Now summer is here….. thoughts turned to making our picnic table usable. I made it about 14 years ago from nominal 2x4” pressure treated softwood. Some of it turns out to be more effectively treated that others.

Casual inspection suggested it was mainly the table top and bench rails that were done (and some were very done) so I optimistically went out and bought some decking timber to resurface it.

Then I came back and went to work…. The parallels with car restoration were immediately obvious. Loads of snapped fasteners, and loads of unexpected rot in awkward places. I forgot to take a before pic, so you’ll just have to imagine a well-weathered picnic table…..

Part way through, zone of maximum pieces. Devastation. No picnic table recognisable. Thought I was going back to the wood shop…… but careful examination showed that there was easily enough sound timber, in the top and benches ironically, to remake the structure, most of it in fact.

Then reassembled, this time sloshing the joint areas (worst rotted, just like cars) with preservative.

Here it is…. Even got some ok-ish timber left over. And a lot of crumbling shrapnel.

I have a requirement to unload a 1000kg milling machine off a trailer onto my garage floor this Sunday.

But at the boom extension required for clearance, my engine crane is only rated to 500kg.

Here is my solution.

I've also moved the pickup point for the ram forward 150mm. According to online lever calculator, this would need only half the rams 7500kg capacity to lift 1200kg.

I've added spacers to tighten up the legs where the locking pins are, so they are not all wobbly anymore. I'll probably also use a few g-clamps to clamp some more rectangular section over where the legs pivot.

I'll put wooden blocks under it so I don't have to worry about the wheels collapsing.

I'll I need to do is lift the mill high enough to drive the trailer out from under it, then lower it onto 25mm roundbars as rollers.

you may find it will need more weight added at the back side or longer legs,for tipping reasons.  definitely keep it in mind before committing to the lift.

Have put 1.5 ton on the 250kg setting on a supercheap hoist and then moved it around … 

as above I would be more worried about centre of gravity than shear strength

I got to work late the other day to see the guys had our ine with the legs removed and swinging a 350kg 18 speed box down into the pit below ground level with 3 dudes hanging off the back as counterweight. Lol

Yea, I have seen 'other people' poke a longer bit of box section in the top to get some more reach, and an old engine block on the back to uprate it some more

I did this to put My garage roof trusses up, i hung off it (100kg) and it was unsteady for tipping the crane.  the trusses with tin were about 40kg so i considered it ok.

Wanted to make this door more interesting, so decided to do some random veneer pattern. Learned how to do this from a furniture maker and artist who also supplied the veneers.

I wanted to include some 3D cubes but beyond my skills at this stage, maybe next project on a smaller scale.

 

Started out with a few trial pieces

 

 

 

Built up a sheet that was 1960 long and 860 wide, all taped together. Then used contact adhesive to bond it to the door 

Glued on and rolled, weighted down for a day, then sanded with 400 grit

 

Oiled and a 30mm pine boarder added

 

All finished, underestimated how long it would take to cut all the pieces… few gaps but overall pretty happy

Started to build a waste oil burner today out offcuts and scrap parts 

Couldn't help myself to test the burner with a cup of oil sitting in the bottom ,oil feed will be fitted tomorrow (1 cup =15mins), 1st video is with the leaf blower it burns cleaner but way to noisy,

2nd is with compressed air

Was doing some yard work a couple weeks ago and my cheap tree saws plastic handle feel apart.

Whittled this out of a old piece of the house, on Saturday the neighbour who is into his woodworking helped finished it.

Came out nice, looks great, fits your hand mean. Could have just bought a new one but this was heaps better.

Had enough of playing with bikes for now so turned my attention to some work around the house, the old spa was long dead so what to do with it hmmmmmm ok plan hatched Tiki Bar for summer, how to get rid of the spa built deck over it, find some old scrap timber and just start building I guess.
