  1. Well the last month has been full of late nights, early mornings, massive hours and a fair few km's for the car being towed around, Made it to my deadline of Beach Hop 16 JUST. Had the car dyno tuned the week before and made 260kw ATW with only 80% throttle and a 6k redline. Need to change the TPS from a toyota to a LS1 as the Toyota wasnt talking to the ECU after 80% throttle, with this change they tuner reckons I should get around 300kw which will be a laugh, Once it gets a few revs into her it pulls so well, so much fun/scarieness ha. Greg at Midnight Upholstery worked till 6am Monday morning before having a hours sleep and heading over to put it in/finish it, we got it done by 7.30 pm to get it on the trailer and off to Whanga by 8pm. Having only driven it for about 15minutes prior to Beach Hop this week would be its first real shakedown after the nearly 4 year build. Had some minor electrical issues on Monday night/Tuesday which we got sorted by Wed morn thanks to the Auto Sparkie in Whanga. Got it done just in time to leave late for the run to Waihi Beach Hop cruise, a clear road, mint day, car load of the crew and top down with some sounds made for a epic trip. Its first real shakedown/drive which was a hell of a lot of fun and I couldnt stop grinning! Car went well for the rest of the Hop and was in all the cruises without issue! Very very happy with the end result and now its time to get legal and clock up some miles. Heres a few photos for you guys of the end result, Will be getting my brother to take some sweet shots once its had a proper clean up and we have some time! Pic courtesy of FazyLuck Interior shot Heres a pic of it and my mates 64 SS Impala also as well as a mates airbagged Commer at Beach Hop Talk some shit! http://oldschool.co....westpala/page-7

  2. It's next week ish. I was thirsty for an answer. shhhhhh This is what a shitty picture of an open thermostat looks like, one step closer to being water seals. Step 17 is to buy largest fan you can find and gently place it onto the radiator. Magic! I'll see what adhesive foam I have and try seal the edges as best I can. Tomorrow I may even see how much it doesn't fit.

  3. Took it to beach hop, runs well 3A definitely didn't cut it up the hills. More I drive it the more I want to keep it oldschool, thinking how I can get the 4agze in there and keep it looking factory..

  4. Just a couple pics of the front and rear lights and bumpers going on. Ordered a new grille last week so that should arrive tomorrow. Also blacked the plates as one was a bit bent and barked up. Might try to get a couple doors together today.

  6. Took Maggie down to the Beach Hop over the weekend. Ran like an champ the whole way - only issue was the gross old heater hose finally gave up (nothing a quick trip to ripco couldn't fix). Got plenty of love despite having half the number of cylinders. Cool to see a few familiar OS faces too. The cops decided she didn't have room for 4 people across the back...

  8. Not a huge update but an update none the less. First off, yet another OS member has been generous enough to donate to this car! After seeing my pics and noticing my temporary oil cap he hooked me up with a spare one he had at the last OS meet!! Much love brother! After searching for number late lights that don't cost $60 odd dollars each from Palmside I decided to go with some LED ones from Repco. They were a good price, look modern, are hella functional and don't look like shit. To me that is a win. Next up with another functional piece of equipment. An aftermarket Tach. I have mounted it for funtion and IMO in the least horrible place I could. I also put the first sticker on her. I'm not going to plaster decals everywhere but this one seems to fit the car really well. and finally... For my birthday my lady put my personalised plate on layby Looking forward to getting it on the car once it is all paid!!

  9. I had to drill water passage holes in the block to suit the new heads, which was a little daunting. Older (pre-72) blocks have steam holes at the 12 o'clock position above each cylinder (I think they were relocated as people were overtorquing the intake and gaskets were blowing out at this narrow point). Looking at old vs new heads you can see the old arc shape that catered to a few locations, while the new heads have a triangular recess the block hole has to line up with. These correspond to about the 1:30 position on the block... I put the new gaskets in place and centre punched the location of the new hole... Interestingly the old gaskets had the holes in a slightly different position to the new Felpro set. Both located ok on the new heads though, new ones are more centred, old ones are the lower mark right on the edge... I taped up the block and used an old speaker magnet to catch any loose swarf... And they drilled ok. I used new 1/8" bits, kept the revs down and only snapped one as it caught on a protuding bit of casting as I broke through into the water jacket. Gotta admit I was getting nervous on the first one as I had read the thickness was between 1/4 and 1/2", and I was 20mm into it before I broke through. No dramas, just tapped the broken bit through with a nail and picked it up with a magnet. Rest of them went much easier, and I gave the holes a slight chamfer to tidy them up afterwards... And they line up well, pretty pleased to get this over with, next step is sliding in the new cam then putting bits back on...

  12. Clean up trans sump and filter, scrape off at least two attempts worth of sealing without removing previous gasket stuff, including a shitload of clear silicon, put straight edge across strange feeling end of sump, discover that some special cunt has bent the mating surface, tap it back as close as I can get it without a bench (next garage mod), refit sump with gasket goo, realise I've got 3 extra bolts, face palm, remove sump, refit filter, refit sump finger tight, let dry for an hour, tighten properly, now got a 24 hour wait for gasket goo to cure fully then top up through dipstick tube, then drive!!! Can I lose ATF through the bellhousing? It looks like there may be a minor leak around there somewhere but it's to dirty to see if it's ATF or oil. Ummmmmmm I didn't take any pics because it's a sump, you guys have all seen them. So because picture less updates are ultra lame here's the one the gf took when we picked it up. I was happy, but look like a tard. Cheers Matt

  16. The factory Holden diffs for that model are cone-type LSD and they are poose. From my experience, if theres a shudder, its terminal. Worn cone surfaces. There were plenty of occasions like this when working for a Holden dealership, especially with cop cars under 100km on the clock. Using the GM additive did not reduce the shudder, the only fix was to fit another diff (used) and hope for the best that it didnt have the same issue.

  19. Ask your dealer for the expensive additive in a little bottle, chuck it in with new fluid if you're feeling flash. Go do some slow figure 8's (not skids) in each direction a few times. Happy days.

  21. The factory GZE ECU already does switch it off at cruising, so you'll not gain much form that. Buuuutttt there's an undeniable novelty factor of having a supercharger turn on with the flip of a switch, and I'm all for novelties Shout out if you get stuck on something and need a hand, no spare parts though sadly!

  23. 4AG(Z)E swap is just toooooooo easy in a Carina, great option! Already A series cross member/mounts, already a T50, already hydraulic clutch, already an A series bellhousing, already T series diff etc etc. Way easier than AE85 > AE86 as half of the stuff is already there. All signs point to 4AGZE being an awesome option

  27. Hey all, on the home straight now, made a gearbox crossmember, got all my V8 front brake parts Got my concentric slave cylinder (I know Kiwibirdman didnt reccomend Howe racing, but after a lenghty conversation with the supplier i decided to take the risk) Got an adapter to go from the VL master cylinder to the braided line for the slave cylinder, Took a perfectly good bellhouse and made a hole for the bleed line, made some measurement to ensure the correct clearance between the clutch presure plate release bearing and fitted everything up, Gearbox is now in the car (hopefully for the last time) Also picked up my driveshaft from Beattys, no picture of that but im sure you can all imagine what a long black shaft looks like, all in all, progressing nicely!!

  28. Cos that lazy fucker Jones only painted the visible parts in red oxide, so it looks a bit shit without hubcaps. I might sort that tho.

  29. thats cool yeah mine is 84 square headight. yeah mines brown dash and tan seat and trim. perfectly 80's. its nice to see one getting some love anyway, rough or not these are getting rarer by the week. most now are just running their days out as farm hacks. i suppose thats what they were built for but still.. and thats cool on the wheel. mine wont ever justify or need anything flash but i've got a boomerang shaped one and i detest it. anything to replace it is cool. but yeah sweet as anyway keep me in mind at least.

  32. So the previous owner Jones came down to visit with his family and spent the time running around in the Snipe, his eldest son cried when they had to leave it behind.... Jones painted the bonnet for me and made some executive decisions around the styling, ie removing the granny trims from the wheels to make it a bit more ratty. I like it, it is a bit less nana spec;

  34. If you ever want to check if a car still has live rego go to https://transact.nzta.govt.nz/transactions/NoticeOfAcquisition/entry and fill out step 1 and 2. If the cars rego has been cancelled it will come up with an error. If its still live it will bring up the vehicles details. And its free.

  37. I have to confess to making the fatal mistake of sharing a few reminiscent Wild Turkeys with Rigamortice in the man cave whilst surfing Trademe. Look what we bought……. It’s a standard 3.3 (far too flash and “modern” to be called 202) 12 port Blue motor out of an early VH Commodore. Rigamortice will love the solid state HD ignition and I won’t have to adjust the **** points every few months! Even better when I dropped its knickers and flipped it over I discovered this. With some girls you sometimes just get lucky ……. A virgin spec 3 ¼ inch counterbalance crank complete with the legendary Starfire con rods. (The legend was that when Holden chopped 2 cylinders of the Red 6 to make the Starfire 4 it was so out of balance they had to fit it with stronger Starfire rods to stop it throwing a leg out of bed when given the proverbial ‘jandal’). I’ll need to grind the mains down to accept the smaller 186 journals and some machining will be required to convert the rear seal from rope to neoprene. I’ll have to possibly relieve the block & sump for clearance and I’ll obviously need to fit the lower deck height 202 pistons but Rigamortice will love the extra stroke, cubes and counterweights. Compared to the steel 186 X2 crank (top) the difference is obvious. We also bought something else (all Rigamortice’ s fault) but I’m not letting on in case the lovely Mrs sr2 has discovered this thread..

  40. So my joy is unbounded at receiving an email stating my parcel has arrived in the country, is being held by nz customs, and that they will send an invoice in a couple of days - once they have added up all the ways they can best squeeze my balls... Yes, this will be the replacement camshaft that NZ Post somehow managed to SNAP IN FUCKING HALF. And yes, this escaped any duty previously (under an exchange rate that should have made it cost more). And yes, it is Easter, so I expect it to be a fortnight before I receive anything... So. More delays, more cost, more frustration. All I ask is consistency (or a better method of getting parts I want without being fiscally raped). Cunts... This on top of a nice letter in the box yesterday advising I had been snapped (and demanding I pay for) doing the insane and life-threatening speed of 56 kmh. On a deserted 4-lane road. At 6:30am. I fucking love bureaucracy...

  41. Spews water out the overflow at ??? temp and I was hoping it was the radiator or cap, solution was to replace both. Chinas finest from redline. Outlet faces the wrong way. I stared at it for awhile and thought "what would rookie dave do?" then cut that bitch off. Cut other un needed things, drilled some things etc and forgot to take a photo of it in the hole. But don't worry, it still got real hot and blew lots of water out the overflow bottle.

  43. ^ So figured out why my results were slightly skewed... Repeated the test but did it in reverse. Set wrench then positioned weight/s along shaft until it just clicked, and measured the distance. Then maths (adding 0.8 kg to account for weight of toolbar) and looks like we're good to go, the numbers line up well from 15 - 90 ft-lbs. With my nerd on I get an average error of 1.0207% over that range. Quite an interesting exercise really...

  44. Wow what an awesome day. Thanks to all those that made the effort and came along. Everyone seemed to be having a good day and I will certainly go back. I was told just before I left that the season is pretty much finished now for most clubs except those with fake grass. Opens up again in September. Certainly sounds like the old folk there have right good benders through summer. I chuckled when one fella told me they will swap orientation so every second time you swap ends you can pop inside and grab another beer... Massive thanks to the Pohara bowling club for looking after us. When we rolled up they called us over and had laid out a wicked selection of proper good food and tea/coffee/beer at the bar. After the afternoons bowling, where it must be added the weather turned out so fine for..almost too hot, we rocked back in for tea and they had put out more scones/cakes etc! They were a good BOC and very chilled out. Cheers to them! So I took a few photos but as usual half had shitty light etc. But here's mine. Looking forward to seeing the ones Shane took. One the way over the Takaka hill.. was a bit greasy but dried out well for sweet fast drive home... I spotted this young tourist checking out the fine racing'rolla... Parked up at Pohara. Many of you might well recognise this park up from nats... Getting schooled up the fine art of bowling.. Then learning the ropes and seeing what teams we are in... they mixed us all up with some good bowlers so we all had a chance. Action shots... More food.. The prize giving... I left last and continued on towards Wainui bay because well.. the roads are just ace along there. I think I will have beaten my last record for most petrol used but well worth it for the fun day had. On the way home Takaka hill got a good trashing and to the Probe V6 driver who tried to keep up for the first 1km or so.. ha ha, yeah that shitty little old car that rolls over onto its door handles can still hustle along Wainui bay in the late afternoon sun.. And I'll leave you with this so you can all have a study and start learning for the future OS Bowling league - of which Nelson area are now the current masters at Cheers Nelson crew!
