  6. Had a chance to check up on the progress of my new motor today while on the way past Tumuka. Not much to report really but the bottom end has been assembled so that's a start. Everything looks pretty good, all nice and shiny and turns pretty easy. Alex says he will try and make a start on the head next week which will involve the new valves and a bit of cleaning up. in other breaking news I've found myself utterly confused with options regarding the megasquirt computer and it's plethora of options but think I've settled on what I need. Just a small bit more brain work to figure out what I need to make the Bosch coil pack do what I need and I'll get that on the way too.

  7. There's really no need to remove a cat anyway, they're no more restrictive than a muffler. The engine is tuned to utilise the cat for emissions purposes, which does sacrifice some performance and economy, but since ditching the cat has no affect on the engines tune there's not really anything to gain. Unless it's blocked, but that's highlighting another issue with your engine.

  9. Got a few things sorted. Gear lever lock-out was all spiffed to fuck so you could hit reverse instead of second, not much fun on the way down the gears. Adjusted with hammer/drift. Fine now. It's been a bit crashy over holes in the road, I thought it was just a Beetle thing.Turns out the rear body mount bolts were loose. One needed a bit of a nip, the other had backed off about 1/2 an inch. These 2 things sorted have made the car totally different to drive. Also tried the rims on for size, they're 8" and they are going to look mint. Going to have to do 2 & 1/2 inch flares which is fine. Anyway, pics. Loose bolts/chrome shocks aye Phone shot Nice.....

  12. For a few years I've been pondering how to use the very available and cheap filing cabinets as tool chests. Obviously they are too deep to be a good use of space. Possibly the best way to do it would be to get several identical ones and mod the drawers so you have one cabinet with many drawers With this in mind I went and got two not matching ones and set about cutting up a tool chest I already have because it was more work. Paid $2 for this Because I want to replace these useless steel on steel trays So pull a drawer out and strip it down If I had 2 matching cabinets I would have just had offset drawers down one side and some small shelves on the right. I didn't so I decided to do extra work and shorten, narrow, and chop top all the drawers to have 2 equal columns Everything will be riveted except for one long side which is stitch welded back on the base. Double up the steel on the front panel for strength and so I don't have to replicate the bends at the top. (I really should have made a bender first I guess) Perhaps the welds will improve by the last one Again, as the drawers were different I have done extra work so they will like the same. I won't use the original handles, will set the drawers back far enough to clear some handles, which I will make to match the britool top box With them fitting something like this I cut the old centre rails out but the side ones are in there really well. So will have to get some more cutting and grinding disk's. The file rails cut short enough all right and will just need to rethink some stops I plan on 4 equal size drawers on top and then Il rethink the bottom area when I get to it. Either a couple of big deep drawers or just a space to jam some plastic tool boxes

  17. At work I've been replacing old parking signs which have been superceded by a new design. By the time I'm done I'll have 200-300 of them. They're all going to scrap. Since some people like old signs on their shed wall as decoration, I thought I'd offer them here. free, but you have to come get it. I can probably bring some to Hanmer for out of townerds. But if you're local you can come get your own. Condition ranges from mint to haggard as fuck.

  18. It's a common issue with carby bikes @Nick Ritchie. My rebel won't idle unless its Been running for a good 10 min and it's lack of a functional choke doesn't help. You have to remember you have a 250 trying to warm up a decent chunk of alloy and steel plus a few litres of oil. It seems odd that full choke kills it. Does the choke not operate a fast idle as well?

  20. I wanted to remove some of the sound deadening bitumen pads from the floor because it was in the way of welding, it looks really horrible and I was looking for any more rust. So I bought 5kg of dry ice today and removed ALL of the sound deadening after work. Was 3kg of the stuff. I think It took about 3 hours. Didn't find more rust. There is a mystery tear in the floor, like it was lowered onto something sharp... I'll clean the remains up with solvent and wirebrushes and paint it with POR15. There is a really ugly repair to the floor where the handbrake mounts. I want to cut that out and do a tidier job of it.

  29. we gonna rock down to electric avenue...please please work!spent several hours of my life making these air cleaner spacers.now looking not quite as homemade, still need holes for studs on top of the crabs.played mix and match with the fuel inlets on my old single dell, twins now both the same fittings with one side blocked off, so the line will come up though the firewall, to the left carb then over the the right hand side.got the linkage working nice and fitted the sparkplug wires.test fitting the old k&N off the single, new ones will be the taller ones I think.so close!

  32. Drilled out the spot welds to separate the two parts of the firewall panel. The smaller panel needed to come off for access the weld the bigger one on. Removed the remains of the old firewall. And removed the brake, clutch, pedal box and steering column. And scraped some shitty old seam sealer off. Removed the battery shelf to make more room. I think I will bare metal the engine bay cause all the paint is fucked, then seam seal all the joins cause most joins are not sealed and the stuff that is is horrible tar stuff. Found some more rust after removing the radiator.

  36. Last of the parts finally turned up today. Got some Nitrided valves with stellite tips(whatever the fuck that means), new iron guides, seals, and some inserts from a fellow in the UK. Im having second thoughts about the inserts as I hear they can cause more shit than they prevent. Plan will be to run on avgas because I like the smell of it but if I can't get it then pump gas. Anyone got real world advise? Anyway, I'll get these off to Temuka tomorrow and hopefully a new donk will emerge in short order.

  37. Hah turns out it was already a 70cc and the new piston makes it 84cc, not 100 cc as advertised I see why people mess around with scooters, had it stripped in 30 min. Found some grey paint that matched ok so painted the bits of frame that were modified The variator rollers were worn with big flat spots so hopefully the new ones make that work better .

  38. wee up date. i had a 10" fan on the radiator and it was fine but once i hooked the trailer on and fulled the fucker with wood i noticed that the temp was getting higher than it had before.. so i grabbed a 16" fan as it would fit perfectly in the factory shroud but NO!!!!! well it did fit perfectly but even with moving the radiator back in closer it still hit the water pump. so i had to put it on the other side. and fuck me it blows......gets up to temp ...fan kicks in and it turns off withing a few minutes.....(just idling) and then i started on the spot light. (karl pointed out tome one day that there are dimples in the panel for mounting holes) so after drilling them out i mounted the ..............um ....mounts now all wired up and working ......even changed to the mk4 grill

  40. Managed to snap me accelerator cable coming over the Saddle Road tonight right at the tip just after passing a couple of slow pokes so I looked like a right chode coasting and pulling over and up onto a curb Bonnet up assess options and a helpy fellah pulls up and promptly gets stuck in the bog in front of me Think about the choke or kickdown cable.... Went with robbing the choke connection and a Brazilian zip ties we're good! Quick call to Graham Etkins and he's got a couple in stock for around $20 each! Zip into palmy a bingo, not quite what I need (didn't check till I got home but the man is the dude for parts Need a short motorbike cable with lead bit at each end for the setup I've got so should be able to get home and sort it tomorrow

  41. Probably time for a little update on the Trumpy. So the new engine is currently being built up from an old PI motor that was lying around in a garage down south. Basic details are .40 thou over, forged pistons, Newman cam, lightened flywheel, balanced pistons/rods and rotating bits, 10:1 comp, extractors, and the EFI setup based on the old PI bodies. There is also a power steering rack and pump getting the treatment in town which will go in at the same time... Please enjoy some pictures

  42. Been a while since I've posted anything up on my Trumpy but have been having heaps of fun with it. The OD gearbox has made a world of difference to how it goes on the open road so that was definitely a worthwhile excercise. Since I got it back on the road last June it's done about 4500 miles with no real faults to speak of. Been mostly just around Nelson and Mot but have been up the lake half a dozen times and once down to Westport which was a blast... I am really stoked at how it handles now compared to before the big upgrade but have been pining for a bit more grunt. For a little while now I've been collecting bits for a new donk and am just about ready to pull the trigger and get it built. Plan is a 2.5 bored out a bit, up the compression, EFI, cam, headers etc... Ive got most of the stuff together for the EFI setup and have been modding a set of PI manifolds to suit. As soon as this is done I'll get the engine itself underway....
