  2. Bonnet finally done, so apart from a good tune she's finally finished! Quality pics to come soon, as Classic Car Magazine is about to do a feature on it shortly, so of course I'm going to steal those. Really happy with the final result though.

  3. So the generator wasn't working and made an awful noise. I switched it for a 1 wire alternator. The wiring needs to be replaced anyway and being positive earth that needs to change anyway. The alternator is a pretty cool one. It's made for drag racers and tractors. The drag racers wanted a light alternator that produce max amps at low rpm's. That's due to sitting in the queue with their rad fans cranking at idle for ages. Ill need to find a new pulley and do a bit of shimming to get it to line up but should be sweet. Means I can piss off the regulator box too.

  5. When for a evening drive and noticed it started getting quite smokey and smelt like oil. Got to @Geophys place and found this....oh no. Oil trail all the way up his drive and nothing on the dipstick.... Turns out the oil feed to the alternator (it's a diesel so has vacuum pump on the alt) had split and was squirting oil everywhere. Whipped that off and will get a new one made up and should be back on its way. Oil light never came on so I think I caught it just in time.....

  6. @Bearded Baldy remember that impco LPG carb I stole off you? It would take the smallest tickle with a drill to bolt on without even using an adapter. Would also need a bit of love from a dremel to match the intake port to the carb. It's an Impco ca125 for anybody who knows anything about them.

  8. Yea pretty much - I went through 4 below average bonnets before finding anything good enough to restore. The one on it is not correct for the year or series, it should have small bulge and vents (series 1), but paying $2.5k for one of those before you even start repairing it is ridiculous Even still the one I have has cost me a fortune by the time it was done, and tbh, I gave up caring about being correct a while ago, I just needed to finish the car

  9. Today I thougt I might clean the gearbox so it’s ready to go when the time comes. This culminated in spending 3 hours with Exoff, various scrubbing tools and the water blaster. I guess I had forgotten how truly filthy it was, I mean it would have made a Land Rover blush… Readers may remember I had noticed the crossmember and corresponding point on the chassis were a bit bent. Er, more than a bit it turns out. It’s amazing what you can see when stuff isn’t covered in greasy filth. Yikes! Also check out the gearbox mount. It’s about the consistency of cheesecake. A combination of vice and large hammers got the crossmember straightened. It’s now in the acid bath for superduper cleaning. I made a tool for my slide hammer which in concert with my biggest ball pein carefully straightened the chassis rail. Great success. And check out my shiny box.

  13. So, back to doing nothing at work. Continued using the bus, caught up with some fellow vw people while another mate visited in his thing. And I thought it was about time I should get a wof. Don't know how long it had been out by. But probably to long been that the gearbox and engine had been out. It went pretty well, only failed on a but of rust. Not to big of a deal. Pretty easy fix if you're not a perfectionist and just want to keep the bus alive. Got my little helper onto the job. She done a pretty good job of it. Put the lid back down and no ones to know the wiser Acquired the wof and took it for a drive to raglan with the family. Brought a folding bike rack that doesn't require a tow bar which is nice. Must have gone to @sentra Dave's house for the weekend as I see bad news in the back of that image. Bus still going strong and we came home 3 adults, one child, bikes and luggage. Cruised along really well on the motor way. Well this didn't last to long. I was heading out to sort out some upholstery and my alternator light came on. Thought I'd lost the fan belt so quickly pulled over, nope belt is still there, oil is still in the engine as it's also the oil pressure light. Weird the light was going out when I was idling but as soon as I gave it some revs the light came on. so I limped it yet again to the job and home again. Spoke to Paul at the vdubshoppe and he said the diodes or something might have gone outa wack. Chucked a multimeter on the battery and thing was reading something around 16 volts and climbing when reving it up. So time for a new alternator, que greg pulling his engine apart again. Insert new alternator and call it done. Back to doing warp speed again. I lie, speedo is way the fuck out. This is 110kph, I ideally need to get this fixed. But not to stressed as I know what speed I'm doing. Random fact, fits a full sheet of mdf in it. It also fits a Honda Monkey in it. Rather well. Got some of the following eyes and Drilled some holes in the floor, chucked a 50mmx50mm 4mm thick plate on the bottom under the floor and slapped a nut on it. Good anchors for the strops and holding the bike still. Took the monkey over to tga for a motorcycle event as i really dislike trailers for one bike. Just continued to use the bus more and more, getting my full use of the vehicle. Back over to tga for Xmas and then up to Dave's house for new years. From here it become smooth sailing and just used the bus locally for a bit. Nothing exciting happened other than heading to garlic masters in it, while we had a huge storm. Driving conditions were not the best but the bus went well. Tune in for my next adventure in the south island for nats.

  14. With help from @cubastreet we managed to get this thing started. I have 5 billion other projects but with the Imp going into tinkering retirement I don't mind having this to play on. The plan will be to put it on farm rego to move between the quarry and my two properties. I have no idea what it can carry but if it can manage 3.5 tonnes I'll use it to cart my dozer around. If it can't, I'll put a tipping bed on it. I know from driving it, it feels like a truck. Zero suspension travel. One thing I have no idea about is how to get a truck back on the road having been out of rego. Although I do have a couple of shreds of evidence it was registered back in the day floating around the cab. I'd love to do a chassis swap and lower it but I can only imagine that would be an LVV nightmare. So I'll probably go the path of least resistance here.

  15. Hello friends , so I decided to get my 84 honda atc 200 a big sister , although she is a bit sick at the moment. I brought the 200 and got it going well but decided I needed another trike in my life. Sooo I brought the 250es from a guy up by Horopito car museum. Got it for a steal but boy it's a big job. frame rusted by foot pegs, motor not running , massive oil leak from left hand side cover . I have fixed the side cover gasket and also had the motor running now. I put the 250 up on stands tonight so I could make this build thread. So far I've brought a second hand CDI for it , brought another rear rack and fixed the wiring and repaired the wiring behind the kill switch. The previous owner couldn't get it running. I plan to get it purring , then strip it and repair the frame. cheers. Sorry bout the novel. top bike is the 200es that hoons.

  23. Sheesh, been a while since I've made any post worthy progress on this thing. I've been ticking away slowly as time allows and trying not to let my OCD kick in too much. All the glass is now in but not before spending considerable periods of time removing old tint from the windows that was wrinkled and just generally shit. I'd like to re tint the car at some stage but that can wait until its back on the road. I gave all the rubber seals and slides a good clean and lube up while I was at it. For a while I had miss-placed one of the rear quarter pop out window latches which resulted in many hours of trolling the internet trying to find someone with one spare to no avail. Its surprisingly hard to find spare parts for these cars now which serves me right for throwing out all the spares I had years ago, to be fair I didn't think I would ever have another one. All the doors and guards got temporarily hung so to see how things would line up as they were all from the parts car - I really should have pre-fitted everything before paint in hindsight as there were a few small things to sort out. The lower guard fixing point behind the passenger side wheel was a bit of a dick with the previous owners snapping a bolt off in there so that was carefully drilled and tapped. Also the front left body outer wing that supports the bracket on the front guard where the bumper bracket bolts on was bent back about 8mm from where it needed to be for some reason. Measuring the rest of the front and its straight so I think it might have just been knocked out of alignment a bit somehow - its only light panel steel quite separate from the main body so it was easy enough to bend back. All easy stuff to fix but time consuming. Here's it with a few bits hanging on it. With the return to a standard hood latch and center radiator support the old radiator setup got thrown in the bin. I got given a very used ali Honda radiator fits behind the radiator support with a few mods. I had to relocate the inlet/outlet, move the lower mounting pin, and make up a couple of tabs at the top. Didn't take many photos of this part. Also had to make up a new water neck off the head - same as Ive done on the 4agte EP71. The radiator is now in and I picked up some rubber pipes from Supercheap that fitted with some trimming. I'll probably make up some flat bar straps in front of the radiator that the fan mounts onto next. While it I was at it I wrapped the headers in heat wrap - probably wont help much but at least they don't look quite as shit. The bumpers were looking pretty tired and no amount of cleaning would get them back to a nice black, so the heat gun got brought out for a dust over which actually worked pretty well! With some light tire black treatment they have come up good enough for now. The front lip was in a similar state and after some work and a light coat of satin black it came up really well and got fitted. Last year I managed to pick up some side skirts that were factory white so they got painted at the same time as the shell. I was thinking about changing them to be black but for now they are refitted and I'll re think this once I've got the car back on the road and thought about the wheel situation some more. All the locks were stuffed with only one working and even then only marginally, and with original locks really hard to find second hand with matching keys I took the easy way out and fitted Solexs haha! I bled up the radiator and drove it out of the shed for a quick wash and a couple of photos. Then tucked it back away till next time. The interior is 90% in and partially cleaned. Im missing heaps of fittings so hunting for some of these to get finish off the door cars - if anyone knows of a source please let me know. I mainly need the blue inserts but complete sets would be handy. Until next time...

  24. The first three things on the list I need to sort: The carb is leaking and doesn't inspire confidence. I might look at replacing it with a new carter single barrel. The generator has a rooted bearing. Makes an awful noise. I was worried it was the water pump but that seems fine although it does need new rad hoses. As you can see here there is a stuck valve. I have soaked it with loads of oil last night and this morning. I'm reluctant to hit it with a hammer just yet.

  25. I fucked up, when carrying out some epoxy primer work in the shed, my seats were up on a shelf uncovered, and the overspray settled into the grain, unable to be cleaned out - thankfully insurance came to the party and I've now got some fresh trim for the coupe, from Waikumete auto upholstery.

  26. So every now and then I find my self buying and restoring kirby vacuum cleaners.... I just find them cool mechanicly they are a throw back to when things lasted and haven't changed fuck all in 60 years. I found this particular one at cash converters and bargained them down because I knew it had been there a while. If you have no idea what these things are think Morrison reel mower but for your carpet they have a spinning brush that basically combs your carpet up all poofy like an 80's women's hair. Just like a Hillman hunter rather than a Rolls Royce they just seem to survive. Tonight I ripped it to bits and polished the housings up to get it looking loved again. Will fit new drive belts tomorrow and fit the cleaned up bag and see how it goes.

  27. 2 big design flaws make them pretty hard to find in good condition. They have rust traps along the front of the inner frame where the hinge reinforcing is. Traps shit and the frame rots through. And the bonnet stay setup. When the plastic roller fails, the bonnet stay doesn't work, so people over-tilt the bonnet which either stresses the frame and pops the old brittle glue off the skin along front, leaving it to flap around and eventually stress crack, or the over-tilting just buckles the outer skin. Looks great Kelly. How much work did they have to do to the bonnet in the end? Was it a 'skin off frame' job or not that bad?

  28. I put a Kiwi Head on my 4D56 Pajero...and it lasted 3 weeks. Got another one out of them and that one lasted 3 years...finally got a NZ new L200 head for it and no more problems. Both Kiwi heads leaked behind the inlet valves. Many years ago of course, and I guess they have changed supplier by now.

  32. I suspect that the breakaway torque each time you went to creep up on the 105 degrees means there is a decent chance that you'd apply more torque than a single swing to 105 degrees. It might well be like @Hemi says and not matter because the clamping load has been met and that's what keeps the head gasket happy. If I'm wrong on this though I'm happy to be educated.

  33. I miss my old V1, was def a good unit, got a $600ish uniden, has gps etc, has def saved me a couple of times and range and accuracy is pretty good. $1500 unit would have to be a heap better to justify me going past this level of cost.

  35. While working on the house I also managed a few sneaky coats on the suspension, these have all been packed away awaiting reassembly which is actually a blessing, I always seem to rush from paint to car so getting some time to set will hopefully pay off. Back to panel work, again, I soon decided the repair on the drivers door wasn't cool, the fold at the bottom just wasn't that straight, especially next to the sill. This happened because I don't have a folder wide enough and tried to form the bend manually, way too difficult for my talent levels. So, off with repair #1 Careful cut, fold weld of the new panel to give a laser straight bottom edge, wave the wand and... First panel fit down, not concours perfect, but more than enough after fettling to satisfy this rookie. A few more weekends have come and gone, not all productive for painting, the usual adult duties and bad weather has kept the body shell tucked away, not to give up all hope I started sorting out smaller stuff. Originally I had planned to Zinc plate all the fasteners, sorting through this wasn't really an option, existing bolts are old/damaged/incorrect head etc not to mention new bolts are cheap ex West Island in full car kits, a stack of effort with not much gain. As usual curiosity got the better of me, one wet afternoon I stumbled on parkerising, pretty much boil up the bolts in a Phosphoric acid based tonic which is mildly protective but more so, quite a nice matte finish, test pieces came up pretty good. So I proceeded to strip and treat the hinges, main reason was I can't decide if I should paint them and if so, how to go about it, at least in this way they have some protection in storage until I make up my mind and the coating makes a pretty good base. Paint stripped left, blasted and parkerised right. Eventually the weather did play nice and I got primer onto the interior. Very excited to be getting to this stage, not much in the way of re-fitting suspension which will allow grinder access to the front and back which the rotisserie is blocking from final clean up. On the subject of that, Bart, you're on notice, the rotisserie is very close to being dropped back Right, over the upload limit so be sure to tune in next time, the paint rep has dropped off some goodies.

  39. Day one, we rode small bikes wlthrough the Lewis pass. It was pretty cold tbh. Gassed up again at springs junction, and 5ook a last minute detour down the west bank (unsealed road) which came out near Maruia. We then pressed on to Maruia Saddle road, which was a very enjoyable trail. A boomer in a campervan forewarned us there were a number of people on push bikes coming the other way. Quite the way in, we encountered two old blokes on bikes. One had blacked out while riding and was incapacitated. His companion had set off an PLB. (And Initially though we were the ones responding. Mof cancelled the call for him, (he seemed a bit away with the fairy's too tbh) and we loaded up their bikes and gave them a ride back to murchison. There we gassed up again, before gorging ourselves on delicious premium spicy tubes of mystery meat. Slathered in sauce, and washed down with a mixture of cheap beer/and or solftdrink/water. With our bellies brimming with dead animals, we again set off. This time turning off up mangles valley road, which was another thoroughly enjoyable ride taking up to Lake rotoroa. We regrouped again here, and fucked about for longer than I would have liked. (I think it was bike trouble tbh) Eventually we then set off for the nightmarish hellscape that is the Porika track. It was tricky last year, this year the very first section was almost insurmountable. (For a ride as unskilled as me) after the first hairpin it was more or less manageable. (But challenging none the less) @Hungry hit a rock got bounced off course and over the edge. Fortunately a team of helpers and Harry's winch were able to recover his machine from around 5m down a pretty steep bank. I didnt recall the decent being as bad last year either. I hit a big patch of clay and dropped the NBC. Once we got clear of that misery, it was WOT all the way down to St. Arnaud for a gas up. Followed by another wide open throttle run into Nelson. By then it was 730, and many of us were cooked. A nice curry and a few drinks went down a treat. (Except for wankbankA100 who proclaimed the curry to have been cursed. After a much needed sleep, we set off for a much nice days ride. Over the wongamoas, and out to French pass. With a stop st Okiwi bay going both ways. (The road was narrow and winding in places) we were also treated to some breathtaking views. (I cant wait to go back tbh) there was a great spot to park up at the very end of the road. Once again we stuffed ourselves with the flash of dead animals, burned over dinosaur gas. The ride back to the main road was pretty speedy. The we had a protracted stop at rai valley to fix a broken clutch cable on the RGV. One back up vehicle had had their fill of twisty stuff for one day, and headed straight back to Blenhole. The rest of us took the glorious queen Charlotte dr. Not long I to this the spacy 250 gave its last fuck, and compression exited the chat. We fanged it at extra legal speeds. The ride back to blenhole was a meh one. Once I finally located my accomadation, we gapped to the nearest pub for some much needed sustenance and hydration. (A good time was had by all) The morning saw a dusty start. (The riders, not the road) and we embarked up the wairau valley for a long slow slog uphill, and Into a headwind. Once again at St. Arnaud was refilled, and then set off for the next leg. Once the seal ended, the track to the toll gate was both rough as guts, and heavily shaded by native bush. Which made reading the road nearly impossible. The first river crossing was cold and wet. And so few the feet of many following the crossing. Beyond the toll gate the road gradually improved. And we were treated to some truely breathtaking scenery. Beyond the very top of the wairau valley, the road improved out of site. And the more adventurous riders fucking sent it. Lake tennyson provided us with a sunny venue for the bbq lunch. We added a sticker up in the rafters of the shelter beside the one from two years prior. After lunch the roads were fast and free flowing. With two riders running out of talent. One of then went right off the road. With a bit of team work we maneuvered the bike down to a lower track. It started, and after the wheel and forks were realigned the rider continued on in the same manor. We reached the junction, and turned left, to take the longer way back to the camp. Jollies pass road was rough as guts. Naturally we took a detour off that track to prolong the run as long as possible. Back at camp we finished off the beers, and loaded up the bikes. The GC prize was awarded to MOF for letting PeeDubs ride his bike for such a huge chunk of the ride. 850kms ish, three massive days. Saw a few old friends again, and made some new ones too. All I cant say is, Bring on next year! The Mackenzie moped melee 2024. LETS RIDE BIKES!!!!!!!
