  1. The display works well with the power supply on the clock board I've taken a vid of it when I'm earthing out each cathode individually. The zero is on constantly because there is a missing resistor. Looks slightly better in HD https://www.facebook.com/chris.read.1232/videos/711316032336925/?pnref=story

  2. THE WORST THREAD UPDATE EVER. Just thought I'd say that before anyone got too excited. My new rims are nearly here. Techno Phantoms at a good price. Having second thoughts tho. Weather is supposed to be OK on Saturday (dry, 10 degrees Celstigrade). Will get car out for a little blast through the lanes and a clean. I may even post a vid. However, it may snow so I might not bother. Thank you for 20 seconds of your life.

  9. Howdy, Went to the Kumeu show on Saturday for the first proper road test and she drives suuuuper smooth. Sits at 60-65mph no problem, quiet as with nice temp and oil pressure. Suspension and steering are awesome but gearbox is a bit heavy and crunches going to first or reverse sometimes. Picked up Evan on the way and tried to beat the heat. Met up with the other oldschoolers, managed a park a couple of cars away. Because nobody likes a picture-less update: Photo cred to Karljsw from the Z club. Got heaps of different folks oogling even at a more V8/American/Muzz event (more than I expected anyway). My folks also got a new pup so I thought I'd get the token "bitches love datsuns" photo: Also got time off and signed up for nats so SEE YOUS THERE AYE

  14. Little update and to leave some info for other BMC pepz. Realised we were sold the wrong water temp sensor - we received a GTR-104 rather than a GTR-101. So the resistance at normal operating temp was lower than the old sensor - making the gauge read H constantly. Instead of trying to find a matching sensor for our gauge we decided to get a whole new gauge/sensor combo to rule out any inaccuracies. This went according to plan except that we had to turn off the thread of the new sensor and re thread it to 5/8 UNF. Feels awesome to drive - much more go without the clutch being caked in oil. WoF and rego this weekend and then we can lay out a plan of attack for the next wee while.

  16. Here is a before and after shot of the "banana" rx2 s3 cross member. These are desirable due to the fact they are for front mounted 12a engines. I'm running an old school 13b with a 12a front cover. After a wire wheel and rust etch. I will be painting it black along with the steering components soon. And a good mate gave me this K&N Carbon fibre intake to whack onto the quad throttle body intake we are working on. Think these are used on sprint cars.

  17. What had I actually bought then ? Its a June 1972 car so one of the last made and was originally dark green metallic. Actually a 2000GT so manual windows but has the 130 ps twin artichoke GT-X engine. Although I bought it as stock it has got some pretty hard springs and has been lowered to a point that you can just get your fist under the sump. Low enough for round here. The rear arches have been rolled to fit something a bit larger than the 6 x 14 +12's that are on there. Rust-wise it's a goodun. There seems to be a bit of an internet myth that every Hako has no floor or chassis legs left. Not true. I'm sure it'll go flakey at some point but at the moment it's seems ok. The engine is strong, feels like more than 128 hp to me but with out pulling it apart I'll never know. Drives nicely, few little niggles but I'm hoping to sort it out properly this Spring. Got a wedding job in July. Just done servicing so far. More pics before y'all nod off Action picture of me, I don't normally move fast enough to go blurry There had always been something bugging me about what the car looked like. Finally the penny dropped, the sills were black. Out with a couple of tins of underguard, instant lowering ! I've also lined the bonnet up properly since.... That's about it really so far. I have some wheels on the way from Japan that should look the bollocks and I'm going to get a front spoiler too. I definitely wont be chopping those rear arches though, loving the Surfline. Engine wise, not really sure what to do. The L20 isn't that tuneable apparently, if I go silly L28 with Triples I'm then going to have to upgrade the brakes too. And the clutch. And probably my Cajones .Time will tell. Ultimatley I'd like to paint it ivory or dark red. I'll get stuck into it over the next weeks and post pics and words. Thanks for reading !

  18. I was rummaging around dads shed and found some old nixie tubes he had found when he was my age. I thought i'd like to make a clock so found a kit, got side tracked and ordered more nixi stuff. The kit arrived just before Christmas so I have been working on it when I'm motivated enough. When I was trying to find info on the hitachi nixies of dads (still can't) I found this site http://www.gstube.com/ and they had a interesting looking display so I ordered it, It arrived today finally. circuit board and stuff Dads tiny hitachi nixies The russian display and dekatraon

  20. IT LIVES!!!! So I got it to start and sorted the timing. I used an SR20 base maps, link forums suggested that. Trying to get all the air out of the cooling system. No oil or water leaks so far. It runs rough as. Like it's running on 3. I'll pull the plugs and see what they are like. IC pipe is still not done, I need to modify the bit of pipe that has the BOV, IAC take-off and IAT sensor so it will fit. My turbo oil line still needs shortening, it's 4 or 5 times too long.

  21. New Year-Time to go on a diet. I had always planned on keeping full interior but have come to the realization its pointless and just punishing myself when i could send certain pieces off to people who actually require them and in the process give myself a bit more power since i dont plan on adding a turbo. In the past week ive removed and weighed a few things for curiosity more than anything front seats 18.6kg each rear seat 21kg spare wheel 13.7kg sound deadening removed so far 14.2kg carpet unknown lets say 5kg =91.1kg To remove the sound deadening i used science - dry ice mixed with isopropynol This worked a treat and i highly recommend it, all you do is smash the dry ice with a hammer in a plastic bucket untill its a fine powder(carefull not to break bucket), then you poor in the isopropynol and give it a good mix, i just used a concreting trowel. It makes a kind of gel which you poor into the area with the sound deadening and let the magic happen. This video was pretty helpful Ive also acquired a pair of out of date sabelt 6 point harnesses today which will be going in with the new race seat this weekend in time for the ZCD summer matsuri amatuer day next friday in taupo!

  22. Yeah I went to Howats. Was reasonably priced - got him to set up a new CWP and LSD centre, fitted new bearings etc. Something wasn't quite right first time around so he put it right at his cost with no dramas. Would recommend.

  32. They see me rollin - they hatin... Tidied up the old 618 gas tank After Getting into my rust repair arch panels form a genuine rx2 coupe - spot weld eradication Now for the money shot.... I sent my Simmons FR17 x7 rears to Heads Racing and they re lipped them to 8.5" using 3.5" outlets. Let's just say that I am more than happy with the outcome Test fit...no diff of tyres I'm loving it New computer and loom for the injection And here is a sample of my buffing exploits You like that??? I have done the sill, front windscreen and rear windscreen chrome now. This should pop against the patina. I cleaned up and rust killed the s3 rx2 cross member. Sold my rx3 cross member set up for the original unit so I can have the motor set back a bit. I also took a punt on some Honda adjusties and it appears that the rears will slot in once I get new bushes. So that's about it for now. Ordering my last few seals and the engine is getting built the weekend of RE Union in Taupo mid Feb. To say that I'm pumped is an understatement.

  37. A bit of love has been given to the wagon lately.Ordered a carb kit and 1969 corona clutch cylinder and new brakes and hubs off OS member MATTTT, cheers mate.Ripped apart the carby and installed new pieces, now runs alot smoother but the tappets where noisy so off came the cover and went to check all the clearances, all were near fine except one being an easy 3mm out.re adjusted it and now she purrs.fitted the clutch cylinder from the states, fitted perfectly and engages the clutch which meant ROAD TEST!!! Started her up and eased down the drive, off down the street and around the corner ,got her into 3rd singing her tits off then having to down shift to slow as it doesn't have brakes as of yet, tried the handbrake and it works on one side just.Gearbox was fine for age and the car handled like a whale, shocks to add to the list of parts.Parked it back in the garage after 2mins of driving and easy 2 liters of gas used but worth it.10mins later cops roll past looking in,so some old lady must not of been impressed with the 4m barking loudly and a one wheeler donut. Unsure if this is the original box off the 2m but if it is a w40 it has a side shifter? can anyone confirm this Also would the mechanical fuel pump be a main cause in crap fuel economy as 1 litre of gas in 5mins worth of idling seems bad dicuss here....//oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/51148-toymotas-1969-ms53-crown-wags-discussion/

  38. rust proofed and cleaned.. Masked.. Key coat.. my mate who's a prof painter did the initial then got me to do the rest. I ended up getting a white epoxy with the veiw to leaving it till I'm ready to do the rest of the car.. So my sister had decided that since I have a bench seat that they want to use this as a wedding car for the bridesmaids, my mate bought his buffing gear round to show me how good the paint would come up with a proper buff.. I was mildly impressed.. He's gonna give the primer a buff too to bring it up as its a medium sheen at this point but he reckons he can get it a bit more glossy.. stoked with how good it looks..

  39. LEGALITY! Today I booked the z in for a vin at Nostalgia Motors in Hamilton expecting to come back and find two or three non-compliances (not that I could find any, but they can be super picky) I got a call at half past three saying she's all good to go and she "flew through" the vin! I buzzed her over to VINZ to get rego and plates confirmed and we're legit. $140 odd for a year's rego sounds alright to me. Looking at carjam, the last time she had rego was August 1990! Obligatory sticker photo: That's 8 months from buy to fly. Only two months over schedule but the critical deadline was the Kumeu show so no problemo. Special thanks to OS'ers Cressy (Nick), Evan (Evan), 64valiant (Greg) and Miniman76 (Hayden) for their input. Pumped!

  40. DISC TWO. BONUS MATERIAL MATER AND THE GHOST LIGHT. Will, His Wife, Their Motorbikes and The Coupe. OR How I nearly would have bought a Coupe. Possibly. It's all about timing. My mate Will. He's 4 days younger than me and we grew up next door to each other in London. His Dad was from Pongaroa so he has dual nationality and has lived in NZ and Australia. For 10 years he was living in Wollongong, not far from Sydney. One day in 2011 this car came up for sale nearby at a very good price. Will and I have worked on cars together for years, he knows his way round old cars. All he would have to do was go and give it a good look over and if it was ok I could send him the money and he could have arranged shipping. Trouble was, he and his wife had decided to ride their motorbikes back to England, had left 3 weeks before and were somewhere up Malaysia. No use to me at all. The moral of this story is don't trust your mates, especially ones with a wander lust. That's it, I'm really done for the moment.

  41. Right, got my hands on my good camera, less my good lens..... bastard. Ah well, these will have to suffice. The plates that are on it some how appeared on there, will be sure to make sure they don't sneak back on there!! I will be getting the plate P AE86 put on it, should be here within a couple of weeks. Here we have all of the interior bits so far that I have acquired. I lastly need a gearbox surround piece. I have eyed up on on Yahoo! so should be able to pick that one up. So newly installed are -New center console lid -New Alpine head unit -Accessory surround unit, with new ash tray too. Though I will probably end up trying to find a black one -Instrument surround unit -New gear knob. Can't remember the brand. It feels so bliss to change gears! The two red wires are going to go to the fog light switch that I will have to find (Should be able to go down to the wreckers and pluck anyone from an 80 series toyota) fa And lastly I edited this image a bit, looks prettier All in all very happy with how it is looking. Going to see Mr. Cert man tomorrow and get it all booked in.

  42. Back on the hunt again ! I emailed loads of Importers but almost all of them were vague about pricing, time scales and duties I would be liable for once it landed here. One firm gave me a complete break down of costs at both ends and were recommended by someone I knew so they got the job. Once everyone had got in touch it was all systems go ! They gave the car a tidy-up. A nice man arrived at CCN with a transporter. Vid-Yo ! He then drove to the sea side and put it on this. Then started it's 8 week voyage to the UK. However sad it may sound I tracked it all the way back and checked for webcams on the way. I missed it through the Suez Canal and past Gibraltar but caught a look in Calais. ( that's in France...). Eventually it landed, went through customs and was on a Transporter to my house. This is the first look I got at my Hako (or any Hako actually). Very excited. I backed it out of the transporter and looked at it in the pissing rain. They are so much better looking in the flesh, lots of subtle styling I'd never noticed in pictures and wider than they appear. I was well pleased. Gave the driver a cuppa and some of Carols baking, talked about cars for a bit and then he pissed off. That was it then, happy bunny. Sent some pics to David and the boss of CCNagoya put them on his blog. It was the first car they had sold abroad and I think they were even more excited than me. http://www.nccmeeting.blogspot.jp/2012/04/blog-post_29.html Roughly translated..... It's all great, Hako got to the UK, everyone's happy. etc... Next time.... More pics and drivel.

  44. I have just gotten the car back from the panel beaters, and the team at Friend & Wistrand (Palmerston North) have done a fantastic job overall. Colour matching wasn't necessary as the car uses the original colours. You wouldn't know where the areas that they touched up so very pleased with the results. Not the greatest of photos, but here are the photos that Steven (Person in charge of my car) sent through to me, feel free to have a look I decided it would be nice to take a photo of the ol' girl on top of a hill in one of my parents paddocks, now i've lost the panda in the foliage.

  45. Howdy Pard'ner A few more bits and pieces of progress: Powder Coated goodness. It's a nice feeling looking underneath and not thinking damn son, you nasty. Also replaced the front wheel bearings because yuck Had the front rotors skimmed. Looked like the pads have worn down at some point, I wonder what song they would play on an old record player. Also found an old WOF in the sun visor. Might be good proof for the plates? And the ones I know you're probably here for... All complete and ready for re-reg just waiting to hear from LTSA about the plates. Hasta la Vista, BABY Hoping to be ready to potentially take her to Nats if time off is approved
