  1. Thought I'd better post a pic of my latest family member and life long project car... NZ new, second owner and only 77 thou k's now, rust proofed when new so very very tidy, everything works including air ride, digital dash and not a single squeak or rattle while driving. I real gem I recon. Got a few reliability plans for the EA82T to keep it alive forever (under bonnet air/water intercooler to get that intake temps lower and stainless exhaust plus a few other tricks learnt over the years), but keeping it as standard as possible will be the mantra throughout. Bit of a dream car for me to be honest from the moment I saw one in 1985 at a motor show, i even had the Tamiya model of this exact car/colour/interior as a kid!. I think it's an interesting car from an interesting time that people either love or hate (both the time and the car haha) Joins my Brumby as a permanent member of the family along with the everyday drivers.

  2. A small but substantial update to bring this post back from the dead.. After saving for a good long while i was able to quire enough to go down to turners and purchase a 2001 Ford Mondeo. Bidding in an auction was an experience on its own, i was the only one to bid getting it for a mere $630.00. Driving it home that same day (/definaltey not driving it because its de-reg) It will be paired with a sierra 5 speed box i have from a previous deal.

  3. Well wof on Monday never happened, due to a bunch of fucking around with different parts places trying to figure out this steering idler. Anyway way figured out what I needed about 5.25 yesterday evening and much to brad doritos naysaying they turned up today. So hopefully everything is now repaired to vtnz standard. Idler went in this evening. Off to vtnz tomorrow again. Digits crossed.

  6. where you getting your information from mate? Seems interesting that 90% of the modified anglia scene in the UK swap this exact engine in, now, if theyre so shit why would they do that? The car has less than 100thou kms on it and is absolutely fine. This site never ceases to amaze me. Swap will be going ahead

  8. Dragged this home yesterday. IMG_20170513_102342 by John Bell, on Flickr Needs a little bit of a birthday, but really is in pretty good shape for its age. It came from some family friends who have had it since the beginning of time so has a bit of a history. I'm new to Land Rover details, but I think its an early Series 3, although the plate inside the cab says 2A. Its been fitted with a Nissan LD28, and has no sign of a cert, but has been issued Warrants in this configuration so I need to figure out if it ever had a declaration and if a copy still exists. The LD28 doesn't exactly fit very well though, and the diff head hits the oil pump, this apparently is a fairly common conversion so I'm curious as to how others have gotten around this. Apparently the original motor didn't have anything wrong with it, and is still available so if it is too difficult to get the LD28 to work (and legal) I may look into this. The tyres are a set of very perished 'oodYear' retreads which I find hilarious, my guess is that GoodYear didn't like you reusing their casings for retreads so they all have the 'G' rubbed off. The wooden deck is solid enough for now, but it might need a bit of attention, I'd love to be able to fit a wellside to it possibly. For now its home back indoors. I've got to sort out a few things before I get into it properly. I'm pretty excited to have a project that you can buy parts for. 11. I'd just recondition the factory heater since it's already out. It's not like you're going to get 40 years of leaves and shit in it as an occasional car that's probably going to be kept undercover, plus they work well when they work. Maybe could do with a gruntier fan, but we had mine in an absolute monsoon a few weeks back in Hamilton and it demisted just fine. Cutting firewalls is IMO just a giant clusterfuck of a thing, perhaps suss out if you actually need to, and if you don't then retain that factory heater.

  13. NO FOR GODS SAKE NO I don't mean to offend but a 2001 Ford Mondau is the most shit car money can buy, it was cheep because its shit, they are crap motors, it will be rooted, they chug oil. Get a price on a thermostat, you will find its worth more than the whole car and that is no joke.

  14. OK so the SAFC is working, I can change fuel percentage at idle and see the AFR's change, as well as hear the engine note change. Not sure if the Knock reading is working, will recheck that. The weather has been wet so I can't test drive with primered rear quarters that want to suck up water. So I've bought some White Autothane paint, primer, thinner, filler, mixing cups, filters, proper mask etc etc. I've welded up the Aerial hole, wiper hole and high stop light since it is covered by the wing. Lots of sanding etc. Sanded rear quarters, yay sanding. Don't have to worry too much here since it's covered by fibreglass panels. Finally got the damn tail lights out, they were silicon sealered in there and I couldn't get to it. But finally off after making a weird shaped knife blade and some levering to break the bond. Surprisingly didn't break the lights, cool. The roof has been painted with terrible black paint, no prep and looks shit. So I took it back as far as I could with the orbital sander, dust every where. Love sanding. But the original paint underneath wasn't in good condition so time for the paint stripper. Fck off shitty paint: Started sanding rear: Primered overfenders, used special primer for fibreglass. The colour is actually pretty cool, would look good with clear coat.... Also trimmed the rear fibreglass arches because wide wheels are wide: Where it will sit until ready to paint:

  15. Limit straps on may have an issue with inner guard clearance. fine when the suspension is fully compressed on both sides. but at full flex, have tyre to inner guard contact. because of where bumpstops are mounted. will likely never get this much travel,, so maybe a non issue. putting a rubber bumpstop on shock shaft, or cutting the inner guard some more will fix it, if it turns out to be a drama currently getting the outer towers sorted. passenger side almost ready for paint on bumps

  19. Just went and picked up a 2nd hand cage. The 80year old man made it 20years ago and its still pretty good..its about 200mm short (not really worried about that) but all in all a good fit...even came with a cattle door ( pretty heavy so may just take it off and use mesh) good for loading the kids.

  22. While your attacking the firewall should recess it 100mm so a Barra will fit..... Probably better to fit heater unit out of something 90's spec and Japanese the triumph units fill with leaves and rust out, or the internal gates seize and give you full time hot feet or wind in your face.

  23. Have been getting some work done on the upper tailgate. Stripped most of the paint off with stripper, acetone, and wire brushes. Patched the rust holes with new steel. I drilled the spot welds and bent the seal channel out of the way so I could fix the rust under it. The other side wasn't as bad. The lower edges are fairly rusty inside, but I'm not going to dismantle the whole thing, will slosh some paint and cavity wax inside before it goes back on the car. I made the patches fit quite neatly and did some of the welding with the new TIG, then used the MIG to fill the holes I made (bah). TIG means less grinding, but I'm still getting used to it. Also welded up the holes used for the self-tappers that had been holding the glass in, and a few other pinholes. Back on the car for a test fit, it used to rub on one side and I wanted to check that out. It seems like there is enough adjustment to in the mounting holes to fit OK. I needed to tidy up the area where this hinge attaches the frame as it's been bent by a gorilla in the past. I'll also get some hex-socket screws to replace the big phillips head screw which hold the hinges as some have been replaced by hex head bolts in the past.

  24. Not much progress, spent a chunk of Saturday afternoon playing musical wheels with Glyn, the owner of the big blue mig in my garage, and his 1965 396 big block SS Impala. We swapped the 14x7 and 14x8 S/S cragars off my Firebird onto his impala. The 14x8s on the back fill out the guards nicely, so we left them on for a while. Firebird needs some love but not until the Holden is finished. I did get to Zebra parts today for a VZ commodore brake master cylinder. Mr Vapour got the last one I had when he spied it with the booster. I thought that there would be lots of them around, lots of the VT, VX and VY's being wrecked, not many VZ. Hopefully tomorrow will see me in the garage again, a night off from being the kids taxi.

  33. pads welded on diff for hydro bumps. in the pic below the whole weight of the truck is on them. about 10-15mm travel left and they are super hard at this point. jumping up and down on the front of the truck, they move a little further. the first part of the travel is fairly soft, can push them down a bit by hand if put all my weight on them. Im not sure what kinda pressure they are shipped with, but they are tuneable by adjusting the nitrogen charge between 100 - 250psi. along with the coilovers, guessing im going to have to spend a bit of time getting it all to work together nicely. but should hopefully destroy the leaf spring setup out of the box . still have to fit limit straps and brake lines in there somehow..

  34. new proportioning valve with one new line to the diff flexi (other one is from teh master and thats a hoist job, so nope!) - i slotted the adjustment slot a bit more than factory so it may even have enough rotation to work with the lowered suspension now. You can also see the end of the 'new' (i mean better) hand brake cable from my parts stash featuring intact dust boots and slightly less used new pinion seal in. New Remsa pads and discs, the old discs are ok, but the old pads were very sticky from when i was having caliper leaks ages ago. Id suspect the brake issues were: - sticky pads - master was a bit grogey - maybe old proportioning valve - everything else is nice to do and i may as well since ive got the bits now The blue HEL brake lines i installed a while ago. The calipers dont leak, so Ive theft them well enough alone! Also wanged in some lower rear shackle bushes, these were the only ones that needed replacing, lucky cause i only these ones to use - i got a 10 pack cheap, they fit the 2300 too but it used 4, so 4 still left!. Ended up with quite a pile of old and crusty stuff replaced Nearly ready to go back in, Just need to bleed them now. I have a few other things on the list to do including pondering the following questions: - why does the battery keep going flat? (ignition switch needs rewiring i think) - why do the tyres keep going flat? (time to swap the rims for another set) - why does my Italian car that lives at the beach like to rust? (time to extend the garage)

  35. So if you were wondering what those things do, they are 3" travel hydro bumpstops. If there are any hidden objects hidden in the grass, whilst rounding up the cows. these will prevent occupants of said vehicle, from cranium to moldy hood lining contact. or just doing skiz cunt jumps. pretty much overkill for this truck, but while im under there..

  36. Something we briefly talked about at some stage, is a trip out to the Mangahao Dams in Shannon. If we get a half decent number of people I may be able to get us access to the power station for a walk around and they have a museum of sorts there as well. Either way the three dams are all public access (can drive to them all, not slam friendly though) and I can teach you all about being a beaver/spin some yarns

Got a few small runs but stoked with it. not bad for a rookie!
