  1. The Dynafari continues to do the things it does amazingly well, in particular looking absolutely fucking banging from every angle, and moving all sorts of shit about the place with aplomb. I took it to the Nelson swap meet and sold fuck all, but talked myself hoarse with all the questions about it, so that was fun. On a side note one dude crawled right under it for inspection and solemnly informed me that it was illegal due to how I had welded the cross member brackets on, I suggested that the fact it had literally just been certified might be a contraindication of that, but he wasn't having a bar of it. We had to agree to disagree... Now for the adventures; I decided to take a punt on that fuel pump and slapped it right in there. This must be the 70billionth time I have removed that fucking seat and covers. I timed it up and got it to fire..... And it fully fucking red lined from the get go. I turned off the key but it turns out the cut off solenoid won't seat when there is all of the fuel pressure keeping it up because the governor is gummed open. I kept a relatively calm head though, grabbed the 17mm spanner and cracked injectors until it stopped. Yay. I then wiped the atomized fuel from my face and the inside of the truck and went out into the deck and had a quiet ten minutes of reflection. Then I unbolted the pump and bolted the old one back on. I started it with much trepidation, however it seems to have handled the fun with no ill effects, phew. This turned out to be more useful situation than I expected, because when I drove it the clatter was exactly the same but 100rpm further up the rev range. I had timed the pump differently than prior, so this tells me the clatter is almost certainly pump related. At this point I finally came to terms with how stupidly expensive getting pumps rebuilt was and caved in. I dropped the 11mm pump off to Jake at Marine and Engineering who stripped it and told me it was fucked. I then dropped off all the bits of the other pump and a half from my previous escapades and he confirmed they were also fucked. He did say the 11mm plunger and the compensator were salvageable, so I told him to just sort it out. I then frantically sold as much shit as I could in the next two weeks, which fortunately netted me almost exactly what I needed to pay for the rebuild. So here we sit tonight, with this resplendent bit of kit just waiting to be mounted by yours truly... I shall update y'all after the weekend.....

  2. and now this. massive thanks to the people who made this happen, @JustHarry for hooking me up with the joker who had it. Owen Flawes for agreeing to sell me his spare rear screen @nzstato for collecting it, packaging it up and sending it up to me, what a good cunt. but not @sheepers for breaking the first one like a fucking dick. 2021-03-08_05-49-15 by sheepers, on Flickr

  3. Hi Steve! Markku here, welcome to oldschool . I see you've figured out how to upload pics to the forum. I'll work out a good way for us to share photos and videos soon. Also welcome to @Whoopeecock and @Tyla - was great riding with you two over the weekend. I was on the red MX100 (sorry for splashing you on Mt Patriarch Jeff ). This is basically it. I got a couple of pics and vids from the top, but was too busy holding on / nanging first gear to stop for photos. Here's my small selection of videos from the weekend. Happy to share them if anyone wants to add them to an edit.

  6. Huge thanks to all the top blokes who organised this ride and support crew with the awesome daily lunches from the off-road food trailer. Great to meet an awesome group of riders. Also thanks to fellow Monkey man Jeff for sharing the details of this event with me. I thoroughly enjoyed the amazing three day route, riding to places I never thought I’d ride the Monkey bike, and over the most varied terrain. Whilst the Monkey did very well and was a comfortable ride, I was riding it as hard as I could and at times it was a mission to keep up with the rest of you. The 12-inch wheels and unforgiving stock suspension proved challenging in the potholed sections and gave limited control on some of the looser gravel – great fun though and I can’t wait to do this again next time! My clutch got a good workout particularly going up the Maungatapu track and trying to keep the front wheel down. Cheers again Sean

  7. Hey fullas. Monkey Jeff here, not long time listener, first time caller. Just thought I should join up, chime in and say a massive thanks to you all. That was my first time riding in a group like that, first multi day ride, and first ride on a small bike of any distance. It was just fucking brilliant! I haven't figured out who is who yet, but more big ups to the arrangers and handlers; Bart, Karl, Will and the boys in the 4WDs and on the barbie. I may go to the supermarket just to get DoBros and sossies and remember good times. The Monkey was comfy to ride, bit of a sore back from being hunched over but all good now. What surprised me was the speed that some of the bikes had. While no Monkey likes a fat man on it's back, it needs better gearing and suspension before the next Melee. Even lighter Sean said his suspension was bad. I did love it on the Mangatapu though. The riding over the three days was too good to describe, every day so different. Highlight was Mt Patriarch and Day 2 in general, as I hadn't been up there before. But watching everyone smash out all the roads was so cool. Some bikes I just didn't expect to make it, and they just blew it out of the water. I'll figure out how to load yup the photos, I think Steve was going to put something together so if you want to let mew know the best way to share that and the riding app info we talked about, let me know. Other than that, just thanks again!

  8. There has been a bit of progress on this, but not a whole lot tbh. The blasting mentioned in the last post as the guy from work who was going to do it took about 6 months off on ACC. He's back now though so I might go have a chat with him today and see what's doable for him. I have purchased some bits, but mostly all my time and money have been tied up in buying and now renovating my first home! The major plus side of which is I now have my own shed, and this got moved from my parents place to there about a month or so back. PFT that reminded me to do this, from 2012 when it was still on the road, transporting my mates trebuchet haha

  13. After delivering the filter elements just before Christmas, discovered the base plates were missing, and had to order those too. So another months delay, but what the heck, it's been a while already. Delivered the base plates, and the engine guys were finally able to run the engine safely, without worrying it would suck in a lose bolt or some such. Due to the time it had been there, they had been having to move it around a bit, which wasn't doing the engine any favours, so was recommended to run it under load on the dyno to bed in the rings. Getting it to run properly turned into a bit of a drama, when carbs were set correctly at idle it ran very rich higher up the rev range. The temporary solution was to wind the jets down to lean out the mixture. The permanent solution will be new jets and needles. Might get some leaner BBR needles from the Maxi HL, to compare to the Marina's BAD. Finally got it home today. Nice to hear it running, and to reverse it off the tow truck and drive it into the garage. Clutch working well, no trouble engaging first or reverse. A couple of things will need attention, lots of travel in the brake pedal, despite the calipers being overhauled, no doubt the rear cylinders will need looking at. Rev counter not working, supposed to be ok with the Powerspark distributor, will need to check the wiring. Pulled out the back seat, which is a brown cloth one from a later car, since I want to keep the original vinyl seats for authenticity, and the matching cloth front seats have completely different mounts anyway. Underneath I found two of the quarterlight rubber hinge blocks that I'd spent a year scouting the world for, and had finally found in a paddock near Invercargill. Wonder where the other two ended up. Anyhow, here are a couple of videos of the engine running. OCD will require turning the filter mesh and clips to line up properly.

  20. The Maungatapu Saddle. Some relief after some intense riding on the way up. It was at this point here that Mark & Aaron who had taken the sealed road over the Whangamoas from Pelorus to Nelson checked into our room. They said it was the smoothest sealed road they had ridden

  23. Not much has happened since Kumeu.. took the Mrs down to Christchurch the following weekend to have some time out, and wouldn’t ya know it, that was the same weekend as MCM.. honestly totally unaware I was when planning the trip but managed to convince the Mrs that we should go check it out... first time there for me and it was pretty cool.. well worth the visit and would definitely go again (with the Galaxie preferably). Galaxie pics for Galaxie thread: So I finally decided to drop my car round to my mechanic the other week as I was struggling to find the time to get those things done for the WOF before the 28 days ran out (still didn’t make it on time dammit).. did a rockauto order last month and got in new bearings, tie rod ends and 3 different sets of axle seals as I wasn’t sure which one fit (and they were so cheap). In the end all the tie rod needed was to be re-greased thru the grease nipple as it had water in it which was creating the play, replaced the leaking axle seal, and the reason for the play in the front bearing was because the bearing race was a fraction smaller than the housing so it was moving a little bit.. got a fitter turner guy to tack weld it in neatly and she was all good!.. I’ve been slowly accumulating the bits needed for a full front end rebuild as she’s a bit floaty, so that will or will not happen over winter, but in the meantime I’m just enjoying old car ownership and taking her on the odd trip into work. Mexican blanket pic for thread..

  25. I got everything together on Saturday, then had to charge the battery, so I got it started on Sunday. It was idling nicely, had a couple of fairly loose tappets: Tightened those up and then attempted to take it for a drive. It was missing really badly under load, really badly. I started losing my shit about putting the timing chain back wrong, then remembered that it was also missing really badly before I took it apart. I'd just assumed that it was a symptom of the BHG. So after checking the plugs etc I decided that the coil must be bad. I borrowed the coil off the ute I just sold and went for a drive, much better. So I've ordered a new coil, hopefully picking it up today. I also had a yarn with the guy who bought the other one. I was bang on diagnosing the issue it had. The vacuum advance diaphragm on the side of the dizzy was toast (like I told him). He swapped a new diaphragm on and it drove perfectly. Double edge sword there, happy I was right, sad that I got half of the value of the car. Oh well.

  26. Decided to throw in the drivers door sill as it was worn and rusty, got my paint, dressed the van up for primer tomorrow hopefully... if I dont get tempted to do more bits.... I should just leave it alone .... but I can't... I'll probably do a couple more panels. After these though, and after putting the engine back together with the improved parts.

  27. This was my first mission based OS event. What a super crew, @Mof, @JustHarry and @- i5oogt - were an insanely patient support team. (I really hope your diff noise is nothing serious @Mof). It would have been easy to have a niggle at me for riding a cheats bike, but there wasn't even a hint of it. I loved chasing the FR50/CT110/MX100 up hill (the downhill not so much!). I'm looking forward to having an excuse to build something for future events too. What a bunch of GCs, options for the next top of the south invasion are already being plotted out in my head.

  28. still cant find any door rubbers. anywho today i made a parcel shelf. it goes without saying the old one was fucked but not as fucked as it should have been given that its 50 years old. as is the norm for this car with the old parcel shelf removed the steel was in perfect condition. i made a new shelf out of 18mm MDF because thats what i had. made it in two pieces because its close to impossible to get it in or out if its one piece. couple of bolts to hold it down and we're in business. tomorrow ill glue the carpet on and shes finished. 2021-03-06_04-00-50 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-03-06_04-00-44 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-03-06_04-00-37 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-03-06_04-00-29 by sheepers, on Flickr

  35. A bike like @Truenotch/ @WankBankA100/ a CT would be the ideal small bike imho. The NBC defo went hard for what it was too. Hats off to @Chunky_t for being the only leading link bike to finish. Depending on how high that river is, smaller bikes might need to go across on a trailer. I'm not sure I would have made it across if it had been another 30mm deeper.

  38. Done. I suppose I should do some kind of leak test since there are eleventy billion welds on this thing. I also learnt that if you use the cordless drill on the nut for the v-band clamps, and there is no lube, and they are stainless, the thread eventually galls and welds itself on. Fortunately, my original design was going to use more clamps, so I had a spare. But still, they aren't cheap. I put a drop of oil on the threads now.

  39. Long time since the last update. Engine was sent off to West Auckland Engine Reconditioners for a freshen up. Turns out it had been bored out .040", and just needed a hone plus new rings and bearings. Cam had been reground at some point, but was a bit worn, so was sent off for some attention. Required new cam adjusting shims to be made, as the correct ones couldn't be found in the required thicknesses to suit the reprofiled cam. Also required repairs to the backing plate, as this closes off the rear coolant gallery and had corroded badly. Had to be welded up and ground smooth. Mysteriously, the dipstick and tube were missing. Fortunately an acquaintance in Invercargill with a restored TC Coupe, had found a rotten TC in a paddock and was able to supply the missing parts. Gordon was also able to salvage the hinge blocks for the rear quarterlight windows, which are no longer available new. Also missing from the engine was the original distributor, so I opted not to get the original Lucas 29D recurved, and ordered an electronic 43D from Powerspark in the UK.
