  2. I just had an idea... Why don't they use RHD cars then just flip the image? Sounds kind of a like a stupid idea but it could work... So long as there's no text in the frames that gets reversed haha /possiblelingpost

  3. fixed that, ready for crashing into mustangs starting boggling on how to do the upper 4 link mounts on the diff, copied some of sheepers trick that I saw he used on richies starlet diff to help with the locating the diff mounts but wont work completely as you can see the original fox body setup has a bushing pressed into a thingie on the diff and im changing to a rod end setup. still i can use it to help define the angle and distance apart. also was very lucky - I though I was going to have to pull the whole diff apart at this point because the diff breather location appeared to be right where the mount was going to have to go. but on further investigation the diff head is offset a little and it is just going to clear so that is a win. will still have to pull the thing apart to swap the center and check axle lengths to ensure they will engage in the e-locker centre properly (a wee birdie tells me it may be a little known toyota secret that the e-locker diffs have different length axles to the LSD axles for the locking collar to engage on) but also this diff has been shortened so who knows what might be hiding inside. also will be getting a disc brake conversion but that is also a later job at this point.

  4. Not sure if anyone will be interested but on the off chance... I've had this car for about 15 years now, bought it off the original owner for $500 with the intention of flicking it on to some backpacker but ended up kinda liking it and not wanting to part with it. I used it on and off for the entire time I've owned it but with some pretty big gaps between drives sometimes. The longest it went without the battery in it was nearly two years and it always fired up pretty quickly when I got it out but the long periods of inactivity were starting to take their toll. Oil leaks, surface rust, general deterioration etc, were all starting to ruin the old girl. Then I pranged it into the back of someone on the motorway... Initially all I was going to do was repair the damage and touch up the nose cone and bonnet but one thing led to another and I ended up pulling all the chrome, windows, bumpers etc and getting the whole thing re sprayed... Feel free to take the piss at anytime. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/50400-gozzas-68-mk1-trumpet/?p=1598936

  6. Spent the next few days trying to remember where all the bits went. I'd bought a few bits such as all the little plastic trim clips and gaskets for the tail lights etc off chriswitor.co.uk and even got some new hubcaps with the little emblems off ebay Made the reassembly much easier having all the right bits available. Ended up looking pretty smart

  7. Holy shit. HUGE thank you to Christian, Andrew and Sam at OCD in Penrose. They've done wonders with shitty 29-year-old paint that's lived in grimy Tokio smog all its life and has had numerous touchups. Begone, scuff marks from previous Japanese owner's crummy car cover! Now I'm really afraid to drive it anywhere in case the shiny disappears, hahaha. Discuss: http://oldschool.co....1-sc-chit-chat/

  8. Thanks for all the awesome comments guys! The place that we are staying at tonight in Rakaia has internet access so i can catch up on a few things. The ride is going extremely well so far and i am very pleased with how the bike is going, no problems yet and i think we have done a bit over 100km now. We went out to Erewhon station yesterday and had a good tour around which was cool. Tomorrow is the big day with a bit over 80km to do so i am looking foward to that. I have managed to master a few tricks now like no hands riding, peddle dismounts, coasting down a hill with legs over the bars and I am getting the hang of balancing on the thing stationary. Oh yes the newspaper article, The lies!!! its amazing what these reporters seem to be able to pull out of thin air haha although he did get most of the things i told him right. DIRTY6 yes that pic is of one of the 6 other penny farthing riders on the tour, there are also about 16 vintage safety bicycle aswell. Anyway thats my internet just about up, I will put some pics up of the ride next week when i get home.

  11. So the R154 is away getting a freshen up so the engine is back out. Got my welder set up on gas to this v weekend will be engine mount plates and finishing off the driver side header. Will have more of a picture update in a few days. Once gearbox is back it's ready for final fitment.

  13. really? my arse dyno must need re calibrating

  14. It makes perfect sense really, as even though the same chassis may have had different engine options, the supporting components can also differ in strength. Sure you can also swap the driveshaft from the higher spec model if it fits, however it's a blanket rule as trying to determine if a driveshaft is actually up to the spec of the engine output is very hard to do. It's better to be safe than sorry. Case in point, Camel pretzeled a driveshaft in his 1JZ powered Crown a few years back. Dunno if he had hoops, or even a cert at the time, but the shaft didn't take it.

  15. Progress has been a little slow over the last couple of weeks but things are still happening, most importantly I got these My new steering arms, all CNC machined and up to LVVTA spec so that is pretty exciting, I will slap some paint on them then get them in the car as soon as possible, this also means that I can finish off the other small jobs and finally get the car down off the axle stands. I also got a new speedo cable made up (no pictures of that though) by Parrotts in Chch , it is kind of long as the rx7 gearbox has the speedo drive on the passenger side so I have had to run the cable around the front of the motor and back down to meet it but once the radiator is in you won't see it anyway. And I also finished the hoses for the oil cooler and got it all bolted in for the last time, I have run the hoses through a hole next to the radiator and down through the front end sheetmetal, keeps it all hidden away nicely, the only thing I might add is some hose separator clamps to keep the hoses in position although they can't really go anywhere so maybe not necessary. And finally I was able to put the grill and bumper back on, I am pretty happy with how this has turned out, you can't really even notice the oil cooler behind the grill. So the next job is to reinforce the chassis rail where I have attached the motor mount crossmember, I have made up some crush tubes and an additional plate to go on the top of the chassis rail, just need to get it all welded into place now.

  16. Been making some slow but steady progress... All of the engine sensors are tested and working fine now, E-throttle is great! I had a bunch of problems trying to get it calibrated, but narrowed it down to a wiring fault and got that resolved. Still working on things like getting the cold start a bit nicer, getting the idle speed sorted and so on. But moving in the right direction. I've started calibrating the knock sensor. Since the knock sensor is closer to one cylinder than the others, that cylinder will give a "louder" signal. So in the ECU software you need to amplify the signal of the far cylinders so they all read evenly. I used the E-throttle idle control to set the idle at a hearty 4000rpm haha. Then looked at the difference in knock sensor levels between cylinders. This motor has the knock sensor located on cylinder number 3, because that's usually the one that will blow up first as it runs the hottest. So cyl number 3 naturally gave the strongest signal and then the others tapered off. With the car running, and looking at the logs I got the signal "about right". Then started a datalog of the motor being held at 4000rpm for a minute or so. To fine tune it from here I pulled the data out into a CSV file and then averaged the results and calculated what the new gain levels for each cylinder will need to be to make them super even. The knock sensor naturally records engine vibration under all circumstances, it can tell when knock happens because knock is a much stronger vibration through the block. So you need to drive the car while it's not knocking and record the signal levels at various rpms to tell the ECU that this is the normal vibration level. Then if it's something like 20% higher than that, it registers it as knock and pulls ignition timing. If it consistently starts knocking on one cylinder first, then I can add an ignition trim to that cylinder to permenantly pull a little bit of timing out as a safety margin. I've taken the car for a bit of a tootle up the road and back, but hesitant to drive it too far without an air filter. Sooooooo my airbox thingy is most of the way there, I just need to figure out how to mount it and what to mount it to. Then one day finish making the other half, haha. will be interesting to see if there's any tangible improvements or whether there's no loss in reverting to a simpler design. But I'm well on track towards making it to the OS drags, and maybe some Hampton trackdays prior to that.

  17. Hey Oldschool! I'm Sam, I've been browsing the forums for awhile now and I've finally got around to starting a thread for my old boat. This is Leila, my '74 Camaro. She's running a small block 350, Hooker headers, Edelbrock intake manifold, Holley carby and Mallory electronic ignition. Idles like theres some sort of cam in there but I don't know for sure, the rest of the running gear is stock apart from the air shockies in the rear. I bought her off trademe 7/8 months ago, she'd been sitting in an old fellas shed as he didn't have the time to drive it. I drove Leila for a couple of months before the brakes packed up and she sat on my folks lawn for a couple of months while I mucked around with my VL and saved some cash for new brakes. Pictured is soon after I bought it home, since then I've changed the wheels as the Cheviots looked too much like modgies to me, and rebuilt all the brake system. She's now wof'd and reg'd and I've been putting a few miles on it. The mrs and I took it to Hanmer last weekend and its also a pretty sweet daily driver. Sure beats sitting in traffic my commodore! Plans for the next couple of months are replacing the suspension bushes, rebuilding the steering, widening or replacing the rear wheels and fabricating a new exhaust system. Please bear with me while I figure out how to create a discussion thread and figure the rest of this forum business out! 19. Cheers mate, thanks and respect for the honest reply. I have a feeling we'll bang heads from time to time on this MB but will maintain a mutual respect. The big question has to be; when are you going to start a thread on your latest build?
    2 points
  20. Back at the start of the year I chucked a set of minilites on on it just to be original. Got quite a bit of shit from some people for my lack of taste, lack of originality, and lack of giving a fuck, but didn't care cause it was what I wanted.... I reckon it looks ok so whatever. Even tried a couple of bricks in the boot to see what it looked like a little lower...

  21. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/50377-camel-and-liambs-51-chevy-gasser-discussion/ So Ky, Spencer and Myself road tripped from Brisbane down to Melbourne for Chopped 15' and decided to go a week earlier to help Camel and Liam with their build to try and get it ready to maybe enter the dirt drags, which gave us 4 days to do a great deal of work I took some snaps of it so will post them to this thread. Diddy hard at work doing something under there Camel mounting the master cylinder V8! Both the alternator and bracket needed modifying to fit between the rails mounting the front shackles Mounting the windows

  26. Very keen on your VK mate. The rainbow warrior shoot specifically needs a new (in '85) Commodore. Could you PM me some pictures? I will pass them on to the production team and if they require your car I will let you know. On standard wheel please. Also let greentc know we would like some pictures of his car for the same reason too. Cheers!

  30. Finished building rear suspension tower/coil over mount/cage backstay mount thing also additional cage bar footplates that tie into the upper 4 link mounts Version 3 seat mounts to banger specication had a tidy up finally, found I had created mount makita funny thing is thats not even half of it, that much again was in the shop vac and half as much in my lungs probably so where it sits now, gangster mode engaged will call a guy about the cage tomorrow, hoping I can get someone local to do it who has done a drag car one before and has the 1 5/8 dies. worst case I will get the die and do it myself but would rather just pay money and have it done at this point time is critical. jobs for the coming week put mounts onto hilux diff replace this cheese rusted bit I cut off

  31. Well I think i can call this project finished and I will report if its been successful after the ride haha. Both of the bikes are done, I had a big assembly day last Sunday and I have ridden them around the block a couple of times now and they both go really well. I haven't got any pictures of them both together yet but i just took a few of my bike so here's a big pic dump of it all finished. Tonight's job is to wrap it all up ready for its trip down to chch in the plane with me tomorrow night. The ride that i'm doing starts in Arundel at 11pm Tuesday. The ride ends at Akaora on Friday after about 180km of riding. Im doing the chch swapmeet on saturday as well which should be a pretty good event.

  35. So I figured i should probably start a thread for this to justify my being on this forum. I can't really call it a project as it is currently in storage in Christchurch while I'm living in Aus so not much is being done to it but I'm currently stockpiling a few things so i can get it to a point I'm happy with once I'm back in NZ. At the moment it has the stock A12 motor but i am running 40m dellortos. There has been a few tricky things due to the fact it's left hand drive. Dellotos are almost sitting flush against the strut tower so no fancy trumpets for me. Also the Steering box is in the way for normal 1200 extractors so these had to be a bit mangled to make them fit. New extractors are on my list to get made when I'm back in the country. The plan so far is to keep it A-Series so long term I will be building a worked a A15. It is lowered but done very rough, leaf spring removed from rear with 3" blocks. Shortened shocks at the front with cut springs (Yes i know slap on the hand for being a bogan) I have new front shocks to put in that have been done properly and will actually the car some suspension travel. And i plan on getting leafs re-set in the rear as well. Feel free to give your input and ideas. Sorry the only photo's i have are recent ones from Nats etc of the outside, wish i still had photo's of the original build but the few that were taken I have no idea where they are. 36. Thanks Pete, yeah it feels like I am finally getting there. It would be good to take a few more days off and nail all the little jobs but I have no leave left so any time off would have to be unpaid which isn't so cool.

I think it should be enough to cruise around in and at nearly 14,000rpm to find limtier it should sound pretty cool. a Also Had a party and thought it should get a load test, It passed.

  41. Some more progress from the weekend, I needed to do some tests on the plastic steering arms to make sure they are right before I get them machined. First up I bolted the arms in place Then I made these I bought some cheap laser pointers and mounted them to a bit of SHS, it is hard to see in the photo but one of the clamp plates holding the laser is bolted so I can adjust it and get the laser pointing parallel to the mounting face. I only made 2 of them so I have to do each side of the car separately, so one gets bolted to the rear hub and the other to the front, then I put a board out the front of the car to shine the lasers onto then I can just measure the distance between them, well that's the theory anyway. So first I set the alignment by making sure the distance between the dots was the same at the front hub and on the board which was about 3m in front of the car. Next I pulled the springs out of the front suspension and measured the distance between the dots at ride height, max compression, and max droop. Then with a bit of trigonometry I can work out what the angle change is, seems to work ok, in that last photo you can see the marks I made at the 3 measured suspension heights. the arms are pretty good but I am getting toe out as the suspension changes and I think it would be better if it was going to be going the other way (toe in) so I have some fine tuning to do. I ran out of time yesterday to get it finished so will hit it again after work today. I also had this turn up last week After leaving my $20 cage in the car for the last month or so I decided that I would put one in but seeing as it is a bit of work to do figured that I should start with one that was up to spec. Anyway it is a fair way down the priority list at the moment but I will get to it eventually.
