  1. Howdy all. New project time... Discussion: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/45799-jeds-1976-torana-sedan-ongoing-project/#entry1414625 Not too much to show so far - I picked this car up a few months ago for a good price initially to cut up for patch panels for the hatch, but it's just too good for that so I've decided to put the hatch on hold while I try & get this on the road. Lotta work ahead of me, but I'd like to get it done by xmas next year (famous last words I know). Getting a shed built over xmas/new year this year so I'll have a bit more space, but in the mean time I'll do what I can in the 'might as well be' single garage. Here is a pic of it coming home & in it's new parking space making friends with big brother.. First job was to empty the car out of all it's spare parts, lucky I've got a spare room as it filled that up pretty well. The car came with two sets of doors, guards, bonnet, boot, bumpers so I should get a good set sorted for the car. All the mechanical parts I've collected for the hatch are going to go in this car, then once this is done I'll hopefully know what direction I'll be taking with the hatch. Mocking it all up to a point before I start on rust repairs. Had a VN V8 brake booster for a while, so I've cut the end off it & welded the Torana end on & shorter as well.. Fitted HQ sump to the VR clubsport engine.. Mounted on to hatch front end, lifted up front of car with engine hoist, dropped old front end out & rolled this one under.. Engine in place.. Temporary gearbox crossmember.. At this stage the car sat for a few weeks & I had second thoughts about the direction I was heading with it, but a mate came around the other day & convinced me I just had to do it all out with the V8 & flares so we decided to tape the flares on & chuck on the nose cone & front spoiler to see what it'd look like.. Rolled one of my newly acquired hotwires in front to see what it'd look like & I was pretty happy.. Today I finished welding up the radiator support panel. I bought this a couple of years ago when rare spares didn't know how to make them properly & it was straight when it needed to be curved. So I cut some slots, spread it out a bit & welded it up. I'm no fantastic welder but it came up alright. I'll probably weld a plate to the front through just to strengthen it up a little.. This brings me up to date on this. It's not going to be a fast build but I'll be ticking along on it & I'll update this thread whenever progress is made if y'all are interested

  2. New wheels - Got a set of Advan A3A's in 14 inch. Rears are 6.5 inch and fronts are 6 inch. Offset +6. There is more room in the rear to go wider but will need guard rolling. Front has no more clearance to the guard but could fit another inch or so toward the strut. Rears running 175/65/14 and fronts 165/65/14. Surprised how much better it stops than it did with the 165 supercats on the stock 13 inch wheels. Any serious brake application use to result in more tyre squeal than stopping ability. Have had a couple of hairy moments. Pic of wheels: And a pic in front of a suitably old school backdrop Not sure what's next have been mulling over getting a pair of sidedrafts and learning about carbs. There is a poorly listed sidedraft manifold on trademe that should fit but it has no linkages so not sure if it's worth buying bits and pieces or just bite the bullet and order this: I was going to start tidying up the body but I have come to like some of the poorly handpainted patches and dings etc. May just get the big dings out of the bumpers if it doesn't mean rechroming and try and find a front grill as the one on it is a little bit rough. Any opinions/thoughts - //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/42845-drivebys-1973-mitsubishi-galant-gto/

  7. Here's the underside of a Quadrajet: Their spreadbore design (as opposed to square bore where both the primary and secondary inlets are the same size) means that when properly set up, they can give excellent economy when cruising on part throttle yet flow very well when the secondaries are opened.

  8. After keeping my eye out for a good one of these for a while this 1973 Mitsubishi Galant GTO popped up on here a couple of months ago and it now resides in my garage. Big thanks to forum member Runamuck who got me in touch with the owner Basil. Had a bit of a chat with Basil, liked what I heard so we agreed on a price and I posted a cheque down to Basil and Captain Transporter bought the GTO up to Auckland where I picked it up and drove it up to Whangarei. It drove perfectly and was a bit more powerful than I expected. The engine has been reconditioned relatively recently and doesn't use any oil or water which is a first for any Mitsubishi I have owned. The interior is pretty good . Could possibly do with some new carpets but not urgent. Has the original AM radio so listened to talkback all the way home. Was relatively enjoyable so I think the AM radio will probably stay. The paint is not too bad. It's definitely not perfect with quite a bit of brushed on other shades of yellow in areas where surface rust was obviously treated. The passenger door is a slightly different shade too. I wasn't that sold on the yellow when I saw the original pics and the plan was/is to respray back to original silver but the yellow has grown on me. A respray, if it happens, will be a few years down the track. It's had a few little nudges over the year, the original wheels have been painted silver, the front grill has a few cracks and there are various other little bits that need attending to but all in all it's a bloody honest little car and a real credit to the previous owners. Plans? This will be relatively slow. Need to find a couple of badges that are broken, I want to take the rear screen out and check a leak going into the boot (I think there may be some rust around the screen), then get the dents taken out of the bumpers/rechrome and basically tidy her up. The skinny rear wheels on her can be a bit frightening powering through corners so maybe a set of wider wheels but I don't really want to ruin the originality of the car. Maybe some Advan A3A's and a little bit lower might work. Feel free to comment or maybe even tell me where I can get an air filter for her. The paperwork included with the car seems to indicate the mechanic couldn't find one to replace the dirty one in there at the moment and I haven't got around to looking! 10. Discuss //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/44865-dadams-73-ke26-discussion/?hl=ke26 Hi! After deciding that the old faithful 1200 wagon was way to far gone for me to attempt to save on my budget and skill level I decided to go pick up the next best thing, behold, the mighty ke26! Pick it up off a fellow oldschooler up in the 09 area, flew up, talked some shit, turned the key and drove back to wellington with zero dramas, so pretty much the best start you could wish for! Specs are that shes pretty much stock, will kinda. Has a big block 4k with a little head work, mild cam and Weber carb, which has around (at a guess) 10,000k on it from rebuild, 5 speed k50 box, 50mm blocks and lowered front springs with new shortened shocks. Shes no rocket ship but does go fairly well for a 4k. As it was when I got it.. Decided that I wasn't to keen on the 12's and white walls so decided to clean up some ssr star formula's I had in the garage. So out with a bunch of masking and a couple of tins of paint, a set of 165/50/14s and we're back in business. In the process also swaped it up from 4x110 to 4x114.3, so in went some ke30 front hubs and re-drilled rear axles.. Result Yea I know, need to lose another 40mm or so off height, but thats a story for another day...

  15. Got this out for its first road test this weekend! be it a very small noisy and dodgy road test! Everything seems to be working fine, except the cover on the back of the gbox rubs on the driveshaft making a horrible horrible noise. Also sussed out the speedo cable problem i had. The gbox end of the galant one originally had a square drive and the new box has this which uses a keyway type thingo. As luck would have it an EX Lancer has a cable with that end and the speedo end is identical to the galant. It was also slightly longer which made fitting it that much easier! it even seems to be reading pretty much correctly - 5-10km low. Since i probably won't be painting this for some time i've been toying with the idea of putting on some old racing livery on it. Started with this but it came out a little average some thing like this tickles me

  16. Brilliant Canterbury weekend, with a healthy forecast of sun I had a mate call over on saturday with an engine hoist and we mated the block and gearbox and lifted er' in, seemed a good plan but with that bloody rubber donut on there was little space to shuffle, next time, leave the cross member on the box, not pre-fitted, that left a long afternoon in the sun working on my tan refitting bits and pieces. Almost deserves to be left in the lounge just to look at If it don't fit, force it! Its in! dry fit to check clearances for the carbs..... no trouble, about 100mm above before the bonnet, just not enough for the battery, considering moving it to behind the passenger seat, but for that effort I'm thinking of finding a smaller cell that fits, heaps of room there, just not for the current mount.... That leaves time for a few beers and smiles, not much left to go to get her running. Spent today (Sunday) at the workbench finishing off the inlet manifold confident in knowing that it all fits, also got back onto solidworks and drew up the airbox, picked up a pod filter from GuyWithAviators which will take care of the intake until I work out the best way to tackle it, that and I needed the car running two weeks ago! Not the prettiest, but for only first picking up a Tig 3 months ago, i'm pretty happy, the quality of welds on the left, the final runner are much better than the first, I must have learnt something!

  20. Cool, do you come thru to the monthly burger nights? Would be good to catch up. By the way I invested $30 in an adapter plate and last night I chucked a spare Holley 350 2 barrel onto my van just for shits and giggles. I ran out of time so it was straight on with no adjustment and it sure smells like it is still running rich at idle. Earlier today we did a cruise out to Orewa and I gassed up when we got home. Worked out to 15.5 liters per 100km. I didn't really notice much reduction in performance either.

  24. Picture less update unfortunately A few days after wheel alignment I brought a new daily and all my money has been going into that Starley got a new big diff leak! Have taken axle out 2-3 times and think I may have finally sorted it. Tried to start car for the first time today in a few months. Wouldn't have a bar of it. Checked everything and have no idea why it won't roar into life After 3 hours I kinda gave up in anger. I don't know what the bloody things issue is! Moved car into a new shed and got to buy it a nice new car cover as birds also live in the shed.

  26. Na ended up going to trackside as the old boy there fucking loves the chevette so it tends to get an easier time unfortunately the same can't be said for the deliboy which i don't think is even that dodgy but has every warrant place so far looking for any reason not give it a wof (one place even told me that to my face). There faces when they have to stick a wof sticker on are priceless!

  27. The rest of the summer was spent generally hooning around ... well as much hooning as you can do with an awesome Vauxhall power package. The annual pilgrimage to Kumue in January 2011 nearly ended in tears when she started to overheat whilst we were sitting in the traffic. On pulling out the radiator I discovered that most of the fins had long gone and the inside looked pretty blocked. I splurged out on a re-core, new radiator hoses and a brand new water pump. Whilst I had it all in bits I replaced the cam belt and had the distributor reconditioned. New spark plugs, leads and a distributor cap completed the package. Although the cooling issue was a thing of the past, performance still left much to be desired. It seemed to have an unquenchable thirst for both fuel and oil and I soon realised that I was on a hiding to nowhere if I was going to try to make anything decent out of the original mechanicals. So I hatched a cunning plan which came in the form of a donor van fitted with a Chev 350 small block, TH350 auto and a Galaxy 9 inch rear.

  31. Well yesterday was a success, finished piecing the car back together, including the coolant overflow and oil sendier block.. So mid afternoon we fired it up, set the base timing, and rolled it out of the garage. We got about 2k's down the road, and the Idiot oil light flashes up, along with a bit of a trail of oil behind us. Turns out you shouldn't believe the internet for guidelines on how to fit hose ends to Stainless braid, luckily the engine seems to be fine still, and I now know how deep you need to insert the olive back down inside the teflon to get the proper grip. Anyway after a bit of a clean-up, and the hose put together properly we were out for round two. The timing numbers were flattened out a it for the run-in and Afr's tweaked a bit. withing about 8 k's it was seeing wastegate pressure (about 9.5 PSI) and it was pulling reasonably well from low RPM in the taller gears. There is a slight stutter at WOT in tall gears as it builds boost, although AFR's and timing look ok.. So that will need a bit of further digging. Driveshaft was given it first clutch-dump test which resulted in a solid launch rather then wheelspin or the carbon fibre prop shaft turning to dust. (great) Initial impressions - the clutch feels nice and progressive (but needs another bleed), gerarchanges are slick and positive feeling but it will take some getting used to the position of 5th and 6th, the diff grips up nicely, and the handling is not too bad (although have not really pushed it yet). No noticeable driveshaft vibe at higher speeds. One clear contender for the rubbish awards is the big master matched with the OEM front brakes, man they are properly wooden.. Will try and find a photo so this isn't just a wall of text note poverty pack wheels off my kp on the front as they are still 4x100

  34. been slowly getting this engine wiring sorted out. Everything seems to be working as it should, have got spark and injector pulse. Weekend mission is to get oil and filter on and it, fill with coolant and sort out the fuel pump situation. With all that done it should in theory fire straight up! Purchased this lip, its going to be a shit to mount but it will look the part when its on there. And just for something different i tried some wheels on. SSR MK3s 14x7.5s. They fit pretty sweetly but the front guards will need a good rolling. Also done this just to liven the engine bay up a bit sorry about the shitty pics!
