  1. Went to Nats. Drove a grand total of 857 trouble-free km over three days using much less fuel than I thought, which was nice. Let's do it all again soon. Springs have more or less settled - firmed up the front dampers for the trip away, though I had to soften it one click in the rear after discovering the back felt a bit too skittish when hitting mid-corner bumps (while trying to keep up with Spencer piloting sheepers' V8 Celica on the way to Waihi). Otherwise it grips well and absolutely flies. The beauty of the rotary engine is that it's so smooth and builds momentum in such a linear fashion that you can keep winding the revs out and the car just slingshots itself around corners. Still needs the wheel alignment sorted as it doesn't track too well in a straight line, but I'll get onto this ASAP. The exhaust stayed in one piece and sounded absolutely mint echoing through the Coromandel hills... there is nothing quite like the unique buzz of a turbo rotary on song above 4000rpm. Most of the odd surging and performance issues seem to have disappeared now that the exhaust has been opened up for better flow, but I'll continue to try improving some of the niggly drivability things. If anything, all of the low-rpm pops and bangs and occasional lumpy/brappy sounds give it more character with the new exhaust, whereas before with the stock exhaust they were just plain annoying - quite possibly because there were no audio cues to work out exactly what was going on. As an added bonus - picked this little thing up on Sunday night at prizegiving: An unexpected surprise after all the ups and downs! Thanks to all who deemed it worthy of Best Coupe this year. 5. It's been a productive last 3 days - will let the pic's show progress.. Really happy with the natural lighting in the shed. These pic's were taken at about 4:30pm.. The shed makes my new toy look little!.. Just gotta order the flashings now & I'll get the builder back to do this & the guttering then she's all done bar the electrical & stormwater tank. Hoping to paint the floors in the next week or so as well, and then I can start setting it all up to make a start on the new HQ...good times!

  6. Pulled off all the junk off the back and put the front back on, so we can start to C-notch the rear end. Took out the diff to see how low it can go and to get some measurements. Can still go a little lower in the rear. Needs about a 7 inch C-notch. 5 inch will be sticking through the deck, which is a bit annoying. Time to make up some cad drawings so it can get laser cut at work.

  7. So people talked me into this, and i need the advice (clueless). Noticed the following for really old crap is small on here (sure there are forums for this but they don't need to obey NZ road regulations and those that do are esoteric to me) but there is some people into it so... So after buying piles and piles of rusty parts at swapmeets i decided i want to build a car. End goal would be something like this pictured. But i lack enough V8 parts yet and for some reason the NZTA type people make you register them as a 'replica' with stoplights, window wipers and seatbelts, stuff i don't want or I'd go buy a modern one. So how do i get around that? Register it as an original, but then i have to use original parts when getting VIN right? OK, first incarnation can look different and i change it later right? Changing it being swap body onto V8 chassis and return existing chassis to stock and resell it. (not sure if this reasoning is correct...) There, that one looks cool. Would be keen to replicate that look. Just so happens the chassis parts were cheap or free at a swapmeet last weekend because nobody wants them, body parts are expensive though. So how to lower? Because 2 feet of ground clearance apparently isn't cool these days. Think these are called Z shackles. Is this legal to do in NZ? If so i might do that. Problem is i would have to move the spring from rear crossmember to another new one installed a few inches further ahead. And rules around that? Is bolt in or riveted acceptable? Alternative is to move spring forward and put crushtube? (anticrush tube?) in radius rod and the bolt spring hanger in it. Small problem is the chassis i have has steel plates riveted inside the rails along its length, fishplating, not surprised considering how much they flexed back in the day. Is this going to need a cert or can a friendly inspector ignore/sign off as satisfactory? Then there is the front radius rods. If i lower it using the Z shackle style depicted above i would need to extend them. Then there is this bracket which does not need Z shackles or extended radius rods. This would work but i don't know if it is legal to fab one from steel (Xray testing?) or have a pair cast somewhere, although cast would be kinda awesome, what is the regulations around cast one-off parts? Or replace entirely with later model ones, with welded on brackets, i can't see this being a piece of cake to cert' though. Also wanting to move the body back about 2.25 inches to gain clearance for using studs to hold the head onto the block (and maybe aftermarket cylinder head). If it is only lowered and body moved a little i won't have to pass the 5 cycle brake test (or whatever it is) thing or anything will i? Pretty sure the 2 wheel brakes would never ever pass that. So what parts do i have so far? A rusty body with missing subrails. Is it legal to repair this with box tubing with the bottom cut out of the tubing? Or even tubing left intact? This is the only place the body brackets would be a problem if i moved the body backwards 2 inches. Fortunately this area needs repair and the bracket is riveted to the subframe and the rivets look crap, there is only one bracket, the other is missing so i can rivet it on further forwards when i install one. Would this need a repair cert' or would an inspector kindly overlook that it was moved? Don't know the regulations about this myself... This picture shows the frame rails with the bracket to the firewall. Is it acceptable to redrill the holes in the frame back 2 inches or should i use spacer blocks? New holes would be better. Also visible is the rivets for the fish plating. This is a rusty wishbone in case i had to split it, didn't want to split the one that came with the chassis, its like, 90 years old and still in good shape, this one is rusty, might have too deep pitting for a cert'? Then there is the rear ones, options include repairing or replacing with a new tube with a kink in it (for the correct geometry) and a crush tube for the spring mount. Can only guess there was water in the tube and it froze and burst? So yeah, am i on completely the wrong track here? Lost my mind? (think that happened last year) or is this a good idea? Better make a discussion thread as per forum board rules so you can tell me which is best for VIN/cert'/tell me i lost my mind and to give up already. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/47381-rustiz-1920-26-ford-t-bucket-of-rust-discussion/

  9. One of the best driving experiences was driving my car behind this. Tairua to Coroglen. No fucks were given. Hammer down. Ed also offered me the keys and I drove the RX7 from Wangamata to Tairua. This thing drives soooo nice. Well done on sorting a sweet sweet car. I had a hard time not blipping the throttle on every gear change, due to the rad noises it makes. Power delivery is silky smooth. No lag on acceleration, just a linear power curve that keeps going. Handling is spot on. Not to hard and definitely not soft. Firm and planted is how it feels. Just like a sportscar should. White 80's Turbos for lyfe. ps. please find that annoying 'your going over 100kph' bell and burn it.

  10. SHOCKING NEWS I actually did something cool with my car apart from making it draw stupid graphs! This week's weekend started on Thursday, at Hampton. Like so: I managed a new best laptime of 1.24.0 which is a 2.7 second increase over last time. Mainly thanks to bravery on the brakes and learning the lines a bit better. It's still having trigger related problems which gives it an early rev cut which is a pain in the ass (Randomly cuts at 6000-8000rpm depending on when it decides to play up) However I've now got a proper trigger wheel to swap over to now. I also had the wideband cut out a bit, which I suspect is because it gets very hot. Possibly because of the exhaust wrap? But it seems to be a common-ish problem, and making a brass heat sink usually fixes it apparently. Kyteler was spectating and noticed that when I hit the brakes, the rear of the car lifts UP. After thinking about this, it's the same 4 link angle problem that gives me shitty traction off the line, and is fixable with revised 4 link geometry. So I need to stop procrastinating on that one, as I've known about the problem (and the fix) for a few years haha. After trackday, I drove it about 650kms around the Coromandel for Nats, and didnt have any issues either. So super happy with that! Car's now safely back at home, awaiting the next round of pulling it to bits and wondering why I pulled it to bits.

  11. Been making some progress / spending money The start of the turbo manifold. Not my work... Getting a certain company from Hamilton to do it. They got pretty close with the turbo position here, from a few photos and measurements I sent them. But it needs some changes. I also put the don mega 1g in Turbo sits too close to the head and distributor Heaps of room for the down pipe One T3 flange width out put the turbo in a good position Got a radiator. Cut the wings off Trimmed some of the top rad support away. I was hoping to drop it down a bit further so it would tuck in under the lip but that will require more cutting. Top hose will need some tight radius bends and new flange from thermostat Also got a set of coilovers from MRP along with there RCA's. front springs changed from 8kg to 10kg All is not well though as i'm still having issues with the POS hilux diff. Cant even put these bad boys ^ in the back because of the mounts being on kook angles. Over and Out

  13. Shit yeah. I loved just winding the hell out of it, diving into corners, blipping the throttle between gearchanges, making all of the grumpy part-throttle noises, and hearing that sweet 'tang buzz ricocheting off the hills. Sometimes the experience of driving a car encompasses more than simply going as fast as you can! Compared to something like Jono's Sigma (which I also drove over the weekend), I still marvel at how markedly different the power delivery is compared to a piston engine. Reckon the triangle might keep up with the Mustang if it had an extend port, huge turbo, Link and about 20 pounds more boost As mentioned, Jono/Denham and Greer/myself had a sweet fang between Tairua and Coroglen after dirt skids, it was the most epic hammer down battle of the white '80s turbo Jap steeds. Dude in that S14 Silvia was loving it as well. Would have loved to have handed the keys over to someone else and passengered for a bit. Perhaps next time!

  15. O blue Rover arise Scatter her enemies And make them fall Send her victorious Speedy and glorious In thee our hopes we trust - God save us all. This thing turned 30 parked up in my garage and nobody came to pay their respects. Today a delay in repairs to my Alfa meant I'll be missing some of Nats, and I scared myself by pulling the SD1 out, washing it and cleaning some of its mould (the interior mould which the evil car sickened me with over New Years). I need my Alfa finished so I do not have to trailer this to WOF-less whale to Nats, because the trailering part would not be fun at all. Back to your garage, bringer of pain.

  16. Howdy all So as some of you know I sold all projects last year( apart from a bike I'm building) and to be honest I wasn't really looking for a he project. Anyway a mate rang me to ask if I know of anyone wanting a mk2 Tina.......I asked around and no takers........so fucking bang it turned up on Wednesday..... Even drove it of the truck So its 1970 ( I think) mk2 cortina 1600 super. Pretty much the least amount of rust in a ford shell I've bought in the past 8 years....even the ciggy lighter worked. Sat in a shed since 1988 So I stripped it down and cleaned the years off it Got up Saturday stripped the rest of the running gear and made a spit . mounted it to start on the underside And that's as it sits at the moment

  17. Back of the door skin along the bottom wrapped over the frame, was very happy to see this go on and line up so well. Before it was squashed together and welded. The drivers rear door was more or less the same, but instead i made the door skin in two patches to help keep the strength in the skin Patch to the bottom corner door frame Inside corner of the door with the new door skin patch. Much better. Should be good for a few more years. The door had a high spot/was a bit warped before i started so i ended up slitting the door skin and pulling it together nice and tight Door on van Have 2 pot primed it and will pour some sealant stuff throughout the doors soon.

  18. New turbo setup has been so lush so far, and most importantly, it hasn't fallen off! The boost control is a bit vague due to the funky angle the actuator has to work on but I'll correct it one day. I've whipped some new shocks in the front and tightened up the steering box which has improved the handling soooo much! It no longer smashes into the road and now has semi-responsive turn in. Woo! The exhaust has had a bit of work recently, the old flexy was ripped to bits and in a bit of the wrong place So I chopped it out and wacked a new one in further up the line, so the downpipe now hits the road post flexy and doesn't put all the stress on the turbo As I've since found out it's now high enough to barely scrape. Although.. There was once an exhaust hanger there, but that fucked off somewhere in the Coromandel. The zorst then took a pounding Lols. So I patched it up And hung it up Heeeeaps more betterer mayte. Still heaps to do but highest priority right now is a manual box. So till next time, here's a lush as fuck view from the trip home from Wagnats

  29. Couple weeks ago I decided to get my wheels tidied up .. got em back yesterday really happy with how they are now to seal em up n chuck em on car .. Tires r a good fit lol centre's were tigged to the rear lips had em chemically dipped n acid dipped to clean em all up Even took radiator surround and bonnet hinges to be dipped. Centre's went off to powdercoaters . Used Brian n Whyte in kingsland nice guys and really well priced . 40 bucks per rim to go metallic gun metal grey and then clearcoated. Front bands I took to progressive electroplaters n polishers in new lynn travis is the guy to see he's awesome. Here's finished product . What a difference the bands are they are like mirrors now. 35. NATS OR BUST. New ZOOM springs, in. Then we started on the exhaust system. It's 2.5" mandrel bent from the downpipe back, with two mufflers and an oldboy-spec twin tip at the rear for that nice standard look. Woo-er, the 45mm ID stock exhaust is definitely not helping things. Stock downpipe is nicely sized though - 50mm. First section off the downpipe tacked together. The mantra here is "rotaries need to breathe." Shiny rear tip. Here's what we pulled out of the car, all of this garbage weighs an absolute ton. This is Yuck! 38. yep so she's back on the road, little bit of an update eh. - a bunch of rust needed doing, plenty more to go. sills etc. - front short shocks, Ultima, from online auto parts aussie site - had some standard KYBs floating around for the rear. glad i didnt cut the original shock mounts out during the hydro process! - whiteline swaybar and bushes, as above - new spring packs care of Archers springs, Rotorua. - thermostat, first time in years - fan shroud, first time ever - went back to the muzzy rims with some maxxis 175/70 14 biccies - new rear brake lines - super-drone side exit exhaust managed to stay, yeah! it drags round left handers under the right circumstances - stoked. - cleaned all the paint off the front end trim. fuck it drives so sweet now (for what it is), best it ever has. still a bunch of niggles but pretty happy with it. the new springs are great but came down a whole bunch during the trip to Wagnats. a little unusual for new ones. anyway, just got them back from HG Inghams blacksmiths in the Hutt. i dropped off the springs and my old main leaves on monday, by tuesday's end i had them back in the car with the old main leaf added to the pack, and all reset to suit. will get it out for a drive tonight but from standing on the towbar the car is noticeably stiffer, and only sits a half inch higher at the back, unloaded. loading up a bunch of shit and a Hemi2doz in the front and driving it for a week/nats should be a good test!
