  1. So I've been floating around these pages for a while now, Had a build thread on here of my 12a 323 wagon. Moved down to Wanaka, left the 323 in my home town of Ohakune. Long story short, the newly built 12a had a knocking rotor bearing so kinda lost all motivation with that old girl. While all this was going on i herd about a Mazda 1200 ute that was up for grabs in Queenstown. So went to check it out, turns out it came up from Stuart Island where an old fella had sitting in one of his sheds on the farm for many years, sold the farm and whatever was in the sheds came with the farm. I had to have it! So i cut a deal with the new owner of the farm and took it straight to work got it running better, cleaned out about 3 tons of dirt that was everywhere! Figured i was just going to get it going, wham a new wof on it and just use it. But time came to put on a new wof and rego had lapsed… Shit. Old owner said it was on hold but its not, Should have checked but was far too excited about this wee girl! Seeing as i need to revin the old girl now i figured id go the whole hog and go balls out full resto. Slow going but any who heres what we are all here for, Pic's!! Some of the dirt! Hard to tell but has had new floor sections put in at some stage. 323 engine and 5 speed, Will be ditching this in place of standard 1200 ASAP!! Stuart Island spec engine mounts NOS Combo switch $$$$ NOS Pillar vents Set of NOS hub caps, Not 100% on what they are off but they are badass!! 5. I was rummaging around dads shed and found some old nixie tubes he had found when he was my age. I thought i'd like to make a clock so found a kit, got side tracked and ordered more nixi stuff. The kit arrived just before Christmas so I have been working on it when I'm motivated enough. When I was trying to find info on the hitachi nixies of dads (still can't) I found this site http://www.gstube.com/ and they had a interesting looking display so I ordered it, It arrived today finally. circuit board and stuff Dads tiny hitachi nixies The russian display and dekatraon

  7. Wow. Crikey. Its been a while aint it. July was the last post. A few things have been done since then so I better get typing. First off. Come February we will have owned the land for two years and it will be 14 months since we moved out to it. Its settled in nicely and we are getting a good feel for the seasons and all the little things that happen out here when they change. Starting to get to know the locals quite well and have had lots of work coming into the workshop from just word of mouth which is awesome. Hannah is working a summer season job down at the beach front and when thats over we will be doing a flyer drop around the valley and surrounding areas to put out to people that they can get many sorts of engineering/repairs/bike repairs/advice on cats/great coffee from us* *my coffee aint that great.. In the start of spring I spent a morning going about the land taking photos. I tried to compose them as close as I could to the original photos we took as we cleared the land. Some are ever so slightly off. This was because things have changed so much that even I struggled to work out where the original photos were taken! I'm pretty happy with the resulting before and after collection so I'll put them right here. I have tried to list them from the drive way entrance and then heading down the drive to the north end of the property. The driveway entrance.. heading up the drive.. The highest point of the driveway.. I like this one.. looking down the driveway. Such a difference. Next up- one of the 5 old caravans that got taken away. This one was surrounded by lots of junk/scrap steel etc. Now just trees and some sweet old gates we saved. The mountain bike track I started heads in just around there. These next ones are looking out from about where the cabin veranda is.. Looking back towards where the cabin is now. Thats my brother duncan trying to locate where the Gravely mowers might be. We found them a few months later. and now.. Hannah wondering WTF... This next one is from the first night we stayed over to check the land out. We had pushed the driveway gorse down by throwing the van into 4wd and just driving over the top. Here down at the north end I was just laying back in the grass chilling and imagining what the area could be like. There is now a bit more parking area.. The following morning of the first night Hannah chilling in the morning sun with a coffee. We didnt really know what this area was going to be like in two years time.. This is it. you can see we kept the little Kanuka to the left. Its thriving now! The main yard was not much of a yard back then.. This is better !... Our first morning.. two years later.. I'm really glad I took so many photos before we cleared it all. Its great to look back at. Moving on to recent times. Not long before xmas this happened.. https://youtu.be/uaAHS96LGP4 We had been wanting rid of that 70 plus year old bugger for ages and its so good to see it gone. Shane (sideways sickness) and Greg (64Valiant) came round and got to see some of it heading to earth. Then we had a nice BBQ. Big thanks goes out to Shep for chopping it down. No way would I be doing that job. For starters I dont have chainsaw with a metre long bar! Nor the skill or experience. It was great fun just helping out and watching. We have many more big pine trees to come down over the next couple of years but this one was the one I wanted gone now. The view afterwards is heaps better!!!. Plus we now have a sweet as 8 metre high trunk to build a cool viewing platform on one day Before.. After.. Then for the end of the year we thought we had better crack on and finish the bathroom before my brother came over to stay. We needed the shower going for him so we got stuck in and finished it just before xmas eve. It still has some little finshing touches like light switches, extra lights, better prettier shower head, hand rail up the steps etc but its pretty much done. It works really well however I reckon we'll get a new califont for winter as the old Palomar is a bit small on heating capacity. We'll see. The compost toilet is working really well and still doesn't smell. Ive not yet even wired in the fan. Happy with that. Its taking about 3-4 months to fill a bin. Will put in a third bin soon and then start a secondary outside composting area away up under the eucalyptes just to be safe. The bathroom lights and shower pump are running off the cabin solar panel setup too and we have run wires to add a couple of outside lights to light up the pathway from the cabin to the bathroom. I just have to make some lights yet. Anyway.. some photos of the new bathroom ... We moved all the various piles of gorse and Kanuka into one place to chop too. Here you can get an idea of the amount of Gorse we cleared.. We have also started a vege garden and although a bit late its going well. Its certainly not a massive affair like our neighbours but we'll learn and it'll get bigger/better. The strawberries all going mental and its great to have 4 or 5 fresh strawberries on the cereal in the morning. Our fruit orchard trees are growing well and seem pretty happy. We'll plant heaps more this winter. The olive tree seems happy as so we'll plant more of them along the driveway. Finally Hannah spotted an old picnic table offered for free down at someones holiday home so we grabbed that. I told the owner we had been after one for ages so he was stoked it was going to be used. It looks the part and is an ideal little spot to chill. Thats it for now. I hope you enjoyed it. Im pretty damn happy with it all and now the rush is sort of over (for a bit) we have both finally been enjoying more of a summer recently of just swimming and cycling. Next big plan is the mezzanine floor in the workshop but that will be a winter thing. Then more cabins! Oh and bike tracks. Oh and spa pool. Damn...

  10. Here is a before and after shot of the "banana" rx2 s3 cross member. These are desirable due to the fact they are for front mounted 12a engines. I'm running an old school 13b with a 12a front cover. After a wire wheel and rust etch. I will be painting it black along with the steering components soon. And a good mate gave me this K&N Carbon fibre intake to whack onto the quad throttle body intake we are working on. Think these are used on sprint cars.

  17. They see me rollin - they hatin... Tidied up the old 618 gas tank After Getting into my rust repair arch panels form a genuine rx2 coupe - spot weld eradication Now for the money shot.... I sent my Simmons FR17 x7 rears to Heads Racing and they re lipped them to 8.5" using 3.5" outlets. Let's just say that I am more than happy with the outcome Test fit...no diff of tyres I'm loving it New computer and loom for the injection And here is a sample of my buffing exploits You like that??? I have done the sill, front windscreen and rear windscreen chrome now. This should pop against the patina. I cleaned up and rust killed the s3 rx2 cross member. Sold my rx3 cross member set up for the original unit so I can have the motor set back a bit. I also took a punt on some Honda adjusties and it appears that the rears will slot in once I get new bushes. So that's about it for now. Ordering my last few seals and the engine is getting built the weekend of RE Union in Taupo mid Feb. To say that I'm pumped is an understatement.

  18. So I've been looking for a hako for about 4 years now, keeping an eye on the prices and how quickly they seem to be appreciating in price as the world notices them (thanks RM Sotheby's) and with some hard saving I've been able to finally make a purchase. The car is a 1971 2000GT with L20 engine and 5 speed. Unknown ks, bit of rust around the place (wouldn't be one without it) but overall a fairly solid start. I purchased this from Restored.jp who some may be familiar with, they make aftermarket FRP and carbon parts for old cars like that Hako. This was the owners personal car.. whether that's good or not is yet to be known but it's a nice story anyway. I'd be interested to have contact with other owners of Hakos in NZ as it would be handy for parts and general networking. I'll be working on this in stages (as I'm now broke) to get this up to road legal spec.. More to come but I've already figured a couple things I need to do before it's even here ! I understand there are several in NZ already, any coupes or road legal ones? Discuss: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/49704-mlracings-hakosuka/

  29. Back wheel is fine - looks like the same fitment we had. I recommend this site for choosing tire sizing - try to aim for the outer diameter of the tire to be the same as stock. We used some $90 165/60/R14s and they were pretty marginal as to whether we needed flares or not - if you pump up the suspension and find a nice wof guy you should be fine. Will look sick if you can get it fitting right!

  41. rust proofed and cleaned.. Masked.. Key coat.. my mate who's a prof painter did the initial then got me to do the rest. I ended up getting a white epoxy with the veiw to leaving it till I'm ready to do the rest of the car.. So my sister had decided that since I have a bench seat that they want to use this as a wedding car for the bridesmaids, my mate bought his buffing gear round to show me how good the paint would come up with a proper buff.. I was mildly impressed.. He's gonna give the primer a buff too to bring it up as its a medium sheen at this point but he reckons he can get it a bit more glossy.. stoked with how good it looks..

  42. Have done a bit of work on the 120 lately. Had a spare cross rod that I sent away to SAS suspension, they have repaired 2 joints and provided new idler arm bushes. $307.90 total.Quick service! 3 days. Will aim on getting that in asap as current joints are completely flogged, car drives where it wants. 5 speed has done about 2800km's - seems to be reliable as it is defiantly proved its benefit! 3000rpm as apposed to about 3800. On a trip can manage 6.8L to 100km. Had to make some little spacers to drop the box down, used the 4 speed bracket and the box hit the floor. Spacers working sweet - hope they pass wof with no worries though. Have made a side skirt too. 50mm rubber with an aluminium piece running the length. Car looks lower which was the intention. Chin spoiler arrived last week, fitted today. Will have to get the center join plastic welded together. While on the Datsun North island nats, picked up an old msd 5 unit for $20. Fitted it and seems to work, runs smoother and better on cold starts. Little more torque down bottom. Dellortos - Fitted the dellortos ive had sitting for a while on the car. Had to drill and tap a new tread as have the newer style head (i believe) Got it running average. seemed to pull great 3-6.5 rpm but would splutter 1000-2800 rpm, idle jet too large?? Anyway had to swap back to single carb as the gaskets let go, filling the barrell with fuel. Will have to get them re built. Picked up an after school job at Autopaint Wairarapa, so will look at doing a jdm flag bonnet soon with a spear I have. BMW lip spoiler on the way soon too. Aiming to have the car looking mint for Four and Rotas Manfield 2016 Has done 13,500km in the last 8 months. Defiantly a daily!

  43. Sorry if I’m straying slightly off topic but one of my passions is saving old tools. My 1930’s record No.4 vice (it was my granddad's) was not handling the latest project well, I needed something bigger. Scored a very rusty but gorgeous 60 plus? Year old 6” American Wilton for $55. You need two hands and a strong back to lift this old beauty, it’s got almost as much cast iron in it as Rigamortice's short-block! 24 hours in the Phosphoric pickle bath…… Some etch primer…….. Two coats of epoxy enamel, some Moly grease and a little TLC……… Not only have I the vice from hell this piece of history has gone from the scrap pile to having a life expectancy that will outlive most of us reading this thread.

  44. Got my rims back.. might have to roll my gaurds somewhat.. tried a couple of different centers, xp falcon on the right vs xb caps on letf, and a standard zephyr cap.. Made a fuel line..

  45. These are the rims I scored from the Mcleans island swap meet. Got the them for cheaper than you can buy one new, and these are brand new off a 2013 Qashqai. In trying them on, as per usual with fwd rims, the massive positive offset kept them way inside the guards by about 60mm and 70mm fr and r.. I was gonna just run some spacers but for the price it was cheaper and safer just to get the centers reversed (hundy per rim) got them back for a test fit with zero offset.. think this is the look I'll try for eventually (ford GT caps) and then on the car, think I'll have to add a bit of low to the equation and also 10mm negative offset as theres still 20mm of gap at the back. I can always roll the fronts if I get some rub.. apparently the zephyr responds well to a couple of coils being removed, or so the gurus say anyway..
