  1. So at Nats this year I crashed it. And it looked like this, it was my fault, needed to cross 2 lanes of traffic to get into a petrol station making a right hand turn, lane closest to me the traffic was slow and someone let me pass, stuck my nose out to see if anyone was coming and boom, yes they were. Its amazing how little damage the Mark II wore compared to the other car, these things must be built pretty well. Bonnet was already rusty and bogged from previous owner, needed replacing anyway and so needed to get a new bonnet, bumper mounts, 2 headlights and a corner light. The rest was panel magic. Managed to find an old bonnet and got it rust repaired by mate, found a bumper with mounts and some trims. The lights and corner light I got in from Yahoo Japan. Car has been in the garage with the front pulled off since nats and finally went in to panelbeaters last week. The amazing Englishman (Bubblegoose) and his crew did the work and now it looks like this:

  2. Getting there. I dropped the 65 to a 60 on the rear, Need to sort the front but other than that, I'm happy with the progress. I'll get a can matched within a week I'd say and do a dapper job of the guards.

  3. If we're opening it up to movies that aren't auto-centric then +1 for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Also - if documentary is possiblity, On Any Sunday is a simply brilliant doco about oldschool motorcycle racing produced in 1971 (when all the good road movies were created really) by Bruce Brown of Endless Summer fame.

  4. Woooooot! Car's all back together, and HOLY SHITBALLS! It drives so much differently with the LSD adjusted. Previously, you would make a suggestion along the lines of "Please, may we turn this corner" and the car would be all like "FUCK YOU BATMAN" then you're all like "NO FUCK YOU" and then it turns. where as now, the steering effort seems about half, and it turns in soo soo much better. It doesnt single wheel peel either, and the diff noise has completely vanished so great success all round! It's still got miserable traction, but I'm due a set of fresh tires. Traction brackets might be the only thing that will really help though. I've been looking at the options of either R888, Toyo Proxes T1R, Achilles 123 or Nitto NT01. It's just a toss up between whether I want faster laptimes but shittier to drive any other time, or nice to drive but overheating tires. I think for now I'll go with the T1Rs (which I've used previously and found to be awesome) and then keep an eye out for a spare set of wheels that fit before getting semis perhaps. Either way, pretty happy right now! Fred: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/21625-romans-cod-piece

  5. So latest on the Viva.. Its been repaired under insurance. Was really weird not doing the job myself but I did 'check in' a couple of times to inspect. Repair is good. Then Shane primed it last week and on Monday it got its top coat. Here is shane giving its bum a coat of high build (or something painty ish) picture upload The bumper is away getting straightened and rechromed. Ooooooh that will be flashy. I do hope they can straighten it out as it was quite bent. On Sunday we took it out and did some more tuning. Its running really well now. Just need to fine tune a few little areas to get the idle even smoother and remove the mild hunting at light throttle openings when on cruise. I have not been able to get the fan to switch on however. I have checked all the wiring and removed the main chip/daughter board to check the circuit there and all good. So maybe a software issue otherwise I have somehow blown a transistor? Luckily its really easy to get to the ecu and work on it!!! I really do like my roll out ecu drawer... WE decided to take it out to our land and get some photos of it while sunny. The parking area seems huge when its just a little Viva parked up... We went to the first OS Nelson area meet last Thursday night. The car was dwarfed by this big old girl... After getting some snaps I gave it a good hard caning and boy its quick on the hills! Sadly the extra power is showing up all the other 'old car' design faults. I think under really hard acceleration the back squats down and the 1800 magnum axle is possibly hitting the tunnel. The trailing arm bolts move/bang back and forth in the holes too. I really would like to fit an IRS setup into this car. I measured the track- from across the outer faces of the tyres and it came up at 1545mm so I need to look at something off a smaller rwd car. I think the mx5 setups I was thinking of using are 80mm wider and I want to avoid using front wheel drive offset rims. I need dish... I will continue to do some research on what might fit. Otherwise I keen to cut/chop/adapt/build my own setup. But If I can find a setup that is close to working it will save a big ball ache when it comes to re-cert time. I've lots of other things I want to make/modify as well but cant really start until we have our shed all built. Currently waiting on plans and then the whole consent application so it will be a while yet. I might pop the car up on the hoist and remove the springs. Then I can jack up the axle up until it hits and squeezes the bump stops. I can then spot what might be hitting. Anyway- I am very much looking forward to the drive to Hanmer tomorrow. Always a fantastic drive with great scenery. Gonna be good!

  6. New (second hand) starter plus adjustments to the supporting ring and it now engages perfectly. Car starts and runs on the base tune sweet as with some re scaling to suit the larger injectors. Here is a picture of how Friday morning looked, Its pretty good feeling to have this thing turn fuel into energy and noise considering the number of second hand, fabricated, and experimental parts which have been mashed together, Even simple stuff like the galant CAS into the Evo 4 head was an unknown, let alone the pistons which have the valve cut-outs opposite to the head, or the squillions of other random things which have found their way onto this machine .

  15. So I seem to get the firing order wrong every time I work on these motors, but I got it sorted in the end. First attempt. FYI the dizzy spins anticlockwise and the firing order is 1-2-4-3. Then it actually went and the oil did what it was supposed to!?!?

  16. Hey guys and gals. Grinter and myself feel like dusting off the wagons this Sunday for a bit of a Wellington cruse. No plans as of yet as to a time or route but just looking to see if anybody else is keen for a lowkey drive and shit talk, maybe with a beer or two. Post interest here. *cruse is not limited to wagons, wagoneers or wagon related affiliates. Sedans, coupes, utes and vans are also welcome, soft tops however maybe shunned. Bring at owners risk*

  27. I now have the rhd windscreen wiper motor and arms from an rx2 to complete the conversion. I also picked up a new BNT clutch master $59 and a few more nolathane bushes for the front end. Now I have a full set of rx2 steelies that are going to get the sand blast treatment and a cheeky gunmetal powder coating. And because I need some serious help....I saw some cheap hotwires for sale so suffice to say I brought them. These are currently getting the wet and dry sanding treatment when I have a spare hour so should come up nice with a bit of time and effort. 13x7 4 x110 offset 0 You know I said I need help right....I saw a set of 14x7 in mazda 4 x 110 with lots of dish...they are now mine. I need a new set of 195/45/14 tyres but Toyo proxes are $170 ish. These are not to be mixed up with Chinese copies or cheap 13" ones. I've waited patiently for a set to come up of a long time. Still not 100% I will run them as I'm loving the hotwires.... Here is some inspiration Pulled the hubcaps out the other day...

  29. so while i'm super happy with the 14/s and low profile tyres its created a few extra problems. the guys i bought the car off never planned for it to go low, let alone this low, so when they needed to notch the sump to clear the drag link on the steering they put a massive box on the front to gain oil capacity back. this is now touching the ground, on a flat surface. hmmmmm might need to do something about that so i'm pretty sure that its a hilux sump they modified, just trying to find info on whether the other 20/21/22R sumps will be better suited to this setup, then i can buy another sump and actually be able to get the car out of the driveway again. the exhaust is also a problem, i've got no idea where the extractors run from factory but after a good look underneath the only spot i can see for the exhaust to cross to the outside of the chassis is right behind the steering before the chassis kicks down. this will involve a bit of work because my extractors are still 2 bits of pipe at this point (4-2-1), and its not exactly the biggest gap to go through once things start moving around with the car running. so the previous system just went under the chassis which is way to low for the way its setup now. i've cut off the low hanging bits so i can drive it (once sump is sorted) but its pretty much tractor like so i'll need to get onto an exhaust system pretty quick. it needs to go through this cutout in the rear, which is what it did from factory. and out in the sun, its hard to get good pics in the driveway, need to hurry up and find a sump so i can drive the bitch somewhere!!! cheers Matt

  30. Finally got the colour on it. Came out ok for a rangi garage job. Looks better than it did so I'll take it. Managed to get the correct colour code which made matching the colour easy. Installed a few parts back on again. Started stripping down motor to tidy a few things up. Polished a few old alloy bits Starting on new brake lines this week.

  35. Started working on the car again while i have a break from karting. The motor has been running sweet as, the only thing i've done was replace the electronic fuel pump with the mechanical one as it wasn't getting enough fuel. So changed it and it made a huge difference especially in the top end as it's not starving for fuel anymore. I'll still have to get a new carb or twin carbs for it one day. We went for a wof and it failed because of rust. So i've decided we might as well get all the rust fixed and prepare it for paint. Started stripping it down and most of the rust is on the guards so its actually not to bad. I was going to get it painted eventually anyway so now is a good chance to do it. The back seats do have seat belts, they were just hidden! Found out the original color was silver, so it'll be good going back to a similar color.
