  3. Hi all. I have just started a full restoration of my MK 1 GT 2 Door Cortina. Currently it is fully stripped and with Greg at Custom Metal Shapers. All the exterior paint has been stripped and it is very rust free for one of these. Unfortunately it was restored in the early 80's after I suspect it had a frontal and as a result the front rails and inner guards are a bit ugly. It would really annoy me every time I opened the bonnet knowing what was there so the front rails and inner guards are going to be replaced. The exterior will be finished as per the original Dragoon Red and all completely standard. Ditto the black interior apart from a Les Leston woodrim wheel. Running gear will be all standard precrossflow with period modifications. Engine is a Throbnozzle Racing pre crossflow running the standard 28/36 Webber with jetting to suit. Gearbox is fitted with a 2000E gear set and Ali bell housing, tailshaft and remote housing. Diff is 3.7 in an Ali Nose. Shocks all round are adjustable Spax. Wheels are going to be BRM 4 spokes from the 60/70's. Aiming to have it on the road October 2016

  4. I bought a new toy. I've been looking for an RN30/40 for ages but I've been pretty fussy, with one of the harder conditions being that it needs a wellside. There are fuck all. Then this came up, I was like meh, extra cab, but bonus 4x4 tub and guards Plus it's got this!!! Plus it's engineered, and only cost me 3.5K. So fucking cheap. So I went to look, drove it, sounds amazing, bargained the price down a bit, then went home and organised the $ and picked it up last night. It's got a few things to sort, typical hilux rust, high beams are out, shit wiring job on the stereo etc, but it'll make a way better daily than the boring corona I'm retiring. Cheers Matt Discussion Thread

  5. Cos that lazy fucker Jones only painted the visible parts in red oxide, so it looks a bit shit without hubcaps. I might sort that tho.

  6. My old RN40 which was a 79 had a black interior (dash + steering wheel + Door cards, but the seats were tan/brown. They all seem to have brown when they went to square headlights.

  7. Cheers man Door cards are definitely not stock, dash was originally blue, not sure whether that colour was an Aussie option, I know the 88 single cab I had back in NZ was all brown originally Steering wheel will be up for grabs eventually, I haven't got the $ spare at the moment to buy a replacement though so it'll be a while. Postage on packages from Aus to NZ is pretty killer too, I've sent a few presents back to family and usually end up paying more for the postage. If there's room in my bag next time I head back that's a possibility though, but that won't be until late January. Mine is actually pretty rough around the edges too, paint job is all over the place with shade and quality, white just photographs well. Cheers Matt

  11. So the previous owner Jones came down to visit with his family and spent the time running around in the Snipe, his eldest son cried when they had to leave it behind.... Jones painted the bonnet for me and made some executive decisions around the styling, ie removing the granny trims from the wheels to make it a bit more ratty. I like it, it is a bit less nana spec;

  12. Got my linkage and fitted it had a few issues and took quite a bit of fiddling to get it right including grinding the throttle wheel tab to get the idle down and shortening the return spring ect but in the end it all worked out just wayy more of a faf round than i thaught . Went to pick a part today and grabbed a newer coil that had a bracket as the old one was cable tied to be held in place in clearly the wrong bracket owell. for some reason none of my video links are working ill try to fix them later but it idles ect now https://youtu.be/vXEz4ZKxa8I https://youtu.be/KAodGSoZxGE

  15. Clean up trans sump and filter, scrape off at least two attempts worth of sealing without removing previous gasket stuff, including a shitload of clear silicon, put straight edge across strange feeling end of sump, discover that some special cunt has bent the mating surface, tap it back as close as I can get it without a bench (next garage mod), refit sump with gasket goo, realise I've got 3 extra bolts, face palm, remove sump, refit filter, refit sump finger tight, let dry for an hour, tighten properly, now got a 24 hour wait for gasket goo to cure fully then top up through dipstick tube, then drive!!! Can I lose ATF through the bellhousing? It looks like there may be a minor leak around there somewhere but it's to dirty to see if it's ATF or oil. Ummmmmmm I didn't take any pics because it's a sump, you guys have all seen them. So because picture less updates are ultra lame here's the one the gf took when we picked it up. I was happy, but look like a tard. Cheers Matt

  21. So, not a lot has happened directly to the car, but it has a new home! After a month of cleaning, fixing, building etc - we are settled in Otorohanga and I am finally onto organising the shed and work can start anew on the car. (it took a week and 2 massive skips just to clean out the shed of my old mans junk). lifted it onto the spit - stoked it didn't break and the car is still mounted a month later I do have to adjust the angle of the main mounts a touch so it will spin and move around properly (product of building it on a wonky floor in the old garage) AND........hands up who like NOS??? 40yr old mint condition badges!! Come have a chat!! //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/49950-alasdairs-1974-ke25-corolla/

  28. You can see the DR30 inlet is quite a bit too big here in the first pic : I managed to find a S12 inlet manifold though for a really good price, pretty stoked as these are pretty hard to come by. This gives me heaps more room, like the way Nissan intended it! I am just in the process of assembling the new manifold as we speak. I have test fitted it though and it looks heaps better already, plus the bonnet closes without having to modify anything or get a super rare RS-X style bonnet bulge. Once the engine is up and running I plan on painting the cam cover the proper wrinkle dark red colour and a few other little bits and pieces obviously!

  29. Onto the more exciting stuff. Got the AC mounted and the power steer pump etc. Pretty much dummied up the whole lot and dropped it in one go. I had a few problems with the DR30 inlet manifold taking up a lot of room in the S12 engine bay. People said they fit ok - they dont... So I had to remove it and re think the situation.

  30. So I have been pretty busy doing work on this as much as possible! Knocked up a set of mounts to fit the FJ20 into the CA20 cross member, as they dont actually bolt up like people say they do. The cross members are definitely different, although only very slightly but enough to cause headaches when trying to fit the engine properly and level / square. These mounts sit the FJ sump level with the CA20 cross member but still allow me to just close the original bonnet without having to use an RS-X Bonnet bulge. Pretty happy it clears, will show later how close everything is and I had to do a few things a bit different as you will see. Cleaned the engine bay up, came out quite good actually under all the 30 years worth of grubbyness. I got the steering rack rebuilt as it was leaking a bit around the seals. An ideal time to do so while I am in there - no pesky engine in the way!

  32. And that's all for March. More to come in April, but this baby will take me until November or December to finish as I only have about half a day a week free, so it'll be a wee while between meaningful updates. I'd love to have the subfloor finished by May. Always May EDIT: Oh, I should probably share the view that'll be from the cabin's second deck. There will be two decks, one covered and hard up against the cabin (that'll have an outdoor kitchen), but there shall also be a second deck a few meters away with an outdoor dining table. This is what that dining table will look at. I quite like it (sorry about the horizon).

  33. Time for fuel tank - this job got entrusted to Jon and EUROChris at Strange Workshop. My requirements basically centered around not having any external pumps or additional surge tanks, I wanted to keep everything contained within the original tank confines beneath the car as a means of minimising clutter. Project_KP61_4AGE (163) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Stock tank. What a thoroughly uninspiring piece of crap. Acid dipped as I knew we'd be chopping it up, so why not purge the shit out of it somehow so we didn't blow ourselves up. Project_KP61_4AGE (2338) by Richard Opie, on Flickr This was an investigative foray into a spare tank I had, just to see what we were working with and to map out a location to pop the pump and eventual intank surge-tank arrangement. Project_KP61_4AGE (2352) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Project_KP61_4AGE (2381) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Project_KP61_4AGE (2404) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Project_KP61_4AGE (2436) by Richard Opie, on Flickr The requisite section was measured up and chopped from the shitty fuel tank, and transcribed across to the nice, shiny unmolested tank. This was effectively sized to accomodate the pump with some space around it. Project_KP61_4AGE (2327) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Project_KP61_4AGE (2407) by Richard Opie, on Flickr The inlet/outlet fitting flange was also salvaged from the scrap tank - although in this case it started life as the flange for the fuel filler pipe but was large enough to permit a hole size that suited getting the pump assembly through it. Cut, grind, linish, weld, done. A little bit of panelbeating was needed on the uneven tank surfaces. Project_KP61_4AGE (2414) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Project_KP61_4AGE (2451) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Project_KP61_4AGE (2481) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Chris folded a box up out of fresh steel and got busy welding it all together. Capacity sits at about 3 litres for this. Project_KP61_4AGE (2453) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Project_KP61_4AGE (2467) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Measurements satisfied, it's time to chop up the actual fuel tank. No pressure... Project_KP61_4AGE (2489) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Project_KP61_4AGE (2487) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Pop it in the hole maaaaaate. Levelled up so the surge tank's on the same plane as the fuel tank itself and shit's pretty well sorted. A little bit of trimming of the hole in the tank and it'll be an ideal fit. Project_KP61_4AGE (2562) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Project_KP61_4AGE (2569) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Project_KP61_4AGE (2585) by Richard Opie, on Flickr The fitting to accomodate the AN fittings for the return and feed lines, as well as support the pump via a cradle was fashioned from the spare fuel filler, the filler neck chopped off and a plate tacked across the top. The (dummy mounted to check space in this shot) AN fittings have been welded to pipes which sit below, with a soft line to run to the pump itself on the feed side. Project_KP61_4AGE (2604) by Richard Opie, on Flickr The pump/cradle itself is pretty cool I think. This is just bent up from ~5mm steel rod, welded and braced to the abovementioned plate. Pump's just the Joe average Walbro. Project_KP61_4AGE (2618) by Richard Opie, on Flickr Finally, the surge tank/pump/cradle/bulkhead combo deal perched outside the tank. Holes drilled in the surge tank as this area sits above the original bottom level of the fuel tank and of course we'll need to permit SOME fuel to flow into the unit. Final welding still to take place but afterwards, the tank will get a treatment/seal, the fittings will all be re-passivated and the tank given a coat of black paint to tidy it all up! Thanks for reading Bought not built.

  36. second after slam in importance, was clean it, as its filthy. every bit of trim i pulled off had cockroaches and spiders under it. so i stripped the whole interior, put a bug bomb in it, and waterblasted the whole inside and ''fixed'' the seat, with 2 t-shirts and some duct tape

  38. Its sitting on super low Lovells springs at the moment, the fronts need to come down some more obviously. I have more suspension parts coming soon to sort this out. Stay tuned. The eagle eyed will notice I removed the mud flaps and 80's neon side stripe graphic as well. Started collecting pieces to begin the manual conversion. Do you know how hard it is to find manual parts for these things here?! Luckily I got a manual pedal box from a fellow forum member, it's still in NZ at mums place so will have to grab it or get it sent over soon haha. I want to keep the CA20e for now as it runs well, plus the AC and power steer are a luxury I don't want to give up! Will head to pick a part and get a CA20 manual box from a R31 pintara, they are still semi common in the junk yards and I can use all the bits in my budget conversion until the next step. Also currently looking for a FJ20, they are about but also very rare in complete condition with all the mounts, bits and pieces to fit a S12. I also want brackets to mount the AC, PS etc. Probably dreaming as most of that stuff gets binned when they got stuck in Datsun 1600's etc. See how I go on my hunt. I guess that's half the fun building old cars eh? I don't know if I could go SR20 though, even though they are common as and so cheap to get parts for...
