  2. Made a start on the bed over the past week, first thing was to remove all the old brackets and supports. They were a bitch to remove since they were spot welded ever 150mm or so and you couldn't see where the spot welds were, eventually got there after doing 1/4 of them each day after work. Decided to put the c-notch up through the deck because I think they look terrible with a raised deck with hardly any depth. After that I made up a frame out of 40x40 box section that fits on top of where the original wood would of sat. That means the deck will be about 40mm higher than standard, which is good because it will hide all the rust/corrosion behind where the old brackets were removed. Need to sandblast/paint where those brackets were and everywhere below the box section and fix the rust up the front of the tray. Was thinking of making the whole deck lift up so you can access stuff underneath it, but I couldn't figure an easy way to do the hinges. Then I realised I only really need to access the airbag stuff and the fuel tank so I'll just make the back third lift up. Made a mock-up in Solidworks to test how the hinging works. The pivot point needs to be above the wooden boards so that they clear the c-notch panel when it lifts up. Seems like it works well, can lift up to 60 degrees before it hits.

  4. experiments with scrub radius. so the front end is less than perfect with the 245s on the front and a really positive scrub radius its pretty twitchy. i couldn't get the wheel any closer to the strut, its basically touching now. i started thinking about the clevis type mounting of the strut that lots of modern stuff has. that design would allow me to move the wheel inboard and decrease the scrub radius right? so, choose one that has lots of parts available and is really well supported by aftermarket shit. S15. parts for days. so i bought some S15 front hub carriers and LCAs and had a bit of a measure. straight away its clear that the Nissan design moves the ball joint 30mm closer to the centre line of the tire. whilst all other things remain basically the same. win. on first inspection it looked like it could work. there were a couple of things that might throw a spanner in the works but i rang the guys at Techno Toy Tuning and they could supply me with a fabricated lower control arm that would bolt into the AE86 crossmember and have the right balljoint taper for the S15 hub. good. so with a bit of fucking around i amassed the following parts that in theory would all come together seamlessly to make it work, S15 hubs S15 Tein coilovers MX70 cresseda inner tie rods TTT LCA's made to adapt S15 to celica/AE86 (ring them, they make heaps of them apparently) complete with castor arms stock S15 tie rod ends bolt it all together then attach it to a celica and it all fits. bump steer measured at +2mm from ride height to full bump and + 2mm from ride height to full droop. a total travel of 140mm and a total toe change of 2mm positive. that will do me just fine. have i fixed the scrub radius? well its all theory at this point because i only trialed it today. i need to get the struts rebuilt and find the bracket that came with my front brakes that will bolt my calipers to the S15 hubs. but, the ball joint is 30mm closer to the centreline of the tire. at 2 degrees camber the strut top is much closer to the center of the car that it was before. when you draw it all that change in line angle makes a big difference. also there is now a 20mm gap between the strut and the wheel so i could move the wheel in by 20mm and decrease the scrub radius even further if i need to. im calling it a win. im going to get the struts rebuilt and find the brackets then bolt it all in and see what happens. here are some random pictures of things. 2017-09-30_04-59-07 by sheepers, on Flickr 2017-09-30_04-58-57 by sheepers, on Flickr 2017-09-30_04-58-39 by sheepers, on Flickr 2017-09-30_04-58-30 by sheepers, on Flickr 2017-09-30_04-58-21 by sheepers, on Flickr 2017-09-30_04-58-05 by sheepers, on Flickr

  5. got 13psi dialed in, one day might get the wheels off the ground. not enough run up /too slippery here. looks like it wants to nose wheelie, due to the front weight bias and rear setup. but soaks up the bumps good made a new heat shield for intake. half finished here measured it up, pretty much bang on standard ride height. even with the extra 3inchs up travel in the front.

  7. 3 weeks or so ago my workmate purchased this Skyline from a bloke we both know. It had been sitting on the lawn unloved for over a year, parked due to power steering not working and the mindset of it will take too much to get legal. Its a 1990 R31 GXE rocking a slush box and a RB30E. Done 208000kms (although the odo has just stopped) is relatively tidy with a couple bumps here and there as you expect. Interior is super clean, nearly everything works too. So my workmate rocks up with fresh fuel and battery, gets her running, unseized the brakes and drives it home. He already has a gnarly RB30DET Cefiro and only bought the R31 for the bottom end as a back up. He drove it for a few days and decided it was too good to wreck. Chucked it through a VTNZ WOF and got a short list. The P/S pump not working Corrosion on P/S pipe on the rack (had a hole) Rear brake pipe corrosion Horn to work All easy shit but with no room for the car in his driveway, a mental Cefiro that takes all his money and 2 other cars he decided to sell it on.... A deal was done and I bought her for $600 and I picked her up Tues evening. Got the horn working as soon as I got home and drove her to work the next morning. Weds after work we made up a new pipe for the rack (cheers @Seedy Al and the boys at city center for the pipe), bled the p/s system and cleaned up the rear brake lines. Thursday morning it had fresh wof and rego Fuck yeah legal! She had a horrible fart cannon shoved on the rear of the exhaust, it sounded terrible, droned like fuck and was generally shit. Dealt with that today at work, cut off shitty fart cannon and welded in a nice round barrel muffler and now cruising is so much nicer on the ears. Airfilter was absolutely buggered and because I hoard crap I had a sik poddy kicking around. With all the bits of pipe, adapters etc I managed to throw the pod filter on for max doooorts. The plan is to lower her on standard suspension from other Nissans so I get low but still have the lounge suite feel. Different wheels and just go with the flow from there.

  8. much work over the weekend mott came round on saturday and helped a bunch finishing welding up all the exhaust stuff that I had fitted up and tacked togethe,r while i worked on the thesis for my turd polishing doctorate. not only had the good old boys bo and luke of north taranaki been trying to emulate randy campbells greatest ever stunt and bashed the crap out of the fuel tank, it had some epic corrosion paint coating chemistry going on which took several hours of wire wheeling to remove and find out what specification colander i have. Im guessing the combination of the rustpaint protective coating and the holes being on the top of the tank meant no one ever noticed previously. anyway got all the paint and rust and shite off, cleaned and treated the rust. will have to cut and weld and patch in the top and the one pit hole in the bottom and some of the dents will get sorted with the fitting on the sump. also made up a frame and and brackets to mount the tank and got all that done. will get onto fitting the sump and repairing the tank next. PS thanks again jack ma, can vouch that these all in one drillytappy things with impact driver hex drive are astonishingly better that what i expected actually work awesome

  11. Quiet afternoon at the shop so I thought hell with it, I'm gonna fit these triples on the car! I've ordered some new jets to bring it back down to OEM spec as at the moment they're way too huge (came off L28, big cam). Highly likely to run like garbage on the 2L but whatever, will look and sound sweet haha. Give me motivation to get an L28 working. Obviously there are a few things to work out before we can try to start it.. such as fuel hoses, coolant hoses, throttle and so on so there's a bit to do.. but they look rad! Will have to polish up the trumpets for sure! And annoyingly still the left brake caliper sticks. The whole brake system could use a going over so I will look into rebuilding the front calipers. PS: If you know of/have an L28 for sale holla at ya boi. Don't need most of the bits mainly just long block will be good. Needs to have been running, or still running. 13. rear setup needs alot of work before im doing that again ^ needs a bit more rear up travel and some hydro bumps. then dial out some anti squat, so doesn't send the ass up in the air so much. didnt really build it for jumps, but its pretty fun

  14. Went for another wee spin last night, found a dark wall and adjusted the headlights, so now they point at the road, not the sky. Also adjusted the steering box, feels much better, just needs alignement me thinks, still a bit vague and twitchy. Rear end feels good, amazing how much of the road surface transfers though the car, from the rear end it would seem, might be the ride height I guess

  15. Turned left after doing a bit more reading. Made front mounts and a trans mount. Assuming I have all my measurements right, its in the middle, and I have about 1.3 degrees slope on the 1st section of driveshaft which is where it needs to be according to the interweb. Im swapping the rear end to a 12 bolt, so I can set up the pinion angle. Been pretty productive really ! All just tacked together at the moment. Everything is just sitting there in the photos, need to drill a few holes and bolt it all up. not 100% happy with the trans effort and may rejig it a bit yet.

  17. Had a bit fun playing Datsuns thisavo. Nice avo sun and a box of beer made productivity a little low. Did a little picking around bits which looked like bog on the blue diesel. probably wasn't such a good idea. Spent a bit time trying to get the brown petrol to run. Gave the points, rotor, and cap a clean which gave me spark. Checked it had oil pressure and rigged up an electric fuel pump. It didn't want to go on its own but I could keep it running with engine start so needs the carb cleaned. I also gave them all a squirt with 30 second spray and wok away to try kill the lichen. It will be interesting to see the effects. I'll give them a waterblast in a few weeks.

  18. I don't think I have any pictures of how the cab was before but the carpet was really gross. Took it all out and found a bit of surface rust so pentretroled it and painted over. Then today I carpeted it with some bunnings stuff. Pretty pleased how it came out. Next point of order is to take it for a drive with @Steelies and decide what's next to do. (Hopefully he has time!) Hopefully can take it away at labour weekend for a test run.

  19. Have been uber slack for the last few months, things gt too hard. Finally got around to buying some engine mounts (arrived today), after the replacement ones sourced from Japan didn't actually exist. SO have some out of a 260c which are very similar and will/should bolt to the car, but possible some fiddling of the engine brackets to get it sitting right as they are a bit taller. So this weekend will look at getting the flywheel and clutch etc all bolted back up, and have a crack at putting the engine back in the hole. Progress. Hopefully.

  20. G'day All, Figured I may as well make a little project log thingy for my newest project, a '62 Morris Mini Minor. I picked this thing up not too long ago and have been getting stuck in with ambitions to have it done early next year. I've been on the hunt for a MK1 for ages now so I'm super stoked to get into it. The car had been stripped down and semi-restored some 20 years ago by the previous owner, but never quite finished. This has led to the paint deteriorating, and heaps of parts disappearing over time. This prompted me to buy a '62 parts car from some guys lawn for its engine/interior bits/suspension parts. I've got almost all of the parts for it now! Its just a matter of painting it and getting it back together and on the road again As far as plans go I'm still not totally sure what color id like it to be. Wheels can be changed to suit, but I guess paint's a different story. Was thinking something along the lines of a light metallic blue with an old English white roof, wide steels/mags and a mesh sun visor for that retro mod kinda look. Something that could be taken back to original spec if need be. Was even thinking of doing it black or just standard white, but I'm not too sure. Cheers guys, looking forward to getting more involved on the forum. -Jack. -The 850cc engine in the front end of the less than fortunate parts car. 25 years of sitting on a lawn didn't stop it from running - it fired right up the day after it fell out of the van and onto the driveway. Wasn't seized, and has only done 40,000 miles. Just hoping that the 850 will be enough for me to keep up with traffic!

  21. Discussion - I picked this campervan up late 2016. I took a bold risk by sending an OS member to go and see it for me and then agreeing to buy it unseen. So we flew to CHCH and got the bus to Timaru. Picked it up, so off we went. Drove it 30 mins down the road engine cut out. Good start... One overnight stay later, I check the dipstick in the morning and the oil level was super high. The guy came with his tools, fucked around doing random shit as if he didn't know what he was doing and it wouldn't start. Told him to just drain the oil for me and see how it goes. It started. So off we went. Get to petrol station, fill up, won't start. It was obvious that the battery was flat as no lights etc were coming on. Asked the petrol station lady if I could use my leads on her car and she agreed. So off we went. Luckily I'd agreed to collect an axle/diff for Kicker from Karl. So I rang him and said can I meet you at a petrol station and can you bring your jump leads? He agreed. Met him and then he jump started me.. So off we went. So for the rest of the drive back we agreed to fill up with the engine running as it was OK when it was running. Get to Picton, So close to the finish line! - Engine cuts out as soon as I pull up.. FARRKKKK SAKE. Anyway had a mobile mechanic guy come out and he gave me a new battery and put it on. So off we went. Drive it off the ferry, all good. Get to the hill just next to where I live and it was pretty obvious that the clutch was now starting to slip. What the hell have I got into I thought to myself. The van very shortly after we picked it up. Luckily I am surrounded by GC's so I got Seedy involved and he basically replaced everything that was old and shit on the engine (including new alternator and ALL the wiring for it!). He also fitted a revometer cos he was all like "Dude you're a deaf twat and you're revving it soooooo much so I'ma fit you a revometer in so you can see what you're doing". Like seriously, that's so awesome how he made the van more accessible for deaf people. There was still some hesitation on the engine wanting to rev, but it ran and started reliably so road trip around the south island for 3 weeks.. So off we went. The beginning of the trip.. One of Jokers Work of art Waterfalls Had a pretty fucking couple of days then headed towards CHCH. When bomf, no power at all. Fuck. Called AA. Guy came, Timing gears have stripped. This is where OS really shined. Never met any of these people before apart from Karl and you all made sure we got back to being on the road. Felixx came and towed us to a campsite near him/karl where we lived for the next 4 nights until the shops were open again for us to pick up parts. In that time, luckily ThreeOnThree was in the area and had organised with Karl a South Island meet where they would be destroying a triumph, but they also now focused their efforts on helping me get the timing cover, gears, and harmonic balancers off. This was harder than it should have been but everyone came through. So thank you all. Triumph being dismantled. Engine and rad Felixx clearing the rad out The pony old electric fan The engine OS south island krew. When good head comes together. Shitty Fibre gear. Went to rare spares, bent over and pulled my trousers down and said please rape me, I want the timing gears for an holden 202 in alloy. They preceded to truely butt fuck me but at least I had the timing gears at last. Got a mobile mechanic to help me finish off the job and we were back up and running.. So off we went.

  24. In September some friends held a private track day at Taupō club circuit as a 30th birthday celebration. What a great idea for a party! This track is where I started in motorsport. I began volunteering here at age 12, waving flags and having a ball. It's a fun simple track. I also managed to crash my MR2 here in 2004 at the Toyspeed meeting! Here is some video (not just of my car!) featuring a bit of cone slalom and mediocre attempts at drifting. Other than that, I've replaced the ever so 90s head unit with a basic Sony media player, and tidied up the gauge mounting. New front brake pads were required, with a hairs width of material left after all these track events. I've gone with Hawk HP Plus pads. They are supposed to be an aggressive track capable street pad. I have yet to see how tolerable they are for dust and disc wear. My cooling system upgrade parts are still waiting to be fitted. I've had no issues yet, but summer is coming. The local "Caffeine & Classics" meetings happen once a month which are quite popular and interesting. Here is my little car parked between some boats

  30. I made a little PCB!! This one is the result of my second attempt at ironing the transfer to the copper. it was not perfect but good enough for me- unfortunately my sharpie has a thick tip so was hard to touch up any missed bits. This will hold my 6 little relays.

  31. Have finished the majority of the rust in the doors, just one little hole on the side of one to go. I have welded on a new folded over flangey bit and painted all in there on the photo below. Has come out pretty good. The other door was pretty much the same deal. Another thing I did was make the cowl vent bracket fit this dash. Since it's changed to the RHD dash and I'm still using the LHD vent bracket it ended up mounting in the same place the glove box hinge was, so cut it up and drilled some new holes. That's the vent fully opened, can also be set to be slightly opened. Needs a different seal as the current one is too stiff and doesn't allow the vent to pull down flush, otherwise it operates pretty well. Filled up the two holes that were left at the top of the firewall as well, probably should do the same to those other two. Hooked up the accelerator cable. Then did some average panel beating and bogging to fix where the panel warped when I welded the bracket to the back of the firewall. Might need a bit more work one day. The part that clips in to the firewall for the accelerator cable was a bit loose and needed some sort of spacer, so laser cut out some circlip sort of things. Cable ties are sweet to hook the cable to the pedal right?! It does work well though, has good travel, feel etc. Received the seatbelt mounts back from getting passivated. Today I made up this after work. It is to mount the steering column to the firewall. Making a cone that small out of 2mm stainless without using rollers isn't very fun! Pretty happy with how it turned out though. Don't think I could make the steering column any shinier if I tried! Haha Borrowed a wheel off the Mercury to see what whitewalls look like. They're a bit wider and higher profile than what I'll be using, looks so sweet though!

  37. Weather is rubbish so I'm just ticking away at cleaning up parts - making use of the dishwasher while the girlfriend is away. Pulled open the air boxes to discover that they're in rubbish condition. These bikes are pretty sensitive to induction and ideally I'd like to keep standard filters BUT at $300 or so for a pair of NOS filters, it's just not the sort of money I want to spend on a $2500 Honda. I've seen online where people have replaced the filter material with either filter foam or a cutdown K&N paper filter. Will try cut them out and see what the best option is.

  38. circuit maker is made by altium, so line width is likely the tab key (tab key gets you into the properties box of whatever you're doing) and just send the PCBs to OSH Park and you will get 3 of those PCBs pro made for $5 per square inch or something, and they free ship it back to NZ. Bloody great for hobby stuff if yuou can wait the 3 weeks to get the PCBs

  39. Touched up all the spots I missed when painting the frame today - turns out the paint shop mixed me matte black instead of gloss. Ended up spraying the whole thing so it matched. Not ideal, but I'm not too bothered. Also started tidying up the wheels and spokes which is definitely the most tedious thing I've ever had to do on this bike. If Auckland gives me some sun tomorrow I plan to paint the engine hangers and throw the engine into the frame. Fingers crossed.
