  1. About a year ago my daughter the chef suggested that a hot smoker would be the business. Not wanting to rush these things I started looking for the necessary things to build it from. First up for the heat chamber/smoke generator I picked up a very small charcoal BBQ thing that was barrel shaped. Then a friend gave me a small Morris Lubricants drum. I raided a junk pile for a gas BBQ burner (It was always going to be GAS fired) and piezo igniter. Fitted the gas burner to the charcoal BBQ, joined the two together and added a chimney also reused an old camp chairs legs for the stand. Ended up with this. The smoke if generated but wood chips in a container in the black portion. The females in the house want to call it "morris" however I feel "Nessie" is a better fit looking at its overall form. The only other thing added is a fancy dual channel bluetooth attached thermometer (the chef insisted on this!) We did tried out a beef brisket for the first thing and struggled to get to a high enough temp - we were intending to smoke for 12 hours ended up with 15 and still not quite the internal temp we were after. The result was more like jerky than we wanted - I like it - but not quite right. I reamed out the gas jet and partially blocked off the flue and could now easily get to the required chamber temp ~ 170 deg c Next attempt was a very large chicken - started off by soaking it in brine for 12 hours and then smoking for 3 until cooked - Manaka was used. Looks like this at full noise. Resulted in this, which was excellent very moist and great colour - it was very big chook very happy with the taste.

  3. Right, that's good enough for now. Obviously will need some further work before paint, which wont happen until I shrink all the roof down. With a bit of panel beating I should get it pretty much spot on, I would like to get away with just a coat of primer filler. I might need a smear of filler on the top weld, I couldn't get the roof and patch to sit quite right, so I have a little bit of a valley. I did however just make up a panel spoon to get up in that corner and edge and got it 90% in a few minutes, so theres still hope. Not sure if that line along the inside of the drip rail is supposed to be there, its not there at all on the other side. Might be a seam from where the gutter joins the drip rail. I suppose il replicate it with a little filler. You don't really see it when the gutter trim is on (yes it still fits, I tried. not the drivers side tho, I need to remove a hair of thickness on my new inner A pillar)

  6. Pulled out my old 65 Mk 1 GT out of storage today where it’s been sitting for about 3 years. Chucked a battery in after about a miniute of cranking it burst into life. The engine is as fumey as fuck so I reckon the rings are all gummed up and the tacho has stopped working plus a couple of lights.I have owned it about 14 years and in that time done about 2000 Miles if that. The paint is shit with humidity blisters and I bought it that colour which I have always hated, it was originally an Ermine White car, so I’ll work out in the next couple of weeks what to do with it. Current thinking is rebuild the engine and go over all the mechanicals, get Chris R to sort the electrics and get it back on the road. Then either sell it or repaint it Ermine white and keep it.

  7. So getting exhaust looked at on Tuesday, was just going to get the turbo hooked up to the factory system but have since decided I really should commit and get a full system done. Downpipe off turbo is 2.5” I’m pretty sure so will likely go for that. also had a look at the non operational right rear brake, found the culprit (see picture, leaking cylinder) So now need to try and find a new cylinder and shoes and the shoes are pretty contaminated

  10. Time To Upgrade So It failed its next WOF on the front shocks ad ball joints, which I knew was coming. So it was time to start spending some cash money, and finally get the thing low. I will keep all the old parts so if for some odd reason i want it stock height again it can be returned simply. dspec_tt131 from here posted he was parting out his GX61. So I jumped on his modified S13 BC gold struts, to cut out the hassle of building my own. They also came with some RCA's. These have since also been crack tested and are ready for cert. I also managed to get a brand new pair of MX73 BC gold rear struts and springs. dspec_tt131 GX61 I have also pulled apart the front suspension and tidied it up. Replacing ball joints, tie rods, sway-bar links, and bushes. The wheel arches also got hit with some CRC Proseal. Two months till Toyota Fest….. It’s going to be close.

  12. After making the shinker/stretchers ,i made a foot operated stand for them both.as i want these up against the wall ,a single post setup wasnt going to cut it.fairly simple to make, just box section and plate .the foot lever removes when not in use so its not a hazard

  13. Piston received a little love. It was black as black can be with carbon build up. Here it is after 10 minutes sanding: Still looked shit...so I broke out the random orbital, couple minutes on that, then on the buffer wheel...finally got the dome polished where it needs to be. That was way more work than anticipated.

  16. MINE, thanks @Shakotom Going for the rusty minimalist look, I got stuck in today. Still full of enthusiasm from the ride yesterday. I realized the other half of the swingarm was under the belt guard (I thought the belt side was completely different until looking)- so drilled out the spot welds. Then removed a few other bolt on brackets and ordered another coil 3 in the box, the only one that kinda worked sent millions of volts through the frame like some kinda april fools gag. I also calculated the size of my new fuel tank- exactly two liters. How big is the tank on that bike you had yesterday Tom?

  17. The rust was removed from around the wiper panel, and as expected, there was far more than you could see. Then with the rear glass out a small amount of rust was starting in the frame, so that was fixed, a previous impact on the front edge of the bonnet needed looking at and then and then and then, you get it. Beckys planed small tidy up has hit a bump (me) and has snowballed . woops. But in good news, the wellside will have a new floor and the ute will be ten times tidier than before, and that sweet racing stripe will be gone.

  19. Did 900km going down to Alexandra and back for Xmas, went great. Sucked getting stuck behind campers and boats through the twisty bits though! brother gave it a tune because we were a bit retarded according to the cam specs and It’s going great now. mate brought me a 120Y swaybar as part payment for cutting his rust, this is 4mm bigger and straight swap- so bare metalled and painted it all nice, new bushes etc. then snapped a bolt putting it back together. lucky I did cause I found rust in the rail, so out came two patches and in went rust kill, etch and new steel. Bolt came out while drilling so that was awesome. Took castor rod out to gain space to broken bolt and found those bushes to be pretty shagged too, so I’ll order some more.

  20. Yet another productive week! Spent the weeknights after work cleaning up the engine bay and reassembling the interior, in some spots I'd found almost 1/2 inch thick of oil on the cross-member, so totally worth while! Dropped the motor & trans in Fri evening and spent the weekend putting everything together, gave it a hoon around the block sat evening without the front end fascia on, got many odd looks but one hell of a rewarding experience. Sunday I'd put the last few things together and she ran great! Still need to work out a few minor things (like getting a WOF). Been surprisingly simple working on this ol' Honda, probably the ideal car to learn on, and looking forward to learning more on it in the coming months when I rebuild the original engine and touch up exterior/interior things.

  21. Raided my spares and have got enough to rebuild the engine. Just need to get mains and bigend bearings once crank size is known. Will be running steel caps, lotus 125E rods, 60thou Mahle pistons, all steel rocker gear, cleaned up GT head all held together with ARP fasteners. Cam will be old school A2 Cosworth grind and vernier timing gear. I will run the original Weber rejetted however the engine is all set up to run twin 40 DCOE,s. I’ll pull the engine and box next weekend and also give the gearbox a birthday with new bearings and seals etc. I’ll pull out the front suspension and get that all powedercoated plus put new brake discs on. It already has had the struts done with Bilstein inserts and king springs and the brakes have stainless sleeves so just a rekit required there. Rear end will be the same and I’ll put new bearings in the diff head as it had a bit of a whine from memory.

  22. Time for me to stop being useless and organise a meet! Just to get back into the swing of things, this month's meet will be at Burger Fuel across the road from the plaza. Park up in The Plaza car park at 6.30, spin some yarns, and head over to Burger Fuel when we're feeling peckish. Discuss meets here Chur, see you there

  23. yea ive been making sure the boards continue across the doors where i can. today i did this. if you'd have asked me this morning if i could get all 8 doors done in a day i would have said "fuck yea, too easy". but this takes fucking ages. there is massive amounts of sanding to do all the radius edges and it just takes way longer than you think. ill finish the last two tomorrow. the dark board 3rd down from the top is interesting. without any oil on them they all looked the same but with a bit of oil it went super dark, way darker that the others. no matter. 2018-01-19_05-55-49 by sheepers, on Flickr 2018-01-19_05-55-22 by sheepers, on Flickr

  25. Today marks one year since Bart and Karl delivered this specimen unto my driveway. Seems like longer? Been a funny year. Good journey, plenty of highs and crushing lows but it goes good, looks decent and I have all my fingers, so. Recently lowered it more in the front, electronic dizzy conversion with appropriate coil, sorted a genuine ignition barrel, new gas cap. my mate wants it for a wedding car next year so that will force me to cut and polish it after fixing a few bits where things fell on it or it fell on things (bonnet fell on engine crane, cracked paint, and lamp fell on guard, sharp dent) will be good have the peel gone fer good. good journey with good group of fellas, I thought I’d spruce it up and sell it down the track but it’s good fun so I doubt that will happen!

  30. Here's a before and after photo to see the difference And after And hopefully that equally more flow, and will be one of many things that add up to more power. Next up for the motor is to calculate its port areas, timing, squish band and compression...then tweak those with yet more porting.

  31. In clarification Ness insurance was on her westpac credit card. We chucked some flights and accommodation in to qualify. The only reason I was not covered was we had one day different in our itinerary. X2 on avoiding the interstate tbh. There is so much random cool stuff to be seen by not going on them
