Toyota steel is much better than china spec . . . . . are you lot serious? just read all of the comments and think about this for a minuet !! this is the bit that connects you to your steering . there are reasons why you don't straighten them, heat them, or repair them. its cause IF THEY BREAK YOU ARE IN THE FUCKING SHIT

We chop and weld steering components all the time with drifting they get ndt'd and are accepted by msnz with the supporting paper work. Have they broken? Mine no but many have usually from impact. Its ok tho as we sign out lives away when we go out. if you get killed or kill somebody (and yes that also happens) you knew the risks so did your family tough shit. The poor guy traveling to the dairy to get milk for his wives tea didn't sign his life away tho. he infact did everything properly with regular maintenance keeping his car upto wof standard. But gets killed due to xyz breaking off some other dudes car because he thought it was ok to do so. Even tho it wasn't illegal to do so. He still fucked it up now theres a guy paying the ultimate price.... Get where im going

more removal of the things. will get a glass guy to remove the windows i think. probably cheaper to do that than break them. no big rusty surprises hiding which was good i knew this bit was lurking not much more to come out of it. will probably make some sort of frame so i can flip it on its side or upside down to do the underneath stuff. also have to decide how to tackle the body- i might get it properly blasted and primed. im going to fix the rusty bits myself but i will give it to a panelsmasher to get it straight and paint it. also been looking at other mods im going to do engine wise- current plan includes a new exhaust, might use some of these or similar, they are for a dodge truck. turned around and the collector shortened and re angled, should be able to make the pre turbo part of the exhaust shorter, and flow & sound better

Finally got the c-notch pieces laser cut. So we pulled off the tray and started stripping it back.

Heat it up and straighten it in a press, it isn't ideal but chances are you will get away with it. It really isn't that dodgy, people have been straightening things for years with no ill effects, basically it is just scare mongering from people who have very little knowledge in positions of power. Even if you don't get away with it the worst that is going to happen is that the caster will pull that wheel straight and you will have to pull to the side of the road steering with one wheel, no big deal really. To get past the wof brigade just wire wheel and paint and no one will know.

heres some relevant info on welding struts together that have cast/forged bits http://www.lvvta.org.nz/documents/infosheets/LVVTA_Info_05-2012_Welded_Aftermarket_Suspension_Struts.pdf as far as i know, none of these struts have been approved, one manufacturer had one tested, it failed, they modified the welding process and tried again, still no good, so they basically said "fuck this, NZ is a tiny market, CBF" and didnt bother any more

The old girls been putting along and the little 1600 Kent moves her very nicely, even made the trip from CHCH to Palmy over the Christmas break without a hitch, I recently had to do the head gasket as it popped and was making massey ferguson noises all over Wellington CBD. Ive also rebuilt the starter motor. Lately ive been acquiring parts for this girl consisting of an Aussie 6cyl diff (Falcon internals), Not one but 2 pre facelift GT/GXL Dashes/Centre consoles, New old stock guards, Grill. I also got a set of NOS Lucas Ranger spotlights in perfect condition, even had the switch to accompany them! Plans for the Tina have Manifested to me wanting to put a 302 Windsor in her with an off the self kit, but for the sort term it will be to fit the GT dash, fit a set of tombstone seats

so, the other side. i ground back the massive amounts of bog to see what was hidden benith. no surprise, a few very bad repairs. lol really , this is some sort of justification to repairing a cast steering components ??? is your axel directing the vehicle? is your axel about 130mm long and bent 10mm??? common , just think about it its really a simple thing to grasp here, look at all the things that could go wrong how many people could be killed. just if this one thing fails from a repair that you cant be sure is a good solid repair . its not illegal cause the there is a 0.5% chance that it would fail, its illegal cause you don't know if the repair has been done successfully, and its been proven time and time again that it can fail . this isn't something you can measure with a tape measure or tools from home. you haven't got any of the NDT testing or x ray inspection , you have a willy nilly "don't heat it up to much" type of answer . this shouldn't even be an argument , its ridiculous . , go have a Google , go do some research of metallurgical science, find out for your self why its illegal . we as a car community shouldn't be condoning bad practice, we are here to inform and help each other . Im not going to argue about this any more. I feel what I have said should be enough for anyone to grasp the seriousness of this topic. don't muck around with cast steering stuff its just not worth it. just throw it in the bin and get a new one.

look at all the work you have done to your car, think about the implications of your steering braking whilst going somewhere, or if you are on the motorway ? look at the all the work you have done going down the toilet if it does go wrong,. what happens if you take out a car full of people from crossing the center line? im not going to argue about the strength of cast components, before or after being bent then heated and straightened, or how you can have success at straightening it . because there is no NDT testing or any way to prove that you are right . this stuff can fail that is why its not meant to be done . this is a proven fact . this is why its law. its to keep everyone safe cause no one can be sure the repair is sound . don't be ignorant and say its safe , its illegal to repair for a reason the point is if it goes wrong and you have tried to repair it , then its your fault. is all your work worth a easy replacement part? or someone's lives ? just think about it, its not a expensive part to replace

yes. with only minimal skill its completely safe and directly in the same catagory as changing 13 inch steels to 16 inch alloys without certification.

Id bolt one set in and measure it up with internal micrometer. Then do the same with the other set. Then fingers crossed one set is obviously the correct set.

Since then i havent done an awful lot.. Engine is ready and waiting for me, heading to pick it up in 2 weeks, hopefully get an expansion chamber made up soon after.

So with the monumental help of Mike-E, I managed to get the car safely up to auckland. Loaded the car on first... Then filled it with shit... Put tables and an engine hoist on the trailer too... Thanks Marshall Profiling! In the end, I towed the car trailer up with my partners Landcruiser - it didn't do too badly at all! And here the Disiesel is all safely in it's new home: I kid you not, unloading this thing was such a fucking mission - it took from about 9ish until midnight - I had to reverse up this mega steep driveway, then detach the trailer and jack it up enough for the car to start rolling back, then gradually shimmy the trailer out from under the car. Pretty much by myself too cos my girlfriend has a broken ankle and wrist! Ahhhh fun!
