  2. much fucking around waiting for parts and changing my mind on things has resulted in it still not going yet. however the motor is in the car for permanent (this time round) and the only major bit I'm missing at this point is the intake manifold. so, whats been done? modify and strengthen the gearbox crossmember mount to bring it up to current cert regs head has been hardness tested, cleaned and reassembled with new stem seals. valves re-seated and stage 2 BC cams fitted. powerhouse racing pulley kit ATI harmonic balancer titan adjustable cam gears gates blue cam belt NZ EFI ultra high output coils with built in igniters other things. the block came with no engine number so i thought id better put one on it so i can identify it if i need to for whatever reason. 2016-07-13_05-58-18 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-07-13_08-41-27 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-07-13_08-43-57 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-07-13_08-44-10 by sheepers, on Flickr

  3. Discussion Thread So I managed to steal a KP bugeye off of an old lady today. She owned it for 20 years and one week. Total KMs are unknown, odo currently says 60,000. She did 30,000 in the 20 years she had owned it. It is a KP60 so should have a 2K in it. I had prepared myself to endure the mega slow that is associated with this fact. When I arrived at the house to pick it up I took a quick look at the engine and the block was red - a bit surprising "aren't 3K blocks red?" briefly went through my mind. The engine was caked in grime so I didn't dig in and look. So anyway, I handed over the cash, gave the old lady a hug (she was pretty sad about losing her baby) and hit the road. After about two seconds I realized that something was up. The car was faster than my Sprint. I kept driving and made it home without any mishaps, gave it jandal a couple of times and enjoyed the speed. I was trying to come up with a logical argument along the lines of "it has small tyres and a 3.9 diff, the Sprint has huge tyres and a 3.5 diff so that will probably make up most of the difference", but I was also thinking "this feels nothing like any 2K I've driven". A reflexive smile formed on my face. I got home and the first thing I did was took a look at the engine block. "Hmmm, there is no lug where the engine number usually is! What about up front?" So I looked at the front of the block and saw nothing except a sort of flatish area of black grime. I rubbed away at it for a few minutes and first I saw some numbers and then I saw a K and then I saw a 3. "Ooooooohhh this explains the power." It would appear that the engine was changed in 1996 and the car was never certified - "Why would you even certify a shitty 3K??!" I hear you say - and somehow the car made it through 40 WoFs without ever getting pulled up for it. I doubt it will ever be pulled up for it so the engine shall stay. The car leaks oil almost as badly as if someone had drilled a hole in it. I'm going to replace as many seals as I can and try to stem the flow. The front guards are a little manky from the old lady driving into cars/walls/people over the years so I am going to repair them - they look to be rust free. The doors have a little bit of rust along their bottom edges, the passenger one looks pretty much fine so I will probably leave it. I'm going to get the rust removed from the drivers door. There is some rust around the hatch window, a very small amount albeit. I'll get this done at the same time as the door/s. The passengers side of the car has been rubbed a fair bit by her driveway shrub over the years so could do with a decent buffing. The seats could probably do with an upholstering. The brake booster and surrounding area need new paint due to some sort of brake leak in the past. It doesn't look like there are any rust holes, or even very much surface rust in the area though. Here's a lame image of the car: It's the same colour as the Sprint, which will make storing paint cans easy. The only issue is that it is a difficult colour to mix accurately. I'll take some good photos tomorrow when I start working on it. I think the very top of the list will be the diff pinion seal and the upper engine seals. And about 30 litres of degreaser. Future (distant) plans: -Restore to as good of a condition as I can -Maybe upgrade brakes and suspension -Cert if I upgrade brakes and suspension I'll most likely have to sell the car before I move back to Auckland so I would like to get it into as good of a condition as possible by November. It might grow on me and I could end up keeping it. TLDR: My girlfriend buggered off to brass band nationals for the week so I bought a car without telling her. She might kill me when she gets back, but at least I have a 3K.

  5. I happen to own a set of rollers so I rolled some shit; And I attached yet more laser cut things to some SHS to get this; Then after much measuring, tacking and dicking around I have this; It was surprisingly difficult to get all the angles and spaces just right. It is within a few mm now though. It looks a bit Boris without the sloping front and back, that will be rectified shortly. And thanks to GC Threeonthetree I have this item; I am almost certainly going to mod the existing wheel to take a quick release and this....

  9. Less than a week to go now. So since I've publicised the event on facebook I've received a fair bit of criticism. I don't mind as it's good to get the opinions of regular attendees. For those who don't remember, we publicised the event via facebook quite a while ago (last year, maybe the year before? I forget). Quite a few more people turned up and they were generally pretty good, adhered to the rules and made an effort to talk to others. However there was a very small minority of approximately three cars and about the same number of people who ended up causing a bit of trouble. With this in mind and the increasing numbers of potential members who know of us through facebook, I decided to mention the upcoming meet on our Oldschool.co.nz facebook page. I have deliberately chosen this month's meet to try this out on for a couple of reasons: - It's the middle of winter. So anybody who makes a conscious decision to attend will be battling the cold and possibly the elements. Essentially, it's easier to turn up to an event on a good day/night but much harder to do so when it's cold, dark and possibly raining. If anything the weather and season will be a deterrent for many, but if new members still show up despite this then it's an indication that they are probably genuinely keen to be a part of things. - Being a winter meet, we generally have a lower turnout for the Monthly Meets. As such, there will be more parking space for potential new members and extra cars. The same cannot be said for the summer months. Essentially I am expecting a few newbies to show up, having heard about the meet solely through facebook. Some of these people I know, some of them other members may know and the rest may be complete strangers. I have briefed a few members who will be attending to help me to both make the new members feel welcome and to help me re-iterate the rules and culture of our casual meets. Rest assured, this will not be a bunch of cunts turning up to spoil or in any way ruin the easy going nature of the meets. Rather it is an opportunity to extend a welcome to new members who may share our interests but not have a particular group that they can turn to for advice etc. All I ask is that if new members do show up, just make an effort to at least say hello to them. I'll be doing my best to hover around and talk to as many people as I can but some help would be greatly appreciated. And if you see anybody doing something that they shouldn't, please remind them of the rules. Again, I'll be doing this as well but it can't hurt to ask for help if and when required. So it's basically going to be a standard Monthly Meet but with a few potentially new faces and cars. As per usual I will be there and will have Oldschool stickers on me if anybody requires some, $5 each. Hope to see you all there.

  10. Fuel tank seal has been done. Basically spent a whole day doing another round of marine clean, then a good 2 hours of metal ready. Spent a fair amount of time drying it out with the heat gun. End result, meh it actually looks a bit thin at the bottom where all the rust was, and I can see an exposed rust flake towards the top of the tank, so who knows, maybe I didn't dry it enough.. Will run as is and see how we go. Pre-sealant: Post-sealant: And while this was happening... Stripped some more stuff, gave the bum end a good clean to repaint some surface rust. However as I was cleaning up the swingarm, I suddenly noticed what looks to be a big old dent in one side of it. Would this be wof fail?

  12. Hey Mateys, Just finished lowering the ol girl today. Took a couple of goes to get the front height right but I think it's pretty good, and it still rides pretty well! Fron't dropped about 3" and the same-ish on the rear. Also test fitted a 14x7 volk mesh and liked it. So I'll run them or my Hayashi mesh's.. Once I buy some tyres.. Also brought some sweet old roof racks. They're just getting sandblasted currently. Then I might just let me rust a bit then pop em on, should look fairly hilarious. Also been thinking about what to so with this rubbish old motor. Have been giving it tits everywhere lately and I'm pretty surprised it hasn't let go yet. Have been thinking pretty hard about a A15 and 5 speed, would need new mounts ect but once in and tidy could probably get away with no cert as they look very similar to J series. But could also stay with J series and maybe get a J15 and put some MGB twin SU's and headers and it could go ok.. Anyone have J series experience or input? Also my alternator is super poo. If anyway has a spare to get rid of please PM me!

  13. Ok, so It all started one sunday morning. Was told about a Subaru GSR on trademe that I'd missed. Reserve $1. Long story short. I won it, $46. Got it home and shes pretty dang tidy. Will endevour to get wof'd up asap and definately convoy with ute to next oldschools. Now its supposed to have ea63(s?) in it, which is 1400 dualcarb which is supposed to be good for 90 odd hp, and was a real speed machine according to various sources. Instead, its been repowered sometime in its life with an ea71, 1600 single carb, unsure but probably something like 60, maybe 70 horse's at best, engine is an unknown combo at the moment tho so no idea to be honest. Got it home, whipped battery on charge and set about getting it to run. Fired up real easy with a bit of gas down its throat and seems to purr real well considering PVC system is all over the place and vaccum advance goes nowhere/assorted other little things. Brake booster and possibly master cylinder appears shagged, so here starts the terrible mission of trying to source replacements or rebuilds. Any ideas anyone? Steering rack seems possibly a little suspect, but I'll leave that up to the WOF inspector. Plans? Get wof, get reliable, pull plows, Uh I mean hoes. pictures! Werd. 14. Hi just starting my build thread for our 1976 triumph 2.5tc after many months of looking for a car to buy this trump came up for sale in Nelson, with many messages we decided to make the trip from Dunedin and meet in Christchurch, After 1 hour of owning trumpy we pulled over in Ashburton to check all was ok and noticed we had oil leaking every where After 5 hours of waiting we managed to get trailered back to timaru, stayed the night and up early to fix it to get the old girl home, as we were taking the filter housing off we noticed the o rings had split, the previous owner left the old one when he did his last oil change. after a trip to repco new oil, filter kit and a few washes we had her holding oil again. it turns out the bolt holding the housing on was to long and this may be why there was two o rings to try and seal it. after a very long two days we finally made it home and trumpy got a much needed wash after getting use to the car we decided there was some things we wanted to tidy up started to paint the air filter assembly and give all the chrome a good polish. we also put new plugs and leads as it looked like the had been on there since new, as we topped up the wiper fluid we seen it was clogged and filled with algey.... who knows how long that has been sitting with trumpy all clean and running much better we took it for a drive. since owning it have noticed the starter motor has been occasionally sticking on and yesterday went to turn it on we had nothing only ignition lights .... after a few descent wacks with a hammer she started ( no hills where we live) so we are on the look out for a replacement and any advice on our one , we are also looking for a manual gear box overdrive would be preferred here is our link to the discussion thread //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/53434-matt-lauras-1976-triumph-25tc/#entry1729123 the next job on our list is sort the starter motor.

  22. You need to swap the whole thing, bearings are different sizes so hubs arent interchangable. Obviously need to do both sides as suspension geometry is different.

  23. This ones got the option of a chuck or face plate on either end. So just setup shaft off centre using the chucks. Only has to rotate slowly but may still need a counter weight to offset for vibration. I Have ground an offset shaft by fitting an adaptor over the ends with drilled centres before and in some ways i think that could be better because you can use a dead centre and shouldnt get any runout. Best ive seen was some barry when i was an apprentice turned up a 6cyl crank for a race car and left the steel on the ends till it was finish machined and ground and these had the centres drilled in either end

  28. Na, Stock l28 is 79mm ld28 is 83 and rb30 is 85mm which you can make fit with some machining as they have the same bore spacing, anything bigger then that and its gotta be custom made. Problem with the longer stroke is you run out of deck height to get a decent ratio. Also the bigger the throw on the crank the closer you get to side of the block. Just for a rough comparison heres a rb30(similar size to a l28) next to a barra 4.0l http://s249.photobucket.com/user/ja1lb8/media/20160625_101418.jpg.html And heres my grinder , havnt sat the grinding head back on it yet. Had to remove it get the weight down, think it comes in just over 4t And yes I know its a cylindrical grinder but its pretty easy to offset grind with these machines. http://s249.photobucket.com/user/ja1lb8/media/20160625_101418.jpg.html

  29. Iv been plodding away at this. Redrilled the disks to Holden hq/chev PCD (modern mills have sweet digital readouts that make this very easy) I laid everything out on the lounge floor and sat everything together. I made a cad drawing and printed it 1:1 scale, cut it out and test fit it, then tweaked and repeated 5-6 times. Iv done something slightly unusual and decided to trim the bottom of the steering arm mounting boss so that the plate can go under it (and will be clamped down by the arm too) because this gives me a far more professional looking shape than this: I have also added onto the bottom of my adaptor plate the steering lock stopper as this has been cut off the end of the steering arm too (they did this in the above photo also but didn't add the stopper) Then I transfered my best template to sheetmetal and made sure it still fit ok. Then had a single item laser cut to again check everything lines up as expected. It's pretty damn good! I do need to spin up 4x spacers (to go between caliper mounting cradle and my adaptor, at the moment it's got a stack of washers) get some pads and then hopefully can document everything and send it away for tech approval ( or something) Huge thanks to Clint for answering my questions!

  30. Im pretty slack at this updating business but ill try fill in the gaps from the last update. After the VIN it passed it WOF, as soon as dad could after that he lowered it. Gotta lower it a bit more in the front still. We made it to Hawkes Boes 2014 however had a few issues whilst out and about and ended up having to leave it at dads not even half way through the weekend. On the cruise out to Lake Tutira she over heated and started smoking. Had to drive her gently up the hill to dads, stopping a lot along the way, thank god dads house is on the way to Lake Tutira. With some investigation we found out that the smoke coming into the car was luckily just oil dripping out the breather straight onto the headers. We left it at that for the weekend and once dad had a spare few weeks they took the head off and got that planed and put on a new head gasket hoping this would help fix its issues. They also did other various things however i now cant remember what they were but I also ended up getting the radiator re-cored as it was all blocked up and creating the over heating issues. Hawkes Boes 2015 comes around so i tried again. Get her down to Lees no issues. Then as we get out to the old camp ground (still hadn't fixed the smoking issue) we thought we would give her a check over. Lucky we did this as it turns out she had chewed through all the oil, filled her up again thanks to Lauren and Bizzo. We made the call that she would be all good to continue to use just filling up the oil as we went as it was just overflowing out the breather. On the way to the Mohaka river cruise we ran into some issues. I was driving up the hill, slowly getting hotter however not enough to worry about it at this stage, when all of a sudden I couldn't accelerate up the hill, just lost all power to continue steadily up. Managed to coax her up the hill and have a look, at this stage we had used so much oil its not funny and she had over heated again. The call was made to let her cool down and turn around and take her home to dads, and continue on with the weekend in a reliable car (again). After Hawkes Boes 2015 we tested the compression which came at low in a couple of cylinders. We found out the oil issue was related to the crank case pressurizing and ejecting all its oil. Dad pulled the head off again and after inspection we made the call to rebuild the motor. Queens birthday just been we went up to dads to help take the motor out. Motor successfully removed, has now been acid dipped and is awaiting parts. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/39707-baby-ks-1957-ford-prefect/page-2

  31. Been busy organizing things and trying to keep progress happening with this on the side of preparing the rally car for tauranga rally and all the other hectic life tasks. I drew up the heights for the shocks so it sits at the current ride height. Want to allow plenty of adjustment as I'll run it higher for road events. I'll have to invest in some pretty tough underbody protection also I think! Haven't got a delivery date for the shocks yet but I'm getting pretty excited. Engine is back in the hole also. After the rally I'll put some money towards urethane-ing engine mounts so I can bolt it up properly and start making exhaust manifolds etc. This is currently my biggest issue now that I'm actually in a position where I need to confront the bonnet clearance issues. I know the rocker cover clears the bonnet so looks might be a bit deceiving. Going to go for a curved set of fibreglass trumpets from Glen I think. Either that or try 3D print some of these.. Pretty cool huh?

  32. Bright and early this morning, time to piss off the neighbors (one set of which truly deserves it). I went around and cleaned up where i was going to cut, easier to do it now with a flattish surface.. Some extra tasty swiss cheese. Then I got to cutting using a bit of 50x25 sitting on the gutter as a guide; Then I propped up one side and got the forklift hard up against the bus, and lifted it off.... At this point I cackled quite a lot. I can stand up in it now. The lip left below my cut held quite a bit of that cheesy goodness, so I cut it off where applicable - this got rid of 95% of the grot; Then I took most of the windows out as I reckoned it would be less chance of getting damaged. I had to drill out some screws, the last screw popped through, knocked the window which fell out onto the concrete Rather fortunately nothing broke, altho the frame is a bit bent, but whatevs, stoked. Then I bought it inside the workshop and rust converted everything I could see. I cannot help but wish that I was turning this into a sweet ute.... Also the edge of that bit of roof left had been repaired in the time honored fashion; 2014 was a good year for soggy newspaper and bog filling materials :) I thought I had better leave the rust converter to do it's thing so that's it for the day.

  33. I like the idea of that, but I don't want to stray too far from the Oldschool way of life which is to include pretty much anything so long as it's old or we like it. I don't want to limit an event to just a particular type of vehicle. However I'm sure that if Dean turns up in the Charger you guys (and Ben) could come up with some sort of cruise and post it up on here. I really think this is a good idea but I don't want to be the person to organise it. Plus I don't have an American car hahaha.

  34. I had many things laser cut and picked them up today; Shoulder mounts for the seatbelts, 8mm plate, should be enough. Being the geek I am (and having the 20k version of Solidworks with all the bells and whistles) I did some FEA to make sure they were ok, they are. I removed some windows so i could get a bit more weld on there, this was piss easy, about 6 screws each... There is a bit of surface scab in there, this will get rust killed before replacing the window. Bits like this I have expected to be way worse than they actually are. Then there is the 2x sets of these; That got made into these; Still the other one to do, but a bit of weldy weldy and I had this situation, which pleased me. Good.

  39. engine/gearbox removal. it begins. i thought it a good idea to do a compression test before i took the motor out. very consistent readings of between 160 and 170. well, on the front 5 cylinders there was, number 6 however decided that 70PSI was the most it could muster. so the motors fucked and will need a rebuild. tomorrow more motor disassembly . 2016-04-22_08-20-19 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-22_08-20-10 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-22_08-20-03 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-22_08-19-56 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-22_08-19-48 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-22_08-19-33 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-22_08-14-06 by sheepers, on Flickr

  41. so as i said in spam some cunts tried to steal this car. they didn't get very far, my neighbour stopped them in the street. but - they fucked the key barrel and somehow they managed to fuck the clutch/driveline to a point where there is no drive at all. wont know what they did until i pull it to bits which will probably be in the next week. Swan insurance have been fucking magical in working with me to fix whatever has been done. at this stage paying for whatever it is in the driveline thats fucked is a given but they also want me to pull the motor apart for a bit of an inspection to make sure they didn't ruin the motor in anyway (they had the thing pinned on the limiter for about 2 minutes which is why my neighbour got suspicious and went out to have a look) so im going to pull the sump off and a couple of caps and maybe the head too. so yea, i have to pull it all to bits but it could be way worse.

  45. So its been awhile but I went up to dads yesterday and took her for a drive. Hadn't been started since last time I was there (ages ago) but she ran well once we found a battery that had enough juice. Dad tried to take her for a VIN but the fuel pump shat itself on the way in, now she has a new fuel pump and handbrake cable. Dad said he will take her into town for a VIN and drive her to work to get some k's under her belt. Hopefully she doesnt break down on the way like last time and passes and is all legal for Hawke's Boes.
