  1. I was quite a happy emotional chappy tonight because I got to sit in a little car that I've not been in for over 30 years... I popped open the door and it the 120y actually smelled like I remembered. Maybe its just a standard old Japanese car smell but it immediately brought back memories! Sitting inside it all looked so familiar. I was so happy. We had a good look all over for rust and overall its way less rusty than I was expecting. In fact for a old Datsun of this era its actually really solid! That will be having spent most of its life in good old dry Blenheim/Nelson then. The sills on both side need replacing. One chassis rail is rusty right at the end. The inner wing behind the steering box has a big hole. I'm sure there is more but overall it makes my Viva Rustwagon look.. well decidedly rusty. The floorpan has very loose old underseal coming off easily and whats under it appears good. The bonnet is good too. The badly dented wing is from when it spent two days in a paddock and the cows were rubbing against it. It'll pull out ok and yeah it wont look perfect but I think this car is a long way off from ever looking great.. The tailgate is solid but huge dents that had been poorly filled in at some point. The boot floor is solid which is amazing given the amount of trips this car saw to Rarangi beach and smelly seawater wet Labrador trips back. The headlining is pretty good too. Quite amazed. The grill is intact and front end looks straight. Both bumpers are good too. The boot seems smaller than I remembered. Maybe I may well have grown a little taller since I was ten. I have found a few bits of paper work in the car including a invoice from Murchison motors for collection of stranded car, radiator repair and water pump replacement. I also scored some KFC coupons!!!! Plus two spoons to take with me when I claim my 15 pieces of chicken for $19.95 I have a STA Isis card form filled out with the same details as found on a letter from Dunedin university. Some previous owner was into golf..although not that good at it given the score. Oh and one hacky sack. Sweet.

  3. Wow- after a bit of digging about through her old photos my mum finally found some of our old 120y wagon from back in the late 70s/early 80s. What I was after was confirmation that the car for sale on the oldschool classifieds area.... http://oldschool.co.nz/2011/forum/index.php?/topic/49659-fs-datsun-120y-wagon-nelson/ Mum phoned me this morning with good news. Yes!!! it is indeed our old car. Damn this is cool news!!! I have spoken to Dave's (avenger tiger) boss and its still up for grabs so I have said I'll take it away Mum and Dad are very excited about the prospect of getting their old car back. Mum has been talking about getting a Morris Minor Traveller like they had before the Datsun but they are too expensive. Getting their Datsun on the road for them would be awesome. Luckily it sounds like I might be able to get the old original engine back as well. Its currently in a Suzuki 4wd but the owner wants something else to power it. So this will be good if I can secure its original heart. Anyway- I'm so excited. I should be in the workshop right now welding my Viva wagon but I couldn't help but start a thread even though I don't yet have the car. I am under no illusions that it will be an easy resto. It will be rusty like Ive not seen before. But I don't mind that. Hopefully if I need any parts there should be enough bits floating about in NZ on the vibrant datsun nz forum. Another choice thing is that because mum has photos of it with the plates visible hopefully I can apply to reuse the old plates when it come to the re-vinning process. So here are some cool photos. All taken in the late 70s or early 80s. This is up the Westbank road when we used to go visit this mad old farmer/recluse fella. He would hang weird things about in trees if I remember correctly and thats what we are looking at. This is me and my brothers and sister in the boot along with Bella the smelly old Lab and Pipi the cat (who lived to be 19 years old!). I'm the little fella sitting on the back seat on the right in the white collared top. Here's the two family wagons. My Dad was very proud of his Mk4 Zodiac wag that he brought over with him from the UK. It was always giving troubles whilst the Datsun just purred through life. Dad never bought another english car again and we ended up with two more Datsuns after the 120Y. Mum and Dad did buy my first Triumph off me when I left for me 10 year OE and they loved that old car. But that's because Triumphs are bloody awesome too. Finally here is a photo of a Family reunion at Woodend. It was my Mums family and this was the mens beauty contest. The little Hillman Superminx wagon next to the 120y was my cousins and that was a cool car too. I think my cousin Helen ended up crashing it Here it sits in its current condition.. Discuss Here

  6. New lower crossmember has been fabbed from scratch, welded into place, and liberally coated with underseal/rustkill/Brunox. Parts of the front have also been tidied up with a lick of paint. The certifier visited this morning to complete his final inspection of the crossmember repair; but in typical tradesman fashion he won't be back until tomorrow to write up the actual paperwork for it The new front bumper supports also arrived courtesy of our man Mark at Manawatu Toyota. One of them will be affixed to the vehicle, and the other one goes into storage because you never know when it'll come in handy, right? Then I have to pull flnger this weekend to re-assemble the front, and the car will head back to compliance early next week... for what one hopes will be the last time. It ain't over until it's over! Dat TGP sticker. This one's in slightly better condition than the one which came off the car! Discuss: http://oldschool.co....1-sc-chit-chat/

  11. Suckle upon a picture of the car since I added the filler panel between the bumper and grille and splash guards under the headlights. Dane the good cunt hooked me up these, but only one splash guard and it was rusty. I made another one from scratch and got it fairly close. Dick job but got it together just before the rain fell and daylight ran out. Shows how bent the bumper is and still won't bring the grille into spec because it's pot metal, cracked both sides and never going to be right but fuck it.. Front much more stable and a lot less gappy now. Been too rainy since to paint in anything but black zinc. Mint16 scored me a steering bearing from eBay cause I'm too scared to online purchase. It will eradicate the 360 deg Inch of slop I have with the wheel inside the column. Will be ultra lush. Bridflu has all shifter bushes on order so to make it magical feeling. I've made my own bushes but they fuck out fairly regularly because home made. Hoping to give it a QUICK flick of black before my wedding in a month but require my flatmate (not a mate, he's a scourge) to move out this week to free up space.

  14. I don't think there's actually anything wrong with your engine. A few months ago the Beetle overheard you saying that you'd put a rotary in it when the current engine dies, so it's just encouraging you to keep your promise.

  20. I hate clothes dryers. It's partly because I get up so early my brain shuts down at this time of night, but it's only slightly more painful than masturbating with a potato peeler. I'm going to fuck with it again tomorrow night. So Stoppers, The drums work ok when in good working order. But they're pretty poos. For the hassle of making therm work good, you might as well find some B110/B210 disc brake struts. (I should ask Fruit Luke if he has any standard ones) They're also pretty shit. But they accept a very easy very good brake upgrade. two things you will need to do when fitting front discs is, Remove the residual line pressure valve from the front brake circuit. (This is a wee needle thingee found under the big nut where the line to the front brakes exits the master cylinder) The other pitfall (At least with the drum brake B110's, so stands to reason that the front drum 210's would be the same too) is that the front drum equipped wagons/utes used a rear wheel cylinder with a different bore size. (To keep the brakes balanced with the larger fluid demands of drums over discs) Failure to change those can result in a rear end lock which wants to lock up before the front. (Great in a rally car, not so good on a wet road with a northstar V8 sitting in the boot) A brake booster was a factory option on some 120Y wagons. If you can't find one of these, then the booster from a 180B (610) is the same piece. (Not saying some others aren't too, but those are the ones that I know for sure are the same) The B310 boosters are a bit different again IIRC.

  27. Love the quality of your build tom. Super sweet. Any issues with the modified crossmembers/diff mounts etc? Also, Thread spam, But who is this Kayne fellow? Does he do panel work only, or does he do mechanical stuff too. Am almost keen to get someone to take my Z for cert with Julian, and remedy any things that come out of the cert... As i can't find the time during the week. Plus I'm in wellington and car is in Masterton.

  29. You can fit an A15 without certification, An increase in 25% of power or capacity is still WOF territory 125% of 1200cc is 1500cc... Jus sayin nameen? edit - I could be wrong as I'm recalling info from 10 years ago when I was doing WOFs. I forget.

  38. Yesterday the replacement mikuni carb parts arrived from motolab in the states, which is the cheapest place i could find. still wasnt cheap! in a last minute discovery i found that my carbs have different slides to literally every single Mikuni BST40 i could find. not even one obscure picture on the internet showed the flat bottomed slides i originally had, so i made the decision to replace all four. the next couple photos show the difference. so the carbs have been rebuilt and reinstalled, and the ECU wired back in, now all thats left is to get my partner to hold the key while i time it back up to ECU timing requirements. then once its back to running spec ill look at replacing the points module with a hall sensor, and i also want to replace the mechanical fuel pump, which up untill this point hasnt really given me any issues (runs with a 3psi regulator) but its very ugly, and i just know a pressure sensing pump will work FAR better. i also have a speedo cable on the way, and then its wof time once again!

  39. Hey so i purchased this with it being on my list of cars I limited myself to. It was shortly after transported from Dunedin to Christchurch. Unloading it of the trailer saw the battery dead so that was the first issue and the clutch not wanting to dissengage. So first rewired the alternator and it runs and charges sweet now. The clutch fork was no longer adjustable so after bleeding the system a spacer was added and that left me with a driving car. So this needs sorting anyone in CHCH that wants to do a cashie or recommends anyone that can do it resonably cheap but proper id love to hear from them. So i added these as the steel wheels it came on were bent or so i thought. There was a steering shake that increased with speed so my playful blats in this and it is very playful were cut sort. But these were the culprits.... Someone spaced the steelies to not rub on the struts with fucking washers... So with this solved i got to take full advantage of its beautiful running.... 186... Which it is certed for and is suprising nice in this and gives it plenty of fun in the lower three gears. It runs a w50 5 speed btw. So im sorting some parts now need bumpers mainly front one. And a few interior parts plans are get it roadworthy again. Also if anyone is interested in it it may be for sale as i know of my dream car for sale.. an mx32 with factory 4m and irs. so this may be out the door to get me into that. If not il build it up until i can afford the mx.

  41. it was, now its been raining for 3 months its all fucking mud Got some wood to line the wall from the plyguy. was pretty cheap. mostly cosmetic seconds. done about 75% of this end. Just need another stud to attach it to, and wire up the switchboard. and find my motorvation. i left it out in the rain somewhere? also partially built some shelves. it was easy cos the wall was half my shelves already built. couple lengths of 4x2 and some other random offcuts, plus some more seconds ply to line them. They are 700mm apart so im thinking of making some levels in between the current ones starting to fill up...

I also recieved the WarP 9 motors, Tyco EVC500 contactors and maintenance switch which will be off to the engineer next week to get installed! We also meet with our biggest sponsor Peter, the CEO of ETCO who has opened big oppurtunities for the KEV70!
