  2. So this happened: Long story short, I took it for a WOF, and it failed on excessive steering play, which turned out to be a worn bush (which is better than a fucked rack or tierod end, I suppose). While it was in the workshop we noticed a weird squealing/chuffing noise from one of the belts, so I got Karl to inspect further. What he found next will shock you! Nah not really. But he did discover that the cambelt was really old and perished, and chunks were flaking off it - and the waterpump seals have started weeping - even though it had been changed at 90,000km (less than 20,000km ago). We're guessing that it was done maybe 10 years ago and the car simply hasn't been driven a lot in Japan, then I got hold of it and drove to Nats 2016 and around the country like a lunatic. Ha! So with that in mind, out the hole it goes for another new cambelt, tensioner, seals, waterpump, belts, blah blah blah. I'm slightly disappointed that I haven't even had a chance to stockpile more upgrade parts yet, because I was so confident that it wouldn't need any serious work done for another 50-60,000km and I had ages to collect more shit for it. At least I will now be able to fit the shiny extractors I bought a while back, but it would have been nice to throw in an upgraded supercharger pulley, LSD box, and rear swaybar at the same time. 4. Finished the last of the ply yesterday and screwed the rest off, can't see this house moving much in a quake, so many layers.. Paints all finished thanks again to family, then I fucked around in the afternoon clearing everything for the sander, Fillets came up great, I then had a crack at the bathroom vanity, Cut a hole.. goddam oaks hard, chewed a blade or half way through. Also smells remarkably similar to Rimu which also fucks metal things.. Trial fit, had to enlarge the hole slightly with a 40g flap disc still just burns it off.. Two more hole for the taps, And voilĂ .. not to shabby, Just need to adjust the drawers somewhat.. Sanded the top back a bit as it was a little messy and the two halves of the top didn't really line up properly, not sure whether to oil it or put it back like it was. Checked on the floor sanding progress today, guy doesn't fuck around.. floors all leveled with the filler on already.. also bought some carpet this evening, shit isn't cheap, 6k between the floors and carpet! Should look ok tho..

  5. Are you sure it wasn't tyre smoke? I heard Stellars go hard for what they are.

  6. Six months of wof all used up. Had a good four months use out of it. Had next to zero issues in that time. I had to swap out fuel filter when it starting running like a bag of dicks after getting fuel in Hahei and had some tyres fitted in Auckland after the tread disappeared. That's it! According to the speedo I've put 6000kms on it in that time (I'd say it's closer to 5000 though). I took it to Leadfoot and then to Rotary Reunion in February. At some stage soon I'll put some new shocks in the front and lose some height. I've got some clips sitting in Sydney to put the sill trims on and yeah I'm fairly happy with it currently. Pics Courtesy of Snoozin Courtesy of MichaelJFox And a pic of the daily cos it's too new and boring for a thread. 7. I was waiting for the long weekend to cross some bigger jobs off the list and managed to! - Put good dash pad in - Cleaned and painted instrument cluster - Cleaned and rust killed floors and etch painted, sealed up screw holes and seams, rubber bungs in - Cleaned and painted glovebox hinge panel (left as much as I could of the factory sticker with key info and tyre pressure/fuel chart) - Made covers for the rear wheel arches, lower B pillars and exposed parts of the floor the carpet does not cover with some patterned plastic sheet - Painted dash top and the area under the rear screen which are visible. - New carpets - Vinyl died seats. Don't know how long it will last but we will see. The cans sprayed too narrow so I emptied them into spray gun and got a great even application. - Put stereo in properly - Epoxy glued splits in the centre console - Factory accelator pedal back on Still need to make a shifter boot and pick up another demister vent from a mate.

  8. So i had some issue with the car intermittently dying. I traced it to the PTU (Coil igniter) which from what I have read on line can be a pain in the ass as they supposedly fail quite often. I have a few spares lying around so switched out the one that was causing the problem. Lots of guys online relocate off the engine to a location with less heat and vibration so I did the same. Was just a simple job or extending some wiring and making a quick bracket to mount it. I decide to put it up in the nose as there is plenty of room and its easy to get at. Next up was the front bumper. The lower lip in my bumper was badly cracked and pretty worse for wear. I picked up a fiberglass front lip to try and tidy things up a bit. I used a strong flexible glue to bond the lip to the factory bumper, there was lots of trimming to the old lip to get the new part to fit. Screws helped hold the lip in place while the glue went off The F/G lip was obviously designed for a TT bumper not my NA one so it was too long, I had to cut around 25mm from each end and then re fiberglass new ends to get it to fit ok. Once the glue was hardened i used expanding foam to add some strength between what was left of the old lip and the new F/G one. It looks like a disaster before I trimmed away the excess, the foam makes things a lot more rigid. Then was a case of sanding. priming and painting. I have just used satin black at this stage as the whole bumper needs a respray in the future. Turned out OK. I added some steel brackets to mount the front of the lip back to the body, it is held on pretty well now. Fun times...

  9. I bled the power steer and put another few liters of fuel in and it fired up. Sorted the universal for the steering column at the same time. I've done a few things that weren't on the list but thats fine.

  24. Here you go, not sure if this is for an Australian or NZ car but maybe it will be useful to both of you. I know at some stage they went to a full electronic distributor (no vac advance) so this diagram will not be applicable to all models. Bronze, maybe you can start a thread in the tech section as I am sure members on here will be able to assist you with your LPG de-conversion.

  26. Just a small update. Been putting the car back together. Gave all the windows a good clean, got them looking crystal clear. They did have tints on them but they were quite rough, so decided to pull them off and clean up the glass. Also been doing more upholstery, almost completed the seats, but ran out of material and thread. I tried covering the dash in vinyl but gave up. Iv glued up the cracks and put a textured finish on it, and then painted it, its come up good.

  27. Holset recore went in quite a few months ago and has been going strong. Car is running about 17psi constantly with no issues. Whipped a wideband on it for an afternoon and its running nice and rich still. Who says you need a Link? Power is good now, pretty happy with it, if it stays reliable then even better. Next on the list is rebushing the rear subframe and some wheel bearings. Probably need to get onto some minor rust work sometime soon. No new pics soz.

  28. Done the floor patch, just need to do the bit up the side and then there's a few little patches of rust, where the top of the guards bolt to the cab on both sides and a pin hole in the rear cab corner. That'll hopefully be all the rust in the cab done, then I can start on the transmission tunnel.

  30. So this happened today... That's gonna slow progress a bit. A bit pissed off cos wife and kids away and thought I'd have a real good run in the shed. A few weeks in a cast unfortunately (again)... [edit for reason] Punched something I shouldn't have (not angry - clumsy)... ooh just noticed I can see the metal splinter in my index fingie I picked up the other day. Should have got them to dig it out...

  38. had a busy week and weekend, got the first couple coats of red on the car.did the bottom and the inside and dash area, pretty pleased with it, did one coat on saturday, missed a couple spots, worst thing that happened was sweat running out of my glove on the wet paint, bugger it! gave it a wipe with thinners and it came really nice on the second coat today. Got a few small runs but stoked with it. not bad for a rookie!

  39. Most 3 phase VSD/VFD's out there will run with only a single phase input (however, you need to de-rate them to about half their stated power) and output a happy three phase for your motorvation needs.

  40. Got some more thinners and got the front under bonnet/boot painted next.tried to get a good coverage on everything.over the years many stone chips had done a number on the paint under the arches.one more wire wheel dead.had a crack at heat shrinking some of the mess I'd made of the front quarter, worked a wee bit, stopped it popping in and out so easy.bog time!I spent Monday, Tuesday and Wendnesday night last week from about 9pm once the kids were sorted and the next day organized, sanding, sanding and sanding till about 1 or 2 am.And finally on Thursday night.a bit of etch.followed by...just the engine bay and the front valance to prime.but that will have to wait till it's off the spit as I still need to spot weld the bonnet seal strip on both valances as the frame it's bolted to is in the way.still needs heaps of work, found a few dips and bumps after the paint went on, needs lots of sandpaper marks filled in/sanded out, but I should be able to do the seam sealing and smash some red on the bum soon!

  41. Been super busy with house stuff but decent day today and was out in the shed at sparrows again. Started with the headlight bits and pieces, went together ok once I deciphered how all the screws/clips went... And put some new engine bay decals on, was going to wait and do this last, but couldn't... And put the lid back on... I'd been putting off sanding back the grille cos I thought it'd be a prick of a job. It was. All bloody angles and sharp edges, cut my hands to bits cleaning up the half-arsed job I did last time... But got there, shiny metal... And used the backyard whirlygig thing as a spray booth Got a good etch coat base on... And look... Shot down the bottly in it's dusty, half done state. Was a good feeling, and I may have dropped a decent old skid on the way back...

  42. Kids birthday over the weekend so after putting up with half a dozen yelling 7yr old girls on a sleepover (why are they always shouting?) I sought refuge in the shed. Goodbye blue rocker covers... The cork gaskets had stuck fairly well in the short time they'd been on, but popped off ok, and it looked clean enough inside... Apart from a few little bits of black goo. Whatever it was was soft - hoping this is assembly lube remnants...? And side 1 done/new PCV valve installed... Doesn't look too bad I suppose, the big blue frying pan dominates things... And a bit of tidying up to do yet. waiting on black lead clamps and new breather cap in the mail...

  44. Obligatory service time. Now that I've clocked up a few hundred km I've noticed the occasional misfire and general lack of oomph below 3000rpm, especially when loading it up in the lower gears. This is usually where you discover certain things about the previous owner(s); for example the bloke who owned this particular AW11 wasn't much of a stickler for replacing ignition-related components, even though he seemed to change the oil and coolant regularly (and the paper air filter that I replaced with a K&N was fairly new). First indication of this was the state of the spark plugs. Honourable previous-owner-san, what even is this?! From the way the bodies and electrodes look it's probably about time they were replaced even if they are considered "long-life" iridiums. I suppose it didn't help that when the car underwent fumigation and steam cleaning in NZ the spark plug valley filled up with water - as you'll notice a few photos down, the cover is missing - John did mention it was running like a bag of shit when it was first dropped off to compliance, but he managed to clean it out. A new set of iridium plugs has now been fitted, you can just see the box in the background. Should I be worried about the shit on the threads? Second indication that the dude was behind in his servicing schedule, off came the dizzy cap and uhhhhh... Let's compare old versus new. It would seem this is the original dizzy cap, as the two top posts (for cylinders 3 and 4) were worn down almost beyond the point of recognition (yes they are a slightly different design from the Bosch replacement). Hmmm, guess that could explain the misfire under load! The last few photos demonstrate how much of a pain in the arse it is to work on a mid-engined car sometimes. My worklight blew up, so I had to use the desk lamp from my soldering station instead. Not visible in the shot: the old rim I was using as a stepladder... To reach the dizzy cap you have to fold your upper body around the drivers' side C-pillar and lean right over the engine. (If this were a front-engined AE82 FX-GT or even an AE86, access would be trivial.) There's just barely enough room to get a small ratchet in between the firewall and dizzy cap to tighten up the bolts. Someone with larger hands is gonna have a bad time. You also have to be careful not to snap off the plug on the very right, or it's game over. All done... I just need to track down a 4A-GZE valley cover now. To the previous owner's credit, he did replace the ignition leads with those chunky SplitFire things. Or perhaps it was the dealer he sold it to who fitted them? Nearly at that magical 100,000km milestone. Good news, the misfire is gone, and there's a lot more pull from down low. I need to bleed the clutch next, those who have driven the car all remark it feels a bit spongy from lack of use. Discuss: http://oldschool.co....1-sc-chit-chat/
