engine to get it running for QCR display at a local car show. Also gave it an average spray can paint job for now until I paint it properly Also at this show it was a part of a group QCR burnout https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=UULHhiXo71NEQ8bwICQV6mhg&v=1pHHjcqKaBc#t=10 This thing is also so slammed it rips sump bungs out

  7. Ed, you really need to stop using high school type references with the cool kids, last picked, etc. It's not a legitimate way of analysing personal or group relationships. Get that gubbins out of your mindset and you might find things aren't the way you picture. The clowns on here don't give a fuck about 'cool' kids. That aside. I've never been in this car. Giz a skid bro. We can fang to the dairy and get some fags during lunch, then hang out smoking them at the back of the camp ground instead of going to events.

  8. I ended up getting this st70 out of a deal for stuff all, but its pretty rough no engine, tank, wiring ect. It sat behind a mates garage for quite a while until we decided drag It back to mine... We put in a Ct90 engine in that I had lying around, we couldn't sort the wiring so it would only run off a battery charger then the clutch was also jammed on, so after this the idea was scrapped for a bit longer. But first since this all happened while pre drinking for a mates stag do, It did some burnouts This bike was then dragged back out a few days befor a QCR ride... A running c50 engine was slammed in and springs were cut. Then of course another burnout was completed And while drinking at the after party fire burnouts happened So this is where we are up to now, and this bike is a lot of fun mainly because it is tiny and cost stuff all, so iv decided to actually spend some time on it and built it properly. This is progress so far, longer swing arm with mono hard tail and my recessed seat Next on the list is to work out some rake, and a hand shifter with a linkage so its go a usable throw.

  9. New Parts shop Max s13 front knuckles, which I had powder coated black to make them.. less flashy I guess. Fully adjustable STD s13 coilovers with Cusco 910 front camber top plates And im sure there are one or two things I haven't taken photos of. Like Hippo bucket seat. Big s13 front sway bar, also I have the numberplate RZNSUN which will likely make its way onto this car Cheers!

  10. Definitely not overnight from Japan, in fact, I think they custom-made them to order which took a fortnight or so! But they arrived in time for Nationals, which is all that counts. Sweet flouro yellow box. Not pictured - the leaflet which has a little diagram saying "CUT HERE FOR MAXIMUM LOWDOWN". Will look at tackling the exhaust before Nats, but may end up doing nothing about it depending on how enthused I am at the time. The Rx-7 definitely won't be one of the more appreciated or "show-offy" cars in attendance, so I might just concentrate on keeping it alive on those sweet Coromandel back roads. 16. I've been busy so here is a long overdue Update. I've set my Igniton Idle Timing set the mixture replaced the rear Unijoint (socket and bench vice method, Thanks youtube) filled up the trans with fluid gone for a drive. yep thats it guys I'm finally back to where I started with a running driving vehicle and I'm pretty happy for now there are further tuning tweaks to make but for now it will do . I also had the oppurtunity to get to the North Otago Hotel Show and Shine on Feb 22nd. got mixed results, old dudes loved it and the young'uns said it was too "old man" cruising on HWY83 at the show and shine

  18. Finally got around to fitting the rocker cover, really looks out of place with out sidedrafts on the car but that will happen soon once i get some new extractors made to suit. Current cheap coby extractors have the 4th flange welded on a angle so it enjoys to blow manifold gaskets every few months. Also finally fitted a decent steering wheel after the last one decided to destroy its self Have got some cusco camber plates to go in at some stage which will most likely happen when i sort the 280ZX struts.

  19. More progress now, getting closer and closer. Ended up changing to a crossflow radiator setup, the front end suspension is practically all sorted now so onto fitting the brakes. Rear end has just had some custom work carried out to get the torsion rods to fit up (mainly brackets). Bosch coils fitted up and HT leads trimmed to suit, just need the end cap sorted. Fuel tank has been removed and all sorted now and all the fuel components are there ready to be fitted as well. Slip up with the replacement panels...sigh...the floor panels are well off (hump in the middle is far too narrow) and the front bumper mounts on the guards are well off so they may just get used as panel steel....... Do not recommend Phils Rotary Parts. Have also ordered some Toyo R888s to wrap the wheels for that semi-slick goodness. Anyway here are some pics. Cheers, Tai

  20. Removed the spec/QC stickers from the inner barrels as such (gotta retain these details right?) IMG_0770 by SnoozinRichy, on Flickr They're kept in a book, in the hope they'll stay flat on the backing of an old sticker I found laying about the place. So then it was time to get rid of the grotty old golden hue. One trip to the acid dipper (recommend Kwik Strip, on Patiki Rd if you need anything done!) and a couple of hours with some coarse sandpaper evening out some pits and depressions and these are now ready to have the lips attended to and polished to that mirror shine! 21. Gave it some rake yesterday, Going to fill those holes then make some scalloped steel strengthening plates to weld over top. I was going for a Mexican lowider look but I think I missed that by a mile but still pretty happy with it so far. Im also starting to get keen on the idea of a super charger....

  22. Hi All, Long time watcher, first time poster! Had this VK Wagon for a few years but sold it after a marriage split... Went about 6 months without a wagon and it finally got the better of me so bought this sweet granddad spec VC. Bought it unseen about 10mins after it 1st hit trademe - shipped it down to Chch, then flew up and cruised back to my home town of Gore. Was pleasantly surprised with how great the condition of it was!! Running 225 leaning tower of power, single barrel squirter through TF904 trans. Discuss...

  23. well there you go i learned something today it doesnt change the actual spring rate, you are correct has a similar effect though. i have set up many sets of coil overs where the spring had a lot of preload and a stiff spring, and the car rides and handles badly, has zero droop etc. loosen the springs so you can turn them and set the height with the strut length, doesnt try to kill you going round a corner any more

  27. In keeping with tradition of not doing what I said I'd do next from my previous post.. This'll make it heeeeeeaps easier to mount the M20 and jazz it up A popular fix for fitting the M20 into these engine bays is to hack the top of the nose so a larger radiator can be installed and be brought forward. However, I've read that people have opted for not cutting up the nose by using a wasted spark setup and an electric water pump for the M20 as these can be remotely mounted. Doing this can save a fair bit of space at the front of the engine. So I might look into that! Been having a tough time deciding whether to restore the bottom of the nose back to original and roll as is, or buy a fiberglass airdam and stick it on. The airdam option will be by far the easiest, but I'm liking the original bumperless look more and more. Restoring the nose to original is beyond my amature tom-foolery, so I'll have to way up the two options financially and do some pros and cons. Hmm. Next up: get the engine in there and make up some mounts. Might be hard to do it properly without gearbox/clutch/bellhousing

  32. thats right, but you should really have a baffle system around the pump, especially as your capri tank is so prone to losing fuel because it is mounted sideways in the car
    1 point
  33. plenty of people have mounted an intank pump into the fuel sender unit, so they arent actually welding the fuel tank I would not recommend welding or even modifying the fuel tank based on previous experience

  34. New pics with what I think may be the chosen ride height. Power steering is now holding fluid and has had an allignment! Just need to install the hoops (hopefully this weekend) for cert. Then it is a final tweak of the interior and install some better car auido. May look at rear bumper after the plate is rivited in. Interior and underside pics to come. I settled on a 2 1/2'' system from the extractors into a 2 chamber muffler and a resornator at the back. Awesome note with no drone. 80% of the underside has been painted/rust proofed. 70% of bushes replaced including new top hats. Has had a scope up her and been on the dyno. I have a hole in my vacuum advance ......so need to get that rebuild and recieve a final tune. What are your thoughts on the ride height? Intially I had it scraping low and was going to roll the gards. I then slapped this set in and felt maybe it would be more practicle as a daily driver and firewood tower. Also thinking it looks more 80's and standard. Slammed is fine if your going for the more street look ...... or maybe im trying to talk myself into it?

  36. NATS PREP. Car sat around after drag day because of misfire, Booked in for Nats and really wanna hoon this on the dirt track. after sitting for that long, the battery died so new one was purchased. and replaced plugs and coil to fix miss. Worked sweet for a day, but there must be more to the cause of the fault. Ordered a crank angle sensor and hopefully that shows up tomorrow to fit and fingers crossed that repairs the fault before I fly to Aussie on Thursday. And if so then gotta go buy a pair of 195/55r16s and change brake fluid. Also got some new front shocks which if I get time will go in before Nats, Nothing like last minute prep...

  39. Sooooo, been a busy past couple months but been chipping away at this. Since I made some big dog radiators for it the nose cone failed to fit anymore. But in true race car you must modify everything with no allowance for body work and then make the body fit. So i ended up cutting the nose cone in half horizontally and adding in about 80mm to lower the chin. Then i fixed all tthe cracks from the crash i had a few years ago, then bogged and sanded then bogged and sanded then bogged and sanded then bogged and sanded then bogged and sanded then bogged and sanded then bogged and sanded then bogged and sanded then bogged and sanded then bogged and sanded then bogged and sanded then bogged and sanded then bogged and sanded then bogged and sanded then bogged and sanded untill it was correct and back to where i wanted it. Then I primed it and wet and dried it, Then I primed it and wet and dried it again. Then i waxed it then i painted it with tooling coat then i fibreglassed over that to make a mould. Then finally today i got to actually make a finished product from it! Its come out pretty good. So i might just run it as is for now. Looks quite cool in white i think.

  40. Finally got around to replacing the rear wheel cylinder and fixing a few minor things with that Devon was able to pass her warrant. Shakotom managed to sell the Heros Racing wheels around the same time i came across a set of 14" Manaray Turbina. Went and had a geeze, liked them so I came home with them. I'm stoked with how the actually look on the starlet. JUST NEED MORE LOW! so now i'm seriously going to start to have a look into getting this thing lowered and some new tyres for the rims. ^ would be ideal

  41. I cheated and put a new washer bottle/pump assembly in, It looks tidy enough and doesn't have the water lies running through the firewall. I set the idle mixture and now it actually idles and starts. Just need to take it for a spin and see how it behaves now

  43. Then also went to Drag Nats Ran a 16.0 and am stoked with that. Gained a second over last time I was down there and all id changed was the exhaust. ($100 set of extractors and a full larger pipe exhaust out to the back) I think I could possibly crack into the 15s with better suspension and a harder launch But I did some burnouts Raced that damn vega. And BET IT AS WELL!!! And Neal, but lost when I stuffed up shifting to 3rd. I bet him next time out though And raced Ben. which was hilarious for me. speed matching him then waving and driving off into the sunset. and I had borrowed my grandads trailer to store things in for the day. I really want my own trailer now. so handy. Was plagued by a misfire pretty much all day when the car got hot. would let it cool down and pour water over things and it would go away. got real bad on the way home up the bombays. limped home and put it in the garage and have been neglecting it since unfortunately. I havent even washed it Well Nats is coming up. TO DO: fix misfire get new tyres find out why the carpet gets wet when it rains STOP NEGLECTING HER. Photo credits to respective photograpers. Thanks heaps! because I was slack and forgot my camera IM SO GONNA GET THE SUSPENSION SORTED THIS YEAR! (there its on the internet so im bound by that) Tein or d2?

  44. So this m20b25 happened.. It's missing a few bits and it's in pretty rough condition. Nothin but a bit of spit n' polish and a small fortune on rebuild bits can't handle I WILL MAKE IT FIT BY CRIKEY

  45. Got itchy arms trimming this heaps. Thanks Neal for sorting this out for me! Completely unsure which direction to head now. It fits far better than expected but still needs a ton of work (as well as a donor front steel bit to cut up) It does have some starved horse syndrome happening but pretty minimal considering how many thousands must have been pulled from this mold (rapidly, to keep up with demand) It won't ever look good in glass paint because its glass... But I'm not sure how much I want glossy paint on the whole car?

  46. Sounds like a mish to Zebra or pickas will be easiest way! Just going back to the heat wrap topic... Some rolls of aliexpress 'titanium' heat wrap turned up today, and I wrapped a coolant return line with it that was heat soaking my intake manifold. Holy shit it's good! So much better than fibreglass stuff that feels like it's going to discintegrate before you even finish fitting it. It's got a glossy kind of feel and appearance, and seems a bit tougher. Cuts nice with scissors and easy to wrap. Since this pipe gets to only 90-100 degrees I just used zip ties. I picked up that handy tip from the fabrication fail thread haha. A++, will reccomend if it lasts more than a few weeks haha.

  48. Ok! I didn't get this car driving by christmas as I had to work on christmas day. (Stink) But every spare moment i had was spent on the statesman. Eventually it began to look like a car again so finally my driveway looked less like a trailer park got the nose fitted and the mrs fitted the lights while I was at work Got the manifold and carb on as well as ALL! the plumbing ( word of advice dont own luxury early pollution engined vehicles everything runs of a vacuum pipe which is a total mindfuck) oil, fuel set the timing and battery in , cranked it over, turned over four full revolutions before it fired .got running oil pressure came up to spec nicely within 10seconds lifters pumped up and yeah sounds so good. I'ma happy. on a different note here is a shot of the factory head/tape deck for you holden foamers and a shot of my rear seats every door has a ashtray and ciggie lighter I believe I had a little race on with Flyingbrick and Shaz who could get there holden going first! I think i might be winning! Hope you lot had a sweet Xmas cheers The Doc

  49. Wow long time no update oldschool! Ive been back from initial officer training for about a week now and ive cracked on a fair bit and spent a few dollars on the escort! 1) Capri struts fully welded to coilovers by KE70_wagon aka mitch 2)FE3! Very happy with the new FE3 ive got. Its a high comression variant so 10:1 cr. Gearbox is sussed with the mx5 one ive got and a 2.0l petrol courier bellhousing. Plans for it will include itb's or dual carbs, porting and balancing. 3) In my spare time today i made a hybrid CAS from an mx5 and FE3 CAS 4)Also bought some AP 4pot calipers from an Austin princess with new stainless steel pistons and seal kits, should be here soon enough! So I head back to Waiouru for the rest of the year with about a week off every 2 months but should be worth it when I get my comission to 2nd Lieutenant and 57k. Goals for the year will just be parts hoarding and trying to crack on with the escort! Cheers guys, expect another update in 2months
