  1. I have some cool friends. One of them is pretty good at taking photos. Thanks rotahoe for these photos. U da bes. Qcr dirtmasters has taken priority last couple of weeks, time to get back into this. Need to do a couple of things and then start it up. Not sure I said but the reason hardly any exterior trims are on is that it requires a respray.

  3. Link to discussion thread: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/52819-the-night-riders-1986-toyota-mr-2-aw11-discussion/ Alright so a bit of background for those who care to read: I bought this car recently from a car collector after seeing an internet advertisement for it. The collector was an older gentleman who had quite a few old American cars and some others such as a Merc, mini, and all three generations of the MR-2; apparently he was wanting to thin the herd down a little. So basically I gave this guy a call asking about the car and its history, He didn't have internet so we ended up having a few back and forth conversations before finally agreeing on a price. He was quite nice and funny to talk to so it wasn't like hard negotiations or anything, more just like talking about the car, which was nice =) To be honest I didn't really think that I'd get the car so I was kind of surprised when we finally agreed. What! I bought a car unseen in person over the phone from some guy 6 hours away! I had never done this before. Anyway the day came to pick it up, I was pretty nervous that it might be really rough in person or weather or not it would even make the trip back home (like I said it was a collectors car so not driven much). Because of this when I finally arrived home with a very clean AW11, I was so glad. I must have spent about an hour or so just walking around it looking at it from different angles while the sun set. ...Skip forward a month or so and the car suffered some pretty bad overheating, lol. Basically the engine is cooked (probably can be rebuilt). Despite this, I love this car way too much to even consider selling (I've been though quite a few cars btw). So there was no doubt in my mind about what needed to be done... it will be reborn. I'm going to be replacing the engine (will keep original engine for a future rebuild) and because everything will be out of the car I will also do a manual swap since there is no better time for it. I want to keep it original for the most part, but will likely have a few light modifications. As I said, I only had it for a month or two before this incident happened so the craving to drive it again is steadily building. Some pics of it before the incident:

  6. Havent done too much to the wagon. Was using it as my daily for a while whilst the Mirage was WOF-less. This car is no longer a suitable daily driver with the cams that are in it. Makes for horrid peak hour driving. Added a boost gauge to the dash. Was a bit surprised as I thought the wastegate had a 12psi spring. The gauge was bang on 10psi (probably +/- 2 psi accuracy) Wanted to fit a boost gauge as I had a drag meet and wanted to raise the boost to around 14psi Took the car to said drag meet. Track was slippery. Didnt set any ET records but did finally crack the ton. 102 MPH with a crap time. If I had traction I may have got a PB. Oh well. And I made the wagon unofficially official It now has no WOF and the little shop I used to go to have got their act together. Which is good for me because it forces me to get this certified. That is all

  7. Well I'm pretty fuckung useless! however I have some progress. (If you'd call it that). As per my last post This thing had done a head gasket. Turns out whoever the fuckwit was who assembled the engine (not me I just bought it as a complete engine) didn't fit the head locator dowel thing on the rIght hand side rear of the block this was the cause of all the boiling and coolant dumping into the sump. so yeah. Had to replace those. Also fitted an electronic choke Now it runs like a swiss watch. Now something has been slowly fucking me off about this car have a look! Not so noticeable in this photo but shit it obvious IRL. -its the ride height. namely the rear end I always thought the front was low for a supposed "standard" car. but the rear end takes the cake so now Ive been spending some money and I bought some of this shit. 2inch lowering springs for the rear a new electric ariel (someone has removed the motor from the old one(seriously! why the fuck have people being doing half arsed shit with this car) new outer weather strips front and rear to stop my doors filling up with water and a new bailey channel to eliminate the whislting sound while driving. and... chrome door strikers will hopefully be fitting it all on the weekend. Have more plans in the pipeline for this. please discuss--//oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/44998-wyldes-84-holden-statesman-deville-series-ii/

  9. Add to the Queen St 90s nights... recall a car full of keen young Indian Chaps trying to do a skid in their Sigma in the crawling Queen St traffic. Sparks coming out from under car and lots of smoking clutch then it launches forward into the back of an old Commo full of large Pacific Island Barry's... driver hops out walks up to Sigma drivers window and plucks keys from his ignition and biffs them up on the roof of the shelter over the footpath. Queen St Bystanders erupt in laughter. Commo with the Barry's takes off. Good times.

  11. I finally assembled my Capri/ RS struts tonight after having the bearing and seal kits installed by a local mechanic. These are the same set up as the struts I had in my MK1. HSD 51mm 5kg coilover kit, Koni 86-1835SPORT inserts and some Noltec adjustable tops this time around which should get the front a little lower. I put one king leaf spring in the back to see how it looks with my JBW minilites. No point in doing both sides as the diff is coming out soon to swap for R31. Not too bad but needs some 1.5" blocks to get it looking just right ;D

  12. Today I made good use of nothing to do and pulled the gearbox off to see what disaster awaited me. What I came upon wasn't pleasant. Those with weak stomachs dare not read on. This is what fell out as I separated the gearbox from the block: The remains in the bellhousing: Then I went back under the car to have a look at the pressure plate and remove that behemoth of an assembly. This is what awaited: I was not expecting that, and can't say I've seen that before. It must have been one hell of a party in there (which I funded by the way). The total sum of the destruction: Luckily no damage was done to any other parts so I can just put on the new flywheel and clutch kit and hopefully carry on with skids. I don't like to end on a down note, so here is a stance picture: Phwoar.

  13. Here's some details on my MK2 Escort Denim pack project. I bought it pretty rough and had some minor rust cut out and repaired. I was undecided about going turbo with it but I'm going to bite the bullet. The car will remain the same on the outside but by the time I'm finished, will hopefully be packing close to 300atw on pump fuel & octane booster. The main parts aquired so far: Pinto engine Custom stainless turbo manifold Garret ball bearing GT2560R Sierra EFI inlet manifold YB Cosworth Pistons & rods Reinz standard YB head gasket YB distributor & phase sensor Holden LS1 coil packs with relocation bracket R31 Skyline diff, handbrake assembly, tailshaft end W58 Supra box FG XR6 turbo intercooler Discussion thread here //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/51642-rhubarb77s-1980-escort-denim-pack/

  14. Understood. There'll be no removing this stuff if it falls to bits as there's no crawl space. The drooping reflective foil is only 100mm or so above the ground. The roll was $65 and it seemed a better idea than fitting nothing.

  15. So, I finally managed to get over a mild stone, floors are now floors again after fucking around trying to arrange a time when I could borrow a welder (thanks TGB for the offer!) now I just have the super un fun job of grinding it all back, welder was a cunt in spots, went super bird shit in one area. never figured out why. Oh well. Atleast its done looking forward to getting the drive shaft loops in and finally get the carpet and seat into this thing. And because this thread doesn't have enough pictures,

  16. Yeah the issue is mounting it not in the middle, it has to be centralized for a cert. You could move it up down or forward or back if the geometry was still OK. It's probably less of a hassle to just remount the engine though, as moving it opens a whole new can of worms if you need to correct toe change problems or get longer steering shafts made or something

  17. Picture less update (lame I know) P/S pump is done and mounted lines all plumbed and system is bled, exhaust is joined but is actually too quiet. Just need to modify the shifter, and refit the centre console, buy and fit heater hoses and a radiator fan then it's drive time!! 5/8ths of fuck all left!

  18. Strip it down and check for damage. As Fuel has said it shouldn't require a complete engine swap. Plus once it's apart you can go through it systematically, fix whatever requires fixing, learn a bunch of stuff along the way and have a sweet car that you fixed yourself. Edit: That is such a tidy example too. Looks beaut.

Daughters love my rust buckets (setting the bar nice and low for them) Depending where etc we could possibly bring a pony for entertainment for wee ones... would mean leaving old car at home but the horse box is a 1971... that counts right?

  28. It's not for saving money so much as for interests sake and learning something new. Or, learning about the theory of things, but then seeing how the theory holds up with some practical tests. It's also about being smug, that's my real main hobby. The best way to save money with this car would be to put it in a crusher haha. I'm done with the idea of driving old or high km cars as a daily though. My next car wont be something so Echo-ey but will aim for something around the 30 thou kms mark again. Not a single dollar or hour spent on problems for that car, in ~60,000kms driven so far. That's beaten any previous vehicle I've owned by several magnitudes haha. 2GRs are coming down in price...

  29. fuck this thing is lush as fuck to drive. i don't know what it is about it but its fucking cool fun to hoon around in it. anywho, Richard (new owner) came over today and gave me a hand and we got heaps done. radio install is now complete. made a mounting plate thingo, ran the wires and installed she 6" speakers in the rear shelf. it all works and sounds mint. the other thing that got done today is we removed some height from the rear by removing the rubber spring seats from the top and bottom of the rear springs. and because i had them we put some 20mm spacers on the back to stick the wheels out more. its rubbing a tiny bit because of the ballon spec sidewalls. 225's on an 8" rim gives a pretty 32 ford spec tyre bulge. if it was running the same tyre on a 9 it would be sweet. or a 205 on this rim with the spacer. whatever. anywho. pixxx 2016-05-07_05-23-03 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-05-07_05-24-01 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-05-07_05-18-48 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-05-07_05-23-10 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-05-07_05-19-37 by sheepers, on Flickr

  31. its surprising how little of a change in geometry can affect the toe change ( bump steer) i changed tie rod ends on a car of mine- about 9mm difference in the pivot point height it went from 23mm of toe change over its total travel, to 6mm with the new tie rod ends, and a noticeable improvement in handling

  34. I've been finishing off the last few jobs over the last couple of days. Most of the wiring is now tidied up. The electric fan is wired in and I got it working on the factory radiator switch. It's still not quite as tidy as I'd like but it will do for now. I also have a few small issues to sort. One being that the car doesn't really idle. It keeps dying if you let off the gas when coming to a stop and when I unplug the ICV, nothing changes. I think when it was in the e34, the throttle cable was just adjusted to not return the throttle fully, keeping it idling. I have also done this for now as a temporary solution until I figure out what's going on. I also have my suspicions that the TPS is not working. I get no readings on any of the pins at any point, so might swap it out for my one on the Eta which was new. My other issue is 2 days ago the car wouldn't start without being jump started by another car. I charged the battery and my jumper pack but it only worked for the first 2 starts and then didn't again, and my jumper pack can't jump it either. I have a feeling my ground for the battery isn't good enough, will investigate this tonight. It kind of renders the car useless if I need another to go along with me everywhere, hahaha.

  41. Round two + a few Every picture from my old thread has now become un hosted, so I may as-well start again, just like the car. I have been a little distracted from this car to say the least. I have been doing many house renovations, taken two trips to Europe & a few Honda Owner Group projects with not much escort time in between, I tend to completely loose myself in what ever project I have going on at the time and not be capable of doing more than one project, this could actually be a good thing. I guess its driven by wallet restrictions. So it's the escorts time again. CA18DET experts . . . Come on down! LETS DO THIS!!!

  44. I finally did something else on this thing. A little while after the initial engine transplant it started smoking on startup and being a cunt to start. I assumed it was just the glowplugs so I wasn't really too worried about it, other than people being all "WHAT A SMOKEY PIECE OF SHIT" after it stumbled to life when cold. Anyway, last week I messaged Cam about new glowsticks and he told me to fuck off, so I messaged Scott and he said genuine were $160 per stick. So I said "Fuck that." and figured that I would just throw the ones from the old engine in even if they're old and potentially also fucked, just to see if they were any better. We finally had some non-windy rainy weather so I did that this weekend in the luke warm sunshine. Pulled old glows out and they had different end shapes front (3) to rear (3). I had noticed in my investigations that there were different lengths available for the RD but these were all the same length, so anyway. They all looked like a metal stick with carbon staining. I then proceeded to pull the glows out of the old motor. They were all the same shape which was the same as 3 of the ones from the other motor. Side by side and some number reading later, it turns out that the ones from the newer (current) motor were 6.7V and the old ones were 12V. I guess I killed the 6.7V ones running the 12V Y30 setup through them. Anyway, older 12V sticks matched to cars 12V circuit. One glow, starts instantaneously with absolutely no smoke or hesistation. Problem solved. So didn't even think they'd be different voltages though. Cripes, such a noob. Something I'll add to the memory banks for any further diesel shenanigans.
