  1. This horrid (awesome) thing doesn't belong in the project thread as the plan is to get it useable and fang around a bit so not a proper "project" as such. Anyway it's a Beach Buggy/Offroader thing based on a shortened Beetle pan and suspension... the rest of it is rust and plumbing/scaffolding pipe. here are the pics the fella up norf sent me: You can see why I wanted it right??... no, not "because you are a fucking retard!" but thanks Thanks so much to Snoozin, Euron8, OrionFels/tedhuang for helping out with the epic roadie to collect and Slacker.Cam for the trailer loan, would have been a nightmare/fuckup/impossibility without your combined goodcuntedness (that's a word now ok... Shaz, put it in the OS Dick Shinnery) Chris said "fuck me the wheels are rusted to fuck" i was like "nah bro they will be sweet"... then I looked at them: hmmm... yeah, ok, need a new set of wheels... if you bought the ones I should have bought faster on TM I hate you Anyway... Apparently "The engine goes sweet, just broke the clutch cable and couldn't be fucked any more mate, might need to adjust the dizzy though coz there's a new on on there..." and "brakes work sweet now I think" Sure it does... meh, made a silly offer, wasn't silly enough apparently cos he said yup, sweet... 7 hours later and it's on my lawn: Plan is chop all the rusted cage out, so essentially the top section, weld in some more shit that will supply some strength and head room, plate up a bit of rust in the chassis... just rough and ready to make sure all is strong. Get engine going, attach seats, maybe move pedal box forward as currently you(I) can't change gears because leg is jammed against gear lever then fang over summer... Muriwai, maybe a week or so up 90 mile camping/fishing/exploring/jumping sand dunes etc. meh, discuss if you like... I would like to bypass the steps between now and dune smashing but that might be wishful thinking lol. In short a less pretty version of this: Get Bishes??

  2. old and slightly wrinkly? It'll happen.. just wait Oldmatedan- yeah Kevin loves travelling. The first trip out in the van he meowed a bit but soon settled. Now he just jumps into the van and goes straight onto the dash. As we drive through Nelson he gets up on the engine cover between the seats and sits his paws on the dash so he can look straight out front. He seems to love all the city action. He loves it when i park out the front of new world facing the windows so he can watch all the people. Once on the open road he goes to sleep between us on the engine cover. Then he wakes up when we hit the hills near the land and starts meowing within a couple of Ks from the block. gets all excited like. Cant get out quick enough and does a little lap round the cabin all excited and happy. Then expects food for his ordeals.

  3. Hello, I've got a new daily. Its grotty and needs a bit of work, but i'm sure it will turn out fine. This is going to be a bit of a reverse project, its lowered/tinted/on rims/panels are all different colours etc, and I'm going to return it to standard visually. Its running an S14 SR20DET and 5 speed, with a std lux LSD in the back, which livens things up a bit. I also need to ready it for a cert. So the plan is this: Return to, or very near std height. Fit standard steel rims. Remove tints. Finish off exhaust, which includes plumbing in the screamer pipe, lols. Fit 2x drive shaft loops. Have rust removed from pillars. Hopefully get a cert/wof/reg. Give it a general clean up inside and out. One day give it a quick panel and paint. (quicker than 4 years) Once all that's done, then I can play with the motor. I have no idea what power its making now, but they are 220hp standard, and this one has a nice little front mount that's hidden behind the grill, and a huge waste gate, which the guy thought may have a 12psi (7psi is std) spring in it. The general consensus is you can run up to 15psi safely on a factory engine/fuel/turbo set up, and it should make 250hp atw's. Will post pics of its grossness soon. Retards, VG.

  7. Pictureless update fail. So yea, Manu the GC put me on the the most epic GC ever who helped me clean my valves, barrels, head and lap in all the valves. Got all that back nice and clean, and valves sealing now! Got stuck in last night and put the head back together. And spent hours removing the baked on gasket from the bottom of the block. Shits all clean and ready to go back on. Hopefully i will fit the barrels and head tonight. That leaves tomorrow for setting up the cam and putting other stz like carbs and 'zorst on. Then hopefully it will be a runner again (and without the blowing back through the carb). Exciting times ahead. Looking forward to a bit more pep on my commutes than the GP125 can dish out! Found a picture, cos pictureless updates are major lame tbh:

  11. So been getting a few things sorted for the manwell conversion. Cleaned up the rust off my flywheel bolts and sprayed them with CRC in a snaplock bag, Bart also took my flywheel in to get machined(chur Bart!). Also on Bart's recommendations I have taken out the front and rear seals from my gearbox and the speedo drive o-ring to be replaced with new ones. Finally managed to get some 910 front springs from Skutaman to lower the front but they are a bigger diameter than the R30 springs :/ I may just cut the ones I have and reshape the end, depending on how much time and $$ I have left before the Akaroa cruise. So far I've dropped out the driveshaft and made a start on dropping the gearbox things are happening!

  12. The one i have is a front diff, has the reverse cut teeth, so runs the correct way on drive. not a rear diff whacked in the front spinning backwards, like they have factory

  13. Be a bit fucked with level xings/bridges with check rails if the sprocket is bigger. I have a jackshaft setup so will just use that and Manus idea of chain final drive to gear it nicely

  15. Blue walls will be a bit darker than id hoped so staying white for now, guys coming to do them this weekend and touch up the lady's datsun ones. Bullet caps won't work as there's not enough space between hub and rim.. Ultra shithouse but will come up with something adequate. The profile of the rim is not conducive to happy placement of trim rings. My only option is to glue them on or hold out for different rims. I got sick of the sun bleached gumbo door card carpets so gave them a dose Still average but will look good for 6 months. Also took rear number plate off and cleaned up the mess Behind it, cleaned up the plate, bent to suit bumper and blew it back on. It always sat hammy because it's only bolted at the bottom so the top sat outward. Dane the king-status GC has given me the filler panel between the bumper and grille, yet to Get inspired enough to tear the bumper off and put it on. Also need to repair 1x under light splash guard and replicate another from scratch for the other side.. To fit at the same time. Broke off my Wagoneers plaque, that was depressing. Threw a new thermostat in just incase it wasn't 100%. The shifter was always loose, even with a new bush. Hated it. I found a piece of copper pipe that had the same ID as my slightly-too-small bush, gave it a wee linnish and threw it in, shifts wonderfully now! Took it on a decent run, about 6hr round trip and slept in it, went great and returned good mileage, even though it was revving hard and fully maxing at 90. Rapt. Really staring to pine the old girl now, the search for comfort mods and chrome bits is intensifying. Have priced up new bailey channel and door rubbers, not bad. Carpet higher on the list than rubbers though. Looking to find a good piece of lace to pattern the roof to match the red wheels, also Make Some Curtains for the rear windows. Probably ditch the alloy slats under the roof racks for a cleaner look

  16. As promised, here is the stereo install we did. The bracket I welded up. The speakers Lou made (excuse the tape, we broke the glove box latch on day 1... still haven't found one) I decided that the radiator was looking a bit shabby and could do with replacing before the next long haul. Being an avid hoarder of shit, despite never owning a mk1 cortina before, I happen to have one in stock... score. For completeness of records, here is the boot with no petrol tank And here is how the roof rack looked yesterday (it has more paint on it now, use your imagination)

  17. I was just browsing our steel store, and found some 8" pipe that has a 7mm wall. Was thinking of cutting 50mm wide bands, and then splitting them in half ad the desired height, and welding the flat to them. Be the easiest and tidiest way of doing it i think.

  18. The cert guy I hope to use also said to have 3mm plate 50x60 with rounded edges ont he car floor as washers for the hoop bolts.

  19. If you have a two piece shaft you need two hoops. We had a car in for a certbthat had a three piece shaft haha. Lotta hoops.

  20. go jackshaft so you have more options to fuck with the reduction once it's rolling, cos you will want to once you're bored of doing 18kph, or 60kph after an hours run up and things can be more compact in size, final drive can be chain so the small sprocket can be tiny, allows you to work with a wider range of cheap/free belt pullies up front

  22. Moths are sweet.. it's huhu beetles that are cunts, flying round getting stuck in your hair and then biting the fuck out of your fingers when you try to extricate them, and if the biggest one I've seen was golden bay then marahau would prob follow suit.

  23. Found some damp patches around the edges of the tank so I've whipped it out and will take it to the shop tomorrow for repair. Cheers Pete

  24. so... updates thought I'd make a start on reassembly since I had all the bits needed, split crankcase before cleaning spent a good hour or two removing all the baked on gaskets, cleaning bearings, applying lube where needed, found these cracks throughout, they aren't deep but show on both sides :/ should I be concerned or just roll as is? was about to but.. Yeah, don't cheap out on gaskets. These shitty things weren't even close. Avoid 'NLK' branded ones at least. I've just spent hours measuring every single spec on the parts really, so it better be the one and only time I split it. Did buy some tires, last in stock at cycletreads and didn't have to pay gst, win. Oh, also rebuilt the carb, wired a modern rectifier, chopped spare ct90 bars to turn into a clubman-ish set. Should be updating more often now as the most tedious bits are over.

  26. I've been attacked by those when I lived in Auckland. Of course, I say attacked but really.. they were just moth'ing about and when you're not used to such a scale of moth they are initially quite startling if coming towards your head.

  29. Spent a few hours on the van yesterday. Decided I did not want the LPG fitted, so proceeded to remove it all. Only took a couple of hours to get everything out. Discovered the tank was full,(it was damn heavy!) and as I dropped it out on the ground the back of the van jumped up, must be a good 30mm higher in the rear now, sits level instead of bum down

  30. amidoingitright? After a fair bit of fucking around, looks like I need to shorten the shocks which is a pain. Got to pay the cost to be the boss though. Managed to fuck one of my sleeves so waiting for another to arrive then I can mock up both sides and check the height again. And I think my springs are waaaaaaaaaay to stiff, there is pratically no droop (they are 5.5 kg/mm). Might grab some closer to 3 kg/mm //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/33955-beavers-wuntwennywhy-coupe/page-23

  32. I reckon you modified one peg at a time, what you should have done was cut both of and swapped the "cups" left to right, they only fold slightly forwards, I'm thinking it could be a WOF issue.

  35. Long time coming, but, more updates! Wheels are now fitted, I have extractors and a 12G940 cylinder head on the way, some new problems have been identified and some more little issues have been fixed. In the last month I have bought: Lumenition HT leads Battery Cooper S studs K&N filter New Lucas alternator Extractors 12G head (negotiating) Chrome trim strips Been plodding away slowly, current alternator is on its last legs so that'll be replaced tomorrow morning (y) Here's what I've been up to the last few weekends: Battery was stuffed due to a failing alternator, so out it came, and in went the new: Minispares order First up, filter, new vs. old Leads were next, discovered my dizzy cap had been loose and my no.2 plug had also loosened about 3 turns too :/ Old earth cable was removed, and replaced: Removed all my old electric fan loom: Also got the carb apart, gave it a clean and look over, replaced the oil in the dashpot with lighter genuine SU oil and drove it around for a week, until today, where the drums and wheels were finally fitted Big thanks to Glenn Lawrence for his time and the use of his workshop space. Few issues have been found, pretty much all the wheel bearings need to be done at some stage and the left rear arm has play, so will need to be kitted. CV's are also completely knackered. Anyway, pressing on with far more fun stuff New drums: One on All on! It was then off home for a good clean before a thrash over Three Mile Hill, what a difference they've made to the handling never mind the looks! Needing flares unfortunately So stoked with it

  41. I fucked off the bogan wheels and got some 56 belair steels with spider caps and brand new dress rings. Now it looks like this The rings are ultra hard to get on and I don't trust them not to fly off, the caps need screwed on and there's not enough space to get a screw home. Also snow tyres ( sticky 195 60 15 Bridgestone blizzaks) another top purchase on my behalf (sarcasm) Brand new nuts from work look nice. Will try for blue walls next week but real understaffed at work so might be a push to get time (rage).
