  1. Brought another car cause I wanna be like Seedy. Wanted one since I was 18 but they never seem to pop up for sale.. this one did so I buyed it. She is a lil bit rusty, mainly the passenger front outrigger and sill. Shes a lil bit ratty, which aint going to change Shes a lil bit been sitting for 10 years, but drivable now I picked it up from Tga a month ago and it sat at the old mans until last weekend when I got a mate to bring it down. The paints a bit rough and a few dents by one guard but its actually relativly straight for its age. I've replaced the master cyl and bleed brakes up and also clutch.. having trouble finding the old 8" lockheed rear cylinders and pads for the drums so might change to escort 8" backing plates which mean the parts are easy to source. Managed to get the 1500 engine going with a bit of a carb clean, blow out old petrol, and replace engine earths, Shes still a bit rough but drivable. Actually drives pretty good considering its sat 10years! Plans are basically to get legal, slam and put some widened steels on. Not wanting a huge project at this stage as I have the rx2 to get back into at some stage, just wanting something OS to enjoy for now. Ive brought the steels just gotta figure out how much to widen to and if I needa change offset or not. I already had a set of 185 55 14s so that made the choice to goto 14s easy. Anyways, pics.

  4. Putting my brand new 13B PP engine that is sitting around doing nothing has crossed my mind, but that's destined for another car. I think I'll own an LS-powered FD one day too, but I doubt I'll do it to this car. Hillclimbs, track days and club events are my preference over the class racing when it comes to the fun:money ratio. I wish I'd known that before I went from doing virtually no events to jumping straight into the Pro7 series. Still, it was a life goal of mine to compete in a sanctioned race series, so at least I've ticked that off.

  6. Another forum member was having a clean out of his shed. He was in need of more space and this motorcycle along with several others had to go. So naturally I took the bike and gave him an old English Stationwagon as payment In my defence, it's wasn't a very big wagon compared to my valiant I would like to eventually register the bike and get it road legal. Standard GP100s have a hideous set of lights and an equally ugly instrument cluster. Oh look! Here's another GP100 in the same neighbourhood which demonstrates what I mean: Eewwww. Especially that brake light, I mean there's a lovely recess for it to sit in under the peak but they obviously thought it was not ugly enough to make production. Here are the standard instruments: And in comparison, the single instrument on mine: Today I fitted a stand return spring from the other bike because this one would drag its stand all over the ground. It hadn't been started in about six months so I thought I'd finally take it for a spin. After running up and down the shed at least a dozen times trying to bump start it, the sweet sounds and smells of 2 stroke goodness filled the air. I may have performed a skid or two just to warm up the narrow rear tyre. My goal is to be able to ride this bike legally on the road. But before then I'd like to get it running properly and tidy up a few bits etc. This isnt really a build thread, more of a 'chipping away it it slowly Trev' kind of deal.

  7. Another small update. Goes for suspension tickle up tomorrow and hopefully a warrant. Finisheded off door strap Replaced the rear doors with some better condition ones. Someone had decided 10kgs of bog was a good rust repair on the other one. Luckily had some in stock Got new carpet and a few other bits this weekend ready to start re doing the rear cabinetry And starting to pretty it up. CHUR

  8. So, last year I went and had a look at a mates 616 he had stored away in his sisters shed for better part of a decade. He bought it cheap, drove it for a small while then pulled it apart and did some work to it. During this period he bought a rx2 and then another rx2 and thus this got neglected. Anyway, deal was done and I became the new owner of a complete (but in bits) rx2 converted 616. This conversion was originally done by the infamous Mazfarm, those that know him know he would have been drunk and distracted by chickens while doing this and therefore did a halfarsed job of it. I'm sure Mutiny has some old pics of it. Plans? well, I'm heading off to 'murica for a while so I've dumped it with bubblegoose. He's going to do some paneling and painting and stuff. It came with almost everything - I had to buy some front seats, rear garnish and a horn pad. everything else seems to be there. it has a rx7 12a and s1 gearbox. engine has been pulled down and checked and ports have been extended. I will most probably add some bridgeported plates into the mix before it goes into the car though. I already had the rays/volk mesh wheels. I bought some SSR MKIII for it and am currently looking for some hotwires to put my eagers on (you can never have too many options!) That's it for now Discussion: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/47513-2nd-child-update-noscos-mazda-616/#entry1484361

I got it home saturday, chucked some fuel in the tank and water in the radiator and it started after a bit of encouraging. Found that the fuel pump was spraying fuel everywhere so now its running on lpg. plans are to fix rust, get a wof with the 202 and drop a 253/308 into it and drive Genuine holden service tool discussion://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/47520-chrisr-ness-hq-wagon/

  14. Long time since last update! Basically been using the ute on the odd occasion over summer, occasionally as a work horse as seen here haha. Pretty happy with it overall. Turns lots of heads, sounds great and goes well enough. Still sorting little issues as I go along but hey, its a 51 year old car! Thought I would post up the scare bird brake conversion that I did recently https://scarebird.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=65 Its a kit from the states that lets you keep the existing stub axles. The guy supply's the part numbers for everything needed to complete the kit, so I bought a lot of the stuff from Rock Auto in the USA real cheap. Brake rotors I got here. All you get in the basic kit is the bracket and 5 stud stub axles. (He does 4 stud if you prefer.) Lots of kits available for all kinds of old cars. Anyway, picture time :

  21. Haha yeah I sort of figured it would but just thought I'd ask . Sealing up the fronts tonight n ill take to get front tyres put on 2m .. Cheers bro yeah from what they were what a difference. If anyones interested this is how I got them to this . they were orginally leaking so thought fuck it I'll get em all cleaned up while they are a part . Rears were tigged onto the Centre So sent them away to get chemically dipped then acid dipped so they return back to what you'd call a "mill" finish. Powerstrip industries limited in penrose are awesome for this they have like a KFC chemical dip that doesn't damage any chrome or nickel so would be perfect for stripping back old panels with chrome on em etc and also doesn't distort or damage the steel either so pretty good.. Got em back looking like this. Also git my bonnet hinges and radiator surround dipped n rust protected ready for a coat of primer. Was 30 bucks per rim and $10 bucks per kg to get anything chemically dipped n acid. From there they went to Dropped em off to braids n Whyte very reasonable priced . 40 bucks per rim to go metallic gun metal grey . 20 bucks per application so 20 for the grey powdercoating and 20 bucks for a crystal clear coat over top 3 day turn around. Came back mint. The lips were being polished at the time by progressive electro players n polishers in new lyn .. I took em the rears to remove the powdercoating n polish the outside lips as you'll see em with the tyres I'm using . Rear wheels Fronts

  23. Different strokes for different folks with bikes. I rock mine standard, cos it's my daily transport and don't want it off the road and I like that plush seat on my ass (that, and I'm too slack/lazy/lacking in confidence to chop it up. Others (eg LOW'N'SLOW) whack out sweet customs in short time frames and still daily them, which is awesome. Joe/Goat dailys a GP125 that tents my shorts when I see it as well (partially cos he's riding it).

  25. Tried for a Wof for the third time this afternoon and came soooooooo close to getting it. Everything we were worried about - the rims/flares, the bearing, cv boots - passed with flying colours. They pulled us up because one of the rear right door hinges has detached from the door, it cracked next to the weld and is floating. We hardly use the back doors so were pretty surprised. Should be a quick trip to the panel beaters. LEFT photo is what it should look like, RIGHT photo is what it does look like.

  26. aluminium handrail tube? use old bearing races or taper pins or turn up some bar stock into a taper whatever you have in a press to flare the ends
    1 point
  27. In that case- I won't rip shit out of you for trying haha. You could try find someone to press the runners to shape out of tube? Your main problem will be finding trumpets of the right length and tube diameter etc..heaps of variables for you to figure out. Why not use the factory plenum base and just weld a new top on?

  33. So, this thread has been very quiet, as I try to live by the phrase "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". To summarise the last 12 months with too many words and not enough pictures: I spent a lot of money on the car and got myself sorted out fairly well in advance, with the hope of being up the front end of the Pro7 Plus class for the 2014/2015 season. Super ridiculously lightweight flywheel (my engine is the one in the middle): My engine builder let me down at a crucial phase of the rebuild when he decided to head overseas for a month at the time I was booked in to have the car finished, tuned and tested. The original engine builder who I wanted to use (but was well booked out in advance) came to the rescue and helped slot me in with another business who did a great job of getting me to the first round of the Mazda Pro7 Racing Series. They were already flat out with other jobs but squeezed me in and got the car running and tuned, but I didn't have any time for testing and refinement. Sexy, lightweight, freeflowing exhaust that is a million times better than the first attempt: The new exhaust sits closer to the trans tunnel and is hotter due to the stainless steel, resulting in melted footrests, shoes and legs. No more cruising for chicks at the Mount while wearing shorts in summer: The old pod filter was simply mounted on the end of the factory intake pipe, which sucked warm air from behind the radiator. The kickass new airbox divides copious amounts of air horizontally to the air filter and radiator: Round 1 at Taupo was the first time the new engine had been used, other than the time it spent on the dyno a day or so before. There was a noticeable increase in power, but my lap times didn't improve as I struggled with the new suspension setup, and the engine really needs to be run in properly and re-tuned for best results. The car handled perfectly before the 'upgrade', but I had to spend approximately $3500 on the custom Koni/Kings suspension that all Pro7 Plus cars must run to suit the class regulations. I had a minor altercation with one of the RX-8s which got in front of me, resulting in a little bit of front end damage and a fairly heated argument in the pits afterwards. After reviewing my in-car footage and showing it to the other driver, he apologised and admitted that he didn't know that I was passing him on the inside of the corner, and joked(?) that he doesn't use his mirrors. Choice. Round 2 was at Manfeild and was pretty much a repeat of Taupo, except I finally discovered why I couldn't set the car up how it was previously. From the moment I saw my new suspension a few months before, I wondered why there was such a big difference in the size (length) of the new stuff versus my trusty old Tein suspension. Dad and I discussed it but decided not to question it as all the Pro7 Plus cars are supplied with identical suspension from our class sponsors, who have decades of experience. I even mentioned it to a couple of guys at Taupo, but again we dismissed the idea and decided that it must be something to do with further refinement of the camber, tow, caster and damper settings. It turns out that I was in fact supplied with the wrong length springs- so it was riding way too high and was impossible to get the correct alignment. Since I was about 5 hours from home, the only thing I could really do was put up with it for the weekend and sort it out by the next round. Lap times were again slower than my previous times with my old (poked) engine, and even my straightline speed down the long straights of Manfeild were affected due to the slow exit speeds on the corners. 1 degree of camber compared to the old setup of 3-4 degrees makes a massive difference to the front end grip. Once again I had a run-in with an RX-8 - a different one this time - but the exact same scenario where I was passing on the inside and the other car turned in on me. I was far enough ahead with plenty of track width initially to perform a legal move, but the other driver had no idea I was there. Again, terse words in the pits afterwards, followed by an apology once the in-car camera footage showed fact rather than emotion. Frustrated at my performance and lack of results, I pushed a little too hard during the 2nd race and made a silly error, going off the end of one of the long straights. I was a safe distance away from the other Pro7 Plus cars ahead and there was no damage, so I was able to rejoin the circuit immediately - right behind my buddies in the RX-8s. I chopped through the first few quickly but again made another silly error. Braking hard into the last corner with an RX-8 ahead of me, my plan was to pull my car up right behind his and dive through the inside as it is nice and wide if you do it right. I hit the brakes and did exactly as I'd planned and began to turn in and take advantage of the big inside gape. Unfortunately I misjudged just how much slower the RX-8s are (especially the older fella who drives this particular one) with braking and cornering, and I gave him a very light tap on his rear bumper before following through. I was actually pretty relieved that it felt like a gentle nudge at first, but when I looked in my rear view mirror a few seconds later, I felt really bad as I saw him spinning out, albeit a fair distance from the point where we'd made contact. I assumed I'd upset the balance of his car as he was on the limits of cornering, and that he must have done his best to gather it up, but fishtailed down the tarmac and eventually failed. We all finished the race, and it was clear that he was in no mood to talk about the incident or accept my apology as he marched off to put in a complaint with the Clark of the Course. To cut a long story short, he put in a formal complaint against me and another RX-8 driver, and it turns out it wasn't me who spun him out after-all. The other RX-8 driver also tried to take advantage of the passing manoeuvre and gave him a decent shunt in the process. Unfortunately the final conclusion that I was solely at fault as I started the chain reaction, and I copped a $$$ fine, had 20 seconds added to my race time, and had my licence clipped. I freely admit that I made a mistake, but I felt that the punishment was a bit harsh, and it certainly felt like a kick in the teeth after everything else that has been going wrong. It was made clear at the start of the weekend though that the stewards were going to come down hard on anyone who misbehaved, and from what I can tell I was the only one who gave them an opportunity to show they weren't kidding around. Race 3 was uneventful thankfully, so I promptly packaged up my gear, loaded the RX-7 onto the trailer and said my goodbyes so I could end what was a rather unenjoyable weekend as soon as possible. Due to a lack of time and funds, I decided to skip Rounds 3 and 4 since I had no chance of being near the top of the points for this season. I was still recovering from some major expenses last year (this car, my random Mazda Cosmo purchase, and a wedding/honeymoon), and I wasn't enjoying the racing either, to be honest. Last Thursday I took my car to the Oldschool track day at Hampton Downs, and I was really looking forward to seeing how the car had improved after I put the new (correct) suspension in and had my old settings dialled in by the guys at K Drive Tyre and Battery (pictured above - that ain't me, BTW). After warming the car up and putting my foot to the floor for the first time, I immediately noticed a lack of power compared to the last time I drove it, and it felt even slower than my old smokey engine that had virtually no oil selas left in it. The car started fine both hot and cold, ran and idled fine, and sounded good, but there was definitely something wrong. Kyteler timed me as I took him for some hotlaps, and my best time was 1:19.6, which is 1.3 seconds slower than my previous best. Since lap times were irrelevant for the track day, I decided to carry on and take a few more people for rides (64valiant, Mikuni, bigfoot, etc), as I really enjoy giving others the opportunity to go for a ride in a race car, even if it's a bit slow. It also gave me an opportunity to put some decent run-in kays on it before I took it in for a retune. It turns out this wasn't the smartest idea, as I discovered this morning when I took my car in for a check up and dynotune. My fears were confirmed as a compression test revealed a lowly 30psi on the rear rotor, due to the 'unbreakable' apex seals doing their best impersonations of a banana. There are a couple of potential reasons for this and I'll know more when I strip the engine down in the next few weeks. A 'tuner blaming the builder' and vice versa scenario has already arisen, but I'd rather not get into those details. So that ends my lacklustre Mazda Pro7 Racing season prematurely, and I have some thinking to do once again over the next few months. On the bright side, I've got a couple of extra weekends freed up now, and I've saved myself about $2000 by missing the last 2 rounds.

  36. I moved this into a better position in Ben's Shed and while I was there mucking about with some other cars I grabbed another picture or two of the van to prove that I still have it: It's now facing a much better angle to allow me to slip in the motor and gearbox. The chassis that was pictured in the first post met its demise a while back. I removed everything that I thought was worth removing; rear axle assembly and Cheviot Turbos, fuel tank, V8 swaybar and links, steering box, V8 engine, gearbox crossmember and towbar. The rest was cut into pieces and scrapped. I'd usually feel bad about that but it was saved from being crushed while it still had all of its running gear. So it was essentially already dead. Well at least that makes it easier to justify in my head.

  37. I'm not 100% on this, but... Front brake wise: There's a 270x22mm rotor which is standard on early Commodores through out. Which fit under a 14in wheel And then a 290x22mm rotor as found on VL turbo Commodores and VN V8 (also 6's that run fe2 suspension) after which run the finned callipers which require a 15 in wheel
    1 point
  38. Yes, you're correct with that observation regarding the use of the same brakes pads on the rear of Commodores for the best part of two decades. But the problem may arise when it comes to the larger front brakes. Also it does this old fella's heart good to see you out mucking around with this Commodore and getting stuff done. Keep up the motivation!

  39. So it was going but with a loud bang at track day while Jenn was doing laps it never made Nationals . The engine and whole front end came out this weekend. A very big thanks to Doug. The new engine is painted gear box attached . Just need to get a new ball joint and front disks machined this week goal is to have it running by end of week this week but that is very hope full ( on a very standard spec and ready for sale ) When the engine came out the headers are near on rubbish now "105 speed" not sure about them but they have so many cracks and breaks they are now beyond repair In my option they are for show cars only that never get driven Your thoughts guys??? And this is where I'm up to at current. Replacement front end half way there should be going in very soon

Thankfully the items description was right as she was in near perfect condition. Bit of a laugh, found some real, "she'll be right" stuff under the pinion bearing haha. Few hours later had the backlash set correctly just a bit iffy with the tooth contact, will have to grab some engineers blue next week to double check. Other than that she's mint! So anyone after a Locked small spline diff? Mint condition, one lady owner.

There was a heap of other sweet Sedans there and it is honor to get the award. After driving the hell out of the car here is how it sits in the garage.

They got pretty close with the turbo position here, from a few photos and measurements I sent them. But it needs some changes. I also put the don mega 1g in Turbo sits too close to the head and distributor Heaps of room for the down pipe One T3 flange width out put the turbo in a good position Got a radiator. Cut the wings off Trimmed some of the top rad support away. I was hoping to drop it down a bit further so it would tuck in under the lip but that will require more cutting. Top hose will need some tight radius bends and new flange from thermostat Also got a set of coilovers from MRP along with there RCA's. front springs changed from 8kg to 10kg All is not well though as i'm still having issues with the POS hilux diff. Cant even put these bad boys ^ in the back because of the mounts being on kook angles. Over and Out
