Popular Post Roman Posted November 12, 2020 Author Popular Post Posted November 12, 2020 A low kms (120k) RS model that looked like it crashed into a pole is/was at PIck a Part. Pinched the bucket seats out of it which after a scrub up look nearly brand new. I can now go around corners without feeling like I'm going to slide off a toad stool Someone had taken the injectors out the motor so it filled up to the brim with rain water. So thats fucked. But it had a C56 gearbox which was worth grabbing. Open diff but my mate Ken was saying it's not too hard to swap over and he's got a torsen we can put in it. Cool Also on the site Jauce.com which is a bidding and shipping site for Yahoo auctions Japan. A while back I bid on a NOS Carina tail light which is incredibly rare thing to stumble across. As even second hand facelift lights are super hard to find (I have no spares at all) But at last minute I got sniped on the bid and I was working on site somewhere and couldnt check it. Shit house! But I had to deposit a couple hundred bucks into my account on the site first to be able to bid for it, so after I lost the auction the money has still been sitting in there. So instead I found a brand new 4kg 1NZ chromoly flywheel for 200 bucks. Sweet deal! It might be a while away as I think it's still sea based shipping for stuff from Japan. It was a bit of a wanker getting the motor and box out, it will be more so when caring about preserving some of the lines and wiring etc in the engine bay. So although this gearbox would help significantly at the drags, probably more so than any further motor stuff. I'm not going to bother till I've got a 1NZ ready to go in with it as it's too much work to just pull it out again a bit later. So that's a while off. Also surprisingly my exhaust manifold is in the country with the courier already so I might get that tomorrow. Will be interesting to see how it goes. 16 1 Quote

I found the opposite recently, no sea shipping option on Buyee. I'd normally use someone for my Japan buys but the item popped up in short notice so had to go Buyee. 2 Quote
Sambo Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 The RS models have rear disc brakes.. 2 Quote
Popular Post Roman Posted November 23, 2020 Author Popular Post Posted November 23, 2020 Unless something miraculous happens it looks like I'm not gonna be able to take this to the drags or do anything else much fun with it for a while. Reason being, this happened to my Nissan work car coming up the Bombay hill yesterday: With a BHG to match. So its off to scrap! Which now means I'm back to needing the Echo as a reliable and sensible driving appliance. For the meantime my job depends on it. Good thing I didnt manage to blow it up already. So I've gone back to the factory intake manifold so I can have an air filter back on it. It will still be heaps more fun to drive though than before! as the better springs/wheels/etc still make it a lot more entertaining. I put the new exhaust manifold on but it didnt make any difference. I suspect it would once the rest of the exhaust flows a bit better though. My printed ITB manifold was getting a bit tired looking with a few cracks starting to develop. It was still holding together fine but the idle quality was starting to get worse. I'm fairly amazed it lasted that long though, and the main cracks had just spread out from some areas that got damaged when I first tightened it up. A++ would prototype in this manner again but definitely not a long term solution. Looked nice with the black trumpets on it though. I'll still have the ECU and wideband in it though so I'll try wring some blood out of a stone in the economy stakes. 800km to a tank perhaps possible with lean burn strategy and some EGR? Usually around 650 on factory ECU. (from ~33 litres) which is 5l per 100km. In the meantime I will keep slowly hoarding some bits for a prius motor swap. 9 2 7 Quote

fuel Posted November 23, 2020 Posted November 23, 2020 I'm definitely looking back at the 9752 "is my car oldschool?" forum posts and having a mild chortle 4 4 Quote
Popular Post Truenotch Posted November 23, 2020 Popular Post Posted November 23, 2020 That's sad news about drag day! Here's hoping your boss buys a new work car in the next couple of weeks? It's a shame, cause I won't be able to install your new windscreen banner now: 11 1 18 Quote
Roman Posted November 24, 2020 Author Posted November 24, 2020 Hahahaha fingers crossed! Holy shit that windscreen banner is fucking amazing 2 Quote
ajg193 Posted November 24, 2020 Posted November 24, 2020 I am actually saddened by this turn of events. I think your only option now is to stick a turbo on it and get some reliable power. 3 Quote

Popular Post Roman Posted December 11, 2020 Author Popular Post Posted December 11, 2020 I pay more mortgage faster than I should so I can pay it off quicker I wear safety glasses when I'm doing stuff I sedately drove around a Nissan Wingroad work car I drive a Toyota Echo and then decided not to do fun stuff with it because that's a sensible idea too now that my work car blew up I draw graphs for a hobby I MAKE ALL THESE SACRAFICES TO THE GODS OF SENSIBLE AND WHAT DO I GET BACK MISERY! MISERY I SAY! HOW SENSIBLE CAN ONE MAN BE TIME FOR SOME BAD DECISIONS / DRAGS I jizzed up my shitty manifold with some carbon to hold it together for a bit longer Fingers crossed that this car makes so little power that nothing breaks 27 7 3 Quote
Popular Post Roman Posted December 12, 2020 Author Popular Post Posted December 12, 2020 It held together and nothing broke - home safe Stoked with how things went, improved PB by 1.2 seconds to a 16.4 Only did 6 runs as it was clear I wasnt going to go groundbreakingly faster. But using the rule of thumb of " 0.1 off your 60ft is worth 0.2 off your 1/4 time" If I combined my best 60foot with best quarter I'd ideally end up somewhere under 16.3 which I think is pretty sweet for a 1300cc echo haha. But I was more worried about getting home okay this time so was minimal on burnouts off the line which might have helped. A++ would make drag day doort noises and excuses again. Hectic 1500 setup next time 23 4 Quote
keltik Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 This thing made so much dort, I was too busy wondering how the fuck it was so rowdy and I missed a shift. A+, would trade again 3 Quote
Popular Post Roman Posted December 13, 2020 Author Popular Post Posted December 13, 2020 I'm hugely grateful that Dad comes along and participates in things, he was super chuffed to get the Century out there. It still blows me away that these things are in any way shape or form, affordable and accessable. However his PB is still definitely with the JZX90 which is a low 14. and the blue skittle The wind noise doesnt quite capture the racket coming out of it, but a vid's a vid: 14 1 Quote
Popular Post Roman Posted January 28, 2021 Author Popular Post Posted January 28, 2021 Heading to Toyota Festival tomorrow to pest around at the trackday. Gonna be good! I'm gonna take my GPS along, as I've got my suspicions that this thing might actually be faster than the Carina through some of the tighter corners. So since I've had all of this going on, and seeing how parts are cheap etc etc and I've been trying to make my other car as light as possible. I must admit I've had some sick thoughts about changing motor in the carina. A beams 3SGE motor is ~160kg. A 1NZ motor is ~87kg. That's just an absolutely incredible difference. So figure with a downsize and turbocharge I could probably still be a good 40-50kg better off? I've been scratching around to try get a KG or two out of it here or there, but that's just a rediculous difference, and it would be super easy to make the same power level with a budget setup. And it's a little bit further back, and it would get better fuel economy, and thanks to being turbo I could keep a better final drive ratio for low rpm while cruising. So this is all just wild speculation / probably just get it running with beams motor and enjoy it for a bit. And then I had a hearty chortle when I was reading another forum and saw this chap from Finland: I'm not sure if this validates my idea as being a good one, or there's someone else equally perverted out there haha. He only had a time slip for 1/8th mile but was banging out some 1.8 sec 60 foots which is pretty sweet. Was originally NA 1300cc and he says made 100hp with ITB setup Then after a few iterations looks to be twin turbo and water to air intercooler. He only dynoed an earlier single turbo setup that made 192kw atw, and speculates that by change in injector duty has likely gone to around 350hp. It's completely hilarious that I've never seen anyone do a RWD NZ motor before, and happens to be a in a Carina of all things. 33 2 1 Quote
