  1. Passed cert today! Needs more low, bigger turbo, decent ecu, paint etc and then I'll be happy. Cert is a big milestone though

  2. Holy shit. HUGE thank you to Christian, Andrew and Sam at OCD in Penrose. They've done wonders with shitty 29-year-old paint that's lived in grimy Tokio smog all its life and has had numerous touchups. Begone, scuff marks from previous Japanese owner's crummy car cover! Now I'm really afraid to drive it anywhere in case the shiny disappears, hahaha. Discuss: http://oldschool.co....1-sc-chit-chat/

  5. Progress has been a little slow over the last couple of weeks but things are still happening, most importantly I got these My new steering arms, all CNC machined and up to LVVTA spec so that is pretty exciting, I will slap some paint on them then get them in the car as soon as possible, this also means that I can finish off the other small jobs and finally get the car down off the axle stands. I also got a new speedo cable made up (no pictures of that though) by Parrotts in Chch , it is kind of long as the rx7 gearbox has the speedo drive on the passenger side so I have had to run the cable around the front of the motor and back down to meet it but once the radiator is in you won't see it anyway. And I also finished the hoses for the oil cooler and got it all bolted in for the last time, I have run the hoses through a hole next to the radiator and down through the front end sheetmetal, keeps it all hidden away nicely, the only thing I might add is some hose separator clamps to keep the hoses in position although they can't really go anywhere so maybe not necessary. And finally I was able to put the grill and bumper back on, I am pretty happy with how this has turned out, you can't really even notice the oil cooler behind the grill. So the next job is to reinforce the chassis rail where I have attached the motor mount crossmember, I have made up some crush tubes and an additional plate to go on the top of the chassis rail, just need to get it all welded into place now.

  9. Could empty tank and remove . Then put gas cap back on and remove fuel tap and jam a air gun up the outlet and attempt to pop the dent with compressed air . I have also heard of someone filling the tank with water and then freezing it . The water expanding when freezing pops the dent out . And also depending on your seams it may blow them out too and you will have bigger issues so unsure on that one .

  13. No they are all separately insured by the film company for an agreed value when they are on set, so no worries I've never heard of anyone using a car for film work requiring a cof, because the cars are being used for film work, on what is considered a closed road (providing they have a permit) , they don't really need wof or reg either, although its nice to have some.

  14. The car guy for Westside Season 2 emailed me last week wanting my car the next day for a few hours to be in the background. I'm away from Auckland for another couple of weeks but he seemed keen to use it when I got back. Throw that on the list if you like? '74 Austin 1300.

  17. Hey guys, Since we had such a fantastic time here last time we went, and it is certainly entertaining watching all the bearded fellows eat ribs, we are going back to 1841 BAR & Restaurant in Johnsonville. They have a daily deal on Thursdays with $20 for any main and $12 jugs MENU I have booked a table for 15 at 7pm. So shall we meet in the carpark (Southern end of the Countdown carpark) at 6.45 for some vehicular admiration before heading in? -MAP- Discuss Here

  19. A recent stuff up of mine has resulted with the below damage Looks slightly worse in photos, but still bloody gutted as it was mint beforehand! I'm hoping this could be rectified somewhat without the need for a respray, but if not I'll go that route. What are my chances? Has anyone had experience with this and would you recommend anyone in particular in Auckland? Cheers, Berj

  21. yes, before that info sheet there was no mention of an actual figure, it was worded as 'significant increase in power' so i guess it came down to judgement of what was 'significant' even now its a bit of a guess as to how much power something has got if its been modified. ie the supra i used ^ as an example, the 1uz that was put in was stock, complete with shitty log manifolds. if it had headers and an aftermarket ecu, then i would say it would need loops, as it would probably go over the 50% threshold. Dyno sheets are a waste of time as far as proving a power increase or lack of, as they are usually supplied by someone who doesnt want to fit loops. i had a guy once with a big dollar GTR with a T51R on it, that gave me a dyno sheet saying it only had 190kw, hah

  26. Unpacked the box it arrived in today, and this was everything laid out. Cleaned everything up slightly, and re-greased/replaced the bearings. Slapped it back together. Need some new tyres and tubes, a seat, some grips, and a new chain.

  27. I find it hard to give up my toys. And one of the cool things about Oldschool is seeing everyone elses' build threads makes me feel like an inadequate white collar wanker. I bought a welder. I got started with the grinder on one of the bits of rust and made my first template the other day. Felt good. Now I need to find a cheapo folder and some panel steel.

  31. Stereo working well now, ready for sound off in November. Hoping to beat my 140.4DB Panel with fuses for motorised bits and indicators for alternators. It's turbo time. Spare one on car lacks power and is not right so ripped it out again. Never touched a turbo before but thought what the hell I'll give it a go. Been reading a few blogs where the VJ1 and VJ20 can fit together. Got myself a VJ20 today so now the fun begins.

  33. Haven't had much luck with this car! I was on the way home from a Funeral in Putaruru yesterday and the wastegate pipe of my exhaust manifold cracked through and blew off on the Turangi side of the desert road. Somehow I managed to make it 180km without being pulled up by a cop, despite the car being horrendously loud as the exhaust manifold had a hole in it before the turbo! This also meant that I had next to no power, too. Foot to the floor in third going up hills and losing speed is amusing.

  36. looks good to me. use a 100x50 washer on the top side of the floor, 4x 10mm bolts to attach to the floor, spring washers or nylocs on all fasteners, and take a photo before you put the carpet back in for your cert dude. pro tip- tack the bolt heads to the washers on top of the floor and then its much easier to do up the nuts by yourself

  37. Car running sweet now - see discussion thread. Just a few small leaks to sort. Got two indicator lights today for the alternators and connected it all up. Works really good so far. On the left, voltage from car battery and alternator 1. On the right, voltage for the stereo from the other alternators 2 and 3.

  40. Ok so there has been stuff happening, the rust in the front end was a bit worse than I thought so it took some time to fix but it is all sorted now, hard to see in these pics but it is all sorted So I got my 4 holes drilled for mounting the radiator and once they were done it was time to put the engine back in. It was all pretty straight forward, I did spend some time tidying up some little bits and pieces like finishing off the gearbox crossmember which needed some speed holes filled and painting. Pretty happy to have the motor back in though and it shouldn't have to come out again (I hope) So the next task is the exhaust, I bought 3 180deg bends and chopped them up to make this 2" primarys that will run to the diff with a resonator in each, then into a 2.5" pipe and a muffler at the back. There isn't a lot of clearance with the steering box but it is going to have to do. Steering box clearance and underneath and underneath again.... SO the exhaust is all but done now (I built the rest of it ages ago) and I will get some pics of the whole thing finished as soon as I get in connected up. I need to get a couple of bends before that can happen and sort out the hangers but that shouldn't take too much. I have told work that I need to take more time off in the next few weeks as I am determined to get this thing finished. Oh yeah and I heard back from LVVTA about my steering arms so they are all go now, I have a mate lined up to machine them which should happen in the next few weeks. And I will finish up with a shot of the engine bay with the carb inb place More to come soon....
