  1. It's been an eventful summer for this thing so I guess to recap on things painted the sill swapped out gearbox with nunged 4th gear did a bunch of things to get it properly certified Did some drag racing got a cert plate broke a clutch cable went to leadfoot festival broke another clutch cable wailed on it around taupo racetrack wailed on it around national park broke an axle won some awards replaced an axle found a strange/mystery intermittent electrical fault that turns the ecu off and back on at random intervals things to do solve electrical fault tidy up engine bay install water injection tuning, if necessary ecu upgrade to something fully sequential to allow individual cylinder trimming probably another gearbag/131 box as 3rd on this one pops out on decel after the racetrack session..... pictures not sure if this is melted from 100+deg intake temps under overrun or backfires, cant have been helping either way. replaced it for now but need to look for a higher temp/more robust fast response IAT sensor really.

  2. And that's all for March. More to come in April, but this baby will take me until November or December to finish as I only have about half a day a week free, so it'll be a wee while between meaningful updates. I'd love to have the subfloor finished by May. Always May EDIT: Oh, I should probably share the view that'll be from the cabin's second deck. There will be two decks, one covered and hard up against the cabin (that'll have an outdoor kitchen), but there shall also be a second deck a few meters away with an outdoor dining table. This is what that dining table will look at. I quite like it (sorry about the horizon).

  4. I have to confess to making the fatal mistake of sharing a few reminiscent Wild Turkeys with Rigamortice in the man cave whilst surfing Trademe. Look what we bought……. It’s a standard 3.3 (far too flash and “modern” to be called 202) 12 port Blue motor out of an early VH Commodore. Rigamortice will love the solid state HD ignition and I won’t have to adjust the **** points every few months! Even better when I dropped its knickers and flipped it over I discovered this. With some girls you sometimes just get lucky ……. A virgin spec 3 ¼ inch counterbalance crank complete with the legendary Starfire con rods. (The legend was that when Holden chopped 2 cylinders of the Red 6 to make the Starfire 4 it was so out of balance they had to fit it with stronger Starfire rods to stop it throwing a leg out of bed when given the proverbial ‘jandal’). I’ll need to grind the mains down to accept the smaller 186 journals and some machining will be required to convert the rear seal from rope to neoprene. I’ll have to possibly relieve the block & sump for clearance and I’ll obviously need to fit the lower deck height 202 pistons but Rigamortice will love the extra stroke, cubes and counterweights. Compared to the steel 186 X2 crank (top) the difference is obvious. We also bought something else (all Rigamortice’ s fault) but I’m not letting on in case the lovely Mrs sr2 has discovered this thread..

  5. Nats was good, arrival was delayed by a workshop giving me the car back with no brakes on Thursday evening, not sure what they did but I bled it up myself on Friday morning then set off. Scavenger hunt was fun On the subject of belts I think I can finally put that to bed. I now have no whine and they all fit nicely. Whine was caused by a too narrow belt, a 15A1055 fixed that, a new turnbuckle style tensioner and a 13A900 fixed the slippy alt and an AX25 gave the right length for the power steering (needed something between 13A675 and 13A710). The cooling system performed like a champ in a long hot traffic jam on the way back from Nats, the fan chooches the heat away nicely and the 91 on 85 off thermoswitch seems to be ideal. Next up is to sort the rear so I can lower it again and change the speedo drive in the gearbox so the speedo is a touch more accurate (reads 90 at 100kph).

  7. A year down the track we decided to fix up a few things are we're using this car for our wedding. So: - Flares - Wheels installed - 10" Wards - Internal bonnet release from newer mini - Front grill to match internal bonnet release (Old one used to be able to access from outside the car) - Black wing mirrors to match the car's theme (Only had drivers side one before, was a bit of a hack job)

  8. Let's play "spot the AW11" on Google Street View... Image is from May 2015, so a month or two before the car was sold and shipped out to NZ. Yup, that's it on the right hand side of the shot. The car yard (Marumi Auto) has also revamped their website to highlight the fact they specialize in selling '80s and '90s sports cars, which is sort of cool! (And also some really oddball cars...) 9. There's a bit of doomsday in the motivation TBH. The cabin will be off the grid capable, with 12v solar, 240v generator, LPG cooking and hot water, and of course a potbelly for heating

  11. It may not be every boy's dream, but I've always fancied a cabin in the woods. As luck (plus planning, decades of hard work, and some determination) would have it I now own 'some wood's. First I selected a site, and then cut down all the gorse. No trees were cut down, but some were trimmed. There may be one smallish karo tree that needs to be cut down later, but I'm trying to avoid it. UJ are kind to nature you see. What you probably can't see is how steep it is. It's steepish at least

  13. air cleaner setup finished. i hunted for ages to find a filter of any sort that had a small enough outlet to suit the 2TG but i couldn't find anything that wasn't utter shit. i had this trust one that I've had for ages and it fit better than anything else id found but it was chrome and the foam filter medium had turned to powder. i found a pod filter that had a similar foam bit so i bought that and the foam fits nicely into the trust pod, unfortunately the foam is blue but you can't have everything. then i took the frame to work and gave it a light bead blast so the paint would stick and i painted it black. job done. and in exciting news i put new plugs in it along with fresh oil and a new filter. oh, and i got the heater core reco-ed and I've put the heater box back together with new foam in it and thats back in the car now. oh and also - the windscreen washer bottle was a bit second hand looking with some of the plastic all powdery and shit so i gave that a light bead blast too. i gave it a thick coat of primer then i sanded it back to try and get it looking a bit more presentable then i painted it black so thats done as well. I've bought a cylindrical radiator overflow bottle that ill mount down beside the side of the radiator and that will just about finish the engine bay i think. 2016-03-29_04-48-47 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-03-31_04-41-02 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-03-31_04-41-10 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-03-31_04-54-52 by sheepers, on Flickr

  17. Yeah easy enough to make, just need a Bosch donut style knock sensor, shielded cable and then wire it as an aux in to your laptop. Then listen with headphones. Just need to turn off software processing or whatever so you dont get any latency. Handy that you can record it as well though. I had it setup this way but ended up wiring knock sensor directly into ECU.

  18. Been a bit slack on the updates but the work has continued along when ive found the time. Decided it was time to start on the bodywork while I let the funds build back up as there is a few small bits still needing attention before I can go for a WOF check. The previous owner had stripped the front doors and boot back to bare steel as part of doing a full bare steel respray but due to the fact that the car has already had most of the rust dealt with last time it was painted I have decided to focus on getting it as smooth and straight as possible and doing a fresh coat of paint over the whole car. Sticking with white as I think it looks classy with the chrome bits and matches the interior nicely Il let the photos tell the story here

  20. Did the lower ball joint today, had a massive score in that Repco (my usual parts place was out of stock) is running out there home brand versions so I got it for $3.19. Yuss!!! Also pulled the sump off the gearbox, then the filter. It's definitely got some particles in there, it doesn't seem like enough to be causing issues but maybe. The fluid looked pretty red to me, but I've bought some fresh stuff so I'll use that. Pics of particles in filter: Opinions??? Also, this is the dream: Except WA is shit so in the interest of keeping it semi legal this is the more likely dream: Cheers Matt

  21. But then I visited Steelies in the Steelies house, and realised that my '< 10sqm' cabin was going to be just too small, so I had to dig some more holes, add some piles, carry more concrete... but in the excitement I seem to have started the creation of a twin level internal access basement. Ain't no one got time for a single level external access basement. They're for chumps. Split level with internal access is where it's at. The foreground (bottom right) in this picture is where the chainsaw is in the first picture. There's heaps and heaps more digging to go
    2 points
  22. Next came digging. Lots and lots of digging. The top 150mm of soil is nice organic type stz, but beneath that is compressed greywacke dust (or something like that) which is about as soft as Danger. It can't be dug with a spade, and a mattock was far too slow and akward, so I hauled a generator up there and used an electric rock breaker. Nek munute it was time to lump up pre-mix concrete and get some piles in.

  23. Hey Team, Been doing a couple of little things on the bug since I'm down from Auck. Got the motor and box in a while ago but couldn't get it going. I triple checked all the wiring and found nothing wrong so I sent the computer away to be checked. Have got it back with a few changes so hopefully it goes! Have chucked a few panels on. Will hopefully get it pretty much back together and driving this week. Rad

  25. So, here's the rundown: What happened was I was an idiot and put the clutch release bearing in backwards somehow, not exactly sure how this happened... I'll blame being sick. So I ordered a new clutch kit from Toyota (more cost effective than sourcing an individual bearing). Put that in today, checking and re checking that it was the right way around. Works perfectly. Also did alternator brushes today. So in the last week the car has had the following: -New coolant -New engine oil -New gearbox oil -New Sump gasket -New rear main seal -New front main seal -New rear main seal retainer gasket -New timing chain -New timing chain tensioner -New timing chain dampener -New timing chain cover gasket -New clutch kit -New alternator bearings (front only, the back bearing was like new) -New alternator brushes -New steering rack boots And maybe some other stuff that I can't remember. Car now runs like a treat and has no annoying rattles or ticks (the valves still make a little noise, as they should) any more. BAD RELEASE BEARING: Next jobs on the list? Probably a wheel alignment would be a good idea Rear suspension bushings would also be a good idea within the next year or so, but they are still functional WoF in 10 days.

  32. this guy made it more difficult for everyone who wanted to get certed really low. cops got sick of pulling him over and getting FTP PIG GOT A CERT FTP from him and his mates. so the cops made a complaint to LVVTA cause it was pretty low, spring hangers bashed the ground, tyres rubbed lots, etc so we got a talking to at training about not certing things too low. the lowest ive certed recently was 70-75mm i think

  33. Onto the more exciting stuff. Got the AC mounted and the power steer pump etc. Pretty much dummied up the whole lot and dropped it in one go. I had a few problems with the DR30 inlet manifold taking up a lot of room in the S12 engine bay. People said they fit ok - they dont... So I had to remove it and re think the situation.

  36. After all the excitement of Toyota fest i came home with an all new enthusiasm for making this car better. So with a four day weekend wherein i have 2 days free i decided i should make this 1GGZE thing happen. So i did this... If you have ever attempted to install an engine on your own using a forklift you will know this was a real cunt of an asshole of a job. Removing the engine was easy but putting the other one in and trying to tweak it ever so slightly to get the gearbox to line up with the clutch etc was a god dam nightmare and there were many swear words. But hey! how rewarding right? Amazingly everything bolted straight up and all lined up beautifully! Swapped the clutch and flywheel over, the fuel lines with the fuel filter bolted up with some minor tweaking. The only things I've really had to modify are the heater hoses and radiator hoses which were pretty easy. They are located in basically the same place as on the other engine so I've just had to make them a little longer or a little shorter. I'm not real happy with the radiator hoses but they will do for now. (not bad for shit i had laying around) Now just the wiring to take care of! ....... lame!

  38. So my joy is unbounded at receiving an email stating my parcel has arrived in the country, is being held by nz customs, and that they will send an invoice in a couple of days - once they have added up all the ways they can best squeeze my balls... Yes, this will be the replacement camshaft that NZ Post somehow managed to SNAP IN FUCKING HALF. And yes, this escaped any duty previously (under an exchange rate that should have made it cost more). And yes, it is Easter, so I expect it to be a fortnight before I receive anything... So. More delays, more cost, more frustration. All I ask is consistency (or a better method of getting parts I want without being fiscally raped). Cunts... This on top of a nice letter in the box yesterday advising I had been snapped (and demanding I pay for) doing the insane and life-threatening speed of 56 kmh. On a deserted 4-lane road. At 6:30am. I fucking love bureaucracy...

  39. MY GUARDS ARE FIXED!!!! Suffice to say I'm pretty happy about it. Guards where repaired with just 1 day to spare before a group of us riverside gang members were due to leave for Toyota fest down in Cromwell. So in one day and two late nights i managed to get the car legal enough to get a warrant and then low enough again to be cool. I would have liked to get the front down a bit more but virgin guards and stupid tyre profile would not allow it. Also ran out of time and patience. P.S rear guards arent finished yet either, still need a bit of careful shaping to get perfect and a proper paint as they are currently just in a white primer. After about a 800km round trip the car was still in one piece, despite all the tyre rubbing and chassis encounters with the road surface. Here is a bunch of pictures.

  41. Well its been 4 months and no progress - life gets in the way! Got a few hours this weekend and did this. Tacked the new inner sill in IMG_6576 Over the break did another order to Germany and got these new inner wheel arches, at about 15 euro each I couldn't pass them up IMG_6578 Decided if was better to just use it for a repair section - a lot less work then unpicking the whole thing. IMG_6580 Ready to stick in - tacked up the top join but the original steel is so very thin I need to get some .6mm wire for the MIG before I go much further. IMAG0698 But at least some progress. It will be another month before I get another chance now

  42. still fucking around with the rocket cover. i welded it back up and its ready for paint i just got side tracked by the dizzy. so i took the dizzy cap off for probably the first time since ive owned it and it was a disaster area inside. like it had been full of sea water for the last 10 years. I took the dizzy out and attempted to take it apart. every screw broke the head off when i tried to undo them and the vacuum advance plate was locked solid. I eventually got the thing apart and to my surprise the mechanical advance mechanism seemed to be working fine. it was a but rusty on the mounting plate but ok apart from that. so anywho it took me ages to clean all the shit and rust out of the vacuum advance plate and get it free again. then i had to drill all the broken screws out and re-tap it all. thankfully both the diaphragms on the vacuum advance module were working fine and had no leaks. then i packed it all with grease, set the air gap and put it back together. I put it back in the motor and tried to get it to run and the timing (which I had marked and then put back in the same place) was out by miles. When I eventually got it to run it was advanced by about 50 degrees. Im really surprised it ran at all like that but it did. Had to go back two teeth on the drive cam to get the dizzy into a spot where it was close and had adjustment to move the housing around. Once I got it close and started trying to set the timing properly it behaved really erratically. It would be sweet at idle, then Id give it a little rev and the timing would wander around all over the place. It kept doing this and I got pissed off with it and revved the shit out of it. after id done that it settled down and worked as it should. Turned out id put so much grease into the mechanical advance mechanism that the weights weren’t returning properly. After id revved it and flung all the grease out a bit the weights could move freely and it worked perfectly. All good. So it was time for a road test, got to the end of my road and pulled half way out into the main road and it died. Turns out the fuel pump had shit itself. So, push it back in to the garage, figure out what had happened, chuck another pump in it and drive it round the block. HEAPS better. So after all the kerfuffle the dizzy is now good as new but I still haven’t painted the rocket cover.

  43. I just realized its been the better part of a year since an update on this! i haven't done very much but i have done things. Like this Some aggressive guard rolling by yours truly has revealed a nasty bit of a repair on the drivers rear guard. Me being me picked and prodded at it and now it looks like that. That will be getting fixed early January! also this happened.. https://www.instagram.com/p/82XYKKKZSl/?taken-by=be4ver Flashing stuff is fun. Got tyres for my 10s!! Now running 14x9 -25 front and 14x10-25 rear. I will look at getting a lower profile tyre at some stage for the front but for now im pretty happy. 185 55s are a dam good fit on a 10" rim

  44. Managed to get the ol Bug into the booth on the weekend. Came up pretty sweet and I only put one run in.. I'll cut that off and it'll buff out sweet as apparently.. Started chucking some stuff back in tonight, just taillights and loom stuff. Will hopefully get the brakes and a few other things sorted this week and then slot the motor and box in on the weekend. Then do some skiddies. Cool

  46. Fuck I'm slack. I threw the SSRs on teh coupe before trackday last year, but I haven't even got around to taking photos of them fitted. and it's now March, so here they are: look mint in teh photos, but could honestly do with a hearty sand-down and respray. Just another thing to add to the bottom of the ever growing list

  47. swapped the standy rims onto the sedan, so the 15x8 Ewings have ended up on the back of the coupe instead. just a temporary solution until I can get the tyres swapped onto the 15x6.5 SSRs before trackday, but 215/60/15 might be a tad too tall for my liking... If I wanted to keep the Ewings on, the guards need to be rolled a bit more than they already are - both sides scrape heinously, but the LH side more so than RH.

  48. SSRs are back from Arrow Wheels with the lips all repaired, so next week is crunch time for the coupe... they'll get fitted, along with my new Japanese highering springs, wheel alignment will be done, steering box will get fixed to remove all the slop, then hopefully I should be all G for a warrant and the car will be fully road legal again. this is the last time anyone sees the car at its present ride height but the springs that are in it now will HOPEFULLY continue to live on, in StageFumer's HR30 coupe
