  1. So, not a lot has happened directly to the car, but it has a new home! After a month of cleaning, fixing, building etc - we are settled in Otorohanga and I am finally onto organising the shed and work can start anew on the car. (it took a week and 2 massive skips just to clean out the shed of my old mans junk). lifted it onto the spit - stoked it didn't break and the car is still mounted a month later I do have to adjust the angle of the main mounts a touch so it will spin and move around properly (product of building it on a wonky floor in the old garage) AND........hands up who like NOS??? 40yr old mint condition badges!! Come have a chat!! //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/49950-alasdairs-1974-ke25-corolla/

  4. HOW TO: TRD spec your beams oil pan Back in the day, TRD made a bunch of parts for the beams engine but they're mostly discontinued. Which is no real loss as they all cost zillions so no one bought them. One product that they made though is a TRD oil pan, which was essentially mildly modified standard one. So here's what they did (Thanks to CelicaRA45 for the info) Step 1: Lower the oil pickup deeper in the pan with a spacer. (4mm thick from memory) You need a 2nd spacer of same thickness for the brace on the pickup obviously. (NOTE: Not reccomended mod if you think you're likely to smash your pan into the ground, removed mine ages ago for this reason) Step 2: The front left corner of the sump, for some reason, has a section where under hard braking the oil can flow back out the top of the oil pan: Soooo bash the bejesus out of this, to seal the gap like so: Step 3: The other place where oil can flow up out of the pan, is the dip stick hole. So you want to fit a pipe that extends down into the pan pretty much to the bottom (just need to leave enough gap so that oil can reach its level when the car is stationary) and then extend the pipe upwards as far as it can go without hitting the underside of the alloy part of the sump. Cant remember exact measurements for this but it's pretty self explanatory Step 4: Clean the heck out of everything so there's no oil at all. Then, with some Toyota Seal packing Black run a bead around the perimeter of the pan to fill any small gaps, then give it a smear down into the gap so that it fills up any potential leaks. I mention Toyota Seal Packing Black in particular, because it's Wizard Magic stuff. Expensive - But awesome. If you're gonna use some other gunk then dont bother with this step. It's money well spent for the comfort of knowing that my sump isnt going to leak... ever. That's it! Reassemble it all and enjoy some high G cornering without blowing your shit up. Still need to make a bash gaurd, but I'm at least back in action as soon as I bother buying some oil and topping it back up.

  5. air cleaner setup finished. i hunted for ages to find a filter of any sort that had a small enough outlet to suit the 2TG but i couldn't find anything that wasn't utter shit. i had this trust one that I've had for ages and it fit better than anything else id found but it was chrome and the foam filter medium had turned to powder. i found a pod filter that had a similar foam bit so i bought that and the foam fits nicely into the trust pod, unfortunately the foam is blue but you can't have everything. then i took the frame to work and gave it a light bead blast so the paint would stick and i painted it black. job done. and in exciting news i put new plugs in it along with fresh oil and a new filter. oh, and i got the heater core reco-ed and I've put the heater box back together with new foam in it and thats back in the car now. oh and also - the windscreen washer bottle was a bit second hand looking with some of the plastic all powdery and shit so i gave that a light bead blast too. i gave it a thick coat of primer then i sanded it back to try and get it looking a bit more presentable then i painted it black so thats done as well. I've bought a cylindrical radiator overflow bottle that ill mount down beside the side of the radiator and that will just about finish the engine bay i think. 2016-03-29_04-48-47 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-03-31_04-41-02 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-03-31_04-41-10 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-03-31_04-54-52 by sheepers, on Flickr

Motor runs mint, clutch would have been done not long ago, interia all there and good con, coupe little strainers here and there. Full digital dash 3A T50 (22 spline I'm told) Small axel One very open diff And a truck ton of body roll. Will be left standard for a while. Plans of SSR mk3's New fixed shock and spring combo all round to get it low and stiff Lock diff or LSD And swap the 4agze out of my aw11 into it once the 7A finally goes in //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/52439-ashs-a6-carina-coupe-lyfe/

  10. Let's play "spot the AW11" on Google Street View... Image is from May 2015, so a month or two before the car was sold and shipped out to NZ. Yup, that's it on the right hand side of the shot. The car yard (Marumi Auto) has also revamped their website to highlight the fact they specialize in selling '80s and '90s sports cars, which is sort of cool! (And also some really oddball cars...) 15. If you ever want to check if a car still has live rego go to https://transact.nzta.govt.nz/transactions/NoticeOfAcquisition/entry and fill out step 1 and 2. If the cars rego has been cancelled it will come up with an error. If its still live it will bring up the vehicles details. And its free.

  21. I'm keen on keeping the original block in the car with everything under the bonnet looking as it did in the early 80's. Running the 3.3 Blue counterbalanced crank will bring the capacity of the X2 186 up to 202, (i.e. from 3.0 to 3.3).

  22. The factory sump is pretty awesome, when you look at the cast alloy piece that bolts to bottom of engine as well. Definitely leagues ahead of Gen 1&2 sump that was just a single piece pressed "swimming pool" design heh. The dipstick hole being enlarged obviously acts like a drain to sump, perhaps same for other side. But maybe one of those things that works well on street tires but not so well on track tires under heavy braking where a lot more oil tries to slosh back up on top. Definitely seems like intentional design decisions, for whatever reason. Unless it's a manufacturing thing perhaps. Dont really hear of people blowing big ends quite like you do with earlier engines... Altezza engines usually have a titanium valve break, then break the cambelt, then fuck the entire engine. People always go on about a flat head V8, that's what they're meaning right?

  24. The distributor vacuum and mechanical advance flogging out is a common problem in '80s Japanese cars. I'm about to send a B6T (Mazda DOHC turbo) dizzy off to that Quality Rebuilds joker for an overhaul, and will report back on how it goes if you've had no luck by the time it comes back.

  27. LOL; I appreciate your concerns re my financial solvency but the issue with Mrs sr2 is not with expenditure it is with the far more (potentially) explosive issue of where to store my burgeoning spare parts collection! (Believe me I support far more expensive hobbies than just my passion for refurbishing old cars). Re the valve issue; the guides are already oversize, I'll probably bite the bullet and replace them with standard to solve the problem.

  29. Nats was good, arrival was delayed by a workshop giving me the car back with no brakes on Thursday evening, not sure what they did but I bled it up myself on Friday morning then set off. Scavenger hunt was fun On the subject of belts I think I can finally put that to bed. I now have no whine and they all fit nicely. Whine was caused by a too narrow belt, a 15A1055 fixed that, a new turnbuckle style tensioner and a 13A900 fixed the slippy alt and an AX25 gave the right length for the power steering (needed something between 13A675 and 13A710). The cooling system performed like a champ in a long hot traffic jam on the way back from Nats, the fan chooches the heat away nicely and the 91 on 85 off thermoswitch seems to be ideal. Next up is to sort the rear so I can lower it again and change the speedo drive in the gearbox so the speedo is a touch more accurate (reads 90 at 100kph).

So: - Flares - Wheels installed - 10" Wards - Internal bonnet release from newer mini - Front grill to match internal bonnet release (Old one used to be able to access from outside the car) - Black wing mirrors to match the car's theme (Only had drivers side one before, was a bit of a hack job)

  31. Did the lower ball joint today, had a massive score in that Repco (my usual parts place was out of stock) is running out there home brand versions so I got it for $3.19. Yuss!!! Also pulled the sump off the gearbox, then the filter. It's definitely got some particles in there, it doesn't seem like enough to be causing issues but maybe. The fluid looked pretty red to me, but I've bought some fresh stuff so I'll use that. Pics of particles in filter: Opinions??? Also, this is the dream: Except WA is shit so in the interest of keeping it semi legal this is the more likely dream: Cheers Matt

  38. Hi people, I would like to title this post: The success of rubber and the failure of man. Last trackday at Taupo - I only got a handful of laps and managed a 1:56 which is a new personal best! So I knew the car had some more time in it with a bit more practice. This thursday just gone, I gave it another attempt. With some better lines, I managed to scrub a whole extra second off my time, I was super chuffed with that! One of the differences to last time though, is more negative camber in the front (going from 0, to -2 degrees) So the car was feeling great, the initial turn in was superb. I was feeling suuper confident, doing some kamakaze runs into the sweeper which I overcooked a few times trying to brake too late... And then for the first time at a trackday this happened... Woops! I had a huge lockup, and flat spotted my front left tire down past the tread level. It felt like I was driving on a cube, not ideal. So off I go to the local tire shop. "Hi, do you have any 205/50/15?" "Sorry dont stock these" "wtf? Shit." "Try the place around the corner" Off to the second place, same answer... nothing in stock.... shit shit shit. until... "Oh, I've got some second hand semi slicks though" "Go on" "Two R888s for $60 fitted" "Done deal!!" Frigging amazing! So I get them fitted on the front wheels, then smug face back to the track. After running out of people to smugface to while telling my story, head back out... Very mindful that I'd have a lot more grip up front but still the same out back... So I wound out a bunch of the rear bias. Out on track... Holy shit! Sector times keep tumbling and tumbling, GPS is showing going faster and faster through sectors. Life is good I had a few... err.... incidents while getting used to the different grip level Getting more confident on the brakes... Sector times dropping like crazy... And theeeennnn.... Smoke coming from the front left, brake fluid smell and a knocking noise... shit I hope this isnt the wheel hitting the caliper or something. Back to the pits... I take the wheel off, and all is well. What made that noise and smoke then? Oh... Oh fffs. GNNARRRRR! My first experience with semis, over in about an hour because I noobed the braking again. All smugness instantly erased from my face haha. My fastest lap was only 0.2 seconds quicker than road tires, because it was hard to string a whole lap together without having the rear of the car come loose with the grip imbalance. Regardless, I was absolutely fizzing about how well the car ran. The 8000+ rpm rev limit now has just brought the car alive. I called it a day, and headed back down to the tire shop with my tail between my legs. Feeling like an absolute noob for wrecking the tires they fitted about an hour ago. "So, ahhh... I wrecked one of the tires, my bad. Do you have anything like a 195 or 185 that I could get home on? Just a normal road tire" "Yeah I think we've got some 185s here, same deal as before... $60 fitted" "done deal!" While he was taking the semis off, he said "Oh yep, this one is flat spotted pretty bad! Leave this one with me, and take one of these others so you've still got a good pair" Holy crap, could an experience with a tire shop possibly get any better? So with my car amazingly intact, and a decent pair of second hand R888s in the boot. I head off for another 2 days of tootling around the central North Island, as pictured below. Smashed through a few tanks of gas, with the engine running like an absolute dream. Ran 90% of the time with cruise control on, and enjoyed the scenery. I made it back to Auckland in one peice with no major issues. Best trackday experience ever! Big thanks to Tom / Testament for helping me out over the weekend.
