  1. Recently saved this from being crushed. Its a 1990 Ford Sierra Saphire with a Ford I4 2 liter twincam injected engine and Automatic Transmission. Has been parked up and shed stored for the past 10 to 12 years covering only 129000ks. When i purchased it it started and drove well. The body is rust free and overall very very tidy. Interior is just as nice but hood lining is a little saggy in places. Perfect car to start a project. Unfortunately its been de-registered but this is not much of a drama as it will need to be certified once the modifications are done anyhow. Plans are. Remove the twincam and auto and fit a Ford windsor V8 mated to a W series toyota gearbox. Find a nice set of period wheels, 15 to 16" BBS or similar. Give it a bit of low for some stance. A front brake upgrade of some sort. Maybe some cosworth 4 pots. Thats the basics of it.

  2. Part 2: the mangling. Right, so the spindle pins go in the control arm, through the strut base and back out the control arm. What happens when the pins decide to stay home? We get physical. Then we get angry. then we say "nah stuff it just buy new ones" The trusty Hack saw has been pulled out too many times... Sad face. It took a ten ton press to get that bastard pin out. BUT while the rear was out, we could have some hypothetical fun... tee hee Yeah these are the wheels I am going with. I got some centre-cap stickers too and likey-a-lot BREAK for refreshments...

  3. Discussion thread for pointing & laughing out loud. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/50619-bellicoses-86-hilux-of-thin-air/ Got this a few years ago in a deal. Drove it for a while until i got sick of getting wet feet due to water running onto them from up under the dash. So decided to investigate, and yes......................it got outa hand....pfffft...... As traded...... Had the wrong model deck, so bought a good rust free 4X4 one.......or maybe it's a new spa pool............ Nah, it's a deck. Also bought some very good rust free rear doors. Stripped and primed them for safe storage. Floor issues. Why my feet were getting a little wet. (up under dash) And the other side of those interior shots. Top of centre pillars (double cab) Cab was removed from chassis and stripped bare, turned on it's side to stare in wonder at the skill it took to do this.....pffffft..... And the "worst" B pillar rust after all the 'Metaltech' and bog was removed. How it sits now, although the cab mount plates have been welded back into sills.

  4. Went full ham with a grinder and saber saw, So we now have 14x10 steels under the rear guards that will hopefully get a couple of birdflus semi slicks stretched over them this weekend. Also engine is mounted and have the steel for the rear axle.

  6. I love the idea, for sure, dont get me wrong and it sure does have its up sides, and i see it started as a fun little project for small engines etc etc and it just grew bigger into what it is, and i appreciate that. It's a cool thing for wanting to tinker and thats what this thread is all about, but they could have build something better for similar money. In saying that, i'm opting with putting a toyota 7K in my car when for less money i can buy a 4AGE that makes 3 x the power so i guess i'm all about polishing that turd until it shines like a diamond in a goats ass!

  7. Yes motivation is peaking!! nice to see a car again, nice to be able to walk around the shed without having to move something first. Back window time, Started unfolding the gutter. previous repair left a little to be desired. decided to just cut the whole thing out. there wasn't really much holding the panel in at window frame, the sides are buggered anyway and when I took the donor car apart the spot welds under the vents where right bastards, this must be one of the few area's were the spotwelds could actually be seen on the car, but they are so well finished that they are completely invisible from the top/outside, making drilling them out tricky. sorted. I'll go back and clean up the scrappy bits on the weekend and remove whats left of the window frame. here's the old one with it's replacement. this is the inside, I had thought about just cutting patches out of the new panel and patching the holes, but after seeing this side, I'm glad I've removed it completely. I'm also going to remove the second vent panel that the engine lid hinge's attach to, as there is rust stains running out of there, only time to do it, so might as well! yeah yeah yeah!

  12. It's not as exciting as it looks in fairness. I need an ECU for the starlet, and with the exchange rate, buying a microsquirt is too spendy, so for the price of getting just the loom shipped to my door, i can build a whole ECU. It's based on the FreeEMS stuff Fred wrote/is writing but is pin compatible with microsquirt, so if i ever get sick of it or if my design is rubbish, i can just plug a microsquirt in and use that haha. So same as microsquirt, 2 fuel, 2 spark, 4 spare low side drives. Some analogue inputs, 2 VR/HAL inputs. Has USB on board too, which is the only real difference functionality wise. FreeEMS is definitely not ready for this to be a thing lots of people use. It currently has no good way to tune it, which is the main down side of it all but i'm happy to make do with whats there (for now anyway) for me its as much an exercise in designing the thing as it is having an end product so even if its shit, i'm still happy.

  14. got my trigger wheel back from manufacture today, im sure its old hat to alot of you guys but pretty bloody stoked with my first computer designed part fitting perfectly it will actually sit a little lower than this, but it had a little lip in one spot where the laser started and stopped. no problem with a file (all the edges will need a quick dressing) here you can kinda see the cam profile that it sits over and when on all the way will be flush with if i remember to, ill take it all to work tomorrow and install the sensor and i should be good to go for engine running this weekend!

  16. Fark! This is a labour of love eh? I have a couple of LN106's ... well 1 x LN106 and a LN65. But the LN65 cab was in the same sorta condition your cab looks to be so looking around, I managed to find a good nic single cab 106 cab to replace it. That cab came on a rolling chassis. There are still a heap of these things around the traps in different stages of disrepair. They wreck well too. Sometimes its more economical to buy another one and raid it for parts then selling the rest off to try and recoup some of the cost. This is what I did anyway and I pretty much well ended up getting a free cab when all was said and done. There is a bit of fucking around doing it this way though. You look like you are handy in terms of doing body work - I am not. but yeah ... love those luxers!

  20. I painted the wheels grey and went to Hawkes Boes. Spent about $250 on petrol. Bottomed out big time down SH50 on the way home. Pretty sure the chassis hit the ground. I'd better have a look under there.

  29. this turned up today, its pretty cool, has opening boot and bonnet (with a release!) and the back seat folds down. same 1:43 scale as the 125 model except i dont need to paint it except maybe sign writing on the side the parts wagon (which I should hoefully sort out to arrive next week) has a red interior so it does (or will) match the 1:1 version

  33. Wouldn't it have 16 push sticks with the Windsor? Also I would go get it re-reg'd first with the original engine then do cert later on

  34. Got a second opinion on the hole that needed plugging and now we have a plugged hole (who knows what issues this might solve/prevent). Deep into exams at the moment but the list is getting pretty short: Head back on Engine mounts Clutch Gaskets etc Oil filter Then back in the hole. Got a spot of rust that'll we'll have to attend to before WoF but trying not to think about that at this stage.

  37. Ned you should make a micro for carb guys that does data logging. There is a hole in the market I think, the options around have fuck all inputs and when they do they cost more than a high end engine management. I want to log like 10 analog/digital inputs (wideband, tps, rpm, map, etc) so I can track jetting and timing changes. This kinda thing could also double as a engine warning light when installed permanently so I can ditch the ugly gauges, takes oil pressure/water temp/trains temp and spits a light when they fall out of range. There's nothing like that on the market either (again that doesn't cost 1x moon beam)

  38. Fred? He doesnt like tunerstudio and wants to do his own thing, but that hasnt happened yet. Tuner studio has some limitations etc and apparently isnt unlikely for it to do the wrong thing. I have no idea and dont know anything about that side. The more and more i'm thinking about it, the more and more keen i am to just redo my board for speeduino haha, but a dedicated board, none of this arduino shield stuff. I mean those are the micros i cut my teeth on at work, and know them like the back of my hand so software development would be much easier for me and i could actually tune my car if i changed haha

  44. For the last while I have been trying to sort out the clutch and throttle. I want it to be really simple for the wee fella to drive while he is little, just a go pedal and a stop pedal in one gear only. Then when he is older he can have all five gears and a clutch to play with.... In hind sight I should have gone with a smaller simpler engine. So I have been playing around making a throttle pedal that controls the clutch and the throttle.. I am up to the 4th version, the first three used springs and levers but I just couldnt get it to work with out my son needing Arnold Schwarzeneggers legs. Here it is, I bought a chinese hydraulic clutch set up and made this abomination. I need to tidy it up and strengthen it. It probably belongs in the design disasters and fabrication foibles thread, but eh, it seems to work.

  45. 3.9 diff gears installed in the Supra center. It now reads 101k at 100 instead of 120, and rpm has dropped from around 3300 to 2800 which is excellent, except for feeling a bit laggier in 4-5th
